On Dec. 9, 2018, my father, Colonel Richard “Butch” Sheffield, former SR-71 Blackbird Reconnaissance Systems Officer (RSO), died. Before he died, he said, “Linda, get my stories out there.” To honor him, I’m going to share one of his many stories. Dad‘s book was very close to getting published, but it is on hold.
This is the story of an SR-71 Blackbird testing mission that went wrong.
On July 29, 1968, I sat at my desk in the 1st. SRS when the phone rang. Someone from PSD said Jim Fagg had just failed his pre-flight physical and could not fly today. Did anyone want to take his place? I told them I would be right over.
I rushed over to PSD, took the pre-flight physical, ate the pre-flight meal, and rushed downstairs and suited up in my pressure suit for the flight. I did not have time to get my checklist, so I took Jim’s checklist and flight data from him. Ben Bowles, Jim’s pilot, and I had known each other for a while, and he was one of the wings' best. They had already taken him to the aircraft and strapped him in so we could make an on-time takeoff.
The mission was one we had been flying to test out the aircraft’s long range. It went from coast to coast and covered just about every state across the country. We made an on-time take-off, refueled, and flew to the East Coast, refueled, and were heading back to the West Coast, accelerating to Mach 3.
We were at Mach 2.88 and 68,000 feet over Oklahoma when the right engine suffered a catastrophic failure. The aircraft became very hard to control, and we could see the right engine burning even though we had shut off its fuel. Ben asked me if I wanted to “get out.” My back was still sore from ejecting the year before. I thought if I eject again, it might break my back, so I said, “No.”
It was a very rough ride down from 68,000 feet. The aircraft was bucking like a bronco. We were running lots of different checklists; (1) engine fire; (2) engine failure, (3) generator failure, (4) hydraulics failure, (5) descent, and (6) others (still classified).
I had declared an emergency with Air Traffic Control on the UHF radio, squawked emergency 7700 on the transponder, and given Ben the heading to Carswell, AFB, Texas (I picked Carswell because it was in front of us, and Ben had landed there before in B-58’s) called Beale on the HF radio to tell them we were landing at Carswell, while we were running all those checklists. I told Ben, “I wish I had my checklist,” because Jim’s checklist was set up for a left-handed person.
I could see the fire & smoke coming out of the engine even after we shut off the fuel. We had fuel tanks in the wing of the SR out to near the engine. If the fire reached that fuel, we would blow up.
As we approached Carswell, smoke was still pouring out of the right engine. I said to Ben that if it were still burning when we stopped on the runway and the fuel pools, it might explode. He agreed. I suggested we fly by the tower and ask them if they could see flames, which we did. They said there were no flames, and we landed. The fire trucks surrounded us once on the runway, and I could see the fire chief making a large circle with his hands and arms—it was the size of the hole in the engine. What we didn’t know at the time was the forty-gallon oil tank in the wing was burning, and shutting off the fuel did not put out the fire. Kelly Johnson, developer and manufacturer of the SR-71, said later that this was the only blackbird that ever flew structurally unsound (the right wing had warped due to the heat. It took three months to fix this SR 71.
If only this airplane could tell the stories, she could tell.~Linda Sheffield Miller

Success Stories of Outsourcing in Large-Scale Engineering Projects
Case studies have become an essential marketing tool in modern engineering practice. They can be utilized to target customers and other firms at all levels of the marketing funnel. Case studies if done factually are great tools for producing high-quality leads. A good case study will present a firm as a reliable institution that offers a reputable service. Case studies are not intended to overt sales pitches, but to guide readers towards buying. It aims to give customers concrete examples of what makes your product worthwhile. A worthwhile case study will provide full attention to what engineers value. So it will avoid assumptions, cite verifiable facts, provide evidence, and have logical content.
So, while we're at it, let's delve into some real-life cases where outsourcing certain engineering projects led to various outcomes. By examining these examples, we can gain valuable insights into the benefits and challenges associated with outsourcing in the engineering industry.
Tumblr media

Case No. 1 -  Aerospace OEM Manufacturer, Australia
The client is a reputed manufacturer of industrial fuel injectors and fuel-related parts for service centers, manufacturers of engines, and distributors across the world. They are prime in the manufacturing of fuel injection systems for all modern aircraft and the production is ongoing.
Client Requirement  Outsource 3D modeling of fuel tank straps as the demand for their flagship OEM fuel injector increased considerably. After a thorough search, the client decided to outsource to ‘Outsource2india’. This partner has about 25 years of experience in 3-D modeling and is well-qualified to handle the clients' needs.
Project Challenges
In the outsourced project, the outsourcing partner faced the following challenges –
The modelers had to receive training to completely meet requirements as the aerospace domain knowledge is still new and afresh.
The short time period to generate was another hurdle to cross.
The Solution
Requirement Discovery and File Download - The outsourcing received sketches of the fuel injector along with the pdf files of the same data for their reference.
Resource Planning - The outsourcing partner assessed the project's complexity and assigned the work to a dedicated expert to deliver the project within a week.
3D Part Modelling with Inventor 2015 - the outsourcing partner used the Inventor 2015 tool to design 3D models of the product.
Model Review and Submission - The 3D model designed by our team was sent to the client for review. A slight modification to the product design was suggested by the client and the model was updated as per the requirement and sent again for approval.

The Result
The client was satisfied with the 3D models furnished. In fact, the client went a step ahead to appreciate the dedicated efforts of the outsourcing partner and the ability to incorporate the recommended modification.
Case No. 2 -  GenPro Energy Solutions, South Dakota, USA
This client is known as the region's foremost expert on renewable solar energy as well as on energy efficiency integration. They work mainly in industrial sectors like solar pumping and filtration, solar power solutions, and energy efficiency strategies. The client has been striving towards meeting the advancements and developments in the technological area while building economical and sustainable solutions for its customers for the last two decades. The client has made a name for its integrity focussing primarily on market needs for renewable energy.

Requirement & Challenges
The client needed an FEA (Finite Element Analysis) analyzer for their progressive and cost-effective top-of-pole solar panel mounting systems.
So the strength of the structure needs to be analyzed by conducting a structural and thermal analysis to know how much it can withstand wind load and temperature fluctuations.
Skilled and experienced engineering services were needed as the work required expertise in the wind load and pressure differences with the changing environmental conditions. The geographical and geological risks should be effectively gauged by the pre-fabricated steel structures.
The challenge was to study various wind load levels to find out the structure's strength and sustainability.
Solution
The outsourcing partner ‘Outsource2india’ provides excellent FEA services with promptness as well as avoiding unexpected field failures.
Physical test expenses are also significantly reduced and using multiple concepts optimized design is derived.
A team consisting of 3 highly qualified mechanical engineers with experience in structural, thermal, dynamic, fatigue, and vibration analysis, etc., were selected for this project.
An accurate and robust report of the project constructed to help the client meet the highest level of quality requirements. The team used Hypermesh to analyze the associated risk factors.
The Result
The team carried out FEA analysis for 10 variants for 6 product families in 30 days. The client was highly pleased with the effort the team offered and has more number of products in line for further FEA analysis.
An FEA analysis for 10 variants for 6 product families was carried out by the team. The client has more number of products in line for FEA analysis. As they were highly pleased and satisfied with the team effort.
Conclusion
These real-life cases highlight in a bright form the strategic pluses and potential pitfalls that await outsourcing in large-scale engineering projects. With adequate and expert outsourcing firms, companies can easily manage such difficulties and deliver successful results. It is from the success stories experienced that meticulous planning, clarity of communication, and commitment to quality were made to ensure client satisfaction and result in long-term partnerships.

Restored Vintage Harley-Davidson Commands Record Price at Auction
Tumblr media
A restored vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle sold for $935,000 at an auction in Las Vegas in 2023, making it the most expensive motorcycle ever sold. The motorcycle, a Strap Tank, was one of just 450 of the model that Harley-Davidson manufactured in 1908. The auctioneer, Mecum Auctions, said many of the original parts of the motorcycle were still intact, such as the tank, wheels, seat cover, and muffler sleeve. Mecum Auctions added that the quality restoration was one of the major reasons the motorcycle commanded a record price.
The Strap Tank is the oldest Harley-Davidson motorcycle any collector can own. Harley-Davidson produced the Strap Tank at its factory on Chestnut Street in Milwaukee. Its name alludes to steel bands that attach the fuel and oil tanks to the bike’s frame. According to Mecum Auctions, the Strap Tank is one of the most coveted Harley-Davidson models.
David Uihlein, a Milwaukee businessman, found the record-breaking motorbike in a barn in 1941. In 2007, Uihlein finally decided to restore the motorcycle to its original condition. He partnered Paul Freehill, a collector based in Indiana, and with his help the vintage motorcycle was restored.

Custom Plastic Extrusion is a Lot More Prominent Than Most Realize
When a lot of people think about custom plastic extrusion, they call to mind images of various industrial applications. Obviously, this makes a certain degree of sense as these materials are quite common in manufacturing environments in particular.
What many takes for granted is that custom plastic extrusion is actually all around us - truly it isn't just for the factory floor any longer. In fact, there are a number of examples that are more than worth exploring.
Tumblr media
The Prevalence of Custom Plastic Extrusion: Breaking Things Down
One of the biggest examples of custom plastic extrusion and the ubiquitous role that it plays in our lives takes the form of its many, many uses throughout the automotive industry.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a car on the road these days that doesn't have a significant collection of custom parts at the center of it all. These include but are certainly not limited to things like adjustable seating mechanisms, fuel tank strapping, windshield wiper clips, dock seats, heavy suspension components for large trucks and trailers and more. Companies all throughout the automotive industry have come to depend on custom plastic extrusion not just because it offers a significant amount of flexibility when it comes to design, but it is also cost-effective when creating large batches of components as well.
Another common example of the prevalence of custom plastic extrusion has to do with wires and cables. Wires and cables play an important role in just about every type of project you can think of and custom plastic extrusion leads to equipment that is longer lasting, more efficient and of a higher quality than that which can be created through alternative means. Again, examples of this out in everyday life include wire bundling and protection equipment, wiring harness assemblies, cable overcoating, spiral cable wraps and more. Wires and cables are also used in a myriad of different industries, from automotive to aerospace and beyond. These jobs often have very rigid requirements and custom plastic extrusion makes it possible to address every last one of them.
Speaking of rigid requirements, that leads directly to another example of custom plastic extrusion in action - those applications that deal with military and defense organizations. Some popular examples include things like ULTREX® C-Channels, ULTREX® Chain Tracks, neck guides, reinforced tubing, spiral slit tubing, spiral wraps and roller covers, among others.
In the end, it's truly fascinating to think about just how versatile this technique and these types of materials really are. It makes perfect sense that so many organizations rely on it for situations where quality and innovation are an absolute must.
If you'd like to find out even more information about how custom plastic extrusion components play a bigger role in our daily lives than most people realize, or if you'd just like to discuss your own needs with someone in a bit more detail, please don't delay - contact the team at Spiratex today.

PSA for any Billy Hargrove fic-writers that wish to include the Camaro in some sort of crash scene (or perhaps THE crash scene):
Muscle cars are built to last, and many of them were manufactured with steel frames, meaning the car can endure some SERIOUS hits before it would start to fall apart.
It's not like these fiberglass cars that get dented at nothing sometimes (trust me, I have a '76 Dodge with a bumper that will fuck up someone else's car but barely get a scratch on mine...)
Also here are a few characteristics to keep in mind when incorporating auto maintenance scenes:
- You can "check" a tires air-pressure/PSI (minus a gauge...basically making sure the tire is drivable) by kicking the tire. If you hurt your toe a bit, and it bounces off easily, the tire is fine
- The engine must be OFF when checking fluids (certain fluids the engine can be running but to keep it simple just say its off regardless). Types of fluids are: transmission, oil, brake, steering, etc.
- If the engine is NOT turning over and won't start it's a battery issue. If the engine IS turning over but the car won't start than its either the carburetor or the starter.
- Belts are VITAL in general but more importantly for the alternator
-If you're doing a fic/hc where Billy is in the hospital for several weeks (or possibly a few months) the battery will most likely be dead when he gets back unless someone is occasionally cranking the car.
- CHECK THE FLUIDS MONTHLY
- ROTATE THE TIRES
- CHECK YOUR ALIGNMENT
- Billy has bucket seats, not bench, there is a difference
- Most vintage cars require pulling on some kind of lever near the turn signal switch for the headlights, but the high beams are typically activated by a button on the floorboard
- I cannot stress this enough THE DOORS CREAK
*** ***EDIT: Just had a thought...******
Scenario: Obviously Billy is strapped for cash (even more so if he's in the hospital for a while) so chances are when it comes to paying for gas he's either
A) Only going to drive when necessary
Or
B) He runs the tank down to fumes trying to stretch his gas money as far as it will go
If the latter is true, and he does it periodically he runs the risk of fucking up his fuel pump. When you're running on fumes the pump is draining what's settled near the bottom of the tank as well as what little gas is left. Too much debris in the fuel filter can mess up the pump by forcing it to work harder. Fuel pumps on vintage cars are fairly cheap compared to modern cars, but in the 80s they would be EXPENSIVE, especially for Billy.
This could open the floor for various headcanons, but if you're wanting to shed light on his financial struggle to add character depth, here's a cheapo tip: In a pinch, sometimes wacking the fuel filter with a wrench will do the trick.
I'll probably think of more, I just want to make sure you guys have what you need.

Memories || September 30, 1998 || The Fourth Survivor
Slipping by the USS air traffic before they knew he’d gotten the better of them, Nighthawk flew the MEDEVAC helicopter to Raccoon City. A no-fly zone had been declared over the city- but the US Military forces that were there were pulling out. They couldn’t risk being caught in the city when the missile strike was ordered.
Which also meant that there was no one there to enforce the order.
He flew low, and under the cover of darkness, scanning the last known channels of Alpha team and Delta team, going by each zone that had been determined at drop off.
“Delta team. This is Nighthawk. Come in, Delta. Delta do you read?”
Silence.
He flipped over to Alpha’s frequency: “Alpha team, this is Nighthawk. Come in, Alpha. Alpha do you read?“ Silence again.
Hovering, he changed position, quickly heading over to a different zone within the city. He had to be mindful of his position- the t-infected were absolutely swarming down below, and they were super aggressive, piling and clawing over each other trying to get up to him... albeit, futile.
He rose again, holding a pheromone canister close. If he found any survivors, that canister would give them a small reprieve getting in- it was designed to draw the zombies’ attention to a particular area. Crowd control.
Nighthawk continued his sweep over the city. His stomach churned at the burning buildings and destruction that had swept across the town. Umbrella had no contingency management for this, and it was coming to bite them.
He called for Delta, he called for Alpha. And every time it was met with silence. They... aren’t really dead, are they?
“Goddammit,“ he muttered, “Someone please, just... pick up, will ya?“
He took the mic, and dialed again, heading over to Section K. “This is Nighthawk. Delta team, come in. Delta team, do you read?“
Gut-clenching silence.
He looked at the readings on his fuel. The chopper was going through a gallon a minute. If someone didn’t get to him in the next ten, there was no guarantee that they’d be able to make it in time- to get out of the range of the missile.
One more try...
"This is Nighthawk. Come in, Alpha. Alpha, do you read?"
Click.
"Nighthawk, this is Hunk from Alpha Team."
Relief washed over Nighthawk,  "Man, I thought you were all wiped out. I've been trying to—"
"I'm at Point K12. Need info on my extraction."
K12- the sewers underneath the Police Department, and above the entrance to the Umbrella Facility- NEST... Hawk couldn’t help but notice that Hunk had said, ‘my’, though. Him. No one else.
He’d take it.
"Guess there's no keeping down the Grim Reaper, huh?"
"My extraction point!"
He could hear the noises of something in the background... moaning? Hunk had pursuers- infected.
"Relax, Mr. Reaper,” he said, flying upward and getting sight on the zone, “ I'm headed towards the front gate of R.P.D. Pick you up there."
“Got it.“
Nighthawk nodded to himself and flew up to the Raccoon City Police Station.
Holy shit.
If he thought the rest of the city was bad, it was peaceful compared to this place. He got sight on creatures he hadn’t seen before. He was familiar with the t-infected. Things they called zombies, but these were some creatures he had no experience with.
Mutated masses with reptilian features and bulging eyeballs in weird places.
Is that the result of G? He wasn’t so sure the canister would be effective, but he had it on the ready.
He kept track of his time. They had maybe eight minutes before they needed to scram. It should only take Hunk five of those minutes to get to front gate...
Something skittered up the side of the R.P.D with a hiss, flashing its flayed appendages, and sporting a large brain resting atop a jaw full of fanged teeth. The hell?
It lashed out with a long tongue like a frog and latched on to the landing skids of his chopper. “Fuck off!” Hawk drew his gun and shot the tongue squarely. It let go and bellowed a raspy scream... and then more of them crawled out the windows, flashing their tongues. Hawk pulled up suddenly, maneuvering away from the creatures.
Five minutes. Hunk wasn’t at the gate.
He reached for the mic in frustration, "What the hell, Hunk? You're late for extraction."
Gunfire and Hunk’s voice came through, "Front door's blocked. Gotta find another way out."
"Heads up,” Nighhtawk stated bluntly, “guys at the top just ordered a full clean up on Raccoon City. So move fast, or you can kiss your ass goodbye."
“Got it.“
He looked at his fuel. Half a tank... they’d be pushing it. Three more minutes. Three more minutes. More hissing. Goddammit. No choice but to circle back around and get the licky-things away from him.
Buildings crumbled around him. Small explosions popped off in the distance. So many, many monsters... he wasn’t certain there were many survivors here. And there wouldn’t be any once morning came. What happened to Delta?
Small beeps alerted him to his time. He circled back around-
Hunk still wasn’t there.
"Hunk!” he called, “Time's up!"
"Go, Nighthawk. Get out."
Hunk sounded almost resigned. Gunfire and groans fed through the background of the comm.
He’s crazy.
"I'm not gonna just leave you—" he cried indignantly.
"This is war...survival's your responsibility. "
“Goddammit...“
Heart racing, Nighthawk had to make a decision. Leave behind the only survivor- or save his own ass? It didn’t sit right with him. Making quick calculations, he sighed. He’d give three more minutes. Hover above, and keep eyes below. He could push three more minutes but they would absolutely have to land to refuel. He could hopefully get outside of the blast range by then.
Hopefully.
Circling back around- the sound of explosions were startlingly nearby-
Hunk. He saw that tell-tale helmet and red lenses even from his height. Hunk was tossing grenades to rush by swarms of zombies... and they were following him. Hawk dived down low, and popped off one of the pheromone canisters.
At the very least he could keep the mass of them off his tail for thirty seconds. A cloud of red spilled out from the canister as it fell on the ground, zombies pausing briefly as if confused by the smell of it.  Good enough. Nighthawk wheeled around to the front, lowering himself in front of the man who’d just breached the gate.
Hunk’s voice came over the comm as he paused.
"Why'd you come back?"
Hawk smiled underneath his helmet. “I wanted to meet the Grim Reaper.“
Heavy footsteps lingered not too far behind Hunk- and Hawk could see what it was-
A Tyrant.
“Shit! Get in, go, go, go!“
Hunk didn’t need to be told twice. He sprinted and hopped over the skids into the interior of the chopper. Hawk pulled up sharply, pressing the control to close the sliding door.
“Buckle up back there!“ “Got it!“
He heard Hunk strap himself in, clinging to the safety rails- he was breathing hard. But they weren’t out of it yet. The lickers jumped off the side of the R.P. D.- one of them grabbed onto the landing skid. Pulling the weight unevenly. An alarm blared a warning. “Hunk, I’m gonna shakem!“ He got only a grunt in response. Pulling up hard and leaning to counterbalance, Hawk scanned- A billboard- advertising Umbrella’s own drug: Adravil. A picture of a woman smiling, holding up the drug, captioned: Quick and easy relief.
“Quick and easy relief- I’ll take it,“ he mused, pulling up the chopper. If I angle it this way, at this speed... “Ok, heads up, gotta scrape this bug off- may be bumpy...“ “Mhm,“ another tired grunt.
Thwack. There was a small scream and scraping as the chopper brushed the top of the billboard. The blaring stopped. And the chopper picked up speed. Once they cleared the skyscraper lines, Hawk sighed.
“Once again, only you survived Mr. Death...“ he breathed, hitting hard that they were leaving the rest of Raccoon to die.
“Always. Only you survive...“ Delta, the Wolfpack was gone. All of Alpha. “Death cannot die...“ Hunk’s voice was barely a whisper.
Something bugged him- bothered him in the way Hunk was talking. “Hey, man, you alright?“
No response.
“... Hunk?“
No response.
Shit. “Ok, hold on, buddy.“
Hawk flew a clear distance from the city, and landed in the open fields. He unbuckled, and hopped to the back. Hunk was shallow breathing underneath the mask... blood still seeping through the fatigues... holding on to a vial- radiating purple. G.
Hawk took out first aid spray and folded up the fatigues to reach the bloody parts, spraying Umbrella’s own manufactured quick healing aerosol. It supposedly had some genetic coding from the t-virus, specifically, the regenerative properties.
Wounds stitched themselves, he wouldn’t lose anymore blood, but he was wet and cold... Hawk was reluctant to take off the stuff he was wearing in the brisk night... The shock could kill him. He took a foil blanket and wrapped it around him instead. It’d have to do. He hopped back up and went on the USS West Frequency. “USS West, this is Nighthawk-“
A terse male voice answered, “Nighthawk, you better-“ “I’ve extracted Special Agent Hunk from Raccoon City. He has a sample of the G virus. He’s all that remains of Alpha Team.“
A beat of silence, then: “What’s the status?“ “In bad shape,“ Hawk admitted, “He needs immediate medical attention. I am refueling now. Have a team on standby at the Umbrella West Medical Center. I’ll be there within the hour.“
“Acknowledged. Nighthawk, prepare yourself for quarantine as well.“
Hawk sighed, “Affirmed.“
The operator cut out, and he hauled the extra fuel containers out,  filling the chopper with half a tank. “Alright, Mr. Reaper...“ he sighed, ready to start flying again, “We gotta job to do, let’s go.“

The unique differences between the original MASS EFFECT trilogy and ME Andromeda’s art style.
Tumblr media
PART 3: Overall technological style.
Functionality and believability seem to be the principles at the heart of Andromeda’s design work at least for the most part. Where MASS EFFECT 1 was really about calling back to the design work of 70′s, 80′s and even 90′s science fiction focusing on style like Star trek for an obvious example. Andromeda aims for contemporary semi realism.
Tumblr media
What do I mean when I say that? Well basically it boils down to making your designs look as functional and close to being able to manufacture as possible in the future setting depicted or even today!
Tumblr media
The best way to distinguish between an artstyle that cares about realism and one that does not is to observe and see in your minds eye whether or not what it portrays is possible to construct and or function in a specific way it performs. Go back in time to the first game and you will quickly realise that a lot of the design work’s functionality and purpose was more so inferred by you or explained by lore than explicitly shown. You have to rely on a lot of codex lore etc to realise that the armour had unique functionality and purpose beyond just being visually interesting.
That is not the case in Andromeda as you will see.
Tumblr media
Mordins design looks awesome and interesting, but a lot of it is well... Nonsense! It is mostly intended for stylistic flare and visual interest above all else, “like what are the metal headphone looking things for?” Who really knows! But they sure do look cool right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Have you also ever wondered how on earth does Garrus gets out of his suit?, take a gooooooooooood long look at it and you will quickly realise that it’’s going to probably be a pain in the ass to take it off. There are no release mechanisms, barely any straps etc and points of articulation that make sense.
Tumblr media
Come ME3, a mark in the shift to provide more visual realism was apparent even if the designs became a little over the top proportionally speaking they had more functionality to them.
Tumblr media
Contrast this with the far more functional looking EVA/Combat/HEV suit you wear in Andromeda and you will quickly notice a heavy emphasis on straps, release mechanisms, emergency panels, hydraulic enclosures, screws, bolts, purpose built materials etc you name it. A lot of extra thought has gone into this!
SUITS.
Tumblr media
This helmet has a lot going on, you can clearly see the respirator built into the lower front. And the top semi dome shaped glass visor is part of a section of the helmet that visually looks as though it can be removed for repair or emergency.
Tumblr media
At the bottom of the grey chest plate, left to right. Are two release switches intended to detach once pulled up.
Tumblr media
An emergency handle or carry handle is placed at the top of the EVA suits jump jet and oxygen storage pack. Along with release mechanisms which you can assume are intended for assisted attachment and detachment by a squad member, there may even be a suit rigging station. The blue areas located on the triceps of the arm are suit hydraulic system enclosures which serve as a exoskeleton for enhanced mobility.
Tumblr media
Utility belts, armour straps, zips, and cut zones for articulations provide movement ability.
COMPUTERS.
Tumblr media
Computer and virtual interfaces have also seen a dramatic overall!, a big effort was made to add almost crystal clear graphics and other details on screens that while obviously not making any sense specifically, still added a sense of realism. In comparison the original games had more abstract computer interfaces that had barely anything on them at all besides being very orange and plentiful. Again as always you have to infer a lot of what is going on in the design since there is little in the way of specific detail to go on.
Tumblr media
VEHICLES.
Finally I would like to point out the differences between the Mako and Nomad. The classic vehicle in ME1 has a very stylised/iconic look to it that looks like it would of been right at home in Ron Cobb conceptual art.
Tumblr media
The Nomad however like with previous examples is the much more functional looking design this thing looks like it can be built! Suspension, pistons, guarded front, lights, fuel storage tanks and so much more.

10 New Cruiser Motorcycles That Prove Heaven Exists on Two Wheels
Tumblr media
Nothing squanders time as fine as cruising on a motorbike. By definition, cruising is lackadaisical and pointless, absent of destination or point. you merely cruise, at one together with your bike, taking within the sights and smells, the cool air laundry over, cleansing the soul. tho' gift within the moment, your unbound imagination wanders, the feeling of primal vehemence resonant with each flick of the gliding joint, hurling you into the long run. it's going to be the nighest issue to flying while not going the bottom. If you have lusted for a motorcycle—or simply have to be compelled to go back to within the saddle—the following 10 cruiser motorcycles square measure line to you. And for a lot of nice ways that to cruise to your mind's content, attempt driving one in all the ten sexiest droptops on the road.
At $13,499 Victory's military man may be a solid alternative for brand spanking new riders on a budget. inbuilt Iowa since 1997, upstart triumph defied all expectations with traction in a very market nearly closely-held by Harley-Davidson. They've succeeded by building well-engineered, boldly-designed bikes within the best yank tradition. With the military man, triumph evokes old-school, anti-authoritarian Bobbers like those created common within the classic amount film The Wild Ones. A Gunner's vogue replicates the repurposed military bikes that returning G.I.s brought back following the Second warfare, stripped to its minimalist necessities, usually with chopped—or 'bobbed'—fenders. hopped-up by a sturdy, cool 1731cc fuel-injected V-twin engine with twin, staggered slash-cut aspect pipes, the military man is all you would like to unleash your inner Brando.

If this bruise cruiser were a fashion plate, its balls would clang because it strode the landscape. That 109 within the name, by the way? It stands for cubic-inches. A refined however necessary distinction anyplace 'metric cruisers' square measure mockingly thought of disloyal. maybe that explains the Boulevard's tendency toward over-compensation. It's got aggressive, muscular bodywork with large slash-cut pipes and drag-style bars, hopped-up by a burly 1783cc liquid-cooled V-twin joined to a shaft-drive, 5-speed transmission. And equipped with the fattest rear tire within the phase, there square measure a lot of grips. you may appreciate its responsive handling and impeccably-designed saddle on long-distance rides. Dripping with perspective and also the muscle to back it up, the B.O.S.S. starts at $14,999. If you are desire a vehicle to point out off your standing, though, attempt driving one in all the ten status sedans that show who's boss.
Long moribund, the legendary Indian was revived as recently as 2011 by an equivalent company that brings U.S.A. triumph bikes. the first Springfield, Massachusetts company, once the most important manufacturer of motorcycles within the world, were the terrible definition—along with Harley-Davidson—of yank cycles till sputtering into oblivion in 1953. Enter the visionary of us at loadstar WHO recognized the worth of that heritage and also the growing charm of retro-inspired machines. praise to them for reliably rendering up to date Indians into competition with up-to-date engineering and technology matched to the brand's picture vogue. however, whereas the dramatic fender skirts, fairings, and luggage typical of classic Indians will appear excessive to some, the basic, rough-and-tumble Scout and Scout Sixty charm to less flamboyant tastes, like others on this list. the smallest amount dear bikes within the Indian lineup, these hooligans will rumble with the simplest, their responsive, high-revving engines parturition it down through a fine six-speed slushbox. The smaller displacement Sixty starts at $8,999 whereas the brawnier Scout goes for $11,299, each obtainable with ABS for an additional grand.
According to Harley's promotional copy: "Some worry concerning the corrupting influence of absolute power. we are saying hit the gas and provides it an attempt." currently that is a mantra we will embrace. The Muscle line may be a new iteration on the Porsche-engineered V-Rod, an associate outlier among the H-D family with its stout, precise 1250cc Revolution, V-twin liquid-cooled engine, Harley's 1st non-air-cooled unit. The low-slung, dragster-inspired long-distance encourages an untidy, stretched-out riding position within the best cruiser motorbike tradition. Its styling isn't everyone's bag, except for people who grasp, trust me, it'll flip heads. Like all Harleys, choices for individualizing square measures endless. Get one beginning at $17,449. you'll impart American state. after you need some power behind the wheel, however, attempt one in all the ten most powerful cars on the road.
Talk about culture mining. Honda, maker of conformist social science, Accords, and Pilots, at the side of outboard motors and prosaic generators, has the cojones to co-opt outlaw yank chopper culture of the Nineteen Sixties and '70s! what is a lot of, they force it off? That big, skinny, 21-inch front hoop wheel and 32-degree forks flow fantastically into that swoopy tank, channeling simple Rider. It's associate impressive, custom chopper look on a production cruiser motorbike. If you like one thing a small amount less rad and while not the ape-hangers, the nearly identical Stateline could also be the price tag. A discount at $9,999, with ABS a thousand-buck possibility, either model is concerning eight grand but a similarly-styled Harley Softtail flight. each Hondas return strapped to a powerful, torquey 1300cc V-twin. Killer appearance, standard. And if that does not flip you on to Honda, look at the Ridgeline, one in all the ten most baller, high playacting trucks of the year.
As the name implies, Kawasaki would have you ever believe the Vulcan Classic may be a thumping yank cruiser motorbike. And despite its Japanese lineage, they create a compelling case. Its tested fuel-injected 903cc V-twin delivers sleek roll-on power with a glorious fuel economy. Sporting a snug, easygoing riding position paired with classic touches like floorboards and a heel/toe shifter, you may rack up the miles. Big, burly, and planted, there'll invariably be an area for a cruiser motorbike just like the Vulcan 900. beginning at $7,999, low enough on the value spectrum to avoid wasting you some dough for one in all the seventeen most luxury analog bikes on the earth.
Eclipsed by its a lot of glam compatriots Aprilia and Ducati, idiosyncratic Moto Guzzi has been formation is own path since 1921 from the little Italian city of Mandello del Lario within the foothills of Alps. tho' not the prettiest bikes, these hand-built luxury machines possess a particular charm and feeling. The 1400 Custom is that the cruiser edition of the CA motorbike line, dropping the handbags and windscreen of the road model in favor of a sport saddle and drag bars, providing associate fittingly low-slung, nonchalant riding posture. From associate exceptionally long 38-degree telescopic fork rake to its uncommon transverse-mounted V-twin engine with cylinder heads that take away the tank, the CA is that the outcome of motorheads tuned into their frequency. The ride-by-wire throttle replaces mechanical property with package for preciseness engine mapping. Targeted to variable road conditions, elevation, and traction management, it helps keep its ninety-six horses and eighty-nine lb-ft of torsion optimized. Equipped with a half-dozen speed, shaft-drive transmission and a large array of accessories, the 2017 1400 Custom has associate MSRP of $18,490.
One of the world's premier motorbike names, Triumphs radiates with hard-line passion from a heritage engineered on over a hundred years of experience. And if the 1200cc comely float feels like it rolled off a film producer WWII flick set it's as a result of Triumph participated within the huge One. The float is freed from maneuver and stripped to its elementary essence, rather like it had been back within the day once fenders got cut for that 'bobbed' look. Since a float by definition is what one will to a stock bike, the inverted reality that this is often a production model could also be powerful to elucidate to your riding cohort. chances are high that it will not matter, though, once they feast their eyes on this attractive piece of art, 3 years in development. engineered expressly for the yank market, it's directly fashionable and classic, refined and badass. The word impressive applies here. A worth} at nearly any price, the float starts at associate come-at-able $11,900. Ariane 6 on the way to flight
ESA - European Space Agency patch (old). 6 December 2018 This has been an intense year for Ariane 6 development, with progress boosted across Europe: plants are manufacturing new parts using novel methods, all engines have been tested, and the construction of launch facilities is well underway.
Artist's view of the configuration of Ariane 6 using four boosters (A64)
ESA has worked with an industrial network led by prime contractor ArianeGroup, of more than 600 companies in 13 European countries, including 350 small- and medium-sized enterprises, to fine-tune the design and start production. Meanwhile, France’s CNES space agency has been preparing its launch facilities at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. Details on all these activities were recently shared at the 69th International Astronautical Congress in Bremen, Germany – along with two papers submitted to the congress: launch system and launcher system, here are the highlights: https://esamultimedia.esa.int/docs/STS/Ariane6_Presentation2018.pdf https://esamultimedia.esa.int/docs/STS/IAC-18,D2,1,1,x48586.pdf https://esamultimedia.esa.int/docs/STS/IAC-18,D2,1,2,x42969.pdf Europe's launcher for a new decade
Ariane 6 possible missions and configurations
Europe’s new Ariane 6 launcher covers a broad range of commercial and institutional applications while dramatically decreasing the cost of launches compared to Ariane 5. Enabled by ESA’s Light satellite Low-cost Launch opportunity Initiative, a multiple launch service for small satellites starting mid-2021 will offer cost-effective launch opportunities for satellites of under 400 kg, via a rideshare approach on launchers such as Ariane 6, and its smaller cousin Vega-C. The Ariane 6’s core stage is powered by Vulcain 2.1, an upgraded engine derived from Ariane 5’s Vulcain 2; its upper stage is powered by the reignitable Vinci engine. Two or four P120C solid-fuel boosters for Ariane 6, common with Vega-C, will be strapped on to provide thrust at liftoff. The P120C and Vulcain 2.1 development models have started their ground testing, the Vinci is now qualified. This leads to the next significant milestone: the delivery of the Ariane 6 qualification model, to start combined tests in French Guiana at the end of 2019. The second P120C model will be tested in French Guiana early next year, to verify its design and performance. The Ariane 6 upper stage will be tested at the DLR German Aerospace Center newly developed P5.2 test facility in Lampoldshausen at the end of 2019. Specialist factories have started production Casings for the P120C boosters are formed from specially developed carbon composite fibre, which is wound at Avio’s Colleferro factory in Italy. The nozzles for the boosters will be produced at a rate of 35 per year from a highly automated facility opened in July in Le-Haillan, France.

This April, MT-Aerospace – one of the main industrial partners of ArianeGroup on the Ariane 6 project – integrated the first hydrogen tanks of Ariane 6’s upper stage liquid propulsion module at their Bremen, Germany, facility. Airbus Defence and Space opened a facility this month in Oegstgeest, the Netherlands, to develop, build, test and qualify the engine frames for the Vulcain and Vinci engines. The Vinci frame will be transported to Bremen. The Vulcain frame will be sent to Les Mureaux, France, for final assembly with the Ariane 6 core stage.
Hydrogen tank for Ariane 6 upper stage
By the end of this year the ArianeGroup facility in Les Mureaux – hosting the largest friction stir welding machines in Europe – will be poised to begin producing the Ariane 6 cryogenic tanks at a rate of seven to eight stages at a time for Ariane 6’s lower liquid propulsion module. Testing the limits of Ariane 6 propulsion Testing is about stretching the limits of performance to gain a detailed understanding of how components work, not just under normal operating conditions but also at higher temperatures, pressures, and with different fuel mixtures. The P120C booster underwent hot firing at Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana in July 2018. In 135 seconds it burned 142 tonnes of propellant.

The Vulcain 2.1 engine will help to propel Ariane 6 in the first 10 minutes of flight, up to an altitude of 200 km, delivering 135 tonnes of thrust in vacuum. It has a simplified and more robust nozzle, a 3D-printed gas generator, and a heater for oxygen tank pressurisation.
Vulcain 2.1 engine first hot firing
The test campaign started in January with the first test firing at the DLR German Aerospace Center test facilities in Lampoldshausen. A total of 11 successful subsequent tests of the engine brought its total accumulated burn time to over 105 minutes. The second test campaign began in October. Vinci is the re-ignitable engine of the upper stage that increases the operational flexibility of Ariane 6 and ensures that the engine safely deorbits at the end of the mission.
Vinci engine qualified in tests
This engine was successfully tested more than 140 times and reignited multiple times in succession in near vacuum to complete its qualification. Final testing in October brought a total of more than 14 hours of operation. Launch facilities taking shape at Europe's Spaceport

About 600 people are currently employed in the construction of the Ariane 6 launch pad, which is 28.5 metres deep and 200 metres wide, formed with enough concrete to fill 67 Olympic sized swimming pools – approximately 167,500 cubic m. In September, the 700 tonne launch table that will support Ariane 6 at launch was positioned on the launch pad. The 8200 tonne mobile gantry that will store and protect Ariane 6 until it is retracted five hours before each launch, is currently being erected. The steel deflectors that will funnel the fiery plumes of Ariane 6 into the exhaust tunnels at liftoff will soon be installed at the base of the launch pad.

What to consider when choosing the best smokeless fire pit
While size and fuel type are the key purchasing characteristics, other features are also important, including material, design, and safety Mancave Stuff. Later, learn about these and other attributes of smokeless fire pits.
Material
Since smokeless fire pits are used outdoors and must withstand extreme heat, they must be made of durable materials. Most smokeless fire pits consist of stainless steel or alloy steel. Stainless steel is not only the more aesthetically pleasing of the two materials, it naturally resists rust and corrosion and can better withstand intense heat. Alloy steel, by comparison, should be stored indoors or protected with a rainproof cover to prevent rust. Also, alloy steel discolors under intense heat.
The durability of stainless steel makes it superior to alloy steel. It also makes it more expensive: a stainless steel smokeless fire pit can cost twice as much as an alloy steel fire pit.
 Size
The size of a smokeless fire pit determines the size of fire it can create and the amount of heat it can produce. Most smokeless fire pits are between 14 and 20 inches tall, while portable models that measure around 13.5 inches in diameter are suitable for two to four people. The largest models can measure up to 30 inches in diameter, large enough for gatherings of up to six people. Portable models typically weigh around 20 pounds or less, while large permanent fire pits can weigh more than 50 pounds. Smokeless fire stoves designed for backcountry camping weigh about a pound and measure just 5 inches in diameter.
 Design
Thanks to their double-walled design, smokeless fire pits eliminate smoke and reduce ash. The walls have a space between them, and as the fire burns, it heats the air in the space. The heated air rises through the holes at the top of the double wall, where it mixes with the smoke from the fire and burns again, removing the smoke.
Most smokeless fire pits are cylindrical with vents at the bottom of the firebox and at the top of the rim. While some use round holes for the vents, others have a more stylish look with vents in the form of patterns or even the manufacturer's logo.
Portable fire pits have a collapsible design that allows the base to fit inside the firebox to make the fire pit more compact for transport.
 Characteristic
Since smokeless fire pits burn very efficiently, they can reach much higher temperatures than a standard fire pit. Wood and pellet fire pits can reach temperatures up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and gas fire pits can produce over 50,000 BTUs, which is more powerful than many gas porch heaters. This ability to reach extreme temperatures makes smokeless fire pits capable of heating a larger area than a standard fire pit of similar size.
Some smokeless fire pits also come with accessories. Certain models include grills that allow the fire pit to be used for grilling food, while portable fire pits typically include a storage bag with handles or a shoulder strap for easy portability.
 Fuel types and efficiency
Smokeless fire pits use a variety of fuel types, including pellets, propane, wood, and biomass. Smokeless propane fire pits are easy to light and produce no smoke at all; however, they do not offer the same campfire experience as a wood fire. Additionally, they require a 20-pound propane tank for fuel.
Wood, biomass, and pellet fire pits have the potential to burn hotter than gas fire pits, but they do produce ash. Gas models burn cleaner and with fewer emissions than wood, pellets or biomass.
Although not as efficient as gas, wood pellets contain less moisture than wood and burn more efficiently than firewood. Pellets are less bulky and are more suitable for smaller smokeless fire pits.
 Easy to use
Smokeless propane fire pits are the easiest models to use. Simply light the fire pit with the push of a button, resulting in no messy ash to clean up. Wood fires, on the other hand, create ash. Pellets are drier, which makes them easier to light than firewood.
 Safety
Since smokeless fire pits produce no smoke, embers, or ash, they are generally safer than regular fire pits or wood fire pits. However, they do produce intense heat, so keep a fire pit at least 10 feet from structures and set it on brick, stone, or some other type of masonry. Some fire pits include additional safety features, such as a screen to help prevent embers and sparks from causing injury.
