FUCK! I FINALLY FINISHED IT! (Click on image for better quality)

I finished both Succession and Fukigen na Mononokean the same day, last Monday and it wasn’t the Shakespearean tragedy that got me! It was the cute manga about demons and friendship!!! Of course.

Anyways, due to the ending I felt the insatiable urge to “draw or paint something related to this or I’LL DIE!!” and I’d saved this cover because since I first saw it I fell in love with it and NEEDED to color it. This and chapter 59 are my favorites for many reasons, such as: Ashiya and Abeno, Ashiya in his element, Abeno feeling conflicted, Ashiya’s mom and Fuzzy, they’re such good chapters I swear

Ashiya wakes up thinking about what he discussed with Abeno, that he killed Sasa with Influence and Sakae is somehow residing within him.

He tells Fuzzy that the Executive was right that he was dangerous and wonders what he should do. He even wonders what he should tell his mother if he ends up getting imprisoned in White Sand Prison lol (”Should I tell her I’m going on study abroad? A journey to find myself..?”)

Abeno suddenly says the three officials don’t know about this incident yet, because he hasn’t told them. But if the Executive should catch wind of it, that’ll be the end of it so Ashiya should be cautious.

But Ashiya thinks about what happened last time Abeno tried to protect him, asking Abeno if he’s thought about what’ll happen to himself. Ashiya says if they end up finding out, all the trust that Abeno’s built up as the Mononokean’s master will be lost in an instant, and Ashiya thinks he can’t let Abeno protect him like this and yells that they should go tell the Legislator immediately, because the Legislator will look at the situation neutrally since he doesn’t hate humans, and Ashiya will follow any order the Legislator makes.

Ashiya’s mom knocks on the door with breakfast then, cheerfully pushing Abeno to eat lots. When he’s leaving, Ashiya notices his mom staring after Abeno, and she says he reminds her of Sakae, so she might have gotten excited because it was almost like he came back.

Inside, Ashiya thinks about the fact that his mother is still waiting for Sakae to come back, and that he can’t keep quiet about the fact that he’s dead forever either.

The next moment, Abeno opens his door again and says that the Legislator is calling for them. Ashiya asks nervously if they’ve been found out, Abeno replies probably...

The Legislator says the fact that Ashiya killed a yokai with Influence............. is not something he expected to hear, and casually says he’s surprised, leaving Ashiya and Abeno dumbfounded that they hadn’t actually been found out, but now they most certainly are. But he understands that with the Executive’s prior actions and disposition, they must have been wary of telling anyone so he doesn’t blame them for how they acted. The Legislator says he wishes they had told him earlier though, and says he’ll let them off with a scolding to which they apologize. But the real reason he came here was to tell them the three officials will be gathering at the Birdcage, and so it’s a good opportunity to make their case there. He tells them it’s a rule to go to the Birdcage with them and to leave their plans open on the day of.

On the day of the meeting, at Newt Lake, the Justice greets them, and while Ashiya is still hesitant about setting foot outside the Mononokean the Justice tells him it’s fine because he’s fulfilling the condition of being accompanied by the Justice. They get on the Justice Express and end up stopping by a town first, where the Legislator says they’re going to buy the Executive’s favorite food, the equivalent of the Mundane World’s bean daifuku. They look around and the Legislator ends up attracting attention for being there... while the Justice doesn’t allow Ashiya to get off and when attention find them too, Ashiya ends up being mistaken for the Justice......

They finally reach the Birdcage, and the Executive greets them, clearly displeased despite their peace offering of food, and asks why Ashiya is there.

Abeno gets up to explain, but Ashiya stops him, asking if he can explain since the issue is with himself. Abeno protests that Ashiya doesn’t remember what happened, but the Legislator tells Ashiya to go ahead, nodding for Abeno to stand down, to which Abeno reluctantly obeys.

“I’m sure... that if I let Abeno-san explain... Even if he doesn’t mean to, to the Executive, it’ll look like Abeno-san was protecting me.”

Ashiya thinks that he doesn’t want the target of Executive’s anger to go through him and be aimed at Abeno, and that he doesn’t want Abeno to feel responsible about his father. He decides that he’s the only one who should burden the weight of Sakae’s crimes.

“As an employee of the Mononokean, I came to the Underworld again to make a report about something. The other day... I killed a yokai named Sasa using Influence.”

The look of surprise on Abeno’s face when Ashiya asked if he thought about his own position makes me think that... he didn’t? Not really? It’s almost like it’s been all about Ashiya and nothing, or at least not enough about himself and I’m so _(:3 He’s good with it comes to protecting others like Ashiya and yokai but it’s like he himself is an exception.... also it looks like he was sleeping in seiza, this kid >>

ASHIYA’S MOM.... ow....... the way she still dotes on Abeno wwwww he’s really no match for her... she lists off all these drinks for Abeno and Abeno can only say “yes...” while Ashiya frantically tells his mom tea is fine hahahaha

This is... definitely an Ashiya we wouldn’t have seen at the beginning of the manga, I think. Not only does he think rationally about who might help them (the Legislator), but he barely panics and he faces the Executive so straightforwardly I MEAN DID YOU SEE HIS EYES he’s not turning away from anything he’s so deadly serious and I’m ___(:3

also it’s finally the first time we’ve seen the three officials together and it definitely didn’t disappoint I’M SO GLAD AND ALSO? SENSEI?? THIS PAGE IS ILLEGAL??? WHAT IS THAT FACE THE LEGISLATOR IS MAKING IT’S NOT FAIR

so the Executive likes sweet things... www in different circumstances (well, a lot of different circumstances) maybe he and Ashiya would get along
