one of the best things about fear and hunger writing is the ending cutscenes and monologue of ending a:

you witness the birth of a new god, a true god, the god of fear and hunger. it is terrifying, beyond understanding, and yet it is true. you fight for pure survival, as does the god, because that is what the god of fear and hunger is the divinity of.

then finally, you are victorious, against all the odds. you stand before this newborn god, having defeated her - it. it shivers from the cold, seems to be in pain. it has transformed before your eyes and all that is left is a cold totem-like appearance. but you can still see the little girl that you accompanied in there. maybe this victory is a way to save her yet.

it isn't.

the god of fear and hunger acknowledges your suffering. you collapse.

you awaken in a dark place, as dark as the abyss you just fought in, yet different, transformed perhaps. you're disoriented.

"Why do you resist?"

a disembodied voice drones in your ears. you're not sure if you can actually hear it or if it is directly speaking into the depths of your mind, where the fear sits.

"The thought must have crossed your mind at some point..."

you begin crawling towards where you think the voice is coming from.

"The thought that you delved too deep."

you've seen so many dreadful things in these dungeons. right now you're not sure if you even have any arms or legs. you don't know how you are still moving.

"The thought that this would be a one-way trip."

yet you persist, you crawl forwards, towards that towering figure you once knew. the totem has no facial expressions. it is unmoving. uncaring?

"So instead of fighting the inevitable, why not embrace it?"

here you lay at the deepest part of the dungeon. you have seen horrors beyond any other human's imagination. yes. you've known that you can't return anymore for a while now.

"Just lay down and rest. There is beauty in this darkness that can be harnessed and used to usher something new."

there are flowers growing around you. you don't know what kind they are but their perfume hangs in the air, sweet and heavy. you close your eyes and the god of fear and hunger bestows her mercy upon you.

You never escaped the dungeons...

Your efforts would go unsung, but your part in the greater scheme of things was vital nevertheless.

You had a vital part in the birth of a new god.

One that is not a mere new god but one that rivals the older ones.

You had the first hand experience of witnessing the coming paradigm shift the world is to go through in the new era.

An era of the newborn god, the god of fear and hunger.

They'll come know this day as the cruel age.

An age where a humanborn god would finally rise after millenias of mankind's struggle as the feeble new gods.

Maybe your fate was an act out of mercy? The last traces of compassion the newborn god shed after her true ascension. Your demise was peaceful after all...
