Maybe Y/N ends up pregnant at some point and she has to relinquish her championship and during the duration of her pregnancy LuFisto continues to cause problems for the reader and her little family (consisting of Isla, Christian, and their Unborn child) and it starts causing her problems and Christian helps her in every way that he can?

An: This is already long and I didn't want to make it longer so there will be another part with the LuFisto drama and how Christian helps the reader

Summary: Y/n returns to the ring after her broken nose like she never missed a beat. But everything changes when Y/n unexpectedly becomes pregnant. How will this affect not only her relationship with Christian Cage but her career in AEW?

Six weeks had gone by faster than I expected and before I knew it I would make my return just in time for forbidden door. Within those six weeks I was gone many things happened, the drama with LuFisto had pretty much been settled and I was able to bond more with Isla. Christian was home when he could and when he was home the three of us would do ‘family things’. Whether that was going to the zoo, the park or just going out for ice cream. The end of June was soon approaching which meant Isla would soon be on Summer Break. Which also meant ‘Mr. Father of the year’ would bring his spawn to work if he wanted to.

Since I had been spending the majority of 5 weeks with just Isla I wanted to make the last week of our bonding time special before I had to go back to work. She had just finished school so I thought now would be a perfect time for us to go on a little trip just the two of us to celebrate a successful school year. Isla picked on Florida and since I have a home in Ft. Lauderdale I thought it would be a perfect fit.

Although the trip would only be 3 days since I had to arrive in Chicago on Tuesday to make my return we made the best of it. The first day we arrived we spent at the beach building sand castles, walking on the boardwalk, going shopping in the cute stores by the beach and getting ice cream. By the end of the day we were exhausted, Isla even fell asleep in the car ride home. As much as I wanted to let her sleep she needed to wash off all of the sand. As I carried her from the car to the house I couldn't help the warm feeling I had. I know she is not my biological child but within these past weeks I couldn't help but feel like she was. Earlier today when we were on the beach an old lady came up to me and said how I was a good mother for taking her daughter for a fun beach day. I didn’t even correct her, I just thanked the lady and wished her a good day. From a far glance I guess we could be related. We both had blond hair, Isla had blue eyes while mine were green but you could tell that she was Christian Cage’s daughter.

The second and third day of the trip also went well. We did lots of shopping, spent time at the pool, went to the park, and the fair just so happened to be in town so of course we had to go. Soon enough I was on a flight to Chicago to make my appearance on Dynamite the week before forbidden door.

Wednesday

Since I had gone straight from Florida to Chicago I had Isla with me. Christian was also at Dynamite so he was excited to show his daughter all around the arena. It felt a bit weird to be back mostly because of the terms I felt on. Leaving with a broken nose and drama only to be welcomed back with smiling faces that were glad to have me back.

“Good to see ya back friend” said a familiar voice who gave me a hug from behind. When I turned around I noticed that the familiar voice was Willow Nightingale. “Oh Hi Willow!” I told her with a sigh of relief. “You gave me a heart attack” “Sorry” she apologized “Are you still on edge about what happened?” Of course she had to ask that question. The truth was although the ‘gosip’ died down it still had me feeling on edge. The photo of Isla Christian and I walking on the boardwalk of the beach by our house haunting me. I still felt like I was being watched but unsure by who. “I guess you could say that” Willow looked at me with a sympathetic look. “Ya know what It’s fine, I’m fine” that was a lie “ This is the kind of stuff you sign up for” I told her, trying my best to sound un bothered by the situation even though I knew she knew I was lying.

“Okay, then. You know the plan for tonight?” Willow asked. “Yep, see you soon!”

I was a bit upset since this storyline would be a bit rushed but the plan for forbidden door was for me to put my ROH women's championship on the line against Willow who currently held the NJPW Strong Women's Championship. Regardless we would put on a great performance, in the meantime I had to get ready for the show.

The time had come, everything was finalized and 10 minutes from now I would make my return.

“You ready?” Christian asked me “Hopefully, I’m a bit nervous” I told him truthfully “I’m sure you will be fine!” I gave him a smile before mouthing him a thank you for his support during my six weeks off. Just then I felt a tug on my shirt. When I looked I saw Isla holding something behind her back. “Yes” I told her “I made you something” Isla then revealed what she was hiding behind her back, it was a beaded bracelet. “You made this for me! That's so sweet! I am definitely going to wear this tonight!!” As she handed me the bracelet I couldn't help but stop in my tracks as I realized what it said. “Do you like it?” Isla asked me “Yeah…I love it” The bracelet had purple, pink and white heart beads. In the center it had three letter beads that read ‘Mom”. Christian noticed the bracelet and asked Isla what it said. “It says Mom. You are my new Mom right Y/n?” Mom, that was the first time she had ever called me something even close to that before. Unsure what to say I looked at Christian who offered a big smile. “I guess so, you can call me whatever you want okay?” “Okay!” She then gave me a big hug!

All out 2023

I have been officially back for a few months now and since then I have had 4 successful title defenses. Forbidden Door, Blood and Guts, ROH Death Before Dishonor and All In. All of the matches had gone quite well for the most part. At Death Before Dishonor I took a hard fall on my shoulder and needed to be on some medication. It was nothing a little KT Tape and Phiso couldn't fix. Tonight is All Out in Chicago and I’m currently waiting to see if I am medically cleared. Physically I felt fine but I guess one of the backstage doctors didn’t like the sight of my still bruised shoulder from All In. My opponent at All In was Athena, she was aware of the former injury to my right shoulder so like any good wrestler she used it to her advantage, targeting the shoulder in an attempt to secure the victory. Unfortunately for her it didn’t work and I retained my title. I wasn’t booked for the show tonight, which was fine but I would be accompanying Kris to the ring for her match against Ruby Soho. The outcasts are known for trouble and no way I was going to let them cheat and win.

“I’m sure everything is going to be fine Y/n” Kris was kind enough to wait with me for the doctor even tho she had a big match tonight “I really hope so Kris, I don’t need another injury” A few minutes went by and the doctor came out “Ms. Y/l/n” Shit, moment of truth. Kris held my hand as we awaited whatever news lied ahead.

“Your Pregnant” I felt my stomach drop. “What? That has to be some kind of mistake, there is no way I’m pregnant” I yelled at the doctor. “Well Ms. we ran a bunch of tests and your shoulder is fine but according to your blood you are pregnant. It is mandatory we run pregnancy tests through blood with every patient” I looked at Kris who was in shock just like me. “Would you like to know your options?” The doctor asked me. “What am I going to do?” I let out almost in a whisper. How irresponsible is this, the champ getting knocked up during one of the most historical reigns. I didn’t even want to think about what Christians reaction was going to be. “Well Ms. I can tell that this is a shock. I can go through methods of termination if you are interested” The doctor offered handing me a pamphlet. “Y/n, I really think you should talk to Christian before you make any decisions. This is his baby too and he deserves a right to know even if you decide not to keep it” Kris told me. She was right, Christian needed to know and I will tell him at some point.

The PPV went well, Luchasaurus would retain the TNT championship against Darby Allin and Kris would defeat Ruby Soho to keep her TBS championship. I sat backstage with my friends watching the event trying to have a good time but I couldn't stop thinking about what that doctor told me. I didn’t want to tell Christian never mind my boss but I should have known he would find out about it sooner rather than later. “Y/n, Tony would like to see you in his office” Shit

I walked into the office terrified, how was I going to explain to my boss that his golden goose got knocked up. “Take a seat” I sat nervously

“So, I spoke with the doctor” I said nothing. Partially because I had no idea what to say and the other part being embarrassed. “Is it true that you are pregnant?” He asked

“Look Tony, I am really sorry. There must be some kind of mistake, I promise you I am a responsible adult. I feel fine, promise, but they told me that they ran a mandatory pregnancy test with my blood and it came back positive. I really don’t know what to do or say. Only Kris and now you know. I haven’t even told Christian yet.”

He said nothing, he just wrote something down on a piece of paper.

“Look, I know this is not an ideal situation for anyone. I’m not going to say anything ok. I’m sure you and I both know that the media is going to have a field day with this one. I think we should continue with the press conference as normal and if anyone asks about your ring status say you are waiting to get cleared. After that you should talk to Christian, see a doctor and we can go from there. We can always say you had to relinquish due to injury” The relationship between Tony and I had always been a bit different than others. I had been in AEW since day one and due to my extremely close relationship with the Elite I even became a producer for AEW along with doing my part to elevate the women's division in any way I can. Tony and I were actually friends so even though I knew him and he knew me he was still my boss and this conversation was uncomfortable on both ends.

***** *Kris: You have to tell him at some point *Y/n: I know but it’s not the time *Kris: Y/n, If you don’t tell him soon I will just tell him *Y/n: Okay I will geez, not too sure how he will react to being a Father again at 50

The past few days had looked the same, Kris and I texting back and forth. Her trying to encourage me to tell Christian and me being too scared. I had been close on more than one occasion but the words wouldn't come out. I’m pretty sure Christian is starting to catch on too.

After All Out the two of us went for dinner and when I didn’t have a drink with my meal Christian’s suspension started to grow. “So, what are we drinking tonight? I don’t feel like champagne, we could do a nice red or just grab a bunch of drinks? Vodka soda, that’s your favorite?” How was I about to explain that I would not be drinking, I mean I may or may not have a drinking problem. “Um, I think I’m not going to have a drink tonight” Christian looked at me with a shocked expression “Are you feeling alright? What happened to Y/n?” He said jokingly. I, however, was not laughing. “I’m fine, I just don’t feel like having a drink tonight.” I said a slight edge in my voice that I didn't mean to happen. “Alright then, I’m still getting a bottle of red if you change your mind”

I knew I had to tell Christian, tomorrow was Dynamite and Tony needed answers. I went to the store and grabbed a few pregnancy tests. I knew I was pregnant but I needed to see it in order to really believe it, it’s one thing for someone to say you are pregnant but another to see a positive test in the flesh. Christian went out to grab a few things so I knew now would be a good time to get it over with. It wasn’t like I had never taken a pregnancy test before, I knew how they worked but I found myself sitting on the bathroom floor reading the instructions carefully to make sure I had done everything correctly. I peed in a cup then let the test soak in the cup for about 30 seconds before leaving it to sit for another 5 minutes to show the result. Those 5 minutes were the longest 5 minutes of my life. I looked at the test and of course it had two lines meaning I was pregnant. Of course I was in denial, so I took three more. I had bought four different kinds, the generic ones with two lines and the fancy digital ones. So far it wasn’t looking so good. Three tests had came back positive. Now I waited for the digital, *3-6 weeks pregnant*.

This didn’t make sense? If I was at least 3 weeks pregnant that would mean that I wrestled All In pregnant? That match against Athena had been brutal, I got put through a dam table. How could a fetus survive that? I could feel my throat tighten as tears started to fall from my eyes. Just then I threw up.

Christian’s pov

I knew something was up the moment Y/n returned from her appointment with the doctor. Kris went with her since I wasn’t able to but I regret not going. Something must have happened because ever since the both of them had been acting weird. In an attempt to lighten whatever happened I offered dinner after the show with Y/n to cheer her up. She was hesitant with how late it would be but gave in. Everyone needs a good drink after a hard day at work so when Y/n declined a drink I was even more suspicious. “You know I have a drinking problem right? I think I should start being more careful on what I put in my body” Yeah something was definitely up. I wouldn't say Y/n had a drinking problem but in the years I’ve known her she has never once declined an offer to get a drink. The next few days had been no different. Isla had been with her Mom so it had just been Y/n and I. Everytime I tried to ask her what happened she would push me away, something that she doesn’t normally do.

I went out to pick up a few groceries and once I returned I found Y/n sitting on the floor of the master bathroom with tear stained cheeks. I sat next to her and asked “What’s wrong?” nothing “If something happened the other day at work you can tell me you know” I waited, I knew she wanted to say something but was having trouble getting the words out. “You’re going to be mad at me” her words were so quiet it was barely a whisper. “Why would I be mad at you honey?” What would I be mad at? “Don’t yell, I’m sorry. I don’t know how this happened” Y/n had tears in her eyes as she spoke. “I won’t yell, I promise but I need to know what happened so I can help you” I told her carefully

Just then she got up and handed me four items from the sink before returning to her spot on the floor. She was now fully crying and turned her back to me. It took me a minute to realize what I was holding in my hands. Four pregnancy tests, all different kinds but all were positive. “Are these real?” She turned to face me, mascara now ruined. “Are you mad at me?” I wasn’t mad but I was shocked, but I was also happy. “No sweetheart, I would never be mad at you. Especially over something like this” I gave her a hug to which she returned, burying her head in my chest as she continued to cry.

I knew what this would mean, Y/n being pregnant would change everything. Although this was a shock I was so happy. We had never talked about having kids, Y/n was still in her prime and I was nearly 50. “What are we going to do?” I wanted Y/n to know that I would support her for whatever she decided. I mean she is making history with her current title reign and at the end of the day this is her body we are talking about. “This is your decision Y/n. I want you to know that I am happy about this but I understand if you don’t want to go through with this.” She looked at me with a sad smile. “Would I be crazy if I said I want to keep it? I still don’t understand how it happened in the first place but the more I think about it, I want to go on this journey with you Christian” I placed a kiss to her temple before saying “Don’t worry, I am going to be here with you for every second of it. We will do this together”

Spring 2024: It was a time of activity, it was a time of illness… but ultimately, a time of achievements.

So now, we find ourselves in early 2024. Vev’s 11th bday was more or less a non-event (at his own request) — except for us getting goofy and decorating our house with some salvaged decorations that he shamelessly stole after a work event. They were too perfect for Vev—- Pan Am theme!

(It occurs to me that I didn’t post anything about Dey’s 9th birthday, which was in December 2023. Oops, sorry Dey. Here, let me find a picture. We did celebrate it…somehow 😂)

Ok look - we DID do something. The reason I don’t remember is bc he pretty much tore into those Lego sets and was engrossed in building the entire day. Anyway.

Back to Feb 2024 and onward. The kids had a random half-day of school, and so happened that Dr. Spouse was asked by a local news affiliate to film a news segment on brain health - so I decided to take the kids down to the hospital and get a hands-on lesson on both healthcare and journalism. It was a fun and exciting little field trip!

Somewhere around this time, the kids had their respective Field Days at school. I was room parent for Vev’s room last year along with another friend, so I was heavily involved in organizing his class’ Field Day stuff - but I was on site and cheering for both kids, as was daddice for as much as he could manage.

March rolled in, and alas - minor disaster struck. Vev came down with what we thought was a cold… then he got a fever…and then, he was just very, very sick with flu-like symptoms including HIGH 104+ fevers, severe coughing and respiratory congestion, loss of appetite, and overall misery… for TWO WEEKS STRAIGHT. He missed 10 consecutive days of school and was just miserable for weeks - and we were too. Poor kiddo. I was juggling taking care of Dey, keeping him healthy and getting him off to/from school, along with nursing Vev, escorting him to (nightmarish and fury-inducing) pediatrician appointments (long story), sleeping in his room at night to help him get comfortable, overseeing round the clock meds and nebulizer treatments, and being a go-between for him, his teacher, and the school principal to keep him up to date on work. It was a LOT.

Thankfully, spring break immediately followed his two-week confinement, which gave him more time to recuperate - and even gave us a short getaway to Clearwater Beach for a few days once he was really feeling better.

Soon, it was April, then May. We were busy with lots of activities, including numerous Speech and Debate tournaments, and some medals won! I enjoyed volunteering as a judge for these tournaments. We also took a drive down to Ft. Lauderdale to see one of Vev’s drawings from Art class at school that was featured in a local art show for public school kids.

We had some other ups and downs in this time. Both cars were due for vet checkups….. always a time of hijinks and nerves (more for me than the cats). Pixel in particular had some adventures this year - due to her outstanding behavior 🤪 the vet prescribed her some gabapentin to “help her relax” during her physical exam. She was high as a kite.

An era came to an end. On May 5th, Dr. Spouse’s trusty 2014 Tesla Model S died a sudden and very peaceful (almost suspiciously peaceful) death, parked at the front of the kids’ Kumon center. Though the reality was hard to accept, we soon came to terms that we’d have to trade it in and lease a new car. So we all went to bid a final adieu to Red Flyer, aka “Lightning McQueen,” and welcome home Red Flyer 2.

Then, it was JUNE! And the end of the school year.was upon us. We were VERY proud of Dey for an awesome year at school, and of Vev for completing 5th grade, which in our community is a mini-graduation, as the kids head off to a whole new middle school in the fall!

So! This takes us to June 2024, and the end of the school year. Up next will be a synopsis of Summer 2024, which entailed some exciting travel, a bevy of summer camp adventures, and more. One final thought here - maybe it’s my paranoid mom brain, but I feel like this was a Vev-focused post, and I am concerned it looks like I don’t pay as much attention to Dey. But that couldn’t be further from the truth! Dey is everything, everywhere, all over at once - and even if one wanted to ignore him (which I don’t!) it would be impossible, bc he is a total cartoon, and keeps us laughing nonstop 😜 So I’ll make sure to bump up the Dey content in the next post!

Album Review: ‘The Lower Side of Uptown’ by Toadies

It has been the better part of a decade since the Toadies officially rejoined the land of the living, the past nine years having been their most productive ever in terms of content they’ve released, something that can no doubt be attributed to now having a record label that isn’t overly involved in the creative process and allows the band to make what they want to. That has led to some great albums, from a strong return with 2008’s No Deliverance, to revisiting the stuff of legend by finally releasing Feeler and even a reinterpretation of many of the hits with their most recent record. However, their forthcoming seventh studio album may well take the cake, not only rising above their more recent works but arguably holding its own alongside the classics from one of Fort Worth’s greatest rock outfits. The Lower Side of Uptown (due out on September 8th via Kirtland Records) comes across as being nothing short of a return to form, the Toadies being in touch with those ‘90s rock roots more than they have been since their 1994 release that propelled them to stardom – an album which Vaden Todd Lewis and Mark Reznicek are the only two remaining members who had a hand in making.

The dozen songs found on it harken back to what fans hail as the Toadies best stuff, drawing influence from Rubberneck and even Hell Below/Stars Above, with trace amounts of other eras found in some of the cuts; the quartet immediately placing everyone into the thick of it with “When I Die”. The lengthy, effects laden riff that kicks off the track sounds like it came straight out of the ‘90s and is unmistakably the work of the Toadies. Licks like that were the hallmark of their major label debut, the kind that made it such a definitive piece of work, and now they serve to transport the listener back a couple of decades, “When I Die” feeling like a long-lost song from those days. The rhythm section is just as crucial to it, creating a moody vibe that allows the lyrics to be more emotive, an underlying anger permeating the track, particularly in Lewis’ singing as he snarls out some of the lines. “…So, break my heart! Make me cry! Do your worst!” The onslaught continues with “Take Me Alive”, a piece that is sheer rock ‘n’ roll, the choruses sounding wildly chaotic. Lewis, Reznicek, Clark Vogeler and Doni Blair relish that sudden jolt of energy they inject into the song, sounding ferocious as they let their unbridled passion shine through. It stands as one of the most in-your-face songs that the Toadies have written, one that demands the listener invest themselves completely as they take it in. Still, it isn’t without its signature Toadies’ tones, the verses having an ominous vibe about them, especially the raspy way Lewis belts out the lines. The high-energy may be what makes “Take Me Alive”, though the most gripping moment comes before the final verse, an eerie “Shhhh” quelling the drums, guitar and bass as things momentarily carry on at a whisper. It’s the first you hear something that winds up being a crucial part of every song and overall is defining of The Lower Side of Uptown and that’s the way the music and lyrics truly work off one another to reflect the various emotions that are being conveyed, subsequently making the tracks as potent as possible. The record continues to be utterly compelling with another staple at live shows for the past year or so, “Polly Jean” being a beast of a song. Along with a grungy-esque sound (something that is found in many of the songs) it also boasts some monstrous drumming and the occasional fuzzed out series of riffs that make it a powerhouse number, one that cements the hold The Lower Side of Uptown has started to take, ensuring the listener’s intrigue is piqued as they continue the journey. That journey includes an interesting mix of offerings, “Mama Take Me Home” being a lull of sorts, but one packed with plenty of intense moments that make it rather volatile. “Amen” is another slightly different song. Different in the fact that it feels more like a hybrid between Lewis’ writing style with the Toadies and his venture after. (It could qualify as a B-side for the Burden Brothers’ Mercy.) Dark at times, that track also shimmers, brilliantly so, the glossy tones providing an optimistic feeling… despite some of the somber elements. (And let’s be honest, Lewis is one of the few vocalists who can make the lines, “Cross my heart, hope to die with you by my side. If you run I will find anywhere you hide…”, simultaneously sound tender and loving yet also haunting with malicious intent. Threat like, as if he’d track this love interest to the ends of the earth to ensure HE got what HE wanted. It’s magnificent.) Since reuniting, the Toadies have made a habit of putting a cover song on their records and The Lower Side of Uptown features a riveting rendition of Screamin' Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You”. Complete with keys and a saxophone to make it as authentic as possible, the classic also gets a slight modern makeover. It’s not necessarily adventurous in terms of the music, the instrumentation just sounds fresher, though with a song like this, one really doesn’t need to make much attempt in the first place to enhance it because it already has a certain spark. Instead, it’s the Toadies own flare that makes this cover so bewitching, a cackling Lewis fueling the sentiment behind the words as they work their magic, making it mesmerizing and commanding as it retains its moody aura. The Lower Side of Uptown winds up standing out as the most Toadies thing that the Toadies have ever made. In a sense, it provides a look through the years, various songs fitting with the LP’s that precede this latest one. That includes the five-year-old Play.Rock.Music (another superb album) and everything else since ‘08, but for the most part it’s cast after their most revered records, the only two fans had to enjoy for many years. Because of that, fans will delight in listening to it and hearing something or another that echoes back to other entries in their catalog. Don’t misinterpret that, though. The Lower Side of Uptown is far from a retread of what worked best in the past. Rather, this time around the writing styles -- both in regards to the lyrics and the music -- just happened to line up more with the classic era, the result being stupendous. As was noted, the music and vocals are in constant harmony, thus allowing the music to pack even more of a punch. The forceful swells in the music lead to some ferocious singing; the more tender lines are punctuated by serene notes and so on. Those components operate in perfect concert in order to ensure a brilliant ebb and flow, impressive crescendos and haunting, brooding moments adorning the record, making it as striking as possible. Chocking The Lower Side of Uptown full of the vim and vigor of their youth, Lewis, Reznicek, Vogeler, and Blair have combined that passion with the experience and maturity that has come with growing into seasoned musicians, the final product being something that is sharp (and often vicious). Something that is absolutely engaging from start to finish. Something that, rather than a slow song or two, features a series of temperamental shifts, all of them teeming with feeling and enthusiasm. It’s an album where the Toadies are unquestionably in their prime; and if the listener can remain truly objective, they may well agree this is their most solid effort to date. Singer/songwriter and POND frontman Nick Allbrook takes me backstage before the band's recent LA show to reveal his long-term infatuation with Outkast's 2003 classic 'Love Below', the complex and endlessly inventive record helped teach Nick it was ok to love pop bangers.

We talk about how the album is structured like a concept record, the wonderfully weird production choices, how Andre 3000 and Outkast evolved from their early Atlanta rap days into the genre blending of 'Love Below', the Outkast cover Nick did with Tame Impala on triple J, stories about foisting the record on the Tame boys in their old share house, the pop anxiety some psych fans have about the evolution of Pond's sound and what to expect from the new Pond record.

A Mentally Ill Man in Solitary Cut Off a Body Part at the Broward County Jail Broward County Jail has a sordid history of damage and death due to its dangerously substandard mental health system and unsafe conditions.

Around midnight on Sept. 5, 2018, guards responded to prisoners banging on their cell doors inside a lockdown unit at Broward County Jail’s main facility in downtown Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They went to the solitary cell of J.I.* and made a gruesome discovery.

“I have a real medical emergency,” J.I. told an officer. “I just cut my penis off and flushed it down the toilet. I have no need for it anymore.” J.I. had used a razor blade to cut himself. This grisly act of self-mutilation is just the latest chapter in a series of tragic incidents involving seriously mentally ill prisoners at the jail.

J.I. has a documented history of mental health treatment dating back to 2007. He was booked into the jail in late October 2017. Two months later, he was placed on suicide watch after he told staff he suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and wanted to harm himself. J.I. was prescribed various mental health medications during his jail stay, which he repeatedly refused in the months leading up to his self-mutilation. These included antipsychotics and an antidepressant that could have helped to prevent J.I.’s condition from worsening.

Prior to his placement in solitary confinement, J.I. had begun showing telltale signs of a mental health crisis. J.I. had public masturbatory episodes, and along with his medication refusals, he also refused food.

These signs should have been a red flag to the doctors supposedly overseeing J.I.’s care. Yet his medical record contains few notes or observations from the jail’s mental health staff. As he deteriorated, his treatment plan was not updated, a glaring omission.

J.I. was initially placed in solitary confinement for yelling at staff members. He had been in solitary for over 112 consecutive days at the time of his mutilation.

Prisoners in solitary confinement are isolated, unable to interact with others or participate in daily activities. Instead, men and women in solitary spend their days alone in a cell that is roughly the size of a parking space. It is well recognized that prisoners experiencing these harsh conditions need to be assessed by a mental health professional prior to and during their placement in solitary, as isolation can exacerbate or even cause mental health problems.

None of these safeguards were followed for J.I.

No psychiatrist assessed him prior to his placement in segregation to determine if this placement could be harmful. He was not adequately monitored while in solitary for the four months leading up to his mutilation. The risks to those like J.I. who already have serious mental illness are acute. There is a consensus that those suffering from serious mental illness should be excluded from long-term solitary confinement altogether.

J.I.’s self-mutilation was just the latest in a series of tragic incidents involving seriously mentally ill prisoners at the Broward County Jail.

In 2012, William Herring, a prisoner diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, starved himself to death under the watch of Broward County Jail officials. A few months before Herring’s death, Raleigh Priester also starved to death at the jail.

Priester, too, suffered from schizophrenia, but he was still placed in solitary confinement where his condition deteriorated. Priester began starving himself and the 6-foot-2-inch man’s weight dropped from 240 pounds when he was first arrested to 139 pounds before any emergency medical intervention was undertaken. He was briefly hospitalized, gaining 11.6 pounds in one week. After his return to the jail, Priester died of starvation in his cell weighing 120 pounds. He was in jail for 155 days.

We have an ongoing civil rights lawsuit on behalf of the men, women, and children confined at the Broward County Jail. Just a week before J.I. mutilated himself, a court-appointed psychiatric expert in our case issued a scathing report finding numerous life-threatening deficiencies in mental health services at the jail. These included a failure to exclude seriously mentally ill patients from solitary confinement, to timely treat patients who refused their medications, and to hospitalize those patients who could not be adequately treated at the jail.

The expert concluded that the mistreatment and neglect of those with mental illness at the jail were “absolutely inhumane.”

Following the expert’s report, the parties crafted a comprehensive decree that will remedy the flaws and failures of the jail’s mental health care system. That agreement awaits approval from the presiding federal judge. Under the agreement, seriously mentally ill patients will be excluded from solitary confinement, and individual treatment plans will be developed and implemented for all mental health patients. The most acutely ill patients will be diverted to psychiatric hospitals rather than being warehoused at the jail.

These remedies came too late to prevent the tragedies that befell J.I., Priester, Herring, and too many others. They must be implemented now to prevent future tragedies at the Broward County Jail.

McNair had "dealt with skin cancer for years and had been undergoing more intensive treatment for that illness and other forms of the disease" since 2013, according to the Houston Chronicle. Even while undergoing treatment, McNair "remained a visible part of the team's daily life until his health worsened this year." His wife Janice McNair will "assume the ownership role of the Texans," and their son, Texans Chairman and COO Cal McNair, will be "in charge of daily operations." NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Bob McNair "left a lasting mark on his city and our league." Said Goodell, "[he] cared deeply about the league and was generous with his time and willingness to share his insights as an exceptional businessman." After the Oilers left Houston for Tennessee, McNair secured the 32nd NFL expansion franchise for $600 million and founded the Houston Texans in 1999. He was able to purchase the expansion franchise with the proceeds from his power generator company Cogen Technologies, which he sold to Enron for $1.5 billion in 1999. While the McNair family is adamant that they will remain firmly in control of the Texans, it's worth noting that David Tepper just paid $2.3 billion for the Carolina Panthers -- and everything's bigger in Texas.

The Beach Volleyball Major Series announce that long-time partner AutoNation will be presenting sponsor for the 2019 Fort Lauderdale Major. America’s only five-star beach volleyball tournament of 2019, held February 5-10, will officially be named the Fort Lauderdale Major Presented by AutoNation. Merely a week after rumors broke regarding a potential new Super League in Europe, two of the continent’s most powerful soccer officials shot down the idea as “fiction.” According to the BBC, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin and European Club Association Chair Andrea Agnelli were united on the topic. "The Super League will not happen,” said Ceferin. “It is in a way a fiction now or a dream.” Agnelli, who is also chair of Italian giant Juventus, added to those comments. "I can confirm we have never seen, never discussed, never been involved in the creation of this document,” he noted. “We are fully engaged with UEFA in shaping the game going forward.” The league would effectively replace the Champions League, with 11 of the competition’s 16 clubs being mainstays with the five others invited as annual guests. A completely separate new 32-team competition is expected to be “rubber-stamped” next month at the UEFA meeting, though the Super League is clearly out of the question, at least for now.

The Zozo Championship is preparing to debut next year as Japan’s first-ever PGA Tour event. According to the Japan Times, Zozo, “one of the fastest growing online business companies in the country, will title sponsor the 78-player tournament October 24-27. Zozo is planning to bring a unique twist to the golf event, though details have not yet been released. “We are a company that deals with fashion and IT,” said Zozo Founder and President Yusaku Maezawa. “We would like to abundantly use those for the tournament, making it a fashionable and technological (event), something the world has not seen before.” The Zozo Championship is set to replace the CIMB Classic in Malaysia and is part of the PGA Tour’s "swing through Asia along with stops in South Korea and China.” Bringing a professional golf event of this stature to Japan is “driven partly” by the 2020 Tokyo Games and the sport’s high profile in the country. From the sound of it, the Zozo Championship will take a page from the playbooks of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, which have both long blended sport and fashion within the tennis realm.

Capital One’s The Match: Tiger vs. Phil was as much a “production-technology showcase” as it was a golf match on Black Friday. The $9 million one-on-one showdown in Las Vegas featured some of the sport’s most revolutionary technology. Before the match, Turner Sports claimed it would introduce “first-of-its-kind integrations centered on predictive data, camera angles delivered by drone and live betting odds during a marquee sporting event for the first time (for U.S. viewers); TopTracer shot tracking (showing real-time trajectory and flight path) and Virtual Eye real-time animations will also be used during the broadcast.” The predictive data that viewers saw throughout the match was generated directly from an algorithm combining ShotLink Intelligence (an “archive with insight/analysis of every shot hit during tour play”) with unique characteristics of Shadow Creek, Las Vegas — the course where event was held. Unfortunately, the technology that broke down for Turner and its carriage partners was the ability to actually deliver the match digitally to paid subscribers, resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in refunds issued to angry golf fans.

JLL expands venue engineering services with Audi Field assignment. The global commercial real estate firm will partner with D.C. United to provide engineering services and ongoing maintenance at the new 20,000 seat-capacity stadium, opened July 2018 near Nationals Park at Buzzard Point. “Operating a sports and entertainment venue, while unique, is like operating and managing any other real estate asset,” stated Megan O’Hara Pawlowski, Senior Vice President, JLL, Venue Engineering Services. “From seamlessly integrating our staff at the venue to implementing best practices for efficiencies and green operating practices, the JLL Venue Engineering Services team works diligently to showcase the very best of our venue assets from Day One. We’re ecstatic to partner with D.C. United at Audi Field to give the teams and fans an experience unlike any other in Major League Soccer.” The new stadium will comprise 550 field-level seats and 1,500 club seats, all of which will be maintained by JLL. JLL will undoubtedly bring their vast knowledge from working at Capital One Arena and Kettler IcePlex to the Audi Field assignment, in a move that’s sure to benefit the entire D.C. sports facility landscape.

The United States Supreme Court has legalized sports gambling, and the United Kingdom is exploring measures of its own. According to JohnWallStreet, the board of the Remote Gambling Association recently met to discuss the matter of self-regulation, “a pre-emptive attempt to stave off industry crippling government legislation within the U.K.” Mobile and digital gambling have boomed as of late in the United Kingdom, spurring a massive spike in gambling-related sporting betting advertisements during matches and on soccer club’s jerseys, as bookmakers increasingly compete for more market share. “If the gaming companies won’t self-govern, perhaps the media companies selling the spots will follow Sky’s lead and do it for them,” JohnWallStreet added. Sky Sports reportedly earns around $262 million per year in advertising money from licensed sports books, so it remains to be seen whether or not the network would impose any kind of a ban.

The MLS season is right in the thick of its playoffs, but Commissioner Don Garber and other MLS leaders are already looking toward significant changes to next year’s schedule. According to The Athletic, one of the biggest changes would see the regular season shortened in conjunction with “a more measured playoff schedule.” The current MLS schedule sees the regular season go from March until October, followed by a six-week playoff leading up to the MLS Cup Final in December. The "tentative plan would see the MLS final played before the November international break." Though specific dates have not been disclosed, playing the MLS Cup final prior to the international break would “likely set the final” somewhere between November 8-15, depending on the year. Sources confirmed that the regular season "would end prior to the October international break," with "Decision Day" in 2019 being held October 6. Another significant change that is expected to be made is the removal the home-and-away legs in favor of single elimination during the playoffs. This schedule, however, could be problematic in 2022: the FIFA World Cup in Qatar that year is set to kick off on November 21.

The Phoenix Suns are in the process of sourcing money to fund a major renovation of Talking Stick Resort Arena. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the Phoenix City Council could vote on a deal as early as next month concerning renovations needed to modernize the 27-year-old facility. The city could contribute as much as $150 million, with the Suns putting up another $80 million, as reported by a source close to the deal. Both the city and the Suns declined to comment on the matter, noting that discussions are strictly confidential at this point. However, “Interim Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams and city execs are looking to finalize a deal before a new mayor is elected in March.” Funding for the renovation has been discussed for three years now, with no definitive answer coming from the talks yet. And as the Journal article states, “The team has not been interested in sharing a renovated or new arena with the Coyotes, who have been looking to move out of Gila River Arena in Glendale.” A downtown arena continues to make sense for the franchise, as it does for most NBA and NHL teams.

The NFL will return to Mexico City next season despite this year’s last-minute audible. According to the Associated Press, the “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams was pulled out of Mexico due to poor field conditions. But the NFL has already stated its intention to return next season. If the game had been played there, it would have marked the third straight year that a regular-season game was played at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Shortly after the game, which had been moved to Los Angeles, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Mexico President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador met and "confirmed" the 2019 game. The date of the game and the participating teams "won't be known until the league's 2019 schedule is released in the spring.” Earlier this year, the league announced an extensive partnership with the Mexico Ministry of Tourism to stage an annual game south of the border through 2021. While this “football diplomacy” won’t directly ease current border tensions in Tijuana caused by the Honduran migrant influx there, the goodwill from America’s private sector may ultimately influence the Mexican government to better cooperate with the Trump administration on this issue, and on others.

As St. Louis continues to push forward with its MLS bid, a group of city aldermen is urging the soccer team partners “to own their proposed stadium.” According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, this news comes as the “first wrinkle in the city’s effort to land a MLS team.” The biggest issue with St. Louis’s bid has been funding a soccer-specific stadium, with the public reluctant to contribute millions of dollars to the cause. “We've been burned a couple of times before,” said Alderman Christine Ingrassia on the matter. “I think they should own it.” Another alderman in the city expressed a similar concern. “The city should not be in the business of owning stadiums,” said Tower Grove South alderman Megan Green. “We have shown time and time again that it has not worked out for taxpayers.” MLS is expected to announce the next expansion club in the first part of 2019, though no details regarding the selected city have been revealed yet. It certainly doesn’t help the St. Louis MLS bid group’s funding argument that the Rams left the city with a white elephant stadium and an estimated $144 million in debt and maintenance costs when they departed St. Louis for Los Angeles in 2016.

Boxing could be absent from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics if the IOC decides to expel AIBA, boxing’s international federation. According to the New York Times, the IOC could make such a move following Gafur Rakhimov’s election as AIBA president. Rakhimov is described by the U.S. Treasury Department as “one of Uzbekistan’s leading criminals.” The IOC “will decide at a meeting on December 1 whether to cast out AIBA.” If it does, the IOC will “have to scramble to organize an Olympic boxing competition for the Tokyo Games that the boxing federation has not sanctioned.” The IOC is already working toward a solution to get boxing in the Olympics, acting under the assumption that AIBA will be expelled by the end of the year. A source said it would take "something earth shattering" for the AIBA to not be thrown out. Need help with my car insurance. . . ?

i need some help cos i'm pretty confused so i bought a car at the start of the year, took out a loan to get it, etc and I have been having no problems paying it off so that was going fine. than two months ago i had a huge crash which totalled my car. It wasn't deemed my fault or the other person's fault. I did have full comprehensive insurance, but i missed two payments. I remember recieving a letter saying if i kept missing these payments then my insurance would be cancelled. Than when i put my claim in to get my insurance on my car through after the crash, they said i had recieved a letter syaing that my insurance had been cancelled due to lack of payments. I'm confused, i didn't get that letter. now, i have no car and am still paying off that loan. Is there any way I can fix this. I don't think i would be able to get another loan for another car, and i don't want to put myself into that much debt, but i really do need a car help?!?!?!""

Hey Guys, I'm a new driver (23 yo) who has a 3rd party fire & theft policy under Kwik Fit Insurance. I went for this policy pretty much because it was the cheapest because I'd spent all my money on the car, haha! After a couple of months I've finally managed to sort my finances out and I'm ready to upgrade to fully comp. I drive around 30 miles a day to work and back and would just like that little extra knowledge that incase anything does happen. So I email KwikFit (who take 2 weeks to get back!!) to ask them what the deal is. How do I do this? To my dismay, I got the following email back: In response to your email, I can confirm that your policy can only be upgraded if you are making another permanent change to your policy eg a change of vehicle/address/driver, alternatively your policy would need to be replaced to another insurer. Are they within their rights to do this? Surely upgrading to fully comp means an extra wad of money from me monthly? Thanks :-)""
