President Bola Tinubu has dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, and dismissed the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, along with the Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike. Reasons for Dissolution The decision follows allegations that the council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, illegally appointed an unqualified vice chancellor without adhering to due process. The governing council also included members such as Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin. In a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the Federal Government intervened to address growing tensions between the university’s Senate and the governing council, citing the council’s blatant disregard for established procedures in its selection process. Ohieku Muhammed Salami, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State. Engr. Salami was accused of suspending the Vice Chancellor without following the proper protocols. Despite directives from the Federal Ministry of Education to revoke the suspension, Salami reportedly refused and exhibited abusive behavior towards ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary. Federal Government's Position The Federal Government reiterated that university councils are tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of their institutions in line with the laws establishing them. President Tinubu emphasized that his administration is focused on improving education standards in Nigeria and warned against actions that could disrupt university operations. Background The controversy surrounding Nnamdi Azikiwe University, a 33-year-old institution, has raised concerns about governance and accountability in higher education. This decisive move underscores the government’s commitment to addressing irregularities and fostering transparency within the education sector. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, yesterday, charged the police to stop killing peaceful protesters but rather eliminate bandits. He further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to talk to some critical issues in the country and address the protesters. He says, "With the unconfirmed reports putting the casualty at over 40 within two days of managing the EndHunger protest across the country, we have sufficient reasons, backed by reports and video clips, to question their professionalism in our security personnel. This represents nothing but a massacre of citizens.". He added, "Had the security personnel turned the same brutal precision against bandits or other criminals, our country would have been an eldorado. As the lead agency in internal security management, the police bear the burden of this massacre. President Tinubu’s House Set on Fire in Côte d’Ivoire? Truth Emerges According to Ajaero, the case of the Kaduna police command, under Commissioner of Police Audu Ali Dabigi, was even worse. He narrated how a fleeing protester, caught on camera, was appealing to the police not to shoot, when his voice was drowned by gunfire, which killed the protester and injured many others. In contrast to this, Ajaero wrote in commendation of the Edo State Police Command, led by COMPOL Funsho Adegboroye, who he noted had shown quite a different approach in crowd control. Adegboroye related with protesters and calmed them. Ajaero thus insisted, "While it is understandable that the socio-cultural contexts are different between the states, an undisputed fact common to all is that human life is sacred and should never be taken."
