Today is Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Awareness Day and I was nominated by my dear friend, Andra Kalnins, to post my #4forstageiv. I’ve been living with Stage IV MBC for a little over four (4) years and the cancer in my body JUST mutated yet again so that I have to change my treatment. I literally found out on Monday and met with my doctor yesterday. This experience I’m in the middle of is called progression. The cancer progresses and mutates around everything we have to keep it at bay. For those of us living with #mbc, it only a matter of when those mutations end our lives. #4forstageiv is a Living Beyond Breast Cancer campaign that raises awareness and gives insight into the lived experience of MBC. 4 words to describe my experience are 1. LEGACY; 2. LOVE; 3. LONELINESS; and 4. GRIT #LivingBeyondBreastCancer #stage4needsmore #FundTheResearch #metastaticbreastcancer Legacy — I am building a legacy for my boys, for my extended family and for those who come after. By my words, my actions and my example, I teach others. Love — it is the highest and best goal, to love others. Loneliness — this living with #mbc is a lonely experience. Mitigated, yes, by connection with others but a solitary endeavor regardless. Grit — to keep going every day takes all I have. I nominate Brooke Jones Alicia M Kresack Melinda Feola-Mahar and Christi Avery to share their #4forStageIV for Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. @livingbeyondbc @andrakalnins (at Miami, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-03PXl_z3/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s the people like this who I look up to. ❤️❤️ people like this man who put on a super hero costume to make a child with cancer smile! It’s 5:30 am and I am bawling right now.. #Repost @rickymena (@get_repost) ・・・ Yesterday marked 2 months to the day since my little friend Ruben Contreras passed away at just 7 years old after a one year battle with DIPG (A terminal brain tumor). I met Ruben just one month after his diagnosis which means I was with him his entire journey. The picture on the left was from the second time I met him. He was so intent on coloring his favorite paw patrol character so I could keep it forever. The picture on the right is of me, TODAY, holding that same page he colored (keeping my promise to him). Watching this young man fight was inspiring and so very tough at the same time. DIPG slowly takes away from each child it affects. He literally went from barrel rolling, running and playing around his house with me to no longer being mobile, unable to speak or eat, let alone play. Being beside my little buddy and his family through it all was truly an honor. To know I made him smile through the darkest of times brings me peace. Ruben left behind a mother, a father, a brother and sister who are now left with picking up the pieces to their lives. please consider donating to StBaldRicks (@stbaldricks ) to help fund the research that can stop this DIPG monster along with all other pediatric cancers. The 4% the government gives our children is NOT ENOUGH. Power is with the people to make sure this doesn't happen to YOUR child ✊🏼🎗 I Miss you Ruben.
