Fukigen na Mononokean Chapter 83 Spoilers

WHAT

Sakae explains to Abeno that just like a yokai would disappear if they’re commanded to “disappear” with Influence, touching a yokai infected with the parasite shrub while Influence is active will cause Abeno to disappear.

“I’d... disappear?” is the only thing Abeno can repeat in shock, and they’re interrupted by Aoi pawing at them again. Sakae says even without using Influence, Aoi should settle down soon. Having been infected by the parasite for so long without moving, Aoi will likely run out of energy and fall asleep soon, so they should just wait.

Seeing Abeno grab at his arm, Sakae says he’ll stop the bleeding in Hanae’s place and they sit down to do it.

While watching Aoi, Abeno thinks that he’d thought Aoi was actively being hostile to them, but actually Aoi’s actions are more like as if they’re playing around with a mouse. He gets mixed feelings about seeing Aoi so lively even though Aoi’s been infected so long with the parasite and lets out a long sigh.

Abeno brings out the container of medicine around his neck and looks at it, concluding that there’s no mistake that Aoi’s infection is at an advanced stage. Sakae asks him what the medicine is, and after Abeno explains, asks if they can save Aoi with that.

Abeno says no, because the medicine only slightly weakens the parasite shrub for a short while and it’s not a cure, along with running the risk of killing the host yokai from the sheer pain it inflicts. He continues, saying that the roots are so deeply embedded throughout Aoi’s body so he can’t be sure whether Aoi can withstand the pain.

Sakae agrees, saying if they make Aoi take it now, they might go on a rampage from the pain and make it unnecessarily harder to escape, to which Abeno nods in agreement. Meanwhile, Aoi yawns.

A while later, Sakae and Abeno are able to climb up and escape to the upper ledge of the clearing. Sakae begins to yawn, but Abeno asks him not to turn back into “Ashiya” yet, and says he has something to ask Sakae.

Abeno asks why Sakae lied and told them “Aoi is dead”, as well as why he seems to know Aoi’s condition so well to the point that Sakae could say Aoi would fall asleep quickly.

Sakae says as their last words and command to him, Aoi told him “Become a ocean fortress surrounding the Sea of Trees and never allow anyone to come find me”.

Abeno is confused at how Aoi could issue Sakae a command like that since he died many years ago. He also asks why Sakae is in the Sea of Trees if his true form is that yellow butterfly, why Sakae is possessing Ashiya, and why a human who’s supposed to be dead can exist right now. He asks Sakae what he even is.

“I am... the Influence that once used Ashiya Sakae’s body as a host.”

“Influence...?” Abeno repeats, and “Sakae” asks if Aoi never taught him that Influence is “the power of a human possessing a yokai”.

“Sakae” continues that “on that day, when “Ashiya Sakae” sustained a fatal injury, I should have disappeared along with him, but that human...” Sakae made his Influence (referred to as “I”) possess Aoi. Afterwards, Aoi tried to test if they could have Influence (I) possess a different human, while the panel shows baby Ashiya, but the process failed midway. But Aoi’s body wasn’t fit to be a host for Influence.

Among a sea of flowers, Aoi touches a black butterfly, and says, “Become a ocean fortress surrounding the Sea of Trees and never allow anyone to come find me”, transferring the Influence into the butterfly.

Aoi: “...I’m counting on you... Ashiya.”

Ashiya wakes up in an unknown room, wondering where he is when they were just on the island. He recalls his last memory is escaping with Abeno while Aoi fell asleep, and realizes he was “dreaming” halfway through, and saw an image of Sakae’s Influence moving to possess the yellow butterfly from Aoi. He realizes that his own Influence is also from Aoi, but more importantly, realizes that he saw when Sakae used Influence on Aoi, the parasite shrub disappeared from Aoi’s hand.

A LOT!?!?!?!??

The following thoughts aren’t in any sort of order but

Influence isn’t just a power that lets you (humans only?) command yokai absolutely, it’s a power that allows humans to possess yokai. Influence is suppose to disappear upon its user’s (host?)’s death, but Sakae was able to transfer his own Influence to a yokai, Aoi, and the Influence takes on Sakae’s personality.

-Sakae’s Influence (is this what we should call him now!?) says that a human that uses Influence on a yokai infected with the parasite shrub will disappear. But Ashiya at the end realizes that the parasite shrub disappeared when Sakae used Influence on it. Based on this, can the parasite shrub be cured with Influence at the cost of the human user disappearing? Is this what happened to Aoi, that for the duration Sakae’s Influence used Aoi as a host, the parasite shrub infecting them was held back and then took over again when Aoi made Sakae’s Influence possess the butterfly?

The next point is that we have??? A really different timeline than we all thought this whole time?

-Sakae begins working with Aoi as an employee of the Mononokean.

-On a certain day (Nov 2, from chapter 57) on a certain job, Sakae is critically injured, and transfers his Influence to Aoi and disappears. From that panel, we see that Aoi has already been possessed by the parasite shrub at some point.

-On Christmas when Ashiya is 5, Aoi disguised as Sakae visits Ashiya’s family. This is likely the time when Aoi attempted to transfer Sakae’s Influence to Ashiya (not confirmed yet though) but the process failed.

-When Abeno is 7, Aoi saves him and takes him in as a Mononokean employee.

From the beginning of the manga, I’m pretty sure we were led to believe that Aoi was possessed by the parasite shrub after Abeno met and became an employee, but that's apparently not the case... And it'd mean all this time Abeno was working for Aoi, Aoi was already infected by the parasite...

And also!!! So Ashiya's Influence is kind of "artificially" transferred to him and is actually Sakae's Influence, but then what's Abeno's? Are Abeno and Sakae's Influences some kind of "natural" power to them? We know more about Influence but we still don't fundamentally know where it comes from or why humans can have it, unless it's just a set power that can happen to humans who can sense yokai.

ALSO WHERE DID ASHIYA WAKE UP I feel like the most realistic answer is Koura’s place at the Kiyakudo but I saw some theories going around that it might be Abeno’s place...? (kya)

Fukigen na Mononokean Chapter 57 Spoilers

In which Abeno murders some poor flowers... (He does not)

Ashiya wakes up from yet another dream he’s been having about killing yokai with Influence recently. He looks up and notices the date, 11/2.

Jomatsu is visiting the Mononokean for the first time in a while! He updates them on princess Anmo’s love life and says that they’re both very happy now, although seems to be as oblivious as ever to Anmo’s continuing tendency to fall in love easily... He came to the Mononokean because he wanted to discuss with them about giving Anmo a present - he wants to get her something from the Mundane World but doesn’t know what.

Ashiya gets into it while Abeno bluntly says “why don’t you ask her directly” pfft. Ashiya quickly steps in, to Abeno’s displeasure, and suggests giving her flowers. Since Jomatsu can’t go into the Mundane World, Ashiya says he and Abeno will make the arrangements and head to Ashiya’s mother’s shop.

Ashiya’s mother greets them and thanks Abeno again for helping a while back. Ashiya asks his mother if she can make an flower arrangement that’s “FWAH (like princess Anmo) and DING” (Jomatsu’s exact words). He and Abeno are obviously troubled by the vague description.

Cheerfully, Ashiya’s mom asks if Abeno is the one who wants the flowers, asking if it’s for his girlfriend. Abeno promptly says yes.

“Abeno-kun, you’re popular, aren’t you? Meanwhile, Hanae here in middle school-...” “MOM STOP SAYING UNNECESSARY THINGS!!” Abeno: “?” moe....

Ashiya’s mom suggests Abeno make the bouquet himself, while Ashiya and Abeno obliviously think that it’s a better idea since they know what Anmo actually looks like, and they take her up on the offer.

Abeno proves to be tremendously displeased with the task, asking murderously which flowers would be like “FWAH” and such, and as Ashiya watches him glaring at the flowers, he wonders if Abeno is having a mini-panic over such an abstract request for once.

Abeno catches a glimpse of flowers that are for a Buddhist altar before Ashiya calls him over.

When Abeno has to to place the first flower, he can’t decide, and at Ashiya’s timid suggestion, stabs the flower right in the middle before irritably telling Ashiya to do the rest.

Abeno notices the date 11/2, and Ashiya finishes that it’s the date Sakae disappeared, and of his death.

Noticing Abeno’s expression, Ashiya asks if he said something to trouble Abeno. Abeno says no and why would he think that, but Ashiya says he feels like he can tell because Abeno’s forehead wrinkled lol. He tells Abeno not to mind if it’s because of Sakae, because it’s not like his family does anything today - and actually, he hasn’t told his family, and asks Abeno not to say anything either.

Abeno: “You didn’t tell them?” Ashiya says he wouldn’t know how to explain everything, and even though Abeno researched they still don’t actually know how Sakae died, while Abeno agrees.

Suddenly, Ashiya shouts that he’s not going to make a lawsuit claim for that bit of satisfaction or anything and he’s very grateful for Abeno researching all that he did, and the additional one million en that Abeno added to his debt is already enough.

 Abeno says he’s cancelling the additional million en, because Ashiya’s request was to “find out his father’s last moments” and in the end after exhausting all resources he didn’t exactly do that, so it wasn’t a request worth one million en. Ashiya tries to argue that it doesn’t change that Abeno spent a lot of time searching, but Abeno shuts him down by saying he doesn’t need it, and he’s not negotiating lol, so Ashiya accepts dubiously.

Ashiya thinks that he’s certainly happy about his debt going down, but wonders why Abeno would cancel it now of all times. Because if it’s because researching even further would be difficult, why didn’t Abeno mention that the first time he reported the results. And by “cancelling” the debt, Ashiya concludes that it means Abeno is giving up any further research. But in all this time, Abeno has never thrown out a request like he’s doing now.

Ashiya wonders if there’s another reason, thinking maybe Abeno found out something he couldn’t say, and realizes that maybe Abeno knows something else about his father.

“Um, this might be an awkward question to ask...” “What?”

“Are you hiding something about Sakae from me?”

ASHIYA CAN READ ABENO SO EASILY NOW I’M SO..... 

And Abeno was.... really, really cute this chapter asldkfjak It’s always been implied but as expected, Abeno doesn’t really do well with tasks that are more subjective/abstract huh... Haha, he likes it when they’re straightforward and there’s a clear goal instead of “whatever looks good”... Don’t just give up at the first flower...

Ashiya’s mom is so cute!!! Ah, maybe it didn’t come through in my summary but she was kind of making a comparison and it’s implied that her comment about Ashiya was probably like “meanwhile Hanae was never popular in middle school” which.... seems like just a joke at first but also.... is there something fishy there...??? At the very beginning of the manga, Ashiya never seemed to have any friends?? 

BUT REALLY, HONESTLY, Ashiya is so much more willing to force Abeno see him on equal footing now by asking him directly.. I really like this panel too:

As always, Sensei’s way of showing body language is amazing... There was a little bit earlier where Abeno has his habit of putting his hand to his neck when he’s uncomfortable and Ashiya noticing that (along with his forehead wrinkle ww) but in this panel Ashiya’s so clearly firm in what he wants and he’s caught Abeno off guard...

lmao abeno just saying “yes” when ashiya’s mom asks him if it’s for his girlfriend - HE’S JUST SO LAZY jk it’s all for yokai but he doesn’t even care how it looks about him salkdfjsd
