Regulus watches the first clump of long, dark curls fall to the bathroom floor. He tracks it as it moves through the air, hitting the tile softly, noiselessly–it’s all too quiet of an action for something that has such a big impact.

“Right, Reggie, how are you feeling?” Sirius asks, his tone cheery yet genuine.

If Regulus is honest, he’s elated. He didn’t know something as simple as cutting his hair could feel so…right? Sirius has barely cut off any of Regulus’ hair, yet Regulus can’t even begin to describe the amount of emotions currently swirling around in him.

Regulus hums in response to his brother–it’s not really an answer, but it’s the most he can manage. 

Sirius takes it in stride, simply humming back as he picks up another section of Regulus’ hair.

They sit in silence for a while and Regulus closes his eyes, listening to the quiet snip-snip of the shears as Sirius hacks away at the length of his hair with steady hands. It’s honestly the most careful and conscious Regulus has ever seen his brother act–though he’s approached everything relating to this topic with care since Regulus first confided in him about it.

“Do you remember the first time our mother forced me to cut all my hair off?” 

Regulus pauses for a moment, searching through memories to find the time Sirius is referring to–it shouldn’t be as difficult as it is to find the memory, but he generally doesn’t reflect much on their younger years anymore.

Regulus hums again once he finds the memory. “I recall you screaming like a banshee when she pulled the shears out.”

Sirius huffs a soft laugh, continuing to carefully snip away at Regulus’ hair. “Oh yeah, it was an absolute mess. She couldn’t get me to stay still enough for the cut, so my hair came out all choppy and uneven. Majorly backfired on her, I’d say.”

Regulus snorts. “It’s a wonder she kept cutting it after that; that haircut was dreadful.”

“And yet you were still jealous of it,” Sirius retorts lightly, the humor evident in his voice.

Regulus’ eyes fly open, immediately defensive. “I was not–”

“No, no you definitely were, Reggie.” Regulus can feel the shears waver in his brother’s grip as his body shakes with laughter. 

“Oi! Don’t fuck up my hair!”

“I’m not going to fuck up your hair, calm down,” Sirius huffs. “Besides, a shit haircut is all a part of being a boy–we all have one at one point.”

Regulus squints his eyes at the wall in front of him. “Yes, well I’d like to avoid that since I have to show up to work tomorrow.”

Sirius snorts in response as if to communicate that he understands, and Regulus supposes he does. 

The pile of black curls on the floor grows with each passing moment, more hair falling from Regulus’ head to the cold tile below as Sirius hums merrily behind him.

As always, it’s Sirius who breaks their silence. 

“I was always so jealous of your hair,” Sirius admits quietly.

Regulus blinks in surprise. “You were? Why?”

“I just always thought your long hair was so cool. I hated my short hair; I wanted my hair long but I wasn’t allowed to grow it out,” Sirius mutters. “I was a little bitter about it for a while if I’m honest.”

Regulus is quiet for a moment as he lets Sirius’ words sink in, then he snorts. “Bit ironic, innit? I wanted to be able to have short hair like you while you wanted to have long hair like me.”

Sirius barks a dry laugh. “Oh yeah, absolutely hilarious.” 

Regulus’ phone buzzes in his lap and his eyes dart down to the screen as it lights up with a text. Against his will, a small smile breaks out across his face.

“James?” Sirius asks, his smile shining through his voice.

“Piss off,” Regulus shoots back reflexively. Then, after a moment of stubborn silence, he grumbles a confirmation that it was, in fact, James who texted him.  

“He’s bitter he has to be at work rather than here?” Sirius asks, his tone all too knowing.

“I swear he’s more excited about this haircut than I am,” Regulus replies, rolling his eyes despite the fondness that floods every inch of him at the thought. 

Sirius snorts. “I’d reckon it’s less to do with the haircut and more to do with wanting to see you happy.”

Regulus just hums in response and closes his eyes again, letting the quiet get filled with the sharp sounds of the shears. He knows James is just excited for Regulus to be happy–to feel more himself. He’s been lovely about all of it, every step of the way, and though Regulus wasn’t necessarily worried he wouldn’t be, it’s just really nice to receive so much unconditional love and support.

Regulus honestly isn’t sure which of them two gets happier when James refers to Regulus as his boyfriend.

“Alright, you little shit,” Sirius announces, setting the shears down on the counter, “it’s time to appreciate all my hard work.”

Regulus shoots up to move toward the mirror, freezing in his tracks as he makes eye contact with his reflection.

His hair is the shortest it’s ever been–dark curls falling off his forehead and gently framing the sides of his face. Ridiculous as it is, Regulus can feel his eyes start to water as he just admires himself.

Sirius moves to stand behind him, staring at their reflections fondly with his arms crossed. “Look at you! I’m practically an artist.”

Regulus lets out a choked laugh, a couple of tears breaking free as he looks at the both of them in the mirror. “Mother would have a heart attack if she saw us now.”

“So what I’m hearing is you absolutely love it!” Sirius says, giddy and proud as Regulus nods his head in affirmation. Then, Regulus watches as Sirius slowly flashes his mischievous grin, baring his teeth wide as his eyes sparkle with undeniable humor. “Yeah, it looks great, Reggie. You know, I’m sure James will love it too! It’s honestly the perfect length for him to grab–”

Sirius cuts himself off with a yelp, practically sprinting out of the bathroom. He should really know not to provoke someone with easy access to a pair of shears.

Hello I know it's been Forever since you sent this ask but I'm finally getting to answer it! I'll explain the fics above the cut and put snippets below the cut.

t4t rayrose Kinda what it says on the tin lmao. Specifically it's about trans Ray going out to a queer bar for the first time after leaving for college, where he's finally gotten to have a little more freedom of expression since he's out from under his very conservative parents' roof. It's after he's gotten the Big Haircut and gotten some men's clothes and he wants to try going out as himself for the first time but it goes... kinda horribly. Until he meets Rose, the bartender who is trans and came out at a young age with supportive parents and is the only person to see Ray for who he really is. And then they fall in love <3 I'm thinking it may be a prequel to the We Could All Be the Best Kind of Friends/Greater Sunset Polycule series

3. Rayvorose 4+1 This is a Not Sunset Cis fic! It's about 4 times Bobby's relationship with Ray and Rose changes and 1 time it's perfect. The stages are strangers to saviors, saviors to friends, friends to lovers, lovers to qpps when Bobby realizes he's aroace, and then the one time it's perfect is after Carlos is born and Bobby brings Carrie and Julie in to meet their baby brother. Ft. copious amounts of hurt/comfort!

5. Uh oh (rayvorose but at Rayrose’s wedding) Another one that does what it says on the tin lmao. This is the next installment of the Greater Sunset Polycule, so Bobby is dating Luke Alex Reggie and Willie, and they're all really good friends with Ray and Rose. He's the best man at their wedding, and during his best man's speech, Bobby realizes oh shit, I'm in love with Ray and Rose. And his four boyfriends and Ray and Rose are all like. Yeah man. We've been waiting for you to catch up, but could your timing be any worse? And then they get together <3

Ray’s heart leaps at being called a handsome guy, only to immediately put up walls. She must have heard how terrible it went with the other girl and decided to kick him while he’s down.  “Are you mocking me?” “I would never,” the woman says earnestly, leaning in to put a hand on Ray’s arm. “I’m like you. Just in the opposite direction.” “Oh,” Ray frowns, and then it clicks. “Oh.”  “Oh,” the woman repeats teasingly, but Ray doesn’t feel like he’s being made fun of. “I’m Rose.” A flurry of butterflies erupts in his stomach as he says aloud for the first time, “I’m Ray.”

And that reminds Rose of the other thing that shocked her during that call. “You called me your friend.”  Bobby’s eyes widen, just a little bit. “Huh?”   “You think we’re friends!” Rose says, grinning now and grabbing him in a hug. “You finally admitted it!”  “I did not,” Bobby says, though he can’t quite hide his smile.   “We’re friends!” Rose cheers, jumping and bouncing in a circle, forcing Bobby to spin with her.  The front door opens and Ray comes in from work, smirking as he studies the scene in front of him. “What’s all this?”  “Bobby said we’re his friends!”  “You have no proof of that!” Bobby insists.  Ray grins and joins the hug, trapping Bobby in the center. “It’s okay, cariño. You’re our friend too.” Bobby sighs and slumps into their arms, the fight draining out of him. “Fine. We’re friends. Will you let me go now?”

“Gorgeous,” Bobby breathes out before he can stop himself. Ray’s brilliant smile returns. “Thanks, cariño. Have you seen your boys yet?”  “Yeah,” Bobby says, crossing to the wardrobe to change into his own suit. “I think they might actually be the death of me.”   “You say that like it’s a bad thing to have four incredibly handsome boyfriends.”  “And two incredibly beautiful best friends,” Bobby adds. “I don’t know how I’ve survived this long.”  “Flirting with me on my wedding day?” Ray tsks. “Scandalous, Bobby.”  Bobby laughs, because it has to be a joke, right? Bobby wasn’t flirting, was he?

With a grumble of discomfort Ron - all of seventeen and made of off-brand Nikes off Chapel Market - crouched down in front of a treats machine that lived round a quiet corner of Whitechapel train station. Through the flap that protected newly dispensed goodies from the elements the young man's forearm went, the covering pushed aside and held that way with his free hand as, elbow deep in the machine's business, he did his level best to retrieve the grab-bag-sized packet of Walker's Cheese & Onion Crisps that'd got lodged between dispensary-cabinet and plastic frontage. He could see the fucker clear as day, was eye level with it and could see his hand nearing it but try as he might, it remained out of reach. A snarl twisted his features.

"Fuck sake!" he exclaimed.

"Wha's up?" called back the double of him; twin brother Reggie acting as lookout on the corner just in case the plod - plastic or otherwise - came roving. He'd seen none yet, but was ever-wary. They were sly, London coppers. Especially when you was two lads like him and Ron.

"Can't reach th'fuckah!" Ron growled back, drawing his arm back so he could give the machine a firm shake. Twice he did this before he clocked the [This Machine Is Alarmed] sticker adorning the thieving rectangular bastard's window. Gingerly and full-scale riding the spike of adrenaline the certainty of a blaring alarm caused, the East End's Own mini-hoodlum released his mechanical captive and scooted away from it on his bum to a berth of close to two meters - far enough to deny to those who'd certainly be looking in that he'd put violence on the thing at all and also, by the by, far enough for his back to bump into Reggie's right leg. His brother looking down at him in question, Ron eyed the machine cautiously; waiting for the beady eyes and the siren scream that...never came.

He was just about to brave a second go at it when Reg and his easy charm saved the day. A station employee'd caught his eye on their way by this specific nook of the station's expanse, and with some silver-tongued pleases and pleas to their good nature he had them convinced of the need to open up the vending-thief so he and his brother could partake of their paid for but withheld gains. Five minutes later the lads were sharing out their bag between them, its silver innards and the crisps they kept fresh on full display between their touched together knees.

Ron never did mention quite all that'd made him give the machine such a wide berth so suddenly. It didn't matter in the end. They had their snack, and the day wound on regardless.

∆ Vic is holding a homebaked cake with your fav colours, with fancy(if not messy) writing that reads "Happy Birthday to our Favourite"

∆ Patrick went a little crazy with the candles, so you got like 100 all over the cake

∆ Reggie takes you in the Trans Am, you get the front seat all to yourself, since Henry gave up his seat for your special day

∆ "only for today" he'll mutter under his breath

∆ Takes you wherever your heart desires, whether thats the Quarry, the mall, or a small diner for milkshakes

∆ Patrick believes in the 'punching you however many times you turn old' tradition, so beware

∆ Towards the end of the day they give you a big ass card

∆ Patrick and Henry tried making a mice dinner, unfortunately without the surveillance of Vic, so you guys get a blaring smoke alarm and a pot of burnt spaghetti (serious, how did they mess up so bad to burn spaghetti, no one knows how they did it💀💀)

∆ You decide to buy them all pizza for their efforts today, it made you feel so loved

∆ At the end of the day, you get massive hugs and kisses from all of them, with Patrick trying to sneakily smack you
