Merlin liveblog (partly for @thisisjustmefangirling )

Season 1 Episode 1:

I’m halfway through the first episode, and so far HOW IS MERLIN SO LUCKY ALL THE TIME. (Also, why has everyone been in Doctor Who?!)

I’m coming into this with some background - I think I watched the first 5 episodes a few years ago? But I don’t really remember them well. Apart from being shot in the heart by Katie McGrath’s beautiful outfits. And also, being on tumblr, I have some mutuals who are fans of it, or I’ve seen gifsets when scrolling through some blogs. And I also do know basic Arthuriana, so I can guess in what position some characters are meant to end up. I’ve got a little background knowledge but not that much. Onto the liveblog!

Merlin you’re behaving like a dramatic teen. Which I guess you are, I don’t really know how old you are.

“Look, I’ve told you you’re an ass, I just didn’t realise you were a royal one.” BEST BOY MERLIN but also he can definitely hurt you and holds power maybe don’t challenge your social superiors too much Merlin mmk?

Merlin. Don’t challenge him. You won’t win.

Yeah tbh if I were Arthur I’d probably laugh too.

Merlin he’s been training his whole life and has power and has weapons and has armour WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU CAN WIN YOU AREN’T ALLOWED MAGIC

“Wow. And how long have you been training to be a prat?” See Merlin gets the best lines but that’s dangerous for him.

Slight discrepancy: how does Arthur know Merlin’s name?

Yeah if I were Gaius I’d have that reaction too. Merlin has NO self-preservation instinct.

I like the music. (Also apparently this was filmed at Pierrefonds, so that’s cool!)

YEAH “OH GOD” WHAT DID YOU THINK MERLIN??? That you’d win??!

(Let’s just pause for a moment and appreciate all those historical inaccuracies. They’re painful but also there are so many it almost warms my heart. They’ve COMMITTED to being historically inaccurate. Though I suppose this is fantasy anyway.)

I like both leads’ actors.

And of course he sees Gaius and loses.

“He may be an idiot, but he’s a brave one.” Merlin summarised in one sentence. This boy is DUMB.

“There’s something about you, Merlin. I can’t quite put my finger on it.” See I’m starting to get why this was explained to me as Destiel before Destiel.

“How could you be so foolish?” We are all, at heart, Gaius.

See Merlin’s problem is he wants to be special. Not to be that person but you’re a servant in the (fantasy) Middle Ages you were always going to be a nobody. Being special is very 2000s not so much 1300s.

Aaaand he’s a dramatic emo boy.

Gaius we love you. You’re so kind and honestly the most relatable character. Gaius is great I love him.

OUCH that looks like it hurts.

Oh fantasy medieval painkillers! That’s cool.

It’s not that I don’t like Eve Myles but I specifically chose Merlin to avoid seeing her and John Barrowman all the time. So. I’ve been seeing her pretty much nonstop for a few weeks. I was sort of hoping to catch a break.

Uther is realistic. (As much as a fantasy character from the fictional Middle Ages playing a mythological king from a fictional kingdom can be realistic, but he is!) Both as a father and as a king. I don’t necessarily agree with him, but he’s definitely the most fleshed out character so far.

That voice is creepy and after watching Torchwood CoE it reminds me of the 456.

Merlin come on. Really?

The camera work on this series is………interesting.

Merlin you’re having too much fun with those dice.

Ohhhh is this the dragon Gaius told him about?

OKAY YEAH IT IS DEFINITELY I didn’t expect us to see the dragon so quickly.

So he has a destiny. Great. We already knew that. But I guess this is establishing characters.

Merlin not understanding is me. Yeah I’m confused too don’t worry.

“If anyone wants to kill him, they can go ahead, in fact I’ll lend them a hand.” At least Merlin is coherent, and funny. If extremely dumb and foolish.

“No. No. There must be another Arthur, because this one’s an idiot.” BAHAHA OKAY THAT’S FUNNY

Oh we get the theme music again when Merlin is asking all his questions.

Yeah again Gaius I get you. Also that’s the bedroom of a teenage boy what did you expect, did you want it to be clean? Gaius you’re aiming too high. I have a 15-year-old brother the most I can wish for is for him to open the window once in a while.

One thing I do like is how well-lit the castle is. It’s nice for once.

Oh please tell me he isn’t getting a crush on Morgana. Noooooo please why does every character always have a crush in these shows can my aroace heart be soothed for a while instead of crushed at every occasion

Merlin is a teenage boy with hormones okay. Check.

Okay Merlin just squeaking to imitate Gwen is funny.

Gwen where are you though?

And she arrives! Gwen and Gaius are easily the most relatable people.

OHHHHH I FORGOT ABOUT THE REFLECTION THING NOOOO WHY IS SHE DYING

Oh so Merlin and Arthur have spotted each other- nope that’s just Katie McGrath in an incredible dress that won’t be invented for centuries but since when is accuracy the point of this show. The inaccuracies make it better

Isn’t she your cousin or something Arthur?

Gwen is so sweet! But also. The foreshadowing is starting. “Not that I’d want to marry Arthur.” WELL YOUR NAME IS GUINEVERE. SO I GUESS YOU’RE HEADING THERE ANYWAY GWEN I really hope he improves.

“No, I like much more ordinary men like you.” Gwen is realistic! She doesn’t have ideas above her social station! Finally a character who has some knowledge of where they stand! But also no Gwen please don’t fall in love with Merlin that’s just a bad idea

Gwen deserves better than this world. She’s so sweet and nice and frankly dealing with stuff she isn’t paid for enough. #GiveGwenARaise

Oh phew thank god it’s established she doesn’t like him I don’t think I could have borne it.

Merlin is very much a self-centred emo teenager while Gwen is reasonable and sweet and dealing with so much bullshit I promise Gwen you deserve so much better than dealing with him.

Guys believing the female characters for once would have made a nice change. I guess not, huh?

I love Uther’s voice.

I almost expected her to start singing Memory from Cats but no it makes sense that she’s singing something else actually

I’m 95% sure Eve Myles is dubbed here but also medieval music had lyrics.

OH IT’S A SPELL

The darkening as the spell takes effect is well-done and a touch I wouldn’t have imagined. But also what in the Sleeping Beauty

Merlin I thought you said you’d help anyone trying to kill Arthur? Apparently not, huh?

So he saved Arthur’s life huh. Quite a different reaction to twenty minutes ago. Is this character growth? Or is it him realising how bad it would be if A died? (Or am I just having fun interpreting his joke too literally)

Another incredible chapter, friend! I know you said you weren't satisfied with it, but i also know we are always our own worst critics. We see the details that seem like flaws, holes in the pattern that never line up exactly how you meant them to. It's part of being an artist. And make no mistake, your writing is art. Happy with it or not, your writing holds a place in my heart now. I know you get a bun h of messages from people telling you how much they enjoy it, too. You have breathed life into this story and taken me from casual "oh that's those guys from an fps, right?" to literally watching silent playthroughs of all 3 cod mw. I saw a gifset and was able to guess who was who based on their posture and your portrayal of their characterization.

I know it's hard not to let yourself get in your own head about wanting to get a work in progress just right, i do it all the time, but i don't think you have anything to worry about. You've got this, and i am so excited to see everything that comes next.

I'm so bad about criticizing myself. The pain of being a detail oriented person. Everything has to be just perfect and just right. The way I researched for an hour for stores in the UK that would serve the purpose I need because I know next to nothing about what living in the UK is like. I had someone on Ao3 comment giving suggestions on how to write a Scottish accent and explaining how Scottish people might speak, especially to someone who's not Scottish, etc and it was done so politely and respectfully but now I'm sitting here questioning going back and rewriting all of Soap's dialogue to fix some things.

It's just hard to move past that "everything must be perfect" mindset. I know it's fanfiction and most readers won't even notice if I don't have exactly the distance between two places calculated or some random small town in the middle of bumfuck nowhere mentioned. Most readers aren't going to sit there and look up every fact to make sure it's right. Y'all are here to read an omegaverse fic, I could be pulling stuff out of my ass (which I've done) and most of y'all won't even care or know the difference. You're here to enjoy it not pick it apart like it's a college essay.

Okay I got off the track here, but I appreciate you and your kind words. I forget sometimes that this is just for fun and most people don't care if it's accurate or not. We're all just here to have fun and read about our silly little military babygirls.

It Still Hurts (Peter Parker x Reader)

okay so i saw this gifset here and the quote from the movie [Happy: I thought you had super strength. // Peter: It still hurts. ] and INSPIRATION STRUCK, again i bet this concept has been done before but i cannot hold back i must write about this so here is my sad petey x reader one shot please enjoy 

WARNINGS: angst?, cursing, talk of blood/stitching, crying and generally just a really sad piece i have no reason for this i just couldn’t get the concept out my mind 

Word count: 1725

It was getting late. Very late, even for Peter and you were growing very concerned. He told May that he was going to stay at the Tower with Happy after a simple arms deal bust he was assigned to do with Sam and Bucky out at the shipyard. So of course, the two of you arranged that he’d come in through your fire escape to spend the night instead. To your disbelief though, he was late. 

In general, when the two of you made these kinds of plans he would be in your window at three the latest but it was pushing near four in the morning and you were growing more and more anxious by the second. 

As the clock hit 4:30, Peter’s hand hit your window. 

You opened it up quickly, the dim light of your TV the only thing illuminating your room. He shuffled in, leaning heavily on you, panting and wincing with every rough step towards your bed. 

“What the fuck happened Peter?” You asked, genuinely curious, releasing your hold on his elbow as he sat down on the corner of your bed. His body fell forward as he leaned his forearms onto his knees and allowed his head to swing between his shoulders. 

“I was wearing the old suit. I left the new one in the lab because I coded some new stuff for it and I’ve been putting off this last update. I thought I would be fine since it was an easy mission, plus Wanda came out with us but these guys had some punch to ‘em.” Peter explained as you stood in front of him, slowly moving his head and arms around to check for anything that needed special attention. When you lifted his right arm he winced. 

You nodded, allowing him to continue explaining what went down at the docks. You shuffled through your closet until you found your old med kit, humming softly every now and then to let him know you were still listening. 

The kit had some dust from sitting at the very back of the shelf and not being touched for over a year since Peter had joined forces with the Avengers. With the major suit upgrade and the med team at the tower, he never had to sneak in through your window at night to get patched up anymore, which begged the question that you could no longer hold back. 

“Pete, why didn’t you go back to the tower to get patched up?” You asked. 

“I didn’t want to go to the tower, they would have made me stay there,” he explained. “And I really wanted to see you. I got my ass handed to me, babe. It sucked.” 

You turned on the lamp that sat atop the small table by your bed and sat to Pete’s right, examining the cut just above his right shoulder blade. He was going to need a few stitches. 

“I can see that,” You joked, opening up the kit and prepping your needle. “Take the suit off, I need to clean this up. It’s gonna be at least four stitches.” 

He obliged, hissing as he peeled off the top and letting it drop into his lap. “I always hated stitches.” 

“I know, but it’s gotta happen,” you explained, gently wiping the gash with alcohol and wincing alongside his reactions. “I’m sorry, I know it hurts.” 

“It’s okay. I’m sorry for the blood, for making you do this.” 

You shake your head despite the fact that he has his back to you. “It’s fine,” you reply. “I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t wanna get patched up by the nurse at the tower. She even gives lollipops afterwards.” 

He lets out a sharp chuckle. “Yeah Nurse Katherine’s great at fixing me up, sure, but I really didn’t want to sleep alone tonight.” 

You hum in reply as you prep your needle. “Okay, Pete, I’m gonna start the stitches.” 

Peter nods his head and remembers not to talk while you do these stitches. 

Up until high school, the only stitches you knew were the kind you did to patch up the pits of your t-shirts and to put little flowers in your denim jacket. Then, in your freshman year, your cousin had busted his forearm open at the skatepark and you were the only person in the entire family with a steady hand. That night you learned how to stitch a man up. After you told Peter that story though, he started showing up on your fire escape with cuts, scrapes and bruises galore. 

Although it had been over a year since you’d last done this though, Peter had given you a lot of practice and you were back in your groove very quickly. 

Despite this, you heard soft cries coming from the broad body in front of you. 

“I thought you had super strength,” you attempted to make fun, pulling through your third stitch. 

“It still hurts,” he replied, his voice raspy and low. 

In your heart you knew he wasn’t talking about the stitches. You’ve stitched up a gouge much worse on his calf after he got caught up with a girl who really loved her knives, and he didn’t even complain. That night it was eight stitches and not a peep from him.

You finished the rest of the stitches in silence. After wiping up the rest of the blood smeared on his body, you cleaned up the skin around the suture and placed a large cotton pad atop it, securing that in place and hoping that he didn’t get blood on your bed sheets again. 

You packed away your med pack and grabbed a pair of sweats and a t-shirt from the collection of clothes you’d stolen from Peter in the last year or so that you guys have been together. 

“Thank you,” he said, pulling his suit off and climbing into his sweats. 

His eyes were still red and puffy, the only sounds filling the room were random sniffles and the sound of you sorting out the bed for the two of you to sleep. 

“Are you okay, Pete?” You asked, sitting up on the left side of the bed, the comforter pulled up in your lap. 

He pulled the shirt on over his head and pulled the blanket off your lap and settled himself in between your legs, his back pressed up against you, and pulling your arms around his shoulders. 

Before you could piece words together to react, soft sobs filled the room. 

A minute passed and you pulled him closer to you, pressing soft kisses to the crown of his head and running your thumb up and down his forearm. 

His breathing finally slowed. “I miss him so much.” 

You chewed on the inside of your cheek thinking of something to say. 

You knew well enough he was talking about Tony. Ever since Tony died, Peter’s been off his game. Even with the Stark tech, he was getting pretty hurt at every single mission. He wasn’t sleeping as much and if you managed to catch him in between tasks, you could see the exhaustion in his eyes. 

“I know,” you reply. “I’m sorry, Peter.” 

You can’t think of anything else to do but squeeze him a little tighter. 

“I just-- it still hurts. It’s been months and it still hurts. I miss him. I don’t like the world without Tony Stark. It’s scarier. Even I’m scared all the time. I can’t focus on missions, and that means I’m putting people in danger,” he stops to breathe, pulling your arms a little closer to his chest. “and I’m just so tired of watching good men die at the hands of selfish people.” 

You sit and listen and feel your heart ache at the sight and sound of nothing but a boy in pain, mourning the loss of someone he loved so dearly, and there’s not much else you can do but hold him close, listen and be there for him.

“I know. It’s not fair. There’s nothing fair about it.” 

“I want Tony back.” 

The two of you sit there for a while longer, Pete’s sniffles filling the air. Eventually they stop and he unwraps your arms from around him and the two of you lie down. 

You end up on your back with Peter’s head resting on your chest, slowly breathing in your scent. His arms snake around your middle and you know he’s going to be insistent on holding you like this for the rest of the night, so you try to get comfy. Your fingers tangle in his hair and you rake through them over and over and over again, hoping that he’ll fall asleep soon. 

He doesn’t. 

“Do you think we’ll be okay?” he asked, his voice soft and quiet. 

“I think New York can only be so bad with a guy like Spiderman defending it,” you mutter back, pressing another kiss to his forehead. 

“I don’t think I can fill Mr. Stark’s shoes, y/n.” 

“I think you can. He picked you, Peter.” 

“But he was Iron Man, he was always there when the world needed saving.” 

“I don’t think he would have done what he did if he didn’t think that you could help take care of the world for him.” 

He didn’t respond, but you felt him hold his breath, so you continued. 

“And you’re not alone Pete. He gave you a family with the Avengers and he believed in you.” 

“Yeah.” 

“I believe in you.” 

You smoothed his hair back before tangling your fingers with the bunch at the nape of his neck. The two of you lied awake for nearly another hour, not speaking, just holding each other. 

You held this boy in your arms, desperate to protect him from anymore loss and grief. This boy who had a huge heart and nothing but a yearn to protect the ones around him. This boy who was one of the people responsible for saving the universe. 

And Peter held his number one reason for continuing to fight the good fight. That night, as you held him and his chest filled with an ache only you could soothe, he made a promise to himself that he would protect the world with every bit of him, so long as you were in it.

- 5x09, “your love kept me alive.” when the writers literally pointed out that chair is not even the dark option anymore and that their relationship has the potential to be the MOST light now… and then forced us to endure the light/dark binary with db again for the rest of the season anyway hahahahaha it’s fine we’re fine.

- 5x10, “i’m going to love your baby as much as i love you.” but especially “i love every part of you.” we love growth and honesty.

- 5x13, “she should be happy the first time around.” (this counts as a chair scene), “don’t marry him,” and the most painful headshake in the history of television. 

- 5x22, when they rose from the ashes and healed all my sorrows. and “it’s just us here, you and me.”

- 5x24, “why would i be hurt about something that was in your diary a year ago?” aka the moment she finally fully remembered just how much he Knows her. the comfort on her face in this gif, knowing that he just knew before she even had to say anything, knowing that someone on the planet understands and doesn’t require explanations. such a simple little scene, but i feel so much about this facial expression. also, “i have tried to kill it, to run away from it, but i can’t and i don’t want to anymore.” the validation i still feel when i watch this part of this scene… unparalleled. his emotionally stunted ass ruined it 5 seconds later but this quote is so good that i’m not even sad about it. and, OF COURSE, “this time, i’m all in.” an all-time fave.

s6:

- 6x01, “my bet’s on us.” could cut the sexual tension with! a! knife! also, “the two of us alone in your limo. we’re really tempting fate, you know that?” tfw the sexual chemistry is so much that y’all can fog up the limo windows without even touching.

- 6x03, “i just want someone who can read my mind, is that too much to ask?” DOROTA… SHE’S FEVERISH!!!! also “you read me like tea leaves, chuck bass.” the scene isn’t much, but i love that line so much and i love the classic chair subtext of being able to say absolutely everything just with a look. and lastly, “i’m all yours. mind, body, and scheme.” A WHOLE HUSBAND & WIFE. PILLOW TALK LOVERS. TALKING ABOUT HOW THEIR DAY WAS AND GOSSIPING WITH A SIDE OF SCHEMING AND CUDDLES.

- 6x04, just the entirety of this episode really, their hilarious schemes and hijinks, s1-2 chair but mature and happy and Married™.

- 6x05, “if that’s what you still want. to wait.” i have no words. none at all.

- 6x08, also this entire episode. married married married.

- 6x09, “just have faith in me this one last time.”

- 6x10, really this entire episode, literally everything about it. but i’m gonna list all the moments anyway hehe. bonnie & clyde. ughhhh. “life with you could never be boring.” the parallels WILL ALWAYS KILL MEEEE. “a woman like blair deserves to be married with style, surrounded by friends and family.” remember when blair was like i just wanna be with you i literally don’t need anything else and chuck was like um girl we’re gonna get u SVW, an elie saab dress and a diamond encrusted headband. imagine chuck and dorota making rushed phone calls to put it all together last minute, “NO WE NEED THE BLUE ELIE SAAB AND WE NEED IT NOW.” anyway. “one word, three letters.” i just now realized that she is smiling through this kiss and now i need to go cry. fun fact i listened to let’s get married by bleachers on repeat while i giffed this scene and i think i’ve never been so ruined by chair as i was that day. yes i’ve been planning a cb x let’s get married gifset ever since. “except his wife.” MARRRRIEDDDDD EXCEPT I MEAN IT FOR REAL THIS TIME. and last but absolutely not least, “it was all blair.” i don’t think there’s another image in the history of television that soothes me as much as this one. absolutely everything about it makes me need to scream but also my heart is… so happy because they really made it.

Yeah, I think May would definitely win in a real fight but I think they have so much fun just sparring, they know each other so well and probably sparred plenty of times so they know most of each other's moves and well, it's just really hot to imagine them going at it lol of course AoS couldn't give us that. We even saw Coulson fighting but ofc not with May, that would be giving too much to the shippers.

OF COURSE RIGHT, GOD FORBID THEY GIVE US EVEN JUST A FLICKER OF CONTENTMENT LMAO, WHO CARES ABOUT THE FANS ANYWAY... Sorry for the capslock, but I couldn’t express this any other way than shouting it because I’ll always be annoyed by this! Yeah, they don’t owe us anything, they should be able to tell the story they want without feeling obliged to indulge in the fan-service, bla bla bla, don’t care, I’ll stay pissed off, I’m sure the writers won’t mind, and at this point it’s the level of resigned annoyance that doesn’t ruin my day, so I can stay “fueled” without feeling miserable about it like I was some time ago, when I was more invested (not that I’m not invested in the ship now, but I made peace with the fact that I won’t get the satisfaction - and there is no “compliance” involved here :p - I need from the show so I’m looking for it elsewhere)!

I am convinced it would have been so amazing seeing Phil and Melinda spar because I found adorable (ok, maybe it’s not the best term to describe sparring sessions, but I have big family feels about it because Philindaisy obviously so for me that adjective stands) the sparring scenes Daisy had with both Phil and Melinda so yeah, it was a huge waste of potential, but what’s new when we talk about Philinda’s treatment in the show...

I do see their relationship as a bit unbalanced. There are so many times we saw May showing in words and actions what Coulson means to her, even her freaking robot was out there declaring her love and willing to die for him and the team. I think you're right that Coulson being the director is one of teh reasons for that difference but I think who they are is another.

For Coulson there is Humanity, SHIELD, Daisy and ofc May cares about that too but I mostly see her putting him ahead of pretty much everything, she's so ridiculously loyal to him, even Garret knew that about her, it wasn't follow SHIELD to the grave but Coulson. Watching gifsets of S1B was actually making me ship them less lol, he believed she was Hydra up until she was about to be killed too and then he was a raging dick, to hurt her, and not even an apology after.

Nothing much to add here, I agree with you, let me just underline the awful treatment Phil reserved to Melinda when he thought she was Hydra... All right, I get it, he must have felt overwhelmed discovering such huge betrayal from people in his organization to the point he felt he couldn’t be able to trust anyone, when he was raised in SHIELD with the “trust the system” drill in his head, valid for him until he died and was brought back, at least, not to mention the fact that he was kept in the shadows about this goddamn GH-325 secret by his closest (at least that’s what he thought she was) friend and ally, but just because he seemed to rely on Melinda so much that he decided to choose her as his “right-hand” for the task he accepted, I was flabbergasted that, after the first (comprehensible) moment of shock, he didn’t give her just a glimmer of benefit of the doubt, straight up assumed that she betrayed him and all... So was there nothing at all to be saved from their relationship until that moment that he could just pause just a second and consider that that was Melinda May he was crucifying, and I’m aware that it all happened so fast that there wasn’t a moment to breathe, let alone the chance of having a proper, lenghty conversation with her, but it took him too long, in my humble opinion, to realize that he couldn’t just throw whatever they had out of the window so rashly... Anyway, after the “epiphanic” Audrey episode the writers OBVIOUSLY never addressed the situation again, making us believe that between them it was all good again just by magic... mumble mumble... Thankfully there is fanfiction to fill in the gaps, because there is not a chance in the world I’ll be convinced that that evening, after Melinda brought Phil the infamous pendrive with the video about the TAHITI project, didn’t end up with them spending the night discussing everything and both apologizing AT LENGTH (in my universe there would have been also moments gradually and steadily reaching the R rating, but I would have been perfectly fine watching a scene with just them talking and making a real effort to clear things up and it would have actually made more sense considering canon, but they gave us nothing so whatever, I consider myself free to imagine whatever it pleases me :p )

I remember watching all of that some months ago and thinking he's going to to redeem himself by showing she the same kind of loyalty but then S2 and May was again with that massive devotion of hers, with the alien illness and the "real" SHIELD but what I got was Coulson lying to her repeatedly for no good reason. 3A was weird, I don't mind they had LIs, I actually really liked Andrew but they barely felt like friends imo. When Andrew/Lash was happening *Mack* was the only one who thought that maybe she could use a friend, that was bizarre. 

WHEN HE ASKED HER TO KILL HIM IF THINGS GOT OUT OF CONTROL (and just that, my god, I understand that he trusts only her with everything at this point, not only SHIELD but even his life, but it’s rather a terrible thing to ask anyway), AND SHE INSTEAD HAD ALREADY PLANNED TO SPEND THE REST OF THEIR LIFE IN A GODDAMN CABIN IN A PLACE SHE KNEW HE WANTED TO VISIT, DECIDING TO STAND BY HIS SIDE AND SUPPORT AND HELP HIM UNTIL THE VERY END... AND BY S5 SHE HELD UP TO HER WORD AND DID IT, EVEN IF IN A DIFFERENT PLACE... 

“NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU, THAT’S MY PLAN”  

EXCUSE ME WHILE I GO DIG MYSELF A HOLE IN THE GARDEN AND CURL UP IN THERE FOR THE NEXT DECADE IF THAT ISN’T LOVE I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS??!?!!!!! That sentence and her actions show her love for him more powerfully than any “I love you” voiced out, but ok, let’s carry on...

I could even let the fact that he didn’t tell her about Theta Protocol slide because of all that classified crap and such, even if she called him out brilliantly about him not having the right to know that as well him not being Director anymore (HA, sorry Coulson but take that!) - I’m not really sure it was that a valid reason the fact that he should have told her because Andrew was involved, I mean, idk, they were not even married anymore, I don’t think that officially it should have been her business to know, but surely, as his best friend, Phil maybe should have felt more of a moral obligation to inform her, also because I can’t really recall if Phil started seeing Andrew before he confessed Melinda about his writing impulses, but at some point she knew, so what was the harm on letting her know? Where was the logic in keeping at least that hidden from her? I’ll be damned if I know! 

Anyway, what I seriously would have kicked Phil’s ass for is the fact that he, TWICE (as far as I remember at least) affirmed that he didn’t want to go to Melinda after the whole Andrew/Lash debacle because “she wouldn’t want me to go after her right now” “she’ll talk when she’s ready”... Phil... pal.... buddy... what the fuck???!!! I mean, ok, Melinda would have assured you that she was fine, especially if you approached her in public, but... you know... we know... THE WHOLE WORLD knows she wasn’t, how could she???!!! One fucking sentence, one “you know I’m here if you want to talk or anything” like she said to him, more than once, would have killed the writers to insert it?????!?!?!?! But no, not only he doesn’t reach to her (at least, we don’t see it and it isn’t even implied in the show)but in the meantime he proceedes to go out and have drinks and slEEP WITH ROSALIND AND START A RELATIONSHIP WITH HER WHAT THE HELL KINDA BEHAVIOUR IS THAT?????! His best friend is anguished, tormented and in pain, he should have at least stood by her bunk’s door all night just to reassure her he was there for whatever she needed, or at least stay at base, work, go to sleep, idk, with what spirit you go out and go on a date and everything???!! Why is that, to distract yourself?? Oh yeah, but he’s also working an angle here, yeah all work and duty and no play, eh, Coulson?! MELINDA NEEDED YOUR SUPPORT AND FRIENDSHIP FFS!!!!!!! Damn it, at least find time to show a scene in which he makes an effort to reach for her, then she is free to do anything she wants with his support and if she asks he’ll be considerate enough to leave her alone, but show us he tries, because that’s something I think Coulson would do!!!! Instead he apparently just straight up assumes that she doesn’t want anyone close in that moment so he doesn’t even bother to assure her that if she needs it, he’s there for her... I get it, we all know she closed off after Bahrain and all and she’s the kind of person who tends to keep things for herself, but it doesn’t hurt to at least let her know he’s available if she needs help, especially because she’d hate to bother him knowing well that he has a lot more to think about than just her? Listen, Coulson in certain instances could be a little dense, but I think he’d make such a reasoning, idk? Or am I assuming too much about him? But, as you said, even Mack voices his concerns about leaving her alone, someone who is not particularly close to her, but not Phil 

3B was better but still too little. It's funny but two of my favorites scenes of the show were the one about the boundaries, SO much to unpack there and when called him on it when he said she was too quick to the trigger and Daisy wasn't Andrew, the murder vest was bad enough but damn he still went the extra mile, but if he's going to be a bastard, at least have May fight back because I don't think I could take more of him being a dick and May just taking and getting no apologies like in 2B. 

Oh my god, OH MY GOD yes, that was the peak of the idiocy!! “You’re always so quick to the trigger” JESUS CHRIST PHIL HOW COULD YOU EVEN CONCEIVE TO SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO HER, TO MELINDA, HOW THE FUCK DOES YOUR BRAIN WORK????!!?!?!!? I seriously tend to erase all this stupidity in s3, I know it’s not fair to the show but I’m sorry, I really can’t stand that Phil could say shit like that to Melinda, I can barely recognize it as canon... Maybe it’s me who has created this version of Phil in my head that actually got things wrong about his character, maybe I’m misreading him and don’t really understand him fully (not that I have ever claimed that I do, anyway), because no matter how stressful this moment is for him and no matter how much pressure he is under, I can’t for the life of me accept that he would say those things and behave like that... S1 behaviour I understand even if it still pisses me off a bit but it’s definitely more comprehensible, but these aspects no, just no, no way... The writers kinda saved it with May taking no shit from him (thank god for that, at least) and him apologizing, even if that was still pretty mild according to me, but oh well, better than nothing at all I guess? Let’s try to convince ourselves of that...

S4 was kinda funny to me because they just turned it up to eleven but I appreciate we actually saw him showing love/devotion/loyalty, without S4 I don't think I could ship them as much and since S5 was also disappointing in my I need to believe Coulson loves her as much as she loves him thing there was little Philinda, but still we had May showing in actions and words her love for him and Coulson, well, I believe he loves her and I guess he kissed her, said he didn't want to leave her and invited her to spend a few days together before he died in front of her. Her SL in S6 was about how much she loved him but I knew that already lol and then emotional torture and death. 

Definitely, I seriously don’t know what happened during s4 writing that convinced the writers to suddenly push on the accelerator with their relationship, but I’m actually grateful (see? I can also say good things about them lol ), even if in terms of continuity for their dynamic I’m not sure how much sense it makes unless you take for granted that interactions must have happened in between the seasons, things we obviously weren’t witnesses of... As you pointed out, otherwise it would have been pretty hard to root for them to get closer, because May deserves the world!

It’s kind of ironic in a way to see, despite her being not openly vocal and expressive in her affections, how much more Melinda has said and done to and for Phil compared to him for her - again, as it has been said, he had far more things to worry about than her, whose mission was mainly Phil from the very beginning, so he obviously was more preoccupied to allow himself the luxury of devoting himself to just one person, but still...

S6? What is that? I really have no idea what you’re talking about here... :p

And that's why I appreciate so much how the fics do the work on Couson's part because I don't think I would love the ship as much without it either. And I just find confusing why AoS decided to go for the ship if they didn't care much about committing to their relationship on screen.

Yes! And ah, at this point, especially after S6, I’m so deflated about some choices that were made that I hardly care about trying to understand what goes through the writers’ heads, so again, I’ll just take what I want and run away quickly before they catch me and throw me in the pit of misery again (lol, look how confident I seem, as if I firmly believe that I won’t be affected at all by S7... Mh mh, yeah, sure, stay tuned to find out how much I’ll fail despite me training myself not to get involved with the show like I used to be...)

So the absolute sweetest @blodreina-noumou tagged me to do this positivity meme that is about choosing your five favourite mutuals in the fandom and giving them all the love. I’m all for it, but five??? How am I supposed to leave it at that?

I mean since she was the one who tagged me, I’m perfectly within my right to talk about Steph. She appeared at the time when this fandom was basically drowning in Octavia hate and for some time I felt so lost because it seemed like I was the only person in the 100 fandom not only not hating her guts, but also trying to defend her. I kept posting positivity about Octavia and getting hate in response, but then Steph started reblogging my stuff and I was like, wait... There are people who love her, just like I do. I followed her, and it’s been amazing every since. She’s a very private person and tends to stay out of any fandom brawls, but she’s very good at just... being there for people, you know? So many times I would be having one of those moment when I just hated my life, and I’d post something about it not expecting anyone to read or care, and Steph would suddenly come out and say something that, if not necessarily fixing things, pushes me along on the path. I think Mira will always take a special place in my heart because she was one of the very first people I spoke to in this fandom. I believe I had about 90 followers at the time, and I messaged her to tell her that her tags were hilarious because she would always not only tag them purposefully to systematise content, but also add her reactions and it made things so much better. Mira is also one of those people who will see or hear you say some small detail about yourself once and remember it, and then randomly bring it up in the conversation. She just cares about people and remembers. She’s one of the most unassuming people I know because she will give you advice on the things that bother you and won’t push for anything more than you’re prepared to give in that moment. And sometimes that’s the best we can do for others. Just be there for them. And I honestly think no one produces more content for our fandom (mainly Bellarke as well) than Mira does, for which, sweetie, thank you so much because there were so many moments when I just thought there was no more hope for Bellarke, but then I’d see one of your gifsets and feel better. Really, thank you, I’m so happy to know you!

The story behind why Emily followed me is funny. Apparently, she was so frustrated with Zaven because she just wasn’t feeling it and it seemed to her like literally no one else was shipping Murven, so she purposefully searched in the anti zaven tag and found me. So that’s when she followed me. And I remember I followed her because she had this cute icon from Anne With an E, and I’d been reading her fics for like two years before that, but it never clicked that she was the person writing them hahah.

Emily is an amazing person. She’s so warm and sweet and understanding, and she’s one of those people who will go out of their way to do something if you ask them to. Her fanfics basically got me through the hiatus. I always joke with her that she has this talent to make you feel second hand embarrassment like no one else does, and I stand by those words because she’s just that talented. She can portray a situation in a way that you feel so involved you want to die of embarrassment when the character is embarrassed, and it’s a beautiful thing! Please go check out her fics, I promise you, you will not regret it. My absolute favourite of all time (Emily is probably sick of hearing about it by now lmao) is Smoke Break, which, do yourself a favour and go read right now please!!

Luna is someone about whom I should talk a lot more because she’s become such a vital part of my life and my fandom experience that it’s crazy. Luna is someone who never gives up on people, for better or for worse. She’s probably one of the most loyal people I know, and if there’s something I respect and love and appreciate, it’s loyalty. She helped me get through one of the toughest moments in my life by being completely calm while I was panicking and having pretty much a mental breakdown, giving me invaluable advice and just being there for me. Thank you so much for that, sweetie, I will never forget it.

She is also such a positive person. She probably won’t admit this to save her life, but she has so much love and hope for this world and people in general. She’s open to everyone, absolutely loving and sweet and understanding.

what happened with the magicians? i was considering watching the show based on some gifsets, but i think the finale or whatever made fans mad? but idk what went down. would it still be worth it to watch the series? spoilers very much welcomed lol

alright, forgive me a moment for doing a classic “recipe blogger moment” and answering a question you didn’t ask before taking it back around to the actual point. spoilers for both the book and the show The Magicians follow

so i loved the magicians series. i liked the books but only sort of, because I found Quentin, the main character, to be an entirely unlikable protagonist. he was a misogynist, he was selfish, he made everything about himself, and all of this was handwaved away because he was depressed, which, in a white dude, is a boring reason to be an asshole. (i’m sure some people will take offense at my characterization of him this way, but honestly, Q is the goddamn worst, I only even marginally started liking him in the third book where he was much older and everyone made fun of him constantly for being a shit). to be fair, I didn’t really like that many of the characters in the books, because they’re all assholes. now, I’m a big fan of the secret history, I can be convinced to like a bunch of absolutely shitheads, but this just wasn’t it for me, chief.

now, jason ralph, who plays Q in the series, took this absolute dickhead of a character and gave him a lot of life. he took this dude who was a miserable pain in the ass and made him relatable.  he fleshed out a lot of the mental illness that the book just sort of implied (this is not really a failing of the book, it’s just a different medium). the show took a lot of the incidental queerness and made it actual text (in the book, Q has a threesome with his two best friends, Margo and Eliot, but it’s really only used for more angst with his girlfriend Alice, who walks in on them in the morning, and then the whole thing is never touched on again). in the series, this relationship with Q and Eliot is very much expanded on, they are affectionate with each other, they are incredibly close, they share a few kisses even as Eliot gets married and Q is still doing whatever the hell is happening with Alice. season three gives us the episode “a life in a day” where, to bring back magic, Eliot and Q live out FIFTY YEARS together, dedicating their lives to this quest, and each other. They grow old together, they have children, etc, and then they have to return to their regular lives.

Now welcome to this season. There’s a lot of good stuff happening in the season, until the last threeish episodes where the writers stomp all over a lot of that, giving bad outs to season long plot lines, and then there’s this. So in the fourth or fifth ep of the season, “escape from the happy place,” it’s revealed that Eliot’s most shameful moment is when Quentin asked if they could try to make a relationship work and Eliot turned him down because he was afraid, not because he wasn’t in love with Q. Here it is!!! canonical queer protagonist!!! canonically queer mentally ill protagonist!!!!! they love each other!!! wow!!! they’re really giving us this??? except then they don’t, because despite the fact that Quentin has spent this WHOLE SEASON fighting to get Eliot back (that’s a whole other thing), in the final episodes Quentin gets back together with Alice and then sacrifices his life for her, not acknowledging Eliot being his literal canonical soulmate or any of the work Q put into that for the entire fucking seasons. and then, oh yeah, they also have to acknowledge - was this really a sacrifice for the greater good, or Q SUCCEEDING IN FINALLY KILLING HIMSELF???? COOL!!!!!!

anyway, I hated Sera Gamble before it was cool, back when she was doing her damndest to run supernatural into the ground in 2011, good to see she’s still fucking everything up. there was a lot of joy in the show for me, in fact, it was one of the only shows I actually even bothered still watching, and I don’t know that I’ll return to it again in the new season. Maybe just pretend it was canceled after season three?

i’m so glad you sent this ask because HERE’S WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY. talk about death below, sorry, please tread carefully! also apologies if the cut doesn’t show on mobile, this is… long. rip.

so sott is pretty much about death (harry has #confirmed as much), and i think that the music video focuses on death by suicide specifically (that’s My Interpretation, and i’ll explain my idea for this mv according to this reading). the mv operates on two pretty straightforward* metaphors: flying as being free (and flying = killing yourself; freeing yourself from the burden of living “down below” on earth, etc.), and then you have dramatic imagery of nature as a direct representation of A Man’s Anguish (aka 10000% European Romanticism. death was a big topic in Romanticism too obvs.) like the landscape is absolutely a character in this mv, too.

(*i want to stress that the idea for the mv to be simple isn’t a bad thing. i would actually make the same decision. i don’t want an elaborate mv, i want my audience to focus on the lyrics and to take them on an Emotional Journey. i want them to ANGST TO THIS.)

a music video is no movie (be it a short or full feature), but the best mvs are stories nonetheless. and with every story it’s good to have some kind of a beginning, the middle, and then the ending. like even simple mvs that feature, idk, people at a party usually have a noticeable narrative structure, too. for example: a girl arrives at a party, a boy notices the girl, tries to hit on her, they get together at the end or not. and, FUN FACT, even most of arthouse films follow the most basic pattern of constructing a narration in a film (except where a ~regular movie would explicitly show on screen something like a character death to milk the shock factor, an arthouse film might have that death happen offscreen and not be acknowledged by other characters for a while, but the death would still happen at the same minute mark as in a ~normal movie; just a simple example), but that’s a digression for another day, maybe.

sott is a long ass song that takes it sweet time to reach its conclusion (aka the bridge + final, most dramatic chorus). meanwhile in the mv, they have harry flying with the first chorus at the 1:20 mark, which leaves the remaining 4 min 20 sec with the “will he, won’t he? (kill himself)” question already answered (yes, he will). the audience already knows the ending. meanwhile the song continues to build up and build up in the background, but the viewers have already seen the big climax – he’s already been sent flying, doesn’t matter that the video cuts back to him back on the ground after that. the audience keeps listening to the song and still waits for something Big to happen because /the music/ urges them to, but they’re left hanging at the visual level.

so what you gotta do is prolong the inevitable + control the pacing. yes, it’s that simple. what i’d do personally is play with the idea of physical movement as a representation of spiritual struggle more? because, again, we don’t have to do anything complicated here. so i’d begin the mv with harry completely immobile, just lying on the ground. wide shots of nature in the beginning, have camera take a moment to find Very Small Harry Among the Big Hills and Tall Grass, etc. then some close ups of his limbs lying completely still before i even have my audience take a first look at his face. and then i’d basically make the “walking” part of the mv longer – i’d even have harry pretend to learn how to walk at first. i’d have him sit on the ground once or twice along the way, because maybe he wants to give up right there and then? then he walks some more. now’s your time to cut to those beautiful shots of nature, too. like that’s your time to show that as a director – because he’s maybe, maybe not about to give up on all of that beauty. you gotta show what exactly he’s leaving behind.

and then you have the moment from the gifset i reblogged earlier – for me it’s one of the two Money Shots™ of this mv, tbh. like it moves me so much, because it feels like a direct, 1:1 translation of that specific moment of struggle where a person is considering: am i killing myself now, am i waiting a while longer? it’s a beautiful shot, his feet touch the ground, then they don’t, and then he’s back at the ground again. he doesn’t do it yet, and the mystery is back, the audience is still left wondering. i’d do that once or twice before he’s finally sent flying for real.

i’d have him flying after the bridge! (and you can do some big, dramatic fall - maybe he’s walked to the edge of a cliff and you except him to jump and fall into the water, but boom, he TAKES OFF instead) aka around the 4:45 mark, and then you still have a FULL minute to play with footage of him under the sky. and i’d focus SOLELY on that for the remaining part of the mv, i wouldn’t need my filler footage of trees or waterfalls anymore. i’d also milk the moment that happens around 5:02 more, have it be 2-3 seconds longer maybe. because that’s my second Money Shot™ of this mv. like not to sound like a cheesy old lady, but that shit is breathtaking, bro. you can’t even see his full face at first, and then he’s looking up with tears in his eyes, but looking so fucking happy? IT WORKS. IT WORKS SO WELL. LIKE GREAT JOB, STYLES, THIS SMALL MOMENT STILL HAS ME MORE SHOOK THAN HIS WHOLE PERFORMANCE IN DUNKIRK TBH. like i get emo deadass everytime i see it.

this is a good moment to mention the sun setting in the background at the end. i love it, i’d’ve played with that imagery of a day ending/light changing in the background more, actually. i love that the day is ending (death, End of Things, etc., another simple but effective metaphor), but he’s so fucking HAPPY. he’s embraced death, he’s found solace in it. he’s leaving his pain behind/on the ground.

i’d COMPLETELY delete that footage of him running across the water, god, it RUINS THE MOOD COMPLETELY. DOESN’T FIT AT ALL. would’ve left the shot of him hovering above the water, maybe, but i’d have the water be still. like have that one bit filmed in a studio or something, i don’t care, i don’t need those helicopter waves? they kind of break the spell a bit.

and…… that’s basically it, i guess? lmao. like i said, i do like the idea behind the mv, i’d just have made it more (imho, at least) effective. like, punch that audience emotionally. yeah, he is dying. have people wait for it, so they can be properly moved when it finally happens. the end.

*crackles knuckles* Little did you know I am the master of beginning things and never finishing them in a timely manner... In no real order, here we go:

The Girl Who Struck Lightning (working title, 39,509w)- original fiction, fantasy - my current babby. Loosely originally inspired by the Surana da:o origin story, it follows a feral mage girl, who can only use her powers to destroy, as she has to understand and master her powers so she can reunite with the girl whom she loves and has sworn to protect. Bonus! Favorite line thus far: You were so afraid of what I'd become that you tried to turn me against everything that I am. Well, here I am, just as I am. And I am Everything, everything that you feared: Uncontrollable, uncontainable, wholly and entirely wild.

An Affair of the Heart (working title because holy shit gayest title ever first place blue ribbon winner, 5,739w) - fanfiction, hurt/comfort - essentially just a one-shot (???) between Act II and Act III in which Hawke drinks too much and Fenris takes it upon himself to have to escort her home. He knows she only drinks to inebriation when something is really, really bothering her, and by the Maker, this is the worst he's ever seen her get. As he helps her home, they have a tryst from their separation and they help each other find home along the way. Bonus! Scene setting: The Hanged Man was as busy as it should be on a Saturday night. Its usual stench of vomit, piss, and ale flirted with the smell of hot body odor and the belches of the throngs of patrons inside. The clamor of shouts, hoots, and hollers made it difficult to carry on any conversation, but if you played your cards right, a game of Wicked Grace needed no background noise. Conversation was for the losers. Fenris knew this well. Very well. It’d been about half a day since Hawke’s group had returned from their latest expedition at the Wounded Coast. Big gang of bandits, big group from the guard—one giant clusterfuck of a battle. They’d made it out relatively unharmed, along with the guardsmen, less than helpful as they were. The bandits, of course, were not so lucky, but that’s what happened to those who got between Hawke and her desired result. Still feeling the rush of a flawless victory, it didn’t need to be said where you could find the group this evening. Fenris had joined Varric, Donnic, and a few of the other regulars for a few rounds—cards and drinks. He’d heard that Hawke would be spending the evening with Isabela and Merrill “playing bar kitten”… whatever that meant.

[A Follow up One-Shot to An Affair of the Heart] (659w) - fanfiction, hurt/comfort/romance? - the morning after, they have to come to terms with what happened between them, and what it means... if Hawke remembers any of it. Bonus! Favorite part to write: When he was with her, he felt glimmer of hope, of happiness, of rightness in the world—none of these had a place in the mind of a slave, and so his body rejected it like venom. Physical pain, rewiring of the pathways in his mind, taking him down roads to memories he hadn’t known existed, to have a chance at knowing the boy before the wolf… that there even was one… and then to have it ripped out of his head, gone without a trace… And all for what? What was the point of fighting against the numbness if all it brought was misery above all else? Maker, did he ever want to love her, but love is not for the weak.

Friction (1,579w) - fanfiction, flirtations, a companion piece to this lovely piece of artwork that asked for a story behind it - click the link. The picture... speaks for itself. Bonus! Favorite piece of dialogue thus far: “Oh, the only one who cares about that is mother,” she’d said of Fenris' concern of an elf making nighttime visits to her Hightown manor. “But then I remind her that she ran away to Fereldan with an apostate mage as a pregnant teenager, so really there’s nothing more to say that hasn’t already been said.”

Trigger Stacked - fanfiction, psychological study? - a take on what the heck happened leading up to the first FenHawke romance scene that tries to explain why it played out how it did, dealing with the repercussions of integrating back into mainstream society (kinda?) after Fenris' life as a slave. No bonus for this. I'm currently mad at it and it is in the Shame Folder.

That Man, Our Lady of Liberty (1,728w) - original fiction, short story - a piece I've been trying to put together for like a year now. I'm actually really fond of it, but I just... can't seem to tie it all together. It explores the different, assumed stories and personalities of someone from an outsider's perspective. ...Wow, that sounds like a terrible description. Let me just give an excerpt instead: He’s there, every day, our Lady of Liberty. Sometimes he waves to you as you drive by, sometimes he only nods. Sometimes he looks like he’s out there having the time of his life. For a small fraction of a second, you almost envy him on those days, but then you keep on driving and you remember why you don’t. No one you know knows who he is, by name or by mention. Most people you know might not even see him. Well, they see him, but he just kind of blends in with the scenery, like a ridiculously lanky offspring of the weeds that grow between the cracks in the sidewalk and the people that trod past them day after day. Rooted in the crumbling cement, he sways in the wind, then bobs his head in time with the music coursing through his earbuds. When you drive by and see him nodding, you like to imagine that these aren’t the prime years of his life. He’s seen better days, and he’s only doing this to hold him over until something better comes along. There’s nothing wrong with that. At least he’s trying.

Perfection (~44,695w) - original fiction, realistic fiction - my burnout piece. A story that's more about the characters than the story that ties them all together--god, do I ever love the characters in this. Basically, it's the story of the recovery of a family after cancer tears them apart and reveals their worst imperfections, a story about people moving forward each in their own direction. Bonus! Fun fact: each main character's part is narrated in a different POV: Lucian's is first person past, Seraphina's is second person present, and Dr. Young's is third person past. Also I've been working on it since 2007, fml.

HERE BE DRAGONS (working title, ~4,141w) - original fiction, fantasy - a religious warrior earns the respect of the king and goes on a journey to rescue her best friend, the princess, from the clutches of the almighty dragon god she worships... while accompanied by the princess's younger, pain-in-the-ass brother.

Spirit (working title, 3,191w) - original fiction, fantasy-ish? - the story of a little boy accompanied by a guardian spirit whom he wants to turn human.

The Quiet Sunrises - original stage play, realistic fiction - a happenstance meeting between two couples, both biking across the country, changes everything and helps them find why they set out in the first place. Technically, this is a finished stage play, but I don't think anyone would want to pick it up because it still needs a lot of work and revision to make it palatable by a lot of audiences. Bonus! Theme: I dunno what you’ve been told, but here is what I know: It doesn’t matter where you’ve been, It matters where you go. Now I dunno much about going, Right here is fine for me. But still some say I should head out To see what I can see.

Wow, I didn’t think I’d actually make it to ten AND STILL HAVE SOME THAT I LEFT OUT. I don’t know whether to be proud or ashamed...

#16, Surah 3

THE QURAN READ-ALONG, DAY 16

Surah three is better than surah two in one respect, which is that we’ll be over 15% of the way done with it after only this, the second update.

Last time, we started the section with an entry on the kuffar hell counter. I regret to inform all disbelievers that this is also the case today.

Lo! religion with Allah (is) the Surrender (to His Will and Guidance). Those who (formerly) received the Scripture differed only after knowledge came unto them, through transgression among themselves. Whoso disbelieveth the revelations of Allah (will find that) lo! Allah is swift at reckoning.

That’s 3:19. And it’s bad! (Again, the word surrender up there is literally “Islam”.) The people he’s complaining about regarding those who “received the Scripture” and went astray later are Jews and Christians, technically, but all these rants are specifically about Ze Jews. The last sentence could be construed as Allah simply punishing these people in this lifetime... but it’s so broad (directed at everyone who disbelieves) that I have no choice but to put it down as a kuffar hell counter (1) hit.

The next ayah is Allah instructing Mohammed to spread Islam, which is neutral. But Allah has another instruction in 3:21:

Lo! those who disbelieve the revelations of Allah, and slay the prophets wrongfully, and slay those of mankind who enjoin equity: promise them a painful doom.

Those who “slay the prophets” are Jews, as established in 2:61, though again it’s completely unclear what prophets are being referred to here. Bad for the false accusations, connecting people to the “crimes” of their ancestors, and kuffar hell counter: 2!

The aforementioned disbelievers are further chastised in the following ayat. Their “works have failed in the world and the Hereafter”. They read their holy book but refuse to abide by its rules and proscribed punishments because they wrongly believe that hell is a temporary thing (instead of, you know, The Eternal Doom) and are thus not sufficiently afraid of it.

This is a topic that Mohammed rants about a lot: the Jewish rabbinical traditions. Ideas found in the Talmud and similar texts, but not in the Bible itself. One of those ideas is this conception of at least some people enduring only temporary punishment in Gehinnom (the Hebrew version of the Quran’s jahannam, hell). The Babylonian Talmud gives a period of twelve months. Since this is not stated in the Torah itself, Mohammed accused the Jews of lying about Allah and making up false religious texts.

All pretty bad. They’ll learn the error of their ways on the Day of Judgement, of course (this one is neutral because it only implies they’re going to The Fire forever).

Anyway, 3:26-27 are more “Allah is god” neutral ayat. Allah does what he wills and makes the night and day etc.

Back to the disbelievers. The following ayah has caused some problems throughout the modern Muslim world. 3:28:

Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security.

The word “friends” here is auliya, plural of the word wali. As you can see from the translations, some people attempt to make this horribly discriminatory ayah more palatable by translating it as “allies” or “helpers” instead (though it would be bad in any case, and some of the early caliphs were criticized simply for having non-Muslim advisors). Wali has an alternate definition meaning guardian or protector, but that is not how it is being used in the ayah above. Aside from friendship/alliance or guardianship, the term auliya is also sometimes used to refer to Muslim (Sufi) “saints”. 

Tafsir authors mostly interpreted auliya in this ayah as meaning “friends”, ie someone you have a close relationship with, but I will leave it to your judgement which translation makes the most sense. Regardless: don’t be a wali of disbelievers unless you’re just using them to cover your own ass.

Moving on: Allah knows everything and judges everyone so beware. Follow Mohammed if you want Allah to love you. Exploitative, but neutral.

3:32 smacks us right back into bad territory with “Allah loveth not the disbelievers”. Now seems like a good time to mention that there’s a hugely popular gifset that says something to the effect of “the Quran mentions jihad Y times but love X times”. Most of those “love” (yuhibbu, love/like) mentions are in this form, with Allah loving or not loving various people. (And the jihad part ignores the fact that the word qital is used far more often for warfare but HEY that is a topic for another day.)

Now let’s talk about the title of the surah for a minute. Recall that Mohammed got his Biblical tales mixed up and this surah is named after Imran, named the father of Mary (not Miriam). 3:33 tells us that Allah preferred Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Imran’s family (all one family, descended from each other) above everyone else.

Keep that in mind, because...

NEXT TIME: Mohammed attempts to re-tell the story of the Virgin Mary. It’s gonna be a fun time.
