The Checker Table Refurbish: Part I
Happy Monday Everyone!
Ok, some of you may remember this table from my posts last week...
I originally bought this table several years ago from a thrift store for $9....and I refurbished the top of it using only furniture markers. But it needs to be refurbished again, so I’m going to take you through that process today and tomorrow.
So let’s get right to it...
As you can tell from these pics, the tabletop is flipable. On one side you have the checkerboard top (in the pic above) and on the other side you have a solid, black surface....
Today were going to take the first step in refurbishing this table, and its an easy one! We’re simply going to repaint the solid black top.
I use this table in my upstairs bonus room, and you may recall that I already have two pieces of furniture in that room that are brown & seaside blue. Here they are....
And I really want the checker table to blend in as well, so we’re going to change the black top to seaside blue.
So we’ll be using this paint once again...
I just sprayed it on, and in less than 2 minutes, the top went from this...
to this....
Easy!
And that’s actually all I’m doing with it for today since it needs to dry for a couple of hours. Tomorrow we’ll work on the checkered side! So stay tuned!

The Checker Table Refurbish: Part II
Alrighty! Moving on to the second part of this refurbish!
Yesterday, in Part I, I painted over the black top and made it seaside blue. And here’s how that turned out...
Much brighter and lighter than when it was painted black!!!
Now, the next step is to use a couple of furniture markers to enhance the tabletop and hide a few scratches. Here’s what we’re working with...
You can see scratches all around the the edges and corners, and some long streaks across the top. But we’re going to take care of that with these...
The 2 colors I picked for the furniture markers are black and maple. Honestly, none of the furniture markers in my collection match the brown wood exactly, but I tried to get as close as I could.
**Before moving on with this refurbish, I want to point out that there are many ways the checkered top could have been redone. But this project is simply to illustrate a quick fix using only furniture markers.**
Ok, so I’m actually going to skip ahead and show a pic of the finished checkered top. And here it is....
Nicely enhanced! I simply went over the black squares with the black marker (easy!), and did some touchups in a few of the brown squares with the maple marker. Then I used the maple marker to fill in all the brown squares around the edges and make them a little darker than the brown squares in the middle. Just a little extra flare!
*A tip about working with furniture markers: Keep a wet cloth or paper towel with you while you’re working. Furniture markers dry pretty fast, so if you make a mistake, it’s handy to have a wet cloth with you to fix it immediately.
So here are all the finished pics...(and remember, the top can flip over)
AND, since this table will be going in my upstairs bonus room, here’s a pic of all the furniture in that room together!! Remember, my first post was about refurbishing the side table on the left...and now the room is complete! Yay!
So there you have it! Another easy refurbish...and this one didn’t cost anything! I already had the spray paint and the furniture markers. But if I had to purchase them, it would likely have been under $6 total. And I already had the table, which cost $9 several years ago from a thrift store. Not bad!
Tomorrow, we’re heading back to Goodwill and The Dollar Tree!

Furniture Markers: An Underrated Invention!
No secret...I love, love, love furniture markers! Here are a few from my collection...
You can get them in most natural wood colors, AND, you can buy them in so many places....even the Dollar Tree! That’s right, the Dollar Tree sells furniture markers, and that’s usually where I go to get them. But you can also find them at Walmart, hardware stores, furniture stores, and the list goes on...
Most furniture markers are probably used for hiding scratches and abrasions, and fixing aesthetic flaws. But they can also be used to sharpen then appearance of a wooden surface. For example, furniture markers can help this table...
I found this table at a thrift store for $9 a few years ago. The top of it was really faded and scratched. I knew that a little work with furniture markers could bring it back to life, so that’s exactly what I did....BUT I’ve had this table for a while and the kids have added some new scratches, so I need redo the top again. Which brings me to my first post for next week...using furniture markers to redo this table! I’ll document the steps as I go...maybe even post a video!
I’ll be making some smaller, just-for-fun posts over the weekend, but we’ll get back to our refurbishing on Monday!
Also, I’m always looking for new blogs to follow....so maybe some of us ‘tumblr newbies’ can help each other out! I love blogs about furniture and refurbishing, but I also love cooking, music and crafts!
Have an awesome weekend!

Thrift Stores, Clearance Bins and other fun places!
Okay, Okay...my idea of fun may seem strange to you.
Or maybe not. After all, you are reading this blog about refurbishing old items.
So where to find those items...
The title of this post says it all!
Honestly I’m not really an official bargain hunter. I don’t have a lot of time for shopping or rambling through flea markets. I shop on an ‘as-needed’ basis....when I need something, I go out and try to find it. And depending on what I need, I could very likely end up somewhere like Goodwill.
For example, my oldest son needed a shelf with pegs...the first place I went was a thrift store in my town. And I found this...
$4.99!! I bought a can of spray paint, $4 (love, love, love spray paint) and it went from light blue to dark brown and then onto the wall. Total cost $8!
My son also needed an office chair...
...so I got this at Goodwill, $15.99! A nice leather chair in perfect condition! This was truly one of my luckier finds since I didn’t have to do anything to it!
And my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE Goodwill find:...my dining room table!
This was an unbelievable find! I needed a bigger dining room table, but had almost nothing to spend on one. I happened to be at Goodwill and walked past a table that was covered with piles of clothes. I accidentally dropped my wallet on the floor, and when I bent down to get it, I noticed the gorgeous legs on this table. I cleared off all the stuff on top and saw a beautiful tabletop in need of some TLC. Then I saw the price tag...only $49! I bought it immediately!
But I had plenty of work to do...lots of spots on the tabletop had to be sanded down by hand, I had to recover the entire table in polyurethane, one of the corners had completely chipped off the left foot, and the legs were covered in children’s stickers. Once I got the table into my garage, I started pulling the stickers off the legs, and that’s when I noticed the “Pottery Barn” sticker...I couldn’t believe my luck at finding a Pottery Barn table at Goodwill for $49.
I spent the next week giving this table a new life....and in an upcoming post I’ll go into detail about that process...but for now, you can see the end result in the photo above!!!
However, thrift stores aren’t the only places to get a good deal. Just look around the clearance bins of your local stores.
A few days ago I needed a large picture frame.....and I found this at Hobby Lobby in the clearance section....
It was in perfect condition (so I’m not even sure why it was in clearance, but who cares!), and the best part...the clearance price!
Before clearance, it was...
Not a bad deal!
Kirkland’s is another place where you can really dig out some good clearance deals...like this entry table...
I found it in the back of the store, marked-down because of a large scratch on the front. Notice any scratch? That’s because I took care of it with a simple furniture marker. More on those tomorrow.....
I guess my point is that almost anything is fixable and you can find a good deal almost anywhere if you keep your eyes open. Many stores have clearance bins near the back and you never know what you might find. It’s like a treasure hunt. That’s part of the fun! See, I told you we’d have fun!
