Elliott lays his face flat against the cool metal of the counter, eyes already at half mast. His bravado and charm slide away like raindrops streaking across a window, leaving him hollow.

He’s so, so tired-- has been since his dinner break. Flying solo for the last leg of the night meant that he couldn’t exactly duck out early, and he’s really not the type of boss to call someone up and say “hey, actually, about that day off of yours, wouldn’t it be a shame if something happened to it.”

Besides! Normally it would be fine. He’s worked double shifts all his life, be it as a humble tech repair guy or running the bar solo. 

Normally, he wouldn’t be sitting on a stool, staring down the melting ice in an old fashioned. The bottle of bourbon is still at the ready beside it. Still open. Just in case. 

It’s not a common thing, okay. Elliott doesn’t have a problem with getting into his cups. Having a drink here and there has never been a problem to or for him--

The last stragglers have been gone a while, although he doesn’t bother to check the time to find out how long. The doors are firmly locked, and all that’s waiting for him is a trip up the stairs to his apartment above the lounge-- or, if he’s feeling less lazy, hailing a red-eye ship and heading back to the compound in preparation for tomorrow’s game. 

He does neither of these things. Instead, Elliott runs a calloused finger along the rim of his glass, and thinks.

Dinner had been fast-- Molly’s shift ended soon, so it was a grab and go kinda day. His favorite curry place was just down the street, a little joint with minimal outdoor seating right next to a stall, and that’s where he’d seen them.

An older woman-- her 70s, probably, not that he’d ever guess such a thing to a lady’s face-- shoulder to shoulder with two young men on either side of her. And they were laughing, the kind that rings out like a clear bell, cutting through the crowded sounds of Solace City during dinner rush. They shared a resemblance that was impossible to ignore. It showed in their kinked hair and their nose, the warm brown of their skin, gleaming beneath golden lights.

She was spinning a tale, he heard, shifting from one foot to the other as he waited in line. From the corner of his eyes, Elliott watched her gesticulate with her steady hands, and he knew her eyes would be bright if he were able to see them.

Clear. Warm. Full of recognition.

Normally he’d stick around and strike up a conversation with anyone who’d hear him with an easy smile and a stumbled hello. Regulars knew him, of course, and besides, who didn’t, once they got a look at him?

Elliott pulled out his phone, setting it on the counter beside the drink that he downs in a mouthful. Mom’s still his lockscreen, with her graying hair tied into a plait and her gaze up at a younger Elliott full of a mother’s love. He’d been barely 20, then. Before the war ended. and before--

He pulls the bourbon closer. Its glass is dewy with condensation.

“She got it early, you know,” Elliott says to the bottle, and his tone is as though he’s speaking to an old friend. Not conspiratorial, but confiding. His words are too loud in the silence. “The disease. I ever tell you that? The doc said it’s not supposed to, you know, really kick in till you’re older. We’re talking like, sixty five, seventy kind of older.”

He takes a pull, and it burns in a way he hates. In the moment, Elliott extends that hate to himself, pulling it inward like an iron maiden’s spikes closing in around him.

"But that’s how old she is now. Sixty five, about on the dot. In, you know. Three weeks or so. It was diffe-difful--hard. After the war. To, you know. Really... notice the signs. He laughs and it hurts. Steel wool in his throat. He coughs, clearing it. “Well. That’s not really how it went.” 

He can’t say the next part out loud, because it fills him with shame incalculable. He is dwarfed by the vastness of it, the darkness that swallows up all light it might see.

The awful truth he ricochets between have made peace with and never forgiving himself for:

His brothers would have known something was wrong. 

A loud crack of thunder outside jolts him back into his skin, heart thudding rabbit-fast in his chest. He rubs his hands over his face, soliloquy concluded with the most graceless of curtain calls.

He takes one last drink from the bottle and caps it, taking it by its neck to take with him back upstairs like he might a prospective lover, but then--

Elliott jerks, turning to stare at the door. 

He can’t remember if he actually locked it for the life of him. He was sure he had, but the memory of its actually is absent. Null. A void.

No one’s tried to get in... but maybe that’s just because it’s lights off, no one’s home. So where had he put the keys? 

Elliott checks his pockets. Not there. Checks his other pockets. Not there, but what is there is a familiar roll of nausea in his belly alongside the drink.

Where are they? Where are they.

The doors across the room stand in the silence and the dark, mocking him. If he checks them, it’s admitting defeat. If he checks them, it’s a confession. He steadies himself against the bar, closing his eyes tightly.

Think. Think. Not a big deal. Just a long, long day. A long day full of thinking about his mom. A long day full of wanting to go home to a home that no longer exists.

Elliott takes in one breath, then another, and turns on a heel. He is going to trust his memory. He is going to march upstairs. He is going to lay down��and moisturize and get some well deserved beauty sleep because his looks don’t come for free. 

He’ll find his keys in the morning, wherever they are in the bar. 

Things will be okay. 

“This is your fault,” he hisses to the bottle, shaking it a little as he puts one weary footstep after another. “If you hadn’t distracted me, I wouldn’t be in this mess. Shows me for trying to make a friend.”

Elliott does not think of his decoys, and what they might say. They may be twice as shallow but just as beautiful, but at the end of the day, they’re still him. Lena Luthor Fluff A-Z

it’s not the angst that I promised, but here we go.

A = affection (how affectionate are they in day to day life? Do they show affection publicly or keep that more in private?)

If you were to look up the phrase ‘touch starved lesbian’ in a dictionary, Lena’s picture would most certainly accompany the article. She doesn’t dare to show much affection in public for fear of making you end up on the first page of all of National City’s gossip magazines, but she can’t keep her hands off of you in private. She is constantly playing with your hair, intertwining your fingers or just mindlessly drawing patterns on your skin, as if you were her life line making sure she doesn’t drift away.

B = best memory (what is the best memory they have with you)

The first time you told her you loved her. She hadn’t dared to tell you first, her self-hatred was just that strong. Before you told her, there wasn’t a single day where she didn’t second guess herself, thinking you would eventually find someone else and realize that she didn’t deserve you. You, of course, took it upon yourself to destroy every last piece of doubt in Lena’s mind, again, and again, and again.

C = cat or dog person

I can totally picture Lena with a pair of fancy greyhounds.

D = dreams (what do they want to do in life?)

It’s clear as day that even though none of it is her fault, she carries a heartbreaking amount of guilt for the crimes her family has committed. She just wants to find a way to absolve herself of all the harm her family has done, and do something good with that cursed name of hers.

E = evenings (how do they spend their evening? So they go out? Do they read?)

Lena isn’t the best at taking care of herself, so it’s not an uncommon occurrence that she mercilessly overworks herself until she falls asleep at her desk. You have to frequently remind her to take it easy and treat herself to a nice meal, a good book, a relaxing bath and a full night’s sleep. She not-so-secretly loves spending evenings at your place, since her own apartment, expensive as it may be, never really felt like a home to her.

F = first date (what was it like?)

Poor Lena was totally overthinking every detail. She wanted to treat you to something nice, but she also didn’t want to come off as if she was flaunting her money. She took you out to a very fancy restaurant, where you sadly didn’t even manage to get past the appetizers before very disrespectful paparazzi tried to take candid pictures of Lena Luthor’s lesbian lover and you were forced to leave. Lena was apologizing profusely for supposedly ruining your first date, assuring you that she wouldn’t blame you if you never wanted to see her again...you had to cut her off with a kiss. After that, you decided to make it a lazy night full of takeout, mediocre movies and falling asleep on the couch.

G = giggle (what is their laugh like? What makes them laugh?)

Lillian Luthor made sure to chastise Lena for every laughter that wasn’t a pleasant, ladylike giggle hidden beneath the palm of her hand, which is why it is seldom to really hear her laugh unabashedly. But when she does, it’s the most beautiful sound you’ve ever heard, and also surprisingly deep.

H = hugs (do they like hug? What kind of hugs do the give?)

Touch starved as she may be, it takes Lena a while to acclimatise to being able to be as affectionate as she likes, but as soon as she does, her hugs turn from short and sweet to an almost desperate cling to you. She never wants to let you go.

I = instrument (do they play an instrument?)

Lillian made her take up lessons in playing the violin, the piano, and the harp. She despises all three of these things with a passion, even though she will admit that she would probably have enjoyed playing musical instruments if it hadn’t been her mother forcing her to perform flawlessly.

J = joy (what brings them joy in life?)

You. On days where she can’t find a reason to try anymore, when she just wants to drink herself into a stupor, she thinks of you. You are her strength and her reason to keep fighting.

K = kisses (what kind of kisser are they? Shy? Passionate?)

Nothing in heaven or Hogwarts is better than Lena’s kisses. Be it a quick, chaste goodby-kiss before she has to head off to L-Corp, passionate, almost needy kisses when you’re in private, or lazy, languid kisses in the morning.

L = love (how do they act when they have a crush)

It takes Lena a long time to even admit to herself that she has a crush. She flip-flops back and forth between smooth flirting and romantic gestures (you might just find your office filled with flowers), and guiltily finding more and more ridiculous excuses to see you. She may have perfected her facade of the unflappable business woman, but somehow you always find a way to get under her skin.

M = memory (what’s their favourite memory?)

None of her childhood memories are particularly pleasant, especially now in hindsight, as the only person she ever saw as a friend has turned out to be a murderous psychopath, so every good memory of hers involve you or her new friends in National City.

N = no (what is their pet peeve?)

She can’t stand surprises. She always has to plan ahead, and surprises always tend to screw up her perfect plan.

O = occupation (what’s their dream job?)

It’s always been Lena’s dream to become a scientist, to help make the world a better place with everything her mind has to offer, and she’s still working on that, but she can’t abandon L-Corp, not now, when she’s already changed it so much for the better.

P = parent (what kind of parent would they be?)

It would take some time for Lena to warm up to the idea of being a parent, not because she doesn’t like the idea of having children, but because she is terrified that she will end up like her mother. But as a mother, Lena would be wonderful, because instead of letting her mother’s influence corrupt her, she makes sure that her children can always feel safe and loved in their home. There will be no raised voices and no passive aggressive comments, no malice and no pressure on her children as long as she’s around.

Q = questions (do they believe in the super natural? Aliens? Anything along those lines)

Lena doesn’t believe in the supernatural, because if definite proof for it could be found, it would simply become natural, maybe in a way we would never understand, but natural nonetheless.

R = romantic (are they romantic during the relationship?)

Romantic is Lena’s second middle name, right after Lutessa. Flowers? Sent. Fancy chocolates? Ordered. Picnic on a private beach? Get in the car, her chauffeur will drive you there.

S = smile (what makes them smile without fail)

Your smile is so contagious, it never fails to make her smile. She loves seeing you happy.

T = together (how clingy are they? How long do you two spend together per day on average)

Her duties as a CEO are very taxing and take up a lot of her day, but after every hard day, she longs for nothing more than to come home to you, hold you in her arms and never let you go.

U = unbearable (what habit do they have that’s unbearable? What habit do you have that they find unbearable)

Her constant self-doubt is unbearable for you, as in you simply can’t bear seeing her putting herself down like that. And no matter how hard you try, there are days where nothing you say or do can cheer her up, and all you can do is assure her that you will never leave, in good times or in times like these.

Lena knows you mean well, but because she’s not used to someone caring so deeply about her, your efforts to help her out of her negative mindspace can seem smothering to her.

V = videos (do they take lots of videos or photos during your relationship?)

Lena doesn’t take many photos, because she has no doubt in mind that she can commit every second with you to memory anyways. She’d rather not ruin a quiet moment by forcing it onto a picture that will never be able to say as much as the real moment. Her phone lockscreen, however, is a silly picture of you kissing her on the cheek on a whim in the midst of a selfie.

W = wedding (what was the wedding like?)

It’s a spur of the moment thing. One minute you’re huddled together on the couch in a fancy hotel room, exchanging slightly tipsy and clumsy kisses, the next minute the words “marry me” have somehow slipped past your lips without authorization by your brain, and now that they’re in the open, you find that you don’t actually want to take them back.

Lena doesn’t take it seriously, at first. “Oh, you mean right now?”, she grins, her voice shaking with mirth.

“I mean it”, you reply, “marry me. Please.”

And her mouth drops open.

So yeah, it may have been a slightly drunk spur of the moment decision, but you don’t regret it one bit. That is, until Kara finds out that she wasn’t there when you two finally tied the knot, and it’s the first time you’ve ever seen her legitimately pissed off at you. You decide to renew your vows on your second anniversary, and you make sure Kara gets a front row seat this time.

X = eXtra (what’s an interesting fact about them that they don’t tell anyone about?)

Lena actually prefers the taste of beer to that of wine – her go-to poison of choice is of course scotch, but she really can’t stand the sour taste of wine.

Y = yuck (what do they hate? Could be a food, sent, word anything)

Cracking knuckles is the worst sound ever to her, to the point where she will give you the silent treatment if she catches you doing it.

Z = zzzz (how heavy of a sleeper are they? How do they sleep? What mood do they wake up in? Really any sleeping headcanons)

Lena Luthor is the littlest of spoons and you can fight me on that. She isn’t used to sharing her bed with someone, however, and on bad days you touch can be overwhelming, but when she’s in the mood for cuddling she loves to fall asleep with your arms wrapped around her.

Mic Check 1, 2. Happy 131 Day!

Since tumblr is no longer banned in Indonesia, I would like to make comeback post on tumblr, a quick one, because it will gonna be a long thread if I write it on twitter lol. And since today is my birthday, I just want to leave any trace to remember, haha.. But nope, I'm not going to write any wishes birthday here, bcs it will just to mainstream, haha, besides, I haven't made it yet!

Hmm just excuse my wrong grammar, I just wanna boost my confidence for writing in English again, bcs it has been aged since my last note in English. Or maybe in the future, if I have time, I'll try to fix it, ok.

So, here they are, my 31st of January in summary:

- Nu'est Minhyun, returns!

I might be not a hardcore fans of Nu'est, but I'm so happy for Nu'est and L.O.V.Es that Minhyun returns as Nu'est Minhyun, like, officially... I know how hard it felt when Nu'est members can't even talk about Minhyun in public back then, like Minhyun was Voldemort or something, and also L.O.V.Es has been dealing with Minhyun's akgaes since then, all these cases weren't easy to handle. I just wanna say congrats for both Nu'est and Loves, good luck and have a nice year ahead!

-I found my long lost twin!

2018 has been a meaningful year for me bcs I finally found my long lost twin, so starting this year I won't celebrate it alone, lol. I mean I think it's hard to find someone who was born on 31st January too, espesially kpop singer. So happy belated birthday to (G)IDLE's Miyeon too!

-Mashiho will debut, soon.

I think I already said on twitter that I'm rooting team J, and as final happened, there only two members of team J who made until the final stage, and I defintely want Haruto and Mashiho to debut. Haruto made it to the first group and now Mashiho made it to the second group. As we're still waiting for the full line up of second group announcement, I lowkey wishing that Keita and Yoshinori will make cut too, but hmm, sounds really selfish of me but YG TB line up announcement always filled with surprise, so we better wait and see.

- Mama didn't put any santan in the nasi uduk.

There are so many things to buy thesedays, so I decided not to buy any cake this year. Mama knows that I love nasi kuning and nasi uduk, so I think she decided to make nasi uduk for 4 people bcs it's easier to make than nasi kuning. I didn't help her to cook bcs I have to clean the upstairs. Around 11 am, I felt really hungry and since my job is done, I went to the kitchen immediately. The nasi uduk is ready, but when I started to eat, Mama said, OH I FORGET TO PUT SANTAN!

As I told you this story here, it might be not funny, but you know, the basic ingredients for nasi uduk is the rice and the santan, so basically, what I eat today just rice with "cikur" in it. Menboong!

- 131 BI's day.

Kim hanbin's username on soundcloud is 131 (from BI), fans started to celebrate BI's day on 31st of January, and it happened to be my birthday too! so, starting this year, 31st of January will be a special day for me and Hanbin! This is great!!!

And it's been a month since I came home, I mean, after graduated from college back then in September, I started to work in Jakarta, but seems faith want me to come home. So while working in Jakarta, I participated insome recruitments in my hometown. It was tiring, but it's all worthed bcs On 31st December, finally, I got the job!

There's still no official announcement when I have to start to work, so I think I still have plenty time to do all I want to do, and making more lockscreen is one of them bcs why not? Haha.. So bubye tumblr for now! And once again happy birthday to me!!

LG G8s ThinQ Review

Of all the big global brands in the smartphone space, LG is probably the most easily overlooked. The company doesn’t have a huge presence in the budget and mainstream segments these days, but still pushes out one premium V-series and G-series model every year. We’ve liked a lot of what we’ve seen, and these phones have impressed us with their cameras, displays, and overall performance. More importantly, LG seems to put a lot of thought into its products, with various little features and conveniences that stand out in an increasingly homogenous world.

The new LG G8s ThinQ has arrived in the Indian market quite a bit later than we would have expected for a 2019 flagship device, and so it doesn’t win any firsts in terms of specifications. Is this phone good enough to win over buyers who are looking at the current “value flagships” from OnePlus, Xiaomi, and others, or even more premium models from Samsung and Apple? We’re about to find out.

LG G8s ThinQ design

LG isn’t breaking any new ground with the design of the G8s ThinQ. In fact, it could almost be considered dated, with relatively chunky screen borders and an enormous wide notch. Most other manufacturers have already evolved to sleeker designs. One thing that jumps out immediately is the off-centre earpiece. This was probably necessary in order to accommodate a front camera as well as a Time-of-Flight 3D sensor and infrared illuminator, but it’s hardly an elegant solution.

This phone is available only in a Mirror Black finish in India, and LG wasn’t kidding when it chose the word ‘mirror’ to describe it. Both the front and back are made of glass, and both are incredibly shiny and reflective. The rear panel is effectively a mirror and it does look very slick and premium at first glance. However, it’s impossible to use this phone without smudging it, and fingerprints are picked up instantly.

Our review unit had a sticker on the rear with some regulatory information, and it left a residue that took ages to clean off. We were afraid of scratching the surface, but LG says there’s Gorilla Glass 6 on the rear and Gorilla Glass 5 on the front, which is reassuring. The frame of the G8s ThinQ is metal and also has a dark polished finish that blends in with the glass. It has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, and MIL-STD-810G compliance for resilience against shock.

There’s no doubt that this phone is built solidly. It feels very expensive and high-end, if not quite stylish. It’s relatively easy to handle at 7.99mm thick (with a barely-protruding rear camera strip) and 179g in weight. The glass is also not slippery at all, which was a huge relief to us. One-handed usage is possible, though not very comfortable.

The power button is placed right at the top of the right side and is completely out of reach. To make matters worse, it’s stiff and requires a bit of effort to press, especially through the included plastic cover. A tray below it can hold either two Nano-SIMs or one Nano-SIM and one microSD card, which is disappointing. The volume buttons on the left are also a bit too high, and there’s a dedicated Google Assistant button below them which is easy to press accidentally when trying to reduce the volume or take a screenshot.

Many people will be happy to see that the LG G8s ThinQ does have a 3.5mm analogue audio socket, making it a rarity in the premium smartphone space. This is on the bottom, next to the USB Type-C port and speaker. The three cameras on the rear are arranged in a horizontal strip, and there’s a fingerprint sensor below them. While a capacitive fingerprint sensor is another slightly dated feature on this phone, it is actually very convenient to reach.

Overall, the LG G8s ThinQ won’t turn many heads and doesn’t feel as fresh as many of today’s phones, so you might see it as underwhelming in terms of features compared to other current-day models. When you do get your hands on it though, it feels absolutely solid and built to a very high standard of quality.

LG G8s ThinQ specifications and software

The LG G8s ThinQ should not to be confused with the LG G8 ThinQ or the LG G8x ThinQ, which are all fairly similar in terms of specifications. Just like its exterior, this model has slightly dated components. We start with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, which has recently been superseded by the slightly faster Snapdragon 855+. While not outdated by any stretch, you can currently do better in the sub-Rs. 40,000 space.

LG offers only one configuration of this phone in India, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It’s officially priced at Rs. 36,990, though it sells for slightly less online. You get a 6.2-inch full-HD+ G-OLED screen (1080×2248) with an always-on mode but no HDR. The battery capacity is 3550mAh, and Quick Charge 3.0 as well as wireless charging are supported.

Unfortunately there’s a hybrid dual-SIM tray which forces you to choose between a second Nano-SIM and a microSD card. The stereo speakers are tuned by Meridian, and DTS:X 3D enhancement is available. Other standards worth noting are Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC, wireless charging, and three location services.

LG ships this phone with Android 9 and we were surprised to see the July 2019 security patch on our unit with no available update. To say that this UI is customised would be a massive understatement. LG has put its own stamp on pretty much everything, to the extent that it doesn’t feel much like Android at all (which was probably the intention).

Starting with the lockscreen and homescreens, we have elaborate animated wallpapers that honestly got annoying after a while. There are loads of LG’s own apps as well as several from Google, all on the homescreens. We noticed that long app and folder names were awkwardly compressed, which just looks messy. You can choose between this single-layer UI, an app drawer, and a simple EasyHome layout with oversized icons and text. The Settings app is totally redesigned with four tabs, which makes finding even simple settings a bit of a process. The default keyboard is loaded with avatars, stickers, and more.

If you dig around, there are tonnes of UI and behaviour customisation options. You can even choose the colour of the navigation bar and apply effects to the area around the notch if it is masked. Looking through LG’s apps and the Settings app, we found several features including sound effect controls, fonts, gestures, app cloning, a floating shortcut bar, screen recording, and context-aware routines.

One of this phone’s highlight features is its Air Gestures, which use the front camera and sensors to detect waves and pinches in the air. You’re supposed to be able to launch apps from the homescreen, capture screenshots, control music playback, and dismiss calls or alarms. In the real world we found this frustratingly difficult to trigger. It worked only about once in twenty attempts despite plenty of time spent training with the built-in tutorial.

Similarly, Hand ID claims to let you simply show your palm to the front camera in order to unlock the phone. You’re warned during setup that it isn’t very secure, and we found it almost impossible to line up our palm just right. Face recognition on the G8s ThinQ was also a bit slow, but LG claims better security with its ToF sensor than most Android phones deliver with just a camera.

The last feature worth mentioning is LG’s always-on display which is genuinely useful. You can have multiple colours and select whether you want music controls, a calendar, or even a picture to be displayed. Overall, LG’s software is overstuffed and fatiguing. It reminds us of mobile phones from a decade ago when companies tried to differentiate themselves with gimmicks and distractions.

The heavy UI animations on this phone seem to make simple things like unlocking it feel slow, but it’s actually quite snappy under all of that. The SoC is powerful enough to handle any current app or game, and there’s loads of RAM. We found that apps stayed ready to spring into action, and everything that you’d expect in a premium Android smartphone worked as it should.

Thankfully there’s no advertising spam, but we could have lived without constant notifications about LG’s apps being updated. There were also multiple messages warning us not to remove the phone’s battery while it’s running – which is impossible anyway.

We quite liked the display on the G8s ThinQ, aside from the notch, that is. It’s very crisp and vibrant, and we didn’t really miss HDR-level brightness. Games and videos were both pleasant. You get stereo sound through the speaker at the bottom in conjunction with the earpiece, and it’s relatively loud and clean-sounding.

Speaking of the earpiece, the off-centre location took a little getting used to but didn’t really make a difference to us in day-to-day life since it’s loud enough no matter how you hold this phone. LG also includes a headset with a nice braided cable and eartips in three sizes, which sounded okay but lacked bass.

Benchmark performance was good, but not the best we’ve seen from phones at this price. AnTuTu gave us 415,110 points while Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core test scores were 738 and 2,592 respectively. As for graphics, we got 57fps in GFXBench’s Manhattan 3.1 scene and 39fps in the Car Chase scene.

Of course we also spent some time playing PUBG Mobile, which ran at its high quality preset, and Asphalt 9: Legends. Both games were smooth and enjoyable. We didn’t find the G8s ThinQ getting too warm for comfort while gaming. This is very good performance but you can do better with the OnePlus 7T (Review) or gaming phones such as the Asus ROG Phone 2 (Review) at around the same price.

Battery life is also good but not great. Our HD video loop test ran for 11 hours, 51 minutes which is disappointing. Real-world usage was more favourable, and we easily got through a full day with about 20 percent left at night. During the day we played games for a while, took a lot of photo samples, streamed about an hour of video, and used the Internet constantly. Charging is also not especially quick – we got up to 15 percent in 12 minutes, and 69 percent in an hour.

LG G8s ThinQ cameras

LG’s previous G-series and V-series phones have done well in the camera department and we were not let down by the G8s ThinQ. Camera performance is excellent overall even though the specifications might not seem impressive. This phone has a 12-megapixel f/1.8 primary rear camera with a 13-megapixel f/2.4 wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel f/2.6 telephoto camera at the back. The primary camera supports optical image stabilisation as well as dual-pixel PDAF and HDR10 video recording. The front camera has an 8-megapixel resolution and f/1.9 aperture, and portraits benefit from the Time-of-Flight 3D sensor. Curiously, LG doesn’t specify the optical zoom range of its telephoto camera.

Of course LG has gone and absolutely stuffed its camera app with features and quirks, and not all of them are great for usability. To start off with, there are no fewer than 18 camera modes for stills and videos, plus more that can be downloaded. There’s no separate video mode; you can take a still or start recording with a single tap directly from the viewfinder. You can even choose which modes appear in the carousel above the shutter button. This is useful because it takes at least three taps to get to the spillover menu.

Some of these modes are extremely gimmicky, such as Flash Jump Cut which creates animations, and Cine Video which gives you adjustable filters and a targeted slow-zoom effect. AI Cam is a separate mode that suggests filters or adjustments based on what it detects the camera is pointed at. The Pro mode offers RAW file capture and presets for scenarios such as street photography or nightfall. Triple-Shot takes photos with all three cameras in sequence as a set that you can see side-by-side in the Gallery app. Speaking of the Gallery, it offers a huge variety of photo and video editing tools.

Switching between the three cameras is annoying since you have to tap one single button that cycles between them in a fixed order, and the icons for the standard and telephoto cameras are too similar. However a long-press brings up three frames with live previews of whatever you’re pointing at, as seen through each of the three cameras. This is truly useful and unique – but for all that LG shouts out its other features, this might go completely undiscovered. It also isn’t available while shooting video – you can only cycle through the three cameras, one at a time.

With all of that going on it would be easy to forget about the basics, but photo quality is really very good. The LG G8s was great at reproducing fine detail and vibrant colour, exposures were spot-on, and even complex scenes were captured well. Focus was just a little off sometimes, but you’d only notice that on very close examination. The wide-angle camera wasn’t as good at capturing details, and some shots looked a bit artificial. The zoom camera seemed to be more practical and useful.

Portrait mode doesn’t work on non-human subjects, but we’d only see an error message on screen after taking a shot. When it did work, edge detection was pretty much perfect and we were able to adjust blur intensity after taking shots. Even without portrait mode, close-up shots of flowers and objects had nice-looking natural depth.

At night, the LG G8s uses digital zoom through its primary camera rather than the actual telephoto camera, and there’s no indication of this to the user. The phone also seems to take a while to capture shots, which turn out very bright but potentially blurry. It’s a little surprising that so much processing is going on in the background, especially since there’s a separate night mode, and it can be hard to capture spontaneous shots. Quality is still very good. We were particularly impressed by how this phone rendered frames with points of light against dark backgrounds.

Video recorded using the primary camera is stabilised at 1080p as well as at 4K, but the usual rough jerks when walking were replaced by smaller little twitches. There’s a separate called Steady Cam which is recommended for shooting while walking. The quality of video overall is very good both in the daytime and at night.

You get plenty of modes to play with when using the front camera as well, but there’s no way to tell which ones will work, and the ones that don’t will just switch you to the rear camera without any warning. You can “green screen” yourself onto any backdrop, but we found the effect extremely cheesy and crude at best. All that aside, portrait as well as standard selfies were quite good.

The LG G8s ThinQ’s cameras offer quality as well as versatility

Verdict

LG’s entire approach with the G8s ThinQ is woefully out of date. It isn’t a bad phone for its price, but there are far more polished options out there, including the OnePlus 7T and the lower-priced Asus 6Z (Review) or Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro (Review). The looks and hardware of the G8s ThinQ are somewhat out of date, and you don’t get things like very quick charging, an HDR or high-refresh-rate display, in-display fingerprint sensor, or notchless design. Had this phone actually gone on sale closer to its February announcement at MWC, it would have had a much better chance.

LG is banking on its cameras and software, and has thrown in everything including the kitchen sink. It can be a little overwhelming, and what’s truly unfortunate is that some of the best and most useful little touches are buried under a lot of fluff. If you’re the type who loves discovering and playing around with little features, this phone will keep you busy for a long time.

Despite all the bloat though, camera quality is genuinely very good. If that’s what matters most to you, the LG G8s wouldn’t be bad phone to buy. On the other hand, if you value gaming-grade performance, a high-end display, great battery life, or cutting-edge design, you should look elsewhere.

I got the Amazon version where they pre-install a bunch of Amazon apps and put ads on your lockscreen in exchange for $50 off.
