We have gotten used to watching shows using anthromorphic creatures as their main characters to drive their story forward. Movies and shows like “My Little Pony,” “Tom and Jerry” and even “Digimon” have animal characters that one way or another exemplify our human nature. But did you know that there is a community of people that are fans of this story telling device?
And they are called furries.
So, what is a Furry then?
Furry is a hobby where the fans have an interest towards animal characters with human characteristics. Such characters can be found in many media such as movies, shows, games, literature, toys, cosplay, art, and many more, for any ages.
Sometimes, Furry refers to the person who is a fan of the furry hobby. It can also be used to refer to “animal characters with human characteristics”.
Furry characters can be Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Crash Bandicoot, and many characters from shows such as “Zootopia,” “The Lion King,” “Secret Life of Pets,” “How To Train Your Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda,” among others.
Who are into the hobby?
Furries come in all shapes and sizes. And when it comes to who’s into the hobby, the furry community has always been one of the more inclusive communities worldwide. That also is true to the Philippines furry community.
In fact, the Philippine Furry community has a whole slew of enthusiasts. Ranging from entrepreneurs, to artists, designers, even engineers and academians are active furries. Age wise, the Furry community is open to all ages, but majority of the members are around 18-24 years old.
Difference?
While there’s a collective global community of Furries, the Philippines’ Furry community sets itself apart.
The local furry community is more open to people knowing that they’re Furries and welcome those who are familiar and not too familiar with the hobby. In fact, local Furries don’t hide what they are in the Philippines and are more than happy to explain their hobby to anyone who is interested or wants to know more about it.
This is also true in how the local community treats its conventions. FurryPinas, the annual premiere furry convention in the country has a more welcoming attitude than most furry conventions elsewhere. The organizers take on a more Eastern and Western attitude in the organization and aims to making the most amount of people happy while sharing the love of furry to furry Hobbyist and non-hobbyist alike.
This difference in stance makes FurryPinas a more observed furry convention within the region.
About FurryPinas 2019
On its second year, FurryPinas 2019 is the largest furry convention in Asia serving as the official annual hub for the furry hobby in the Philippines.
The convention aims to provide attendees a more active participation compared to other cons. Providing a more welcoming avenue for those who want to understand and know more about the hobby while providing a safe and happy space for Furries to just have fun, socialize, and enjoy the hobby as a group.
FurryPinas is set to happen on June 8-9, 2019 at the Bayanihan Center in Pasig City, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is near SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.
For more information about FurryPinas 2019 you can head to the FurryPinas 2019 site or fanpage you can also check out the Facebook event page to get updated.

Kintsugi: 2019 Year-Ender
kintsugi (uncountable)
The Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold or similar material, highlighting the cracks instead of disguising them. (Wiktionary)
Nothing can describe the year better than kintsugi. The description cannot fully encapsulate the beauty of the output. A once broken pot mended by gold sounds impractical, but beautiful.
The achievements this year were the gold that filled the cracks. Today, its time to highlight those golden moments.
Improvement Game
This year, I was far better than what I was years ago.
From 2012 - 2018, my art slowly crawled up in terms of improvement. It was subtle, but it was there. To the untrained impatient eye (like mine) it felt painful to walk the slow pace. It seemed like nothing would be able to give that one push to move faster.
It was, until March rolled around.
A simple drawing that referenced a photo taken launched me into learning about color theory, one of the first fundamentals of art I learned. After that, my art went a full 180. It got better and better. It seems embarrassing to admit that I've studied my fundamentals after 6 years of drawing, but its the best embarrassment I'm proud of doing. My drawings got near-instantly better. It produced the improvement I've always wished for. Nothing can ever match the happiness of finishing one piece, comparing it with the one before it, and seeing the leap. Kids, please use the internet as much as you can. Its full of resources.
Not only that, but reconnecting with an old friend changed a toxic mindset plaguing art. It was more humanistic, in a sense. Selfish to some, in a way, yes, but self-love always starts with... yourself. It was a tough mindset to rewire, but the effects have been positive so far. Thank you so much, bud.
Everyone else seemed to have agreed with the change, and a surge of people seemed to have agreed and stayed on along with the ride. Honestly, its shocking, but thank you guys for all the support. I don't say it much, but I really really love y’all. Thank you for making my 2019.
Joining the World
How could I forget this year when I broke milestone after milestone. When more people saw my art than before. It’s been a wild ride, 2019.
Along with the sudden spike in art quality came an influx of new people. The sudden change from no one to someone is something I’ve never learned how to handle. There were some mental lapses and beginner’s mistakes, but slowly I learned the truth that apparently some people come to see me be... me. Its quite shocking to me, but apparently that’s the end all of it.
After a rough set of years for my social life however, it was tough to connect with fellow artists, to the point impostor syndrome was the way of life for a few months. It is still there, but compared to last year, this year was also the year for wounds to heal, and to mingle with fellow artists. Furrypinas gave me the sense of the human aspect of artists. I’m still chasing that human feeling in art, but perhaps its good to let the next year roll in with that.
I’ve joined a lot of discord servers full of furries and art and full of those who have made it and those still going on their journey. It felt weird at first, trying to mingle, but slowly by slowly I entered more and more and got more and more help. Eventually building confidence in myself and trust in others, I made my first fan art for Beyond The Western Deep and it got featured! That is an achievement past years’ self would be shocked to know.
Compared to the past few years I’ve been living in a hole, I’ve reached out more than usual, and its a damn good place to start the new year. To those artists who let me in despite how I think I am, thank you for making my 2019.
Involvements
Not going to lie, there were a lot of things I joined this year. More than the introverted me would ever think.
I worked for three events in college as the publicity head, which I capped off with an award from the student council. I joined PALS and took a leap of faith and joined UP Graphic, after 2 years without an organization. I ended up becoming the graphics editor for the college paper, and then became the main designer for the college’s lantern parade. There are also some stuff there, but I can’t quite say it yet!
Okay, enough about art you dork.
There are other achievements outside art. Well, for starters this year I ended up as another college scholar/deans list/honor student or whatever you call it for the fourth time in a row. I joined a self-defense class and made new friends along the way. I also found out that I’m kinda good with a knife (wanna try)? I became more sociable, and less of a tunnel rat. Trust issues are still there, but it’s less prevalent.
I’ve slowly itched to record more music covers and pray to god I get a better mic soon. Its fun just doing it, you know?
But the greatest recovery ever, was going to therapy.
It was the strongest leap of faith I ever took, but I’m so thankful it payed off. Everything felt clear, and easier to breathe. To be frank, it was that and the old friend that really changed things for my head. Its like a big weight has been lifted. There are no words to describe it. If you feel like you need it, please seek professional help.
Final goodbye for 2019.
Nothing in this post can fully encapsulate how much I am grateful for this year. I’m happy to say that I’m leaving 2019 a far better person than I was at the start of the year. Last year, I thought 2018 would be the peak of everything, and turns out I was wrong.
However, I didn’t get here by myself. Its time to say thanks to those who have got me here so far.
To my friends, the folks who I confide in, my support system, my everything, thank you guys so much for being there since day one, and the multiple resets that came along with it. Thank you for listening to my problems and for helping me get back on my feet. I would be half the man I am today without you guys.
To my discord server, thank you so much for filling my life with laughter and fun things to talk about. Thank you for all the fun memories we’ve had this year, and I’m looking forward to new memories in the years to come.
To the artists I look up to, thank you for helping me squeeze myself in slowly into the fandom. Thank you for the welcoming hugs, the fun conversations, and even the support coming from you guys.
To my new followers, new fans of my art, thank you for believing in me. There were times I couldn’t do the same for myself, but you guys were my reminder that there were people who would care when a simple person’s bright light would flicker.
Rest in peace, ninang, and my two teachers. I hope you are proud of what I’ve become.
Thank you 2019.
Happy New Year, and here’s to 2020 and here’s to all the trials and tribulations that come along with it!
