Greymouth to Hokitika
Monday, March 2nd, 2020
I got an early start mainly because there was nowhere to sit and relax before my ride. I went to the Do Duck In Bakery just down the street for an egg and bacon quiche, raisin bread, and a latte. After breakfast, I went to New World grocery for tangerines (from the US of course) and a chocolate bar.
I jumped on the West Coast Wilderness Trail and head South along the coast for the first 10 or so kilometers. The weather was overcast with the sun poking through sometimes.

The trail headed directly East away from the coast through some nice forests. The trail followed the Taramakau River although you could not see it most of the time.

The trail slowly climbed into a more alpine forest. The water became very clear in all the streams. At one point I stopped and stripped down to my board shorts and went for a swim in the beautiful water. It was cold and amazing.

After my dip and a little food, I headed back on to the single track in the woods. I took a little spill on the gravel because I was daydreaming. Just a little scrape on my knee. I used Christy's medkit to clean the scrape and slapped a small Tegaderm on it. It wouldn't be an adventure without a little blood.
I passed through this place called Cowboy Paradise, it's a fake old west town with places to shotguns. Very strange.
I saw another Weka. These are such strange birds. They walk very slowly and are very curious when you stop and watch them. They will come up to you and don't see you as a predator.
After another 10 km of gravel, I made it to a sealed road which led me to another trail. This trail followed a 6 ft wide waterway with crystal clear water. I was tempted to swim again but there were a ton of signs warning of drowning. I guess kiwi's aren't very good swimmers.

This trail dumped me out on a sealed road and that was the end of the gravel. I rolled into Hokitika at about 4:30pm.
I rode through the town and then headed over to the Airbnb where I was staying in a tent. This is not your ordinary tent. There are a double bed and electricity. After a shower and a chat with the host, she's from Utah, I walked into town to Fat Pipi Pizza for dinner. I had a salad and pizza called the Greenpeace that were delicious.
After dinner, I walked around town and bought a few things at New World grocery for dessert and riding food. I'm trying to only buy dinner and breakfast and eat lightly during the day. I feel like I'm eating way too much.
Once back at the Airbnb I walked out on the beach at sunset. I forgot to mention that the house is right on the Tasman Sea.
Tomorrow is an easy day so I might do a side trip.
