I haven't talked about the announcement for "Fujiko Mine's Lie" on here, mostly because I've been yelling about it on Twitter where no one follows me. I posted a lot yesterday, and now have nothing! I did all my words! So, I'd posted about it when I heard the news on my stories, but I also want to take a bit to reflect here on the passing of Kazuhiko Kato, aka Monkey Punch, the creator of Lupin III.⁣ ⁣ I kind of have a weird relationship with a lot of the initial conception of Lupin III and thus with Monkey Punch himself. I, like most fans, have likely developed a relationship with the material that came later, in other people's hands, and often quite different than the original intent (looking at you, Cagliostro).⁣ ⁣ But I also think that original idea, that core concept of characters that has stuck through it all, is amazing in and of itself. Lupin III is a massively ridiculous Mary Sue, the best-at-everything copyright-infringing descendent of a character written with quite his own copyright-infringing. Fujiko Mine, my favorite character, is nothing but a pun and a sexy style, wildly different character concepts that have over the decades melded into one figure. There's Zenigata and Jigen, and then Goemon--literally a throw in character to make the whole thing more Japanese.⁣ ⁣ None of these are things that should have worked. A lot of it didn't work, frankly, which is why the story behind the first anime series is so fascinating and you should definitely read about it. These are all very ridiculous concepts for a story that somehow has survived decades longer than it has any right to. ⁣ ⁣ I'm absolutely stealing this from @samirows and defriendlytroll on Twitter, but the lesson we should get from Monkey Punch is to just allow yourself to make the ridiculous thing. Do whatever it is you want to do regardless of whether it's supposed to work, and be 100000% confident that it's actually the coolest thing ever.
