My biggest pet peeve is when people's response to the openly aggressive Fuku-chan push of 2020-2022 is that Takahasystem was a thing. Yes, Upfront was very aggressive about pushing Ai but Ai was very popular with the general public from the moment she joined. That is why they started to revolve the group around her. Famous musicians, actors and actresses were openly declaring themselves as Ai fans as early as 2002 when she was still a newbie. One of them even includes Eririn's famous musician husband(!!!), he was on TV in 2002-2003 talking about how he was an Ai wota. In the mid to later 2000s Ai was beating Nacchi, Gomaki and other famous Japanese female actresses and musiciains in polls where they asked young men which female celebrity they liked. Her 2006 photobook "19" was the best-selling celebrity photobook of the year. In 2014 Tsunku said he wanted to push Reina and Sayu as centers to bring a sense of change in 2005 but Upfront shot him down and made him keep Ai as a main vocal. Why? Probably because she was the only member of 5-6th gen that the general public cared about at the time.
So while Ai had a lot of people who complained and complained and complained about her she never had real haters the way Fuku-chan did because wota understood her significance in drawing eyes to the group in the mid-2000s. It was aggressive favoritism on Upfront's part but the favoritism made sense on a marketing level. The push with Fuku-chan was because Fuku-chan was the most popular with the wota, sure, but she had absolutely zero general public appeal and was an absolute nobody to the general public even after being a front girl for a decade and center for the last few years of her tenure. It's not the same and I would even go as far as calling the continuous Fuku-push a marketing failure on Upfront's end.

I wasn't an Fuku-chan anti but whenever I see a photo of her again I just get so exhausted. It is refreshing to look at '24. She wasn't a bad idol. She was just at the front and later in the center for too too long.
