Perry’s Victory on Lake Erie

"On a beautiful September Friday in 1813, Oliver Hazard Perry’s nine-ship squadron of hastily built ships and converted merchant vessels defeated a six-ship British squadron off Put-in-Bay at the western end of Lake Erie. It was the first time in United States naval history that an entire enemy fleet was captured.  This meant American control of the lake.

The story of Perry’s victory began the previous year. The United States declared war on Britain in the summer of 1812. Tensions had been brewing for some time. Westward expansion of the fast-growing nation was stalled by native tribes of the Midwest and stirred by the British in Canada and by the impressment, basically kidnapping of American sailors on the high seas, all of which fanned the flames. The United States had attempted to remain neutral, trading with both Britain and France, then embroiled in the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. In June 1812, Congress declared war on Britain.

In August 1812, Ft. Detroit, Mackinac and Ft. Dearborn (Chicago) all fell, resulting in British control of the Michigan Territory. Erie ship captain Daniel Dobbins was at Detroit when it fell and managed to make his way to Erie where Pennsylvania Militia commander for the region Gen. David Mead told him he needed to take the news of the defeat to President James Madison in Washington, D.C. There, Dobbins convinced officials of the need to build a naval squadron on Lake Erie, and he knew just the place to do it. Erie, with its protected bay, would make a perfect place to build and equip a fleet. With $2,000 in his pocket, Dobbins returned to Erie to begin his enormous task.

The only resource at his disposal there was timber. Everything else, iron, cannon and men would have to come from elsewhere. In a hastily constructed shipyard at the foot of modern Cascade St., Dobbins began the construction or conversion of six ships in Erie. In January 1813, Commodore Isaac Chauncey,  commander of all U.S. naval forces on the Great Lakes, arrived from Lake Ontario. He instructed Dobbins to enlarge two of the partially built ships. Later that winter, seasoned ship builder Noah Brown arrived and the construction of two lager briggs, later to be Named Lawrence and Niagara, began. Brown wrote “Plain work is all that is required; they will be wanted for only one battle.”

In March 1813, 27-year-old Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry arrived in Erie to take command. A veteran naval officer, Perry had been languishing without a command, most of the U.S. Navy then being blockaded in Atlantic ports by the British navy, the largest in the world. Perry faced many challenges, foremost of which was a shortage of men. Perry grew frustrated with what seemed to be a lack of cooperation with Commodore Chauncey. His fleet would set sail that August with fewer men than Perry wanted and only about 200 experienced sailors among them, and an undetermined number of African American sailors. Many of these men had seen previous service aboard the U.S.S. Constitution earlier in the war. Perry complained that too many of his men were “a motley set-Negroes, soldiers and boys.” Chauncey wrote to Perry that he considered these black sailors were “amongst my best men '' and they would serve gallantly during the upcoming battle. The comment by Perry was a result of frustration with recruitment not racism, and he had nothing but praise for the African American sailors.

As the American fleet neared completion, Perry drilled his men in gunnery and ship handling. The two largest American ships, Lawrence, named for naval hero Captain James Lawrence killed earlier in the war, and Niagara were both armed with 18 332 pounder carronades-short-barreled guns that were deadly at close range and 2 12 pounder long guns with a much greater range. Lt. Jesse D. Elliot would command Niagara while Perry made Lawrence his flagship. Meanwhile, the British fleet out of Amherstburg, Ontario, at the western end of the lake, was also making ready for battle. Its commander Robert Barclay had similar problems to those of Perry. Short of men and supplies, Barclay sailed his nine ships to Long Point, and established it as his headquarters. Barclay effectively blockaded Perry’s squadron inside Presque Isle Bay and should have attacked but instead withdrew toward the western end of the lake on July 31, 1813. What became known as “Perry’s Luck” was on display.

In early August, Perry’s ships sailed into the open lake. The two brigs, Lawrence and Niagara were too large to get across the sandbar at the mouth of the bay. Noah Brown ordered “camels,” large wooden barges filled with water attached to the sides of the brigs. When pumped out, the ships were lifted high enough to pass over the sandbar and refitted with the rigging and other weight that had made passage impossible. Perry’s fleet set sail for the western end of Lake Erie, in search of Barclay.

At dawn on September 10, 1813, Barclay’s fleet was sighted at anchor just to the northwest of Put-in-Bay. Perry ordered his ships “cleared for action,” the decks sprinkled with sand for traction when the blood began to flow. He ordered his new battle flag, emblazoned with the dying words of Capt. James Lawrence “Don’t Give Up The Ship.” The flag had been sewn by a group of women in Erie just for this moment.

One man was missing. Daniel Dobbins who had made it all happen was not there. Commanding officer of Ohio was sent back to Erie for supplies. Missing the battle was one of Dobbins’ greatest regrets of his life.

With the wind in his favor, Perry closed with the British who opened a tremendous hail of iron against Lawrence. 83 of her crew 0f 102 were killed or wounded as the ship was torn by the fire from the British. The deck ran red with blood. Below deck in the officer’s wardroom, assistant surgeon Usher Parsons tended to the growing number of wounded. A British shot pierced the ship’s side and tore a wounded man from his arms. Perry’s black spaniel howled through the battle from a storage closet below deck. Where was Niagara and Elliott?

Frustrated by the failure of Niagara to join the fight, Perry transferred his battle flag to the other brig in one of the ship’s longboats. Once aboard the Niagara (an embarrassed Elliott left in the boat Perry had come in and worked to bring up the lagging smaller ships of the fleet.) Perry brought Niagara into the battle, “Crossing the T” sailing through the now disrupted British line. Warships of the day mounted no guns fore or aft so they were defenseless. With Captain Barclay mortally wounded aboard his flagship Detroit, the British ship began to “strike their colors,” meaning lowering their flags, as a sign of surrender. Perry had won the Battle of Lake Erie,

Oliver Hazard Perry would be hailed as a national hero, and the United States, like Perry, was lucky in the remaining War of 1812. Perry and Elliott would feud in writing for years to come. Perry tried to compliment Elliott, but Elliot would not let the matter rest, even after Perry’s untimely death of yellow fever on his birthday, August 23, 1819, at the age of 34. He is buried in Newport, Rhode Island.

Today, visitors can see a bust of Perry and Perry’s sword and telescope he used in the battle at the Hagen History Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, and can visit the Erie Maritime Museum to see the reconstructed Niagara.

A Incident involving radical nationalist who used there quirks to cause trouble for everyone. Carlos who had a desire to protect others and a unrelenting hatred for the nationalists, awakened his quirk and decimated the latter. Now ready to take on this new chapter in his Carlos is on his way to prove he got what it takes to a hero for others, now if only he remember Japanese lessons before the school year starts because his Japanese is terrible.

Carlos’s quirk allows him to be a surprisingly versatile combatant. He can shape shift his arms and legs into weapons such as swords, axes, lances,grandes,even guns and cannons and tools like sledgehammers, shovels and drills which could double as extra weapons for his already Ridiculous arsenal. His eyes could see multiple directions at once keep track and lock on speeding targets and even Potentially find a target’s week point. And his ears can pick up sensitive noises and detect oncoming threats. But despite this amazing abilities he can get agitated and stressed out to the point of exhaustion it doesn’t help that he can be ill tempered too if things go south.

The Reaver Cannon-drum

(I’d like to preface this by saying that this shouldn’t be taken as peer-reviewed academic research. I am not an expert on any of the following subjects and may be wrong. If you ARE an expert on this stuff, please feel free to correct me! I’d love to hear your input)

So let’s talk about the wildest piece of Reaver lore I’ve ever found. Just as a preface, the excerpts I’m about to post are from the official Fable novella Reaver by Peter David.  Unlike some of the other official Fable literature, this one does not include the warning at the beginning saying it isn’t officially canon (this is because some novels make assumptions about player characters and player choices, therefore can’t be considered canon for each and every player’s worldstate). Because it’s about Reaver’s history before Fable 2 and contains no player characters of player decision influence, we can assume it’s meant to be canon. (EDIT: apparently they may have redacted the short stories, BUT THEY WERE CANON AT ONE POINT. Plus IDK if they redacted the historical parts since we learn about some of this from Dread when you meet his ghost in the second game so ???) Now this novella details the events that took place in order for Reaver to earn the title Pirate King in which he single-handedly dispatches Captain Dread’s entire crew on Captain Dread’s own ship. It’s a great short story! But one part of it caught my attention.

In this passage, Reaver has managed to barricade himself on the gundeck and intends on shooting a cannon straight up into the ceiling/deck in order to destroy the mast. It sounds cool and all, but begs the question how physically strong is Reaver? Let’s take a look! So the Age of the Sail, the time period in which international trade was mostly done by sailing ships, took place from 1571 to 1862, and the Golden Age of Piracy was between the 1650s and 1730s.  These will be roughly the analogous real-life time periods I’ll be pulling historical examples from.  Now I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that it isn’t actually a full cannon he’s lifting since those were actually discontinued in the 1700s because they were too unwieldy. I’ll say it’s a demi-canon, also known as a 32-pounder.  This refers to the weight of each cannonball one would use as artillery with the canon, which, by the way, Reaver whiffs one-handed at a man hard enough to kill him in an earlier passage.

Meanwhile I have trouble lifting a 20 lb box of cat litter with both hands.  For reference, the heaviest weight bowling ball used by professional bowlers is 16 lbs. A full-sized cannon uses 42 lb cannonballs, just fyi.  

Okay so a demi-cannon weighs about 5,600 lbs according to Wikipedia (though one of the ones they gave as an example was recorded as being “60 hundredweight”) and is 11 ft long.  The average modern car weighs 2,780 lbs for reference. SO accounting for the cannon itself at 5,600 lbs, the 32 lb cannonball inside it, and the 18 lbs of black powder required to fire one of these things, we’re looking at 5,650 lbs total.

Now my next question was would the fact that there was a fulcrum in the center affect the force needed to point it directly upward? Could it be used as a lever? Well I did a lot of research on calculating torque and accounting for weight distribution (I even emailed my high school physics teacher) before I realized something pretty obvious…

The cannon base is too short to point the cannon directly upward.

Not without lifting up wholesale at some point at least. To prove that the cannon base was too short to rotate it 90 degrees straight up I did a little research on naval cannons via my university library (online of course, social distancing and all that). I managed to find a copy of The Art of Gunnery, written in 1647 by master gunner and mathematician Nathaniel Nye.  He suggests the use of a Gunner’s Rule or Gunner’s Quadrant, devices meant to help the gunners measure the degree angle at which the cannon is raised to ensure accurate firing.

So to find the angle the cannon is raised at you have to use a lil’ math. I took the maximum effective range of the demi-cannon (1600 ft), converted it to the average pace measurement because that’s what Nye wrote all his measurements in (2.5 ft = 1 pace,  1600 ft = 640 paces), and plugged that into his chart of gunner quadrant degrees to cannon range in paces(the Table of Randons), and found that the gunner quadrant should be set at just above 10 degrees. So it looks like the highest you should be raising a cannon for it to accurately hit a target is only TEN DEGREES. That’s nowhere NEAR the 90 degrees Reaver mentions. There would be no reason to build a cannon that could swivel to 90 degrees. In fact, according to one illustration showing the measurments of a demi-cannon on the warship the Mary Rose, the fulcrum is placed 6.5 ft from the end of the barrel, which means to account for the fact 4.5 ft of the 11 ft long barrel would need to fit under the fulcrum to go to 90 degrees, the cannon would need to be FOUR AND A HALF FEET OFF THE GROUND.

So Reaver would HAVE to have picked up that 5,650 pound cannon, according to me timing a bunch of demi-cannon firing recreation video, in under 2.5 seconds.

That’s 500 pounds more than the average weight of a RHINOCEROS.

So on top of being the Hero of Skill, Reaver is also unfathomably strong. Like ridiculously otherworldly strong. (Put THAT in your fanfictions, cowards)

Car Time With the Guys - Road Trip Rambles (X-Men Edition)

Ft. Charles Xavier, David Haller-Xavier, Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler), Rogue, Remy LeBeau, Jubilee, Jean Grey, Peter Maximoff, Jono (Chamber), Kitty Pryde and her dragon Lockheed, Scott and Alex Summers, and Hank McCoy.

Kurt is allowed to drive on the second night of the trip

Charles wakes up in the middle of the night and sees Kurt driving with his feet while he munches on a bag of chips.

“Are...you driving with your feet?”

Kurt is also not allowed to drive

This is why only Hank is allowed to drive

David gets left at a rest stop and they drive for at least 20 minutes before anyone notices

“WAIT WHERE’S DAVID?” Kitty shrieks.  Hank slams the breaks.  Peter pulls out his earbuds.

“Was the plan...not...to leave him at Denny’s?”

They go back to get him, but David’s already filling out an application.  He’s accepted his fate.

“Just come with us, Davie-”    “No,” he says, ladling the pancake batter onto the fryer, “Denny’s is my home now.”

They break down at a gas station at 3 AM one night, and everyone is tired, grumpy, fidgety, and hungry.  Hank is sent with Jean, Scott, and Alex to get food from the gas station.  Everyone else piles out and Charles tells them to run around and stretch their legs.

This is either after Shadow King has been defeated, or it’s just a day where David is in control and really feeling relaxed and himself and he’s getting better (not to mention incredibly slap-happy at this point).  Either way, he’s watching Jubilee and Kitty as they bop along to their tunes, and he starts dancing.

Not a lot at first, but soon the others notice.  And David’s...really good.  He’s surprisingly good at dancing

So is Remy

3 AM dance-off at the shady gas station

Meanwhile Hank is trying to decide how much food all these kids need.  Jean wants them to have at least one or two healthy things.

“This is a gas station, Jean.”

They end up buying boxes of Debbie Cakes, corndogs, hot dogs, bags of chips, slushies, sodas...Hank just gets a coffee for him and Charles

They stop at a few hotels and Remy helps Kitty unpack.  She didn’t tell him that she had put Lockheed into her suitcase.

*shrieking* “GET THIS VARMINT AWAY-!”   “Don’t call Lockheed a ‘varmint’!!!”

At another stop they nearly blow up a gas station (it was Jono)

Jono was getting looks from a few guys because of his scarf and stuff.  He got miffed, stuff got out of hand, and they had to bail because people saw them and the aforementioned nearly-blowing-up-the-gas-station

Remy gets put in charge of babysitting Jono for the rest of the trip. Jono’s kind of a loose cannon but it’s okay because so was Remy, once.  They’ll bond and Remy ends up being a great influence (mostly)
