summer is still bullshit
ey kids, well. it’s still hot and i still have things on my to-watch list that don’t make any fuckin’ sense.
whenever i am watching something and i find myself going “who the fuck rec’d this??” the answer is inevitably either: some weeb youtuber, or myself for seiyuu reasons.
this explains so much of the garbage i end up watching.
instead of taking my own advice and immediately sinking into the padded stupidity of a Shippuden rewatch, i decided to hang in there and keep on chipping away at my to-watch list. i am.. real dumb.
figuring that maybe it was just older shows getting me down, i tried something from the most recent spring season. and what gem from last season did i pick? that’s right, i picked Room Mate. now, i’m a person who watched and cringed and still somehow enjoyed the weirdness that was Makura no Danshi. but Room Mate is just.. another level of POV terribleness. while the weird pillow boys show tried to cram some tropey characterization into each episode, Room Mate just.. gives up. even with the same three dudes for the full run, i don’t remember much of anything about any of them. one was sporty, one was creepy, one was cutesy. that’s about it. oh, and they all want the POV character. for.. reasons, i guess. if that’s your thing, have at it. for me, it was almost unwatchably bad. also, the end of every episode features a still of the three characters, and then their clothes disappear in different ways? man, this was weird in a really unfun way.
right so, spring season held no joy, back to the older shit, right? next i watched Colorful, because hey. it won an award, okay. it’s probably not terrible! and it wasn’t, it really was a neat movie and it was pretty. but also it heavily involves suicide, which uh. YEAH I DON’T NEED THAT RIGHT NOW, THANKS, HAHA NEXT.
onto something lighter. okay. yes. lighter and pointlessly fluffy. Megane na Kanojo definitely fits the bill for pointless fluff, but i honestly can’t remember anything about it, outside of “the girls had glasses.” which, i mean, i like girls in glasses, so. mission accomplished, i guess?
alright, soothed and refreshed by meganekko. i’d recently seen someone mention really liking Haibane Renmei, so i picked that next. and.. well. i guess if you’re in it for idyllic pastoral backdrops, you’ll be happy. if you want any questions raised by the show to get answered, you won’t. like, the characters actively ask questions about the way things work in their world, events make you question everything too.. and just. no answers. none. nothing. also, pretty sure this is ALSO about suicide. OR SOMETHING. fuck if anyone knows. it’s pretty? sure.
yep, old things still bullshit. let’s try last season again! come on! Room Mate was an isolated thing! it’s fine! so, having watched a few episodes earlier in the season, i finished off Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine. and it was alright? i mean, i liked a lot of the characters, and i wanted to spend more time seeing what they’d get up to, so i consider it some anime success. everyone is pretty, prince trope stuff, tiny teacher is tiny and done with everyone’s bullshit, while still having some Tragic Backstory. honestly, probably the best thing i watched last week. pointless pretty boy anime. yep.
because i am a huge masochist, i’m STILL working through the 1 cour shows on my to-watch list first, and so i picked Yumekui Merry. and it is.. very obviously a show i only put on my list because of Pikorin. and yanno, this one was a big letdown. it had a neat little premise, some interesting character designs and silhouettes, and some spiffy sakuga moments mixed in. it just.. never went anywhere. it kept giving out these little breadcrumbs, and they led.. to something else. apparently, a lot of the anime is stuff created solely for the animated version, so that explains a lot. frustrated sighing all around.
last, and HO HO WOW, i watched Aku no Hana. i.. oof. it’s hard to say i enjoyed this. i mean, aesthetically, it’s GREAT. i love rotoscoping and this is just. eerily realistic, between detailed backgrounds and the characters. it’s a kind of awful awkward coming-of-age story, with that kind of “this sucks because life sucks” feeling. plus teenage melodrama. plus a whole bunch of creepy foreboding and general.. uneasy creepy film, hanging over everything. it wasn’t satisfying, and i can’t say i ENJOYED watching it. but it was.. good. hhhh, that doesn’t make sense. ah well.
and now.. well, now i have settled into my Shippuden rewatch. if you watch it while knitting, you don’t notice everything getting repeated three times (often in the same conversation) as much. and if summer is going to continue being too hot and long, might as well watch something i actually like.
as a reminder, you can look at the crap i plan to watch this season and judge the length of my to-watch list and find out what my scoring says about my Shit Taste over at my list on MAL. and if you want to talk about anime or tell me i’m wrong about what i like, please message me! like, please.
haha i’m profoundly alone.
#a post about emchan#shut up emchan#weebhauschan#i wonder if i should talk about Shippuden#can i make my talking about anime post series EVEN MORE UNREADABLE??#it's possible
