The Northern Goshawk is a medium-large raptor and is often considered a "true hawk". It has short, broad wings and a long rudderlike tail which gives it superb aerial agility. Falconers have trained goshawks for more than 2,000 years. They are secretive birds and are typically found in large tracts of forest. I spotted this Goshawk on an early morning trip to the Fullerton Arboretum. It was sitting on a branch over a little stream. I had my zoom lens and moved closer and it didn’t move. “Please do not climb on trees.”🌳 So, there are multiple paths at the @fullertonarboretum 🌿🍃 ... and on this particular day, my granddaughters, my son and I, entered the arboretum from the outskirts. 🌲 We came back through the middle and saw this beautiful tree. The girls were drawn to it and began climbing. 🌳 After a few minutes, a family approached the tree from the “main” trail. We heard the mom say, “Those kids are climbing on the trees when they’re not supposed to. They don’t care.”🙄 My son and I thought, “How judgy‼️ Like it’s her business!?!”🙄 (Notice how we were judging the mom?) So the girls finished climbing on the tree 🌳 and we continued down the “main” path...which is when we saw the sign 💥 “Please do not climb the tree.” 💥🙄🤭😧 We never saw the sign‼️ But the mom apparently thought we had...and disregarded it. 😒 But we didn’t. 💥 But at the same time...WE had assumed the mom just didn’t think we should be climbing on 🌳🌳trees! 😕 So we were judging her too‼️ Do you see it? Neither party had the full story, we made assumptions about one another. 😧🤭😧 Where in YOUR life are YOU making assumptions about people...about what you “think” you know? 😳 Give it some more thought. 2022 arrived on the heels of a solo show and the burn out that often comes with it. I retreat into nature when I need recharging and decided that was where my studio focus needed to be this spring. When much of the country is still in winter hibernation, Southern California is in blooming abundance and for me nothing shows this quite as much as our citrus trees. The Fullerton Arboretum has a lovely grove that inspired this painting, which is less of a tree, but more of a portrait of a very particular tree. I have visited it many times over the past five months, watching it shift from spring to summer. My process was a little different on this project. Rather than multiple composition sketches and photo references, I dived right into the canvas, working my way from branch and cluster and leaf to leaf, playing with light and color. It requires a few more weeks before I can varnish it, which will really make the color pop, but I couldn't wait to share. So here is "Like Poetry". 🌺 had a lovely #earthday surrounded by gorgeous, natural beauties at the @fullertonarboretum ! Heard about the expo through @hibiscuswhisperer & had to check it out. Couldn't get enough of the lush, rich colors. Just breathtaking! 🌺 We had an awesome time wandering, learning, smelling, shopping! Malaea and I got some new succulents for our rooms, Makoa got a rainbow pinwheel & seeds for some butterfly-friendly flowers. 🦋 We saw some art, enjoyed the live cello + violin music, endless friendly faces at each booth ready to share their knowledge, sipped on hibiscus lemon tea...so much to peacefully enjoy! 💙🌎 #fullertonarboretum #hibiscus #socalhibiscussociety #epiphillum #orchidcacti #malaealeanna #makoakai_ (at Fullerton Arboretum)

We attempted to walk through a recreated Southern California chaparral garden, even though we hike through the real thing all the time. Unfortunately, the hill proved to be too steep for the rocker-sole boot on my broken foot. I carefully turned around, and we walked through a flat Channel Island garden instead, with many huge, brightly colored St. Catherine’s spray flowers (pic 8).

There’s a nice Victorian house on the grounds of the Fullerton Arboretum.I think it was built for a past Cal State Fullerton president.

By this time I was starting to get really tired. Since the picnic tables were outside of the Arboretum, we were trying to exhaust me before we headed toward them, which we were...and I was.

It was therefore gratifying when, as we headed toward the entrance, a man called to me to say, “That was some good effort you put out there today!” He was referring to my attempts to hike in my rocker-sole boot, which is extremely difficult and the reason I was so tired. I thanked him, and he joked about how comfortable those boots are, claiming to have wanted to get two of them.

I laughed and said, “Not so much!”
