#fucking “gay woman representation doesnt count as real woman rep” bullshit excuse me??

Fucking. My straight best friend is usually a great ally, but sometimes hidden homophobia/privilege comes out of nowhere and it pisses me off.

We were talking about the recent Doctor Who doctors, and contemplating whether we think 13 is as bad as people say she is, or if that's just misogyny infiltrating the reviews (for reference, her and I are currently on 12, trying to get caught up).

She says she thinks some people are unhappy that 13 is gay, and she kind of agrees with them. Because 13 being a woman was supposed to "reverse" the power dynamic, but her being gay "took away" from that because the companion is still a woman. My friend also said (completely missing the irony!) that it would be nice to be able to see herself in a doctor.

I feel like if I had a "progressive ally homophobia" bingo sheet, I would've gotten a bingo from that conversation. I was so floored by the audacity of her comments I couldn't decide how to respond, so I just changed the subject instead.
