EHX - Big Muff
"this is not the first batch. first batch had "fuzz" instead of "tone" and the power switch was on the volume knob. ... for the first couple months they were all assembled on perf board, and theres assorted variations even within that because they were kinda winging it frankly. ... the first version Big Muffs with the perfboard layout have the tone control sent to ground via the input socket and the rest of the circuit via the output socket. I've only ever seen the conventional triangle Big Muffs with the PCBs having the circuit sent to ground via the output socket because of how it's all laid out inside."

Just wanna say I just found your blog from the sniperspy tag and binged the entirety of the severed and splintered comic in less than a hour. It's extremely well made and I got sucked into it extremely fast just to see how it all played out. Not normally a person to read something with that intensity but just the way you paced it, built it, and the expression from everyone made it worth seeing the end. Wanted to drop a ask to give you props for creating a gut wrenching story in the best way.
oh my, thank you so much! i’m really glad my comic could enrapture you like that, and you could enjoy it so much in one sitting haha

Pussy Galore - Pussy Fuzz
s.a. the pussy fuzz prototype
"... Steve Albini had 4 of these harmonic percolators made for himself and Jon Spencer, Kurt Wolf and Neil Hagerty as Christmas gifts. ... The pedal pictured was given to Jon Senum (St. Paul Bike Blog) by Jon Spencer at their show at Old Avalon Theater, Minneapolis, US (July 24, 1989)"
“The case was from Radio Shack, the pots were CTS and the board was hand etched using Datek dry transfer resist materials. The case was marked with Kroy lettering machine labels. The knobs were just like Fender amp knobs in size and shape, but were marked 0-9 in smaller sized numbers. The circuit was based on the Harmonic Percolator but was modified to sound more like Steve Albini’s personal pedal, which really sounds like no other. Steve still has one of these versions in his collection.” “Steve Ablini’s personal HP has one germanium and one silicon transistor and all of the clones that were made (maybe a total of 8-10) were made using the same circuit as his, but each one was tweaked to sound as close to his original one as possible. As I noted before, his personal one sounds like no other normal Percolator that I’ve ever heard. A few years ago (after the video interview/review) a couple of P-Fuzz prototypes were created and delivered to Steve. These new versions were made in small rectangular “MXR” style boxes. One had no controls and was preset to full on as this is Steve’s normal setting.” – Mr Bill

Three boxes and then two more ... and the French case!
"Three boxes with the same Jumbo Tone Bender fuzz circuit. And then two more with a different circuit each. Ant Macari of @macaris_official has mentioned in the Vintage and Rarities book that “Having the three knobs in a row down the middle of the deal like that also allowed us to put the same circuit in the Colorsound Supa Wah Fuzz Swell Pedal”. I wonder if this is the right way round? It seems as likely that there were surplus boards originally destined for the SWFS and they were repurposed for “specials”, like the rebranded CMI and B&M - which uniquely used the long, flat “French case”. I wonder also if this was the origin of the French case, as this board format would have required the case to be drilled differently for both knobs and jacks. The CSL Power Boost/Overdriver had the usual knob layout in the French case, but jacks either side, not together. Another outlier was the Carlsbro, which was the same as a regular Tone Bender in all respects bar the graphics. My take on the side jacks on the French case - on the three in a line boards there was no room for end jacks - but there was plenty of room in the CSL. The CSL jacks are at the side (left and right side because there’s no room for two on one side with the larger circuit board) because the rear of the French case is curved top to bottom - so it was ** never designed for rear facing jacks, the Colorsound standard ** I think there were surplus SFWS boards, which dictated the format of the French case, with side mounted jacks and a rounded rear section because they never anticipated putting jacks there. The last few pics are of the 1976 Carlsbro, which has a germanium TB circuit, and the more complex CSL from three years earlier, which has the silicon Overdriver circuit. Now I’m really confused."
such a cool post, and at least we have learned about the French case!

Fuzzie Fuzz
Scott Brockway: "Guyatone fuzzes, known under many names and brands. Generally use 2SB54, 2SB56 or 2SB175 transistor from Toshiba. Similar circuit as fuzz face with value changes. Generally not biased properly and can sound really good or really bad."
Chris Martin: "The Goya ones have a flat around the switch, the Sears and other super cheap ones don’t (shell from Angela Instruments blowout on crazytones from way back in the day)."

Emmons - Riptone Fuzz
"..."Mfd. by Emmons Industries. Belleville, New Jersey"... the more famous Emmons brand was based out of Tennessee ... There's a few things you'll notice when looking inside the Riptone; 1. is that it's clearly an FZ-1A style fuzz. 2. the components match those found in other fuzzes from late 60s NY/NJ manufacturers, and 3. all of the boards have been cracked in half! ...
safe to assume the consistently broken pcb is a result of the switch being threaded directly through the board and then attached to the enclosure.
Just a handful of stomps from an over-excited delinquent fuzz fiend probably was enough to crack the board like we see here. But what's most surprising is that it apparently didn't affect the functionality at all???
While this is an obvious flaw, it is again though not super surprising coming from an electronics company that probably wasn't regularly making guitar equipment; and the poor design is also a possible reason why we don't see too many of these floating around nowadays. "

Rosac - Nu Wa Fuzz
"Made in Bakersfield, California ca.1969-70, ... Designed by Ed Sanner of Mosrite, who was previously responsible for the ornery yet iconic Fuzzrite. Mosrite went under around 1969 and Rosac emerged from the ashes. There was a Nu Wa and a Nu Fuzz as well. This model simply combined the two circuits. It has two batteries, as they simply transplanted two individually gooped 9v “modules”, one from the Nu Fuzz, one from the Nu Wa, into one housing. They are the pink rectangles in the photos. If something goes wrong, one is in trouble, but this example is still operational. The silicon fuzz circuit apparently differs from the earlier Fuzzrite by having a tone control replacing the balance (fuzz) control. The tone control is very effective, seemingly padding out the low end on the bassier settings and getting more typical Fuzzrite treble unpleasantness when turned up. With the wah also boosting treble, there are lots of options - just don’t expect the wah to “quack” so much. The Wa circuit has no inductor, so is necessarily fairly low key. The company more or less admits this by pimping it as a treble booster in the instructions."
