Portal Bound #0 Aspen Comics 2018 Written by Mark Roslan & Gabe Carrasco Illustrated by Alex Arizmendi Coloured by Wes Hartman Lettered by Zen     A parallel otherworld exists as a mirror to our own, where science is melded with nature and a warrior spirit defines their true value. A teenage soldier princess, Sybil, is sent off with her Uncle Horuk in an effort to stop her megalomaniac father, Emperor Atilus from destroying two Earths. With a deadly array of monstrous creatures in hot pursuit, Sybil and her uncle race to activate a portal to Earth to find a savior who is also figuring out how to survive…being a teenager!     I love Zero issues and that’s because it’s that perfect opportunity to introduce a new series and new characters. This is a chance for the creators to attract the readers attention and make them want to read what you’ve got. That this is an Aspen title that doesn’t focus on their usual characters is a huge bonus, that and it fits into their already established universe gives it that potential for something later.     I like the concept of the story here. Parallel Earths where we have not necessarily a doppelgänger but maybe an opposite like a mirror image it’s you but it’s not. Harder for me to explain and we’ll see how this plays out with Sybil and whom they believe to be her counterpart. Right off the bat I like the dual storytelling here, so two writers to main characters, two voices so yeah the guys work well with one another and each does a great job with their respective part of this story. The way the story is structured is extremely well done and the whole ebb & flow of how we read this is really rather good.     The characterisation here is excellent. Each character has a very specific and different personality and we can see where they fit into the story. Also the fact that this story lays out that Emperor Atilus seems to be possessed by some outside force which we don’t know what that is is great. It sets up Sybil’s mission to go find her counterpart and then come back and save her father from whatever it is that his him in its grip.     I like the interiors here they have the right mix of this all-ages and “normal” comic book art. The facial expressions are superbly done and give us that much more visual characterisation. Also the body language of the characters on both worlds really goes that extra mile in showing how their upbringings and how vastly different they are. The use of page layouts so that we see these angles and perspective in the panels shows off a great eye for storytelling. Plus the creativity and imagination on display is marvellous when it comes to the “other” reality.     So when it comes to introductory issues this one is probably one of the strongest and best I’ve seen. We get the basic plot, we are introduced to the main characters and even some of their supporting cast in ways that feel natural. This is a well thought out, executed and structured story where the pacing moves quickly but never feeling rushed. I feel like this is a unique book that has unlimited potential and I’m excited to see where this is going to go.      Breaking the mould and moving away from the Aspen that’s well known this is something you really should be taking a look at.
