As my Gawain primarily follows the Wace/Roman de Brut canon of the Arthuriana, he's a lot less of a no thoughts head empty loyal golden retriever (affectionate) than the Fate Gawain. And, though he may happily adopt any version of his' siblings (except mordred), in his canon he really only had Mordred for a brother. Though some liberties were taken to still include Gareth as sister, however Wace Gareth is simply a tomboyish princess who lives in Camelot as her mother, Anna, sent her to Arthur so he could deal with the troubles of finding her a husband.

So basically even if Gawain is absurdly loyal to Arthur (Wace) and still a hopeless cook, he's far sharper than he likes to let on.

...And he died in battle against Mordred, when his treacherous brother betrayed Arthur and set himself against his return.
