Internet Idols Timeline
I've been loving how people have realized that internet personalities are Western civilization re-adopting the geinou/idol/variety models back from Asia (in terms of appeal mechanisms and fan consumption patterns), but here's a rough timeline-ish to put things into perspective: The Red Vs. Blue trailer was put up in 2002. The first RvB episode premiered on April 1, 2003. (The Minimoni special concert where Yaguchi Mari graduates, Mika Todd becomes leader, and Takahashi Ai joins is on March 29. In the week of March 31, SMAP's single Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana is #1 on Oricon for the 3rd week.) Angry Video Game Nerd's first internet episode is uploaded May 25, 2004. (Berryz release Piriri to Yukou on May 26. NEWS are #1 on Oricon the week of May 24.) TotalBiscuit originally hailed from WowRadio. I wasn't able to find out if it started online, but at some point it was definitely an internet podcast. WoWRadio began in 2005. (The wild ride of MM leadership Iida-->Yaguchi-->Yossie. C-ute is formed. DBSK debut in Japan. AAA debut. AKB48 holds its first auditions.) The Idolmaster arcade game is released. Nostalgia Critic first appears on Youtube in July 2007. (On July 18, SNSD perform ITNW on School of Rock, and AKB48's BINGO is released. Ongaku Gatas and Buono! are formed in July.) Tyler Oakley's first video is uploaded October 2007. Grace Helbig begins vlogging in November 2007. (Wonder Girls' Tell Me debut performance is September 7. C-ute's single Tokkaiko Junjou is released October 17, as is Kanjani8's It's My Soul. In November, KAT-TUN release Keep the Faith. MM releases Mikan. SNSD release their first album.) TGWTG is launched April 2008. (High-King is announced April 19. AKB48 Team A's 4th stage debuts. SCANDAL perform at Sakura-con. Suju-M debuts.) Momoiro Clover is formed May 17, 2008. Achievement Hunter is launched July 2008. (Perfume's love the world is #1 on Oricon that week. SKE48's 1st gen members are announced July 30.) The first RT podcast (Drunk Tank) is posted in December. (EXILE and KAT-TUN will top Oricon in the surrounding weeks. Shugo Chara Egg debut. Dempagumi Inc. release their first indies single. KARA release their Pretty Girl album.) The Pewdiepie channel is registered April 2010. From what I can dig up, Momoclo's first Ustream is in July 2010? July 2010 is also the earliest Tokyo Girls Style Ustream date I can find. This is right around when the first Rooster Teeth Animated Adventure is posted, and the first Vidcon was also July 2010. Love Live launches in August 2010. The first video RT podcast, Internet Box podcast, and RTX are all 2011. Hannah Hart's first show (My Drunk Kitchen) begins in 2011. Twitch.tv begins in June 2011.
