like now i’m thinking about this old wattpad story i had formulated when i was 12 that was your typical run-of-the-mill paranormal werewolf romance, but i spent the entire prologue (which was the only piece of the story i ever actually wrote) explaining how the world received the news of the existence of werewolves, witches, and vampires and the immediate bigotry and political issues that sprung up in the aftermath, and thinking back to that impulse now, it’s really crazy because that’s usually the area where paranormal romance writers fail the most abysmally with their world-building. how come that genre doesn’t explore more the logistics of how our everyday would react or adapt to the existence of paranormal beings? one of the only urban fantasy series i respect does a great job handling worldbuilding (kate daniels), but every other one is like “i dunno they turn into wolves on command and have mates and have hot animalistic sex” and if there isn’t that, then we have J.K. “Werewolves have AIDS” Rowling.
and i think the reason why urban fantasy and paranormal romance is more interesting to me than your typical high fantasy or scifi is because the former genres are taking our current, real world and introducing magical, supernatural elements to it, rather that discarding our reality wholesale to make a completely new one. like i love my fair share of fantasy novels (and a FEW scifi), but i think too often authors take the typical atmosphere of a fantasy novel and build their story off that, so all the dialogue and styling and even stuff as major as political worldbuilding feels stale. like why are there always monarchies? why does everyone seem like they speak with a british accent? why are we perpetually in medieval england? (seraphina is probably the best example of why fantasy can get incredibly boring if you copy-paste the typical formula and have nothing new to offer). obviously paranormal romance and urban fantasy suffers from similar issues of tropes and formulaic writing, but at the very least they kind of play into the question of “wouldn’t it be cool if this stuff was real?”
even harry potter, which in one fell swoop boosted all genres of fantasy to the mainstream while encouraging an entire generation of the most insufferable nerds to be even more unbearable, dealt with this question of “what if there was a magical world within our own?”, though the way it answered this question was maybe the weakest point of rowling’s worldbuilding (and that’s saying a lot because she was really awful at it). but at least that question was there! there’s something very compelling about reading characters that look and talk and think like you, that grew up in a world very close to your own, except now there’s magic. there’s this crazy tech or some other fantastical element they are also dealing with, and i think it’s a harder job to write a modern-day character handling out-of-this-world stuff than it is to write your typical high-fantasy scifi-soldier type dealing with the same things -- but for me at least it’s more rewarding, because it feels less remote.
#p#anyways this will be my draft for my final paper for my adventure & fantasy class#only half joking lksjfgdh;fslg#anyways it's funny to see how the quality of my writing shoots up immediately after reading a single essay by le guin#by tomorrow morning i'll be back on my bullshit

5, 6, and 20 for the meta ask 👀
thank you for the ask, @mikamoony! I'm happy to answer under the cut because I love writing essays about myself!
(spoilers for my fic "aftermath" if you're following me and reading these answers and haven't read it. if you haven't, how the hell did you find my little tumblr blog?)
5. What character that you're writing do you most identify with?
That's actually really hard to answer! My first instinct is to say Link, because for all of the words I spit out on the internet I'm actually pretty quiet in person! One of my friends once told me they were scared of me because they like to talk/talk a lot and I don't, so they'll just be talking about whatever I'm just, like, sitting there and staring at them? Not saying anything in response to what they say and just nodding for them to continue? and the truth of it is I just really like listening! I like hearing my friends talk! So I feel like I can relate to Link in the sense that I don't always have to be talking to enjoy people's presence/be present and stuff like that, not necessarily that I'm pressuring myself to be silent. and I am also in love with Zelda.
6. What character do you have the most fun writing?
Funny thing, I answered this question in the ask I just responded to before this one, so instead of repeating myself in talking about how fun Zelda is I'm gonna talk about her dad.
I love writing Rhoam, he's so complex I have to stare at my screen for like five minutes whenever he comes up to try and imagine what the hell is going on in his head. In the pre-calamity fic, "a memory of younger days", especially in the most recent chapter, you can kind of see that he does know how to be a good father, that he does know Zelda is trying her best, but he's got the end of the world looming over his head and his currently-Triforceless daughter is the only person who can stop it. how else is he supposed to help her save the world if he isn't breathing down her neck about prayer?
and then in the zelink amnesia fic, "that parting need not last forever (it's dangerous to go alone)", he's a cryptid. he's just an old man who's been on this plateau for years; "no, my daughter and her knight, I don't know shit about you two. want some treasure?". it's almost funny how vague he is because he's trying so hard not to say anything but also trying so hard to figure out why the hell his daughter has amnesia and isn't in the castle and he wants to hug her so bad and tell her how sorry he is for being shitty dad it's his second chance she's right there-
but she's not. Zelda's not his daughter anymore, she's some girl with amnesia clinging to the boy she woke up with, and that's why I love writing Rhoam. the "but" is who he is (pun not intended sldkfjd;fslg) and it's so good to explore.
20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you've included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
I've answered this one, already, too, but no worries! There's SO many things I want to talk about! In the other ask, I talked about the relationship between Zelda and Ganondorf in "aftermath", but for this one I want to talk about that fic's plot and more specifically the clues to Zelda holding Power. I apologize in advance, this is a long one!
The hints start all the way back in chapter two, "old friends", when Zelda gets scared awake by the Sheikah appearing in front of them when she and Link get to Kakariko:
"On instinct, Link reaches back and draws the Master Sword, and the sound of the glowing blade being freed from its scabbard wakes Zelda, who bolts upright and holds out her right hand. Her trembling fingertips turn gold, the Triforce blazing over her knuckles, but then it all fades and she sags, chest heaving."
As we learn later on, Power is triggered by anger and fear. Zelda getting jumpscared by the Master Sword made her afraid, which then makes her Power show up. At the same time, it's also just that using her magic has become her first instinct when she's afraid after using it when she's afraid for a hundred years. It's the little things that count!
Then in chapter seven, "thinking", when Link gets back from fighting off the corrupted Guardians and monsters on Blatchery Plain, when he and Zelda argue outside the Hateno shrine:
“Do you have any idea how afraid I was?!” she starts, voice high and echoing. “Sending me away like that when I could have helped you-!”
He thinks she looks like Rhoam when she’s angry. “I was keeping you safe-"
The golden glow crawls up her arms and slides down her legs, engulfing her feet in her sandals. “You could have given me the Sheikah Slate and I could have used the runes-"
And then a few seconds later after she says the fuck word:
"She’s glowing from head to toe, a beacon in the dark, panting. The ends of her blonde hair float off her shoulders and a low hum resonates from the Triforce blazing on the back of one of her clenched, shaking fists. Her green eyes are glassy, and her bottom lip trembles."
The golden glow, the Triforce, Power, only goes away once she calms down and collects herself. She's stopped being afraid/angry, so Power isn't needed anymore.
And then, of course, Ganondorf shows up and starts causing drama. I actually throw it in your face in chapter nine, "zelda (open your eyes)", when Zelda has a nightmare about him:
"'No,' she says. I know. 'I unlocked my power because I love him-'
It laughs, letting her go. 'And does he love you?'
You fulfilled your purpose, too.
I haven’t, Zelda. My purpose is you.
'No,' she repeats, weaker. Link believes he’s just her knight. He has no idea how wrong he is. 'He doesn’t. He doesn’t remember me.'
It gives her an ugly grin. 'Courage need not be remembered, for it is never forgotten.'
She flinches.
The Calamity leans in like it’s going to kiss her. Instead, it rests its lips along the shell of her ear, curving them into another wicked smile as it breathes, 'You could say the same about Power.'
It puts its hand over her heart and the Triforce glows on its knuckles and she cries out as pure, scorching hatred fills her body-"
It works really well on re-read because the first time it's just fake/nightmare Ganondorf saying shit, it's not even the "real" Ganondorf showing up like he does later and causing problems, but the second time through it's like, "oh. oh SHIT". foreshadowing, baby!
then of course in Zora's Domain when Zelda goes off on Dorephan:
"Zelda’s entire body is glowing, the Triforce blazing on the back of her right hand. Rays of yellow light peek out from her clothes.
'Because he is the Hero,' she says, fists clenched and shaking at her sides. 'And I am the Goddess Incarnate.'"
and then when she and Link are heading towards Death Mountain and Ganondorf shows up a second time (there were actually no real hints I was going for in his first appearance at the Spring of Wisdom, I was just introducing the concept of him popping up and the mystery of "why is he here"):
"'I told Sidon last night that I couldn’t summon the power at will,” she whispers. “and that even if I could I wouldn’t do anything. So I thought I would interrupt Dorephan and tell him the same thing, show him that I was harmless by failing to summon it, but then he started to attack you. He started to doubt you, and I-'
She squeezes his fingers. The power crawls up to her shoulders and warmth flushes her limbs.
'It came to me like it had on Blatchery Plain when you fell, like it had when I held back the Calamity, and like it had when I sealed it. It was more than that, and I lost my temper. My civil, diplomatic idea dissolved as I started to just…talk.'
(Tearing into Dorephan like that, watching him cower before her rage as the power flooded her system, felt good. It felt borderline therapeutic.)
'He needed to hear it like that,' Link insists. 'You weren’t wrong for getting angry.'
'But I don’t know why I got so angry,' she looks at him. 'Do you-'
Then there's this line from Ganondorf in chapter twenty-seven, "zelda (no human or demon)":
“'Look at you,' he whispers, all amusement gone. 'All of that raw, destructive power, and you have absolutely no control.'"
and this from chapter thirty "zelda (curse you)":
"She stares at Link, focusing on the warmth of his hand in hers, thinking of how he had kissed her just an hour or two ago and of the fluttering she had felt in her stomach. She thinks of the way he talks, the way he laughs, and the way he smiles. She thinks of the way he cares for her, even when he doesn’t have to. She thinks of the way he makes her happy, and of the way he makes her happy to be alive.
'I love you,' she whispers to him, not caring that he can’t hear her. 'I love you.'
The back of her hand does not tingle or itch. She does not glow gold. The Triforce does not blaze on her knuckles.
(Wisdom does not answer her call.)"
and then, finally, the very last, very in-your-face clue, comes from chapter thirty-two, "wrath":
"Zelda stands with her back to him, her hair floating around her head like tendrils. Staring directly at her hurts, but if Link squints hard enough he can see that her left hand hangs by her side, and that she holds her right hand up, but it’s different. Whenever she uses her power, she always reaches towards her target, fingers splayed, and pushes the light forward with her palm.
Now, she holds her right hand differently. It looks as if she’s flexing, her fist clenched tightly before her face as an even brighter light emanates from the back of her hand-
(Link sees a Gerudo man with red hair and grayish, green skin sitting on an ornate throne. He holds his fist before his face like he’s flexing, the Triforce blazes on his knuckles, and he cackles as the floor crumbles beneath their feet.)"
and then three chapters later we get our reveal! dropping these breadcrumbs was the hardest thing to do about "aftermath", and while I'm not surprised some people called it beforehand (it was actually a good thing they did, it let me know it would make sense when the reveal did drop), the reactions from people who didn't figure it out and were theorizing what it was until the reveal were so good. It let me know I could pull off a little mystery!

Ever since i know fslg is going to get a chapter update by the end of the month (i'm so hyped you wouldn't believe😁) i resorted to count the days like a little kid waiting for Christmas to come... 😅
And see that gave me an idea why not make an advent calender assassination classroom style so i've started counting on the 11th (i drew it today so i needed to catch up first 😅) and each day i draw a tentacle that spells something out (can you take a guess @superanimeidiot😏😉) or an characters face on one of the boards
All tencales will be finished on 25th (it's kinda hard making an advent calender when you don't know the official date so if it not updated by then i'm going to colour the drawing day by day or something *shrugs*)

Do you have an update schedule for the final part of fslg or is it just kinda random?🤔
I do, actually! I plan on updating sometime during the last week of every month. The next chapter is mostly finished and should be out on time. :D
