ARE YOU REALLY LIVING YOUR LIFE? One of the highlights of my weekend with my nephews was finally getting to see Soul, especially with the two of them. I had only the vaguest idea what I was in for—I expected a story about a Black musician, and not much more. I had no idea how amazingly metaphysical the movie is, so I was pretty quickly surprised and intrigued. See, I’ve come to believe that our creativity is what connects us to the divine, whatever that might be. That the reason it feels so good to sing or dance or draw or solve mysteries or whatever it is that lights us up is that, in those moments, we’re connected with the creative force that gave life to everything in the universe. I genuinely don’t think it matters if you call that force God, Allah, Spirit, the Universe, or any of the other names people and religions have for that life force—I think it’s all the same idea, the same connection, and getting hung up on the name misses the point: Are you really living your life? I think an awful lot of us have learned how not to live, how to stick ourselves in boxes to make other people happy by putting ourselves last. Are we really living? Would most of us even know? You don’t have to go scale mountains or sing opera at the Met to be alive. Those moments are great...but so are the ones when you just happen to notice the maple pod twirling its way from the tree into your hand. Hearing the birds sing again in spring. Feeling the wet sand between your toes at the beach. Getting up and singing at an open mic, or holding your first gallery opening. All of it is finding that connection to that life force and paying attention to how it FEELS. I know there’s some controversy around representation with this movie, and we should hear and consider it thoughtfully.
