For the Character Option Bingo: Yusuke Kitagawa.

Okay, most of my thoughts on poor Yusuke are either shared by or copied from you.

It's impressive that Yusuke shares a VA with three other characters that are on the Nintendo Switch - Cole Cassidy, Chrom and @inkwell1013's Fighting Chance favorite, Ganondorf!... hey, that's 75% swordbois!

Something I'm wondering all of a sudden: did Ms. Kitagawa choose Yusuke's name, or did Madarame? Is Kitagawa even Ms. K's surname to begin with? If Madarame can change the title of Sayuri...

One thing I dislike about Yusuke is that it feels somewhat as if he was given Goemon in order to parallel Lupin III or w/e. IDK that anime very well, but... if you were gonna do that, why not make Goemon Ryuji's Initial Persona? Ryuji's supposed to be, like, Akiren's right-hand man or whatever, right?

... that said, Yusuke and Captain Kidd don't feel like they go together super-well, though...

Oh, and Yusuke is all the genders and sexualities and none of them at once. It's impressive!

yusuke was literally erased from the sayuri, his mother's final gift to him and the only thing he has to remember her by, for profit and greed and fame and vanity and just because madarame could, it's no fucking wonder he's so afraid of creating art for material gain during his confidant

i think another reason madarame as a character is so frustrating to me is that his route doesn't treat any of the themes of the game with the gravity that they've been afforded in both routes before and after his.

and i get that because his route is meant to be showing how towa can get worse, and more broadly, how being groomed can fundadmentally change a person. because madarame is (one of many of) towa's groomer and i don't think this is up for debate.

but take that same idea and apply it to fujieda's route. in both routes towa is constantly getting reminders of his past. only one of those routes shows towa actively struggling with the realizations he's making.

his reaction to remembering who shot out his eye is about the same as when rei asks him to consume something other than alcohol and tobacco. despite towa having been shown to struggle with every aspect of his past. i mean, just look at how he reacted to the contents of the box before he remembered what the significance of it all was.

every day i remember yusuke feeling naturally drawn to the painting of his mother cradling him as an infant to the degree that it inspired him to paint and i fucking explode

i feel as if towa's reaction to remembering being shot being so different to the other reactions about his past can be chalked up to his childhood being way more buried/traumatising than when he got shot.

And also I think both madarame and taku's routes immediately become worse after you play fuji's route. like it's obvious from the start madarame is manipulating towa -- and it only takes a little bit of thinking to realise how inappropriate their age gap was in the past.

but then after fuji's route you realise why the silence drives towa so crazy. and that madarame used silence to wear towa down so in a way he took direct advantage of towa's childhood trauma... and that madarame didn't just groom a teenager but an already extremely maladjusted teenager. and then there's the whole question of wtf towa's older brother was doing to just ... allow it? like without knowledge from fuji's route, madarame's route is a lot less disturbing. idk what my thesis here is i just wanted to share

HI sorry it took forever to reply to this. i do agree that with extra context it does make madarame a more interesting character but i feel like with rei and taku they didn't really need that additional context to be interesting characters with fulfilling routes?

it also doesn't help that madarame's route is only a single chapter compared to the 2 that the other characters got, plus fraise. i know why it's done that way narratively but i think it works to weaken his character...

my ideal madarame route is getting a full chapter of him worming his way back into towa's life starting with the ghost rumors and the roost boss giving towa his lighter. then he slowly shows up more and more until he gets kidnapped (which would be the beginning of immutable in my perfect world)

because like, to me reading towa's delirious inner monologue as he tries to starve himself to get away from madarame just wasn't very interesting. i'd prefer it way more if there was an actual struggle like when rei confronts him in the deathmatch area, or when he leaves them for the final time and both of them are screaming at towa to stop.

part of me is glad to see the post where ppl r thirsting over yajima from genshiken bcos she looks just like me for real (no but for real for real) but every time i die a little bit because even just thinking abt genshiken nidaime makes me start frothing at the mouth with near rage. but oh well.
