FRYPAN DINASTY AU

It's a spin off of Saiyan Saga Au, (based on the Saiyans in Frypan concept) with some changes.

In this Au there is a huge volcano that destroyed the Frypan mountain many years ago and left the place uninhabitable. The residents of the region, seeking to hide, discovered underground caves protected by crystals with strange properties and set up a small village underground.

They soon discovered that the stones had healing powers when drinking the water at the bottom of the cave, and they amplified physical abilities when the stones were ground and the liquid consumed.

The village population, trying to defend themselves from monster attacks and people trying to steal the stones, began to consume the stones to form an army and protect the caves from invaders. The village didn't take long to become an underground city. Thus began the new reign of King Ox, which would later be passed on to his daughter Chichi.

After years in isolation. Bulma appeared accompanied by a group of Saiyans (Vegeta, Raditz, Turtles, Goku) trying to resume negotiations.

That day, Chichi was protecting the mountain from invaders when he came across Goku and tried to kill him because he thought he was an enemy. And now they're married (wat)

In addition to being a soldier for the Saiyan Empire, Goku/Kakarott and his wife protect the people of Frypan.

He doesn't consider himself a king because he has no patience for politics, so he leaves that to Chichi.

Pan likes to help his grandmother and play with the creatures that live in the caves.

Gohan is a scientist and is doing research to find a way to put out the volcano's fire.

He also teaches the common language to the inhabitants of Frypan in his spare time.

Goten helps defend the city from invaders together with Videl, when he's not at school, of course, because Chichi won't let him miss school

Vegebul fics recs!

Ad Astra by darkscreener: Bulma, Gohan and Vegeta are the only survivors after Namek. They make an uneasy alliance as they go in search of another set of dragon balls while different fractions begin to fight for control over the former Frieza Empire.

Euphorics by DesertParadox: Future Bulma said that it was a one time thing between her and Vegeta. She omitted the fact that it was a one time marathon!

Bio-mechanical Android engineering wasn't exactly in the Brief's work description, let alone repairing a prototype not meant to see the light of day yet according to the notes in Dr. Gero's specs. Were it not for him, this would seem impossible to do. Or better yet, something so inhumane wouldn't exist to begin with. His madness created this mess and the rest of the earth was stuck dealing with it, or at least everyone strong enough to stand in for the Cell Games.

With all the labor and time that went into the repairs, it was hard to believe it once it was all over. But Bulma and her father had managed to completely repair Android 16 along with some other safety precautions put in place. For what it was worth, there was at least one more fighter on their side against Perfect Cell and they got to walk away with some admittedly genius insight on bioengineering. Yet it seemed only hopes and prayers were what they could rely on the most now in these pending days to determine the future of the Earth. However, it also gave Android 16 some time to reflect on this purposeless life.

Does an android like him even get to live a life catered to his own choices? What does he do with himself now that his primary function has been made obsolete? Even his t̶̢̙͠ẁ̶̧̩̲́ō̴̝ ̷̡̞̊̚̚c̶̘̆̇͒ö̴̢͎́m̸̱͎͍̂p̶̹̻̫̀̒̽a̷͓͔̣͌͐͊n̵̡̺̜͊̌i̶͎͖͛̑ǒ̷̞̂̎ń̷̫̮̝͛s̶̹̒ who wished for this kind of freedom was gone, completely altering even his backup directive. If he had them, then he at least wouldn't be facing the likelihood of being free, but rudderless and alone.

Android 16 took a moment to look over his repairs in a mirror before completely redressing from his fix. It exceeded expectations so much that it was hard to distinguish the patchwork from his original casing—Skin? When his piercing blue gaze left its own reflection, it lingered on the bandage taped to his cheek and the dark red spot where his skin bled through.

Bulma interrupted before he could peel the bandage off, checking in on her handiwork after tending to her baby. "You're really starting to look like your old self. It's kind of hard to believe you're on our side now." She proudly declared before running down her list of last-minute diagnostics while he listened and predicted most of them. She referenced a few other things that seemed counterintuitive to Dr. Gero's intention with the Android but benefited him better under his new construction. It's like he was upgraded. Refurbished into something useful again.

Once more, it raised the question of what was to become of him now that he was fully operational again. Maybe the Briefs had an answer for that, too. He's never had to question what his role is before if he is not the one to kill Son Goku.

"You know, I'm not even sure what to call you now. From the scope of crazy notes, I got an idea of how Dr. Gero hot-wired you together, but...I don't know, do you even remember your name?"

"Android 16." He automatically answered her.

She didn't flinch at that response. Only raised the electronic pad with a screen visible from the back. "...Right. But your identity was more than just what Dr. Gero did to your body, ya know." Bulma hesitated to continue, but her scientific curiosity couldn't let her hold back bringing up the knowledge. She wanted to test her theory. " You used to work for a bunch of creeps up to no good before Dr. Gero did this to you. If you're having trouble remembering, your name is ̴̟̬͓̀͘[r̵͚̖͋e̵̮̾̽d̸̩͛͒a̵͚͒̇c̶̡̬̻̎t̵̥̑̅͝ẹ̶̈́̎̕d̷̩̭̖́̍̂]"

A soundless vision glitches through the programming code when she speaks the name. A memory. Just a visual moving slow and fast, though, blurred and colored by his once mortal senses. A memory of himself: small and embraced in nature until the wild-haired woman came to lift him in her arms speaking that same name. And then, wars. Wars and victories and death in the service of being the most dominant power in this world and the next. Bulma watched as the cybernetic blue eyes widened and completely blackened, showing nothing but the small lights behind them like white pupils in a void. As she feared, some of Dr. Gero's fail-safes were still in place. The screen of her pad flashed a warning in response to this reaction with a code quickly reading off to try to diagnose and resolve it in real time. She was grateful to have disengaged the bomb inside him but she didn't feel too safe to turn her back at the moment. She clutched a remote in her hand, thumb grazing over the red button when Android 16 suddenly blinked and the blue eyes returned.

"I am...functional again." He reassured her once registering her panicked expression, gaze flicking to her remote and back to her eyes. "It's under control."

At the Cell Games, Krillin was the first to approach Android 16. Genuinely happy to see him in better condition than when he dropped him off at Bulma's, even wearing the brand of Capsule Corp like a badge of honor where the Red Ribbon logo used to be. The Ascended Gohan joined Krillin, surprised at the sight for sure. Just like the others who kept their distance, Gohan was surprised to find an ally in someone who tried to kill his father. Even with Vegeta and Piccolo in present company. But with his father's training and Krillin's faith in the bio-android, he knew there was nothing to be concerned about from him. At least for now.

The way Android 16 stared down at him didn't come off too friendly, either. But Gohan would not flinch at it. The vacant, blue glare then flicked over his head towards his father, Goku looking back at the large android in kind. He then made his way over to join Gohan's side without breaking eye contact. Leaving a tense silence between the small huddle.

"R̷̞̺͓̘͉̋̇́̐̋͆ą̸̱̺̲͔̘̫͌d̶͍͆̍ĭ̸͔͖͌̔͠ṱ̸͆z̸͙̎̒͂͘." Goku stated with a firm acknowledgment of the form. He lightly tilted his head as he looked up at the large bio-android. In spite of his memories tied to this body, seeing his brother like this felt wrong. He could sense him, but it didn't feel like him anymore. "So it really is you. Dr. Gero did this to you?"

"An irrelevant name. Android 16 will suffice." Android 16 answered simply. A dead man's name no longer fits his artificially enhanced mortal body. Though it was better suited for the thing inside, housing his trapped agony. It puts an enigmatic smirk on his face, teetering to a familiar, wicked expression. "But... it's me."

I kept thinking about that first chichi drawing I did for chichi week, and began picturing and AU where Goku instead of living with chichi in the Paozu mountains, stayed in Ox King's Castle and became the prince of fire mountain. Chichi woulf work and study everyday to become Fire Mountain's next Monarch while Goku would be in charge on training Ox King's Soldiers (with little to no success, as he has never liked teaching that much). Sometimes they would run into each other in the halls during the day, as they focused on their duties, and some days goku would summon nimbus and escape with chichi out the window to a random pasture or the beach and pass the time while the castle burns down (metaphorically) but screw them its picnic day.

Gohan having an strict upbringing would have less to do with Chichi's "strict asian mom" gag and more with the fact that he could become the new Ox King in the future. This could also serve for Chichi to bond with her son over studies in a more relatable way instead of being a mere supervisor.

Also in here, Goku could actually train Gohan as the Ox King has the whole being a strong terrifying warrior bit going on for him (For those who only saw Z, the Ox King was one of the first "antagonist" in the original series)

Gohan Black AU - Incomplete WIP

So, I do want to make a separate post with the entire plot summary/outline for anyone interested to know, but in the meantime, here is what I'd gotten down so far for the start of it! This was started in October 2021, which feels like forever ago now.

This AU idea is dark, angsty, hurt/comfort galore due to PTSD Trunks and Cell, and has the OT3: Gohan/Trunks/Cell. I wrote a brief scene between Gohan Black and Cell that shows some of the brutality of Black, but I'll save that in a separate post too 😊

Altering the timeline was always a risk, but Trunks knew it was only a necessary one to take when things were most desperate. The first time was necessary for Goku to live; the next was defeating the androids, which didn’t go at all according to plan due to his initial manipulation of events. Instead of androids 17 and 18 posing a threat, it was Cell. But once Gohan defeated the latter, things were looking up for the future when he returned and was able to destroy each one of Gero’s creations in his own timeline. It was peaceful. The world rebuilt. Humanity pressed on and survived for several years.

Until him.

Believing the situation too dire to ignore and leave to fate, Trunks once again ventured back to ask for help. Upon arrival, he immediately felt nostalgic. Not much had changed, and it resembled the period of tranquility he had known for seven years after ridding the planet of the androids. He couldn’t restore his timeline this time on his own. He needed assistance from the most powerful warrior he knew.

“Trunks!” Bulma exclaimed happily as she rushed outside to find out the source of engine noise in the front yard. She nearly tackled him to the ground from running to hug him.

“Hey mom,” he greeted with a small laugh.

“It’s so good to see you! You’ve grown. And your hair!”

“Yeah, gone through some changes, you could say.”

“You’ve grown a lot in this timeline too! Little You is off playing with Goten right now, but I know he’ll be excited to meet you when he gets home.”

“Goten, huh?”

“Yes! Chi-Chi had him not long after you left. They’ve been pretty much inseparable ever since. And then Gohan being a big brother to you both,” she ended with a smile.

The mention of his mentor’s name instantly sent his heart into a flutter. “Speaking of Gohan, is he around? I need to talk to him.”

“He should be in school at the moment. I imagine he’ll swing by on his way home to see if Goten and Little You are here. It’s become a habit.”

“Ah great.”

“That’ll give us a chance to catch up! Lord knows where your father is right now, but he’ll be back in time for dinner.”

As she ushered her grown son inside, the butterflies of anxiety were beginning to mix with those of delighted anticipation to once again be face to face with Gohan. While he had connected and bonded with his mentor in the future, he felt an even stronger connection with him after spending time together in the lead up to the Cell Games. Gohan, whether as a pre-teen or adult, held an enormously special place in Trunks’ heart, one of deep respect and beloved friend. To be reunited with him, even if it was only for a few days, was something he would greatly cherish.

It was late afternoon when the front door burst open and childish laughter filled the area.

“Sounds like they’re home!” Bulma explained, getting up from the table. Trunks followed suit, and they both headed into the living room to discover two young boys running around the furniture and a teenage boy chasing them.

“Hey guys! We have company!”

The three stopped and turned, and the moment Trunks met Gohan’s eyes, he felt an instantaneous rush of admiration and affection for the now twenty-year-old Saiyan fighter. Even as Bulma introduced him to his child-self and Goten, Trunks was paralyzed as Gohan approached with the brightest smile he had ever seen.

“Good to see you, Trunks!” Gohan said chipperly. “What brings you back?”

“Well, I….” Trunks felt embarrassed for his inability to formulate a proper sentence. “I um….I need your help. Can we talk outside?”

Gohan, catching the underlying seriousness yet completely missing the other reason for the awkwardness, nodded and said, “Sure!”

“Hey mom, we’re going to take a walk. Be back in a bit.”

“Okay! Just make sure you’re back in time for dinner. Gohan, are you and Goten staying?”

“Nah, mom wants us home tonight,” Gohan replied with a smile. “I’ll be back to pick you up, Goten!”

The two kids had already returned to chasing one another, so it was no surprise Goten didn’t acknowledge the statement.

Heading into the front yard and strolling down the street to a nearby park, Gohan waited a minute before starting the conversation.

“Everything okay?”

“Not exactly.” “Don’t tell me more androids.”

“No, luckily no more androids. I was able to get rid of them and Cell before he could cause any real trouble.” He failed to notice the slight tenseness Gohan suddenly had at the mention of Cell’s name. “Things were really nice after that. Everyone rebuilt and the world was thriving….”

“But?”

They sat on a bench and Trunks clenched his hands into fists. The abrupt change in his mood severely worried Gohan.

“But then he came.”

Gohan quirked an eyebrow. “He?”

“It’s….You.”

This made Gohan’s eyes widen considerably. “Me?!”

“Not you exactly, but someone who looks just like you when you were my mentor and fighting to keep us safe from the androids. He calls himself Black, and he’s pure evil. He’s already destroyed countless planets, and now he’s come to Earth to slowly cleanse it of us mortals. That’s why I’ve come here again. To ask you for help. He’s stronger than anyone I’ve ever seen, far stronger than Cell. I knew if there was anyone who stood a chance against him with me, it’d be you.”

Gohan looked down at his hands nervously, the weight of the words sinking in. He’d been keeping up with regular training; however, if this person was enough to have Trunks this desperate again and wielding a higher power level than what Cell had, he doubted even his own abilities. Still, he couldn’t deny helping a friend in need.

“What do you need me to do?” he asked quietly.

“My mom still has Cell’s old time machine, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Since we both can’t fit into mine, I need you to take that one to come with me.”

“She hasn’t repaired it, though. It’s not functional.”

“Damn it,” Trunks cursed, gritting his teeth.

“I’m sure she could fix it up no problem. But it may take some time. Plus, if he’s as strong as you say, I feel like I might need to do some additional training.”

“Okay….I can probably hold him off for a few more months. That should be plenty of time, right?”

“Right.”

“I can leave the coordinates with you for when you’re ready since I might not make it back.”

“Just don’t die in the meantime, okay?” Gohan teased and playfully punched his shoulder to lighten the mood.

Trunks blushed slightly and smiled. “Yeah, of course.”

How did Sotarra, Mirin, and Goten meet Broly? What do they think of him?

She met him by coincidence. Sotarra forages for ingredients in the realm of the living for her own practices of potion making and spellcrafting. One day, the Demoness discovered him wreaking havoc near one of her foraging spots. At first, she simply began to observe him. Get him used to her presence and offer him food before stepping away, as non-threatening and careful as one could be when they have a genuine interest in another creature. Sotarra continued to do this until eventually, he allowed her to be close and spend time with him. It then grew as any normal bond does, conversation, sharing meals, and offering support when needed. It then grew into something deeper...

She adores him and has (unofficially) adopted him as her son. She loves him dearly and is largely permissive of his behavior.. however, there are some things that she tries to make him reconsider or think about, such as his relationship with Mirin and help him find purpose in life despite being the strongest thing known in the universe. There is an AU I'm working on where she adopts him as her own when he is very young either due to straight-up kidnapping him from Paragus or his father gets killed/goes missing and he is left without a guardian. She then raises him as a 'demon prince' and teaches him magic, etiquette, and he's doted on by servants, retainers, and his Saiyan anger gets managed in a much more healthy way because mother dearest can hold her own against him or find outlets that don't turn him crazy.

Mirin found him eating from her favorite apple tree and noticed his tail immediately. Despite how often she was punted, shaken about for what food she had stowed away in her clothes, or pushed into a river, for a long time she stuck to him like glue. She was worried about him, but she also very much was intrigued by the fact he was the first creature like her.. human, but with a monkey's tail. Mirin knows little about her own Saiyan heritage and thought he could give her answers... from then, we have different AU's in terms of what she thinks about him:

The Future Will Bear its Fangs: In this AU, she is extremely apathetic and wary of him. Broly went into a jealous rage after his human mate decided to give Mirin attention instead of him.. he gave her the beating of a lifetime, broke her spine, and yeeted her into space before proceeding to burn down and pillage her sacred village. She then joined the time patrol, and grew into someone who could overpower him and beat him back because of the threats that force put her up against. She changed her name to Soju to reflect this. Standard Verse: Where the jealous rage didn't happen, she just sees him as her grumpy big brother and usually tags along with Goten and Trunks to bother him. She often finds herself trying to bury her lil' body inside of his mane, like a nesting instinct takes over.

Goten accidentally stumbled across him while hunting for bugs and lizards and basically has the same backstory and behavior as Mirin.

He likes him but does worry a lot about him because that anger will make him do something he regrets, and Goten doesn't want Broly to lose any more than he probably already has. Sees him as a big brother of sorts, but has no idea about what happened with Mirin in the AU where she defects from the timeline. Goten also uses Broly as a consultant of sorts when he feels conflicted or upset. Not that he doesn't trust Gohan, but he appreciates how Broly is always honest.

Raven: Traditionally a feminine name, originating from Old English. As a given name, commonly meant as "dark", "dark-haired", "wise" or "thieving"

Doyle: Traditionally a masculine surname. Originating from Irish. Commonly meant as "dark stranger" or "dark foreigner"

Given that Raven is a rat who are notorious for being sneaky thieves in myths and lore and taking food throughout history, and that I myself am a dark skinned dark haired person AND that Raven has a dark skin shade of color for her fur and dark colored hair, I think this wildly checks out very well 😹 I also irl have a history of often being the lone black girl in the area or the token black girl of a group so "dark stranger" also fits asfadalkshflaksf

With Goku dying from the full brunt of the attack and Piccolo temporarily out Raditz tries to flee into the near by wooded mountain region

"I can't believe we decided to stay here." Roots gruffed to Orion, Orion sighs and stared at her member of her Force.

"What other choice do we have? I doubt Frieza will allow us back and Ginyu is dead!" Orion said, exasperated.

"Yet, you did choose to stay with the same people who killed your husband." Roots said.

"Look, I prefer we don't get into this right now." Orion snaps, the car made a pit stop, and she gets out of the car, holding her sleeping son. Zarburne was the son between her and Ginyu and he was only 4 years old. He was named after her best friend Zarbon. But his name was pronounced Zar-Burn.

After being defeated by the Z-Warriors and having lost her 3 men, she was spared due to the orders of "Prince Vegeta" due to her being the only female left in their species. She didn't really care for Vegeta as she found him to be annoying and arrogant. So when she had the chance, she left Earth with Zarburne, Stard, Vex and Roots.

She went back to Earth weeks later realizing she needed a better life for her son. While she was sad about Ginyu's death, she knew he wanted her to be happy with their son.

She stared at this male, he seemed to have silver(?) hair, she narrowed her eyes, and next to him stood two other boys. One of them looked like her son, while another looked like... Hm, she didn't know, he started to tell them about some sort of Androids attacking. Orion tuned them out.

After awhile, she was sitting by herself, tending to Zarburne when the males alongside the mysterious Silver Haired Male.

"Hello, who are you?" Orion asked. The male that looked like her son smiled.

"I am your Son Zarburne from the future!" Future Zarburne said, Orion's eyes widened.

"Really? Then who is that?" She pointed to the other male.

"That's my brother, or your other son." Zarburne said. Orion's eyes widened.

"No way, who was the father? Don't tell me, Vegeta?"

"No."

"Yamcha?"

"No."

"Tien?"

"Nope."

"Krillin?"

"Gods no!"

"Piccolo?"

"Eeh... Kinda, but not really?"

"Then tell me!"

"When you see him you'll know."

Bulma and Vegeta ended up together, they had a son named Trunks, the name of the mysterious figure that arrived here with her future kids. At first Future Zarburne's words made no sense at all.

But then, a bunch of rapid Kis that's similar to Vegeta, Piccolo and Goku. She didn't know what this was, and went to meet with them. That's when she saw him.

A hulking Android.

The perfect being. For a split second, Cell turned around and smirked.

"Ah, it's you. You're so pretty and beautiful..." Cell said, his pink... eyes staring into her own brown eyes. "The mother... of my children." Cell croons, stepping forward.

Orion got into a fighting stance. "Who are you?"

Cell snickers and smiled. His enchanting Pink Eyes gleamed.

"I'm Cell, your future husband~" Cell walked up to Orion and Orion felt like she was unable to find a hiding place.

"...No... No you-" She began.

"Yes I am." Cell purrs. "You know that kid with Future Zarburne~?"

"...It can-"

"That's our son."

She walked back with Cell, the others, including Trunks well Future Trunks were shocked.

"What are you doing with him?" Vegeta snaps.

"Yeah!" Gohan blurts out.

"He's... Agreed to behave." Orion mumbled.

"Behave!?" Vegeta sputters. "I hardly even fucking believe it!"

"Look, trust me."

"Absolutely NOT! Are we seriously going to let her keep Cell?" Vegeta turned to face the others. Cell was stroking Orion's hair creepily.

"We kept you, Vegeta." Orion said. Bulma snickers.

"Ahhaha! kept Vegeta! Oh that's... That's hilarious!" Bulma laughed, Vegeta rolled his eyes.

"Oh whatever, I don't care. Just-" Vegeta began, but seeing Cell look intimidating his eyes gazed away.

"Just what?" Cell asked.

"Nothing."

I present to you: My take on the Future Gohan Survives AU

Somehow, Gohan survived in his final stand against the androids. Whether if it's by the will of Kami, or pure concentrated luck, he lived. He's beaten, broken, when Trunks found him he thought that he was dead and in his grief he finally went Super Saiyan. Of course, when he took a minute to really try and feel his Ki, he discovered that Gohan was very much alive, but, he was in a coma.

After Trunks tries to take down the androids and obviously fails. But, once Trunks finally recovers and Bulma completes the time machine, Trunks is finally ready to go back in time, in fact, he's *in* the time machine when Bulma gets the alert.

Gohan's awake

Trunks and Bulma run over to the recovery branch as fast as they can. Gohan is up and worried. He's terrified. After the two of them try and calm Gohan, Trunks and Bulma give him the biggest hug. Gohan takes a good look at Trunks

Gohan, tearing up: "You've... gotten so big!"

After everyone has their tearful reunion, Bulma fills Gohan in on the plans.

Bulma: "...and now we're about to send Trunks to the future to give your father the cure to his heart virus"

Gohan: "and you think that's going to work?

Trunks: "hopefully"

Gohan: "Okay, I'll go, are we still going to when my father got back from the Yardrats to fight Frieza?"

Bulma: "Ummm Trunks is going. Not you. You literally just got up, you shouldn't be moving around like this"

Gohan: "Do you honestly think Trunks should be going over there to beat Frieza? He could barely match me in my base form. I need to give him a lot more training before he can match Frieza."

Trunks: "But, Mr. Gohan, I'm stronger now. I can even go Super Saiyan!"

Gohan takes a pause. Trunks can already go Super Saiyan? He didn't notice at first but Trunks' ki definitely feels like Vegeta's after he learned how to go Super Saiyan. It's not an unreasonable conclusion that Trunks figured out how to go Super Saiyan by himself. Then, Gohan felt queasy. He realized...

Trunks probably went Super Saiyan when he died

Gohan was horrified. He was pissed. Once again, because of the Androids, somebody he loves has had to suffer. He was angry at himself for even training Trunks. He was no better than his father. He hated himself for allowing the past to repeat itself. He thought he was better than this. He wanted to be better than all of this. He's no better than his father, forcing him to train under who knows who and then leaving because he thought it would be a good idea. He was a failure. No time to think about all of this. Trunks has become his own man because of Gohan's failure and that's just how the cookie crumbled. He'd better see if Trunks is capable of taking on Frieza at his current level.

Trunks: "Mr. Gohan, are you okay?"

Gohan: "Go outside. I'm sparring you"

Bulma, trying to hold Gohan back: "Dammit, Gohan, you just recovered. You can't go out fighting"

Gohan, looking at Bulma with a look of determination: "Bulma, I almost died. I'm stronger than ever due to the Zenkai Boost. Hell, I could probably even beat the androids at this rate. Now put your hand the hell off of my shoulder."

Bulma takes her hand off of Gohan's shoulder. She's scared. She's remembering how Goku was when King Piccolo killed Krillin. She knows that Gohan is just scared and overreacting. She doesn't blame him for that. She completely gets it. She remembered almost going in guns blazing full kamikaze when her baby boy came back beaten and broken because of those damned androids. But she realizes that she's probably going to have to be the one to teach Gohan how to deal with these feelings. The only problem is will Gohan accept it? She figures probably. But she's going to be subtle just in case

Trunks was afraid, too. He'd never seen his master be that angry. Was Gohan going to be this bitter forever?

Bulma, sounding concerned after Trunks has left the room: Gohan, I get that you're angry you weren't there. But, it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself. You're beginning to look like Go-"

Gohan, turning on Super Saiyan out of rage: "Don't you dare finish that name."

Bulma: "..."

Gohan turning his Super Saiyan back off: "You're right, Bulma. I know you are. But I failed your son, I failed you. Just let me be bitter for a little bit. When those androids are dead. I'll try my best to mellow out."

Gohan lets out an exhausted smile. Yet, it still has the same warmth as his father's

"Don't worry! Everything's going to get better."

Thoughts on the socio-economic implications of mass murder in Dragon Ball Z and the eroding value of sentient life as the series progresses?

Excellent question! I have given immense thought on this very topic; simply put, the stakes aren’t as high as the series likes to think they are anymore. Frieza felt like a legitimate threat in the beginning because he represents the commodification of genocide and colonialism and he stood in direct opposition of Goku, who is essentially a stand-in for the proletariat class. The dragon balls still had value and limits back then- resurrection only works once per person, and there are limits on what you can you can use your single wish for.

The Cell Saga was entertaining because we were shown that there’s a future where the Z-Fighters can’t save everyone. They HAVE to kill the Androids and Cell or else the entire planet is literally doomed. The ending was kind of an ass-pull, but it ended with Goku’s death and the series was left in the hands of Gohan who was shown to be more sensitive to the mortality of himself and his comrades in comparison to his father.

By the Buu saga however, what is the purpose for anything? The afterlife is a revolving door for Goku, and the dragon balls can now grant three wishes and even reverse mass-genocide if the user feels inclined to do so. So what if another threat comes to earth? As long as you keep Dende alive, you can fix practically anything. In the worst-case scenario, Xenoverse Trunks can show up and give you an advance warning or personally fix the timeline himself. This issue worsens by the time you get to Dragon Ball Super. At this point, the writers know they can’t kill off Goku AGAIN, but he’s become so powerful that they can’t give him any challenge that doesn’t have the earth hang in the balance. The introduction of alternate universes was interesting, but they don’t really matter, do they? Whis can literally turn back the clock if the Z fighters mess up, and you could literally skip the entire tournament of power because all of the slain universes just get wished back in the end. They even bring back Frieza just because they could! Never mind the fact that he’s a mass-murderer and has explicitly told Goku that he would continue to conquer planets upon his resurrection. It doesn’t matter anymore if people suffer from the Frieza Force, because the Z-fighters don’t give a shit about other planets, and if the Earth was under threat they have multiple outlets to fixing any damage created.

Dragon Ball (Comic Book AU)

Currently brainstorming an AU where Dragon Ball was an American comic book series created in 1955, with certain changes and fan response. I'm presently brainstorming Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super since I'm most familiar with those series:

1980s: Everyone raves about the beginning of Goku's adult era, particularly with the world-building and his origins (though I do prefer recent retcons). This decade's comic covered the Saiyan Saga and Freiza arcs.

1990s: I always hear that this was the golden age for the property, as it had the Cell saga. In particular, the 90s run received critical acclaim for introducing the future version of Trunks Briefs as well as giving Gohan more of the spotlight, with some rumors saying that he would take up the role of "Kakarot" in place of Goku. Then they dropped the ball and threw Gohan to the back burner because writer Isaac Martinez couldn't see Gohan abandoning "his dream" of being a scholar and let Goku take the focus once more. I really hated that, and I hated how Future Trunks and Android 18 were hypersexualized from this period on. They've lightened up a bit on it now, but still (I did like how 18 eventually dyed her hair blonde and everyone compared her and her brother to X-Men's Emma Frost and Shinobi Shaw). Plus I think that the "Cooler" and "Bojack" arcs are pretty overlooked.

2000s: The 2000s was probably a huge amount of turmoil for the series. When writer Dan Golder was brought on for the series, he was a big fan of the 1980s eras where Goku was the main star, and felt that by having him being a good father made the series "boring." As such, he created what some fans call the "bad dad" era, where Goku was a hero first and foremost, featuring his family very little, if at all. The weird part about it was that subsequent writers not only followed his lead, but also featured other characters as good parents (ie Krillin and Vegeta), almost as if to highlight the fact that being a bad parent made you a better hero. Needless to say, fans were NOT pleased, and they had toned it down a bit by the time the Majin Buu era came along, but the writing seemed to suffer the same curse as the Cell Saga when it came to Gohan, hyping him up only to put him down. The label did try to salvage this by giving him the identity of Saiyaman (inspired by the Ginyu force, who at this point were retconned as gay/bi men, if I recall correctly; I think the Saiyan race as a whole was almost retconned as bi as well, but that idea was cancelled) and a short-lived spinoff series, but the costume wasn't super inspired and the series felt more like a parody than an actual attempt at making Gohan the breakout star he was meant to be. Outside of the main series, several AU comics did well (one of them concerning Future Trunks; the GT series also gained some followers), but the main series had few blips of greatness during the 2000s.

2010s: By 2015, the series had kind of settled into the station of mediocrity, and it wasn't until Masako Nozawa came onto the scene that the series went into a more critically and financially successful direction, taking inspiration from previous Dragon Ball Arcs over the decades in order to appease new and longtime fans. It was during this time that Gohan took more focus again, though in a much more serious direction that rivaled Goku's successful runs. Androids 17 and 18 were featured more in the series, with Nozawa having them address each other by their birth names (as had been previously confirmed in the 1980s), and their backstories being fleshed out more. Broly was made canon in the main universe, and Future Trunks returned to the present for another story arc. Vegeta also rose to prominence, with some fans suspecting that Goku would soon die and Vegeta would take Goku's mantle. Along with this, alternate universes were addressed in the "Universe Survival" saga, leading to speculation that another AU comic would be made, focusing on Frost and/or the three saiyans.

P.S. Even though this is designed as being made by an American comic publisher, I'm unsure if Goku's home would be in America or westernized Japan; either way, the Japanese influence and cultural aspects are a lot less tokenized by the 21st century. Plus I own NONE of this art.

Susanoo, using mimicry as (Evil ki) Super Saiyan Rosé, and a little bit of explanation under the cut bc of the AU

Susanoo comes from the Future timeline, born in Age 780 (like it was meant to be with his main timeline counterpart) to Shin and Turnip, after the Saiyan started living in the Sacred World of Kai with him. Susanoo spent his childhood peacefully, soon becoming Supreme Kai apprentice while Trunks was finishing his studies. During this time, Shin and Turnip aid Trunks against Fused Zamasu (in this AU fused with Gohan Black), and when the two die they tell Trunks to take care of Susanoo himself. Unfortunately, Susanoo mysteriously disappears when the Sacred World of Kai is destroyed in half during a fight against Zamasu. Trunks, becoming a Time Patroller, never knows about the final verdict of the battle. Susanoo comes back after almost 70 years, thanks to Chronoa, and later joins the Time Patrol as well. Currently, he is the only living being present in this timeline, thus the only deity in all universes (not counting the Angels).

I know I will get the question "How did he learn Super Saiyan Rosé and mimicry? Why the evil ki?". Since he couldn't finish his studies as a Supreme Kai due to his family being dead (similarly to Shin), he had to learn everything by himself. Being half-Saiyan but also half-Shinjin, it was obvious he would learn another kind of Super Saiyan, more divine, and so Super Saiyan Rosé, despite the fact he didn't like it because of Gohan Black/Zamasu. Since in the future timeline Supreme Kais can interfere with their own creation and so help Hakaishins more, Susanoo also learned Beerus could use mimicry, faking to be possessed. Knowing this, and since everyone can use mimicry, he decided to try it against Fused Zamasu, despite being amateur.

Dragon Ball: Lost Legends

Two Super Saiyan Gods, Goku and Vegeta start their journey in exploring Lost Legends in the world, in an alternate spin of various Legends. From El Dorado to the 12 labors of Heracles, to the hand of King Midas. Even the lost city of Atlantis.
