What possibilities arise when technology serves humanity's highest aspirations rather than its basest desires? We could see the emergence of self-sustaining cities, where green technologies and renewable energy sources dominate, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Urban environments could become hubs of creativity and innovation, where individuals have the time and space to pursue artistic endeavors, scientific discoveries, and meaningful social connections. This vision challenges us to rethink our relationship with technology and its role in shaping a future that uplifts humanity.

The Revolt of Sisyphus: Building Futures Amid Fragmented Myths and Regenerative Ecologies
The myth of Sisyphus, as interpreted by Albert Camus, represents the tension between the human desire for meaning and the absurdity of existence—a world indifferent to human aspirations. Camus reframes Sisyphus not as a figure of punishment but of resilience, finding happiness in the task itself rather than the outcome. This notion of revolt against the absurd mirrors the architectural challenge of building futures from the fragments of myth and ecology, where truth and meaning remain elusive.
In a world shaped by climatic and ecological uncertainty, the architect’s role becomes parallel to Sisyphus’ struggle. Like Sisyphus pushing his boulder, architects today must engage in the constant, often repetitive task of designing regenerative ecologies within systems that are both fragile and speculative. This challenge involves grappling with speculative knowledge of creation, as myths, cosmologies, and scientific theories intertwine to shape how we view the built environment. The meaning embedded in architectural forms, much like the struggle of Sisyphus, is not always in the completion of the task (the building itself) but in the continuous effort to reimagine and respond to a world that defies easy understanding.
In regenerative ecologies, architecture doesn’t simply create static forms but seeks to restore, adapt, and harmonize with natural cycles. This parallels the eternal struggle of Sisyphus, where meaning is derived from process over outcome. When supported by mythological frameworks—whether they be ancient stories of creation or modern narratives of ecological renewal—these architectures attempt to generate cultural responses that provide some sense of purpose, even in a universe that offers no clear answers. This speculative blend of ecology and mythology becomes a resilient response to uncertainty, much like Camus' interpretation of Sisyphus’ task as one of quiet, conscious revolt against the absurdity of existence.

OPEN CALLS FOR DSM 2021 AWARDS, FREE ENTRIES TILL MARCH 20TH @manuel_monteserin Songdo Library competition. Our proposal is a library that looks to the future by learning from tradition. This project seeks to maintain a balance between the traditional use of a library and the new uses demanded by contemporary citizens. Three different and complementary spaces will coexist in this building: 1. A space for concentration, quiet reading and meditation. We call this area "silent space". 2. A space where you can study and learn together with other people. We will call this space "Collaborative workspace". 3. A space to communicate, expose and share. A great cultural forum. We call this space " The Plaza".  This library is inspired by traditional hanok construction, the access floor rises three meters above ground level and becomes independent from the ground. The open parking lot is located at ground level. Therefore, it allows natural ventilation and avoids the aggression to the ground that digging basements entails. A wooden structure and a ceramic tile roof enable a quick and clean construction. It also gives the building the ability to be disassembled and recycled if necessary in the future. The building also adapts to the different orientations. The south facade's deep eyes protects us from direct sunlight. On the other hand, the north facade will be closed with a curtain wall to ensure maximum light.   Architect Team Leader: Manuel A. Monteserín Lahoz Team: Manuel A. Architectuul Tour: IBA 1987
How does a city manage to plan and build exciting but affordable, intriguing yet accessible residential architecture? Some thirty years ago, Berlin did this by organizing one of the biggest architectural shows in the world! Let us show you...

During a two-hour walk, we’ll travel back to Berlin of the 1980s: the times when city, cut in half by a wall, with decaying central neighborhoods and persistent shortage of well built public housing, was in need of bold, but careful strokes. To reignite the inner city life, the sense of hope and belonging, West Berlin government turned to urban planning and architecture. For a decade starting in 1977, Southern Friedrichstadt was one of the sites of the international building exhibition known as IBA 1987, to which architects from around the world were invited to envision and build publicly funded residential projects. The task was to restore the old blocks and renew the neighborhoods, but with respect to what’s already there: to critically and cautiously reconstruct, rather than destroy and build anew. The results were vast, extraordinary, influential, criticized - and internationally recognized. Time magazine called IBA 1987 "the most ambitious showcase of world architecture in this generation".

Three decades later, it is still possible to see almost all of this exhibition here in Berlin! Come along: let’s see how the city dealt with the issues of affordable housing in the (fairly recent) past. We’ll visit the works of some of the most renowned architects in the world - such as Aldo Rossi, John Hejduk and Zaha Hadid - and some less famous, but equally inspiring. We'll discuss sustainable urban solutions, participatory design, women in architecture, porous borders, and lasting values.
The tour will be guided by Sonja Dragovic, Urban Studies MSci, participant of Future Architecture Platform and the recipient of Architectuul's Digital Publishing Fellowship.
---
Architectuul IBA Tour Thursday, Nov 14th at 12:30pm Meeting point: corner of Bernburger and Dessauer Strasse
Admissions: 20€ regular, 15€ reduced, 60€ for groups of 5. The tour will be guided in English.

Reimagining Urban Landscapes. The cities of tomorrow will challenge our current perceptions of space and design. As we continue to push the boundaries of architecture, we create opportunities for more connected, sustainable, and human-centric cities. This city atrium embodies the essence of neo-brutalism. Its stark, unapologetic forms softened by the embrace of nature. The beauty lies in the contrast, where the rigidity of concrete meets the fluidity of greenery, creating a harmonious urban retreat.
