Summary: Second Chapter with OC. After receiving papers about the FSBP (Faculty Social Bonding Program) and that she is paired with Toshinori she decides to meet with him briefly to see if he received the same thing.

Sareen arrived early to work that day. The reason? She wanted to catch Toshinori to see if he was aware of the “Faculty Social Bonding Program [FSBP]” and that they had been paired together. Yesterday had been a difficult day for her and his words were what got her through the tumultuous emotions she was feeling. She was hopeful about the program.

Pushing open the door to the computer lab, she was pleased to see him sitting at one of the computers. He glanced her way, a tight but friendly smiles across his lips as she took a seat beside him. Her nerves were reminded her they were there.

“Do you have a moment?” she asked him softly.

Toshinori addressed her warmly. There was a hint of sincerity in his voice as he asked what he could do for her.

“Have you received one of these yet?” she asks less confidently than she’d have liked, holding up her manila envelop.

His eyes flicked to the envelop and back to her, “Ahh… Yes. The ‘Bonding Program’” he stated with growing amusement. “I guess we are partners, hm?”

She nodded at him, the smile on her lips turning more genuine. “So it would seem. I just wanted to know if you were aware of it.”

His chuckle was a pleasant sound that filled the quiet room and earned a few looks from other faculty members nearby. “I am aware, but I find it amusing to see this program’s interpretation of ‘bonding.’”

She felt her cheeks burn slightly with his reply. “I didn’t think it was all bad,” she murmured quietly.

The smile on his lips grew into a playful smirk. “Oh? So you’re happy about it?”

She felt a bit nervous revealing that she actually was so she tried to respond in a more neutral manner. “I’m not opposed to it...from the perspective of a new colleague, I thought it was kind of nice.”

His features softened a bit, conceding to her view as he leaned back in his chair. “That makes sense. It’s not a bad idea, I just don’t care for being partnered with someone randomly. Having no choice at all seems a little silly.”

Cocking her head slightly she asked him, “Do you not believe Principal Nezu would put together partners he felt would work best?”

A thin brow raised as Toshinori considered her words and he couldn’t help the ironic laugh that came out. “I have no doubt that Nezu thinks he has a method to his pairings. He is highly intelligent, but I’m not too keen on being assigned a partner without having a say in the matter. He leaned forward as he rested his elbows on the table. She was struck at how large his hands were. “It would just be nice to have the option of choice so you could choose someone you know you work well with.”

She considered his words, but she couldn’t deny she was feeling a bit defensive. “Do you know the new hires well enough to choose one of them?”

“Truthfully?” he sighed, “No, not really. I haven’t interacted with them all. They all look to be capable employees, but I’m not sure I’d call them ‘good partners.’

“And that is why I can understand why Nezu chose the partners. Having hired the new staff he knows them better than anyone else which would provide him with a good sense of whom would work best with whom,” she stated before adding, “I can’t help but get the feeling you are kind of missing the entire point of the program.”

He blinked in surprise. The annoyance and sarcasm in his voice was unmistakable as he pointedly asked her, “And in your opinion, what is the entire point?”

His reaction took her by surprise, it was so different than anything she had seen from him.

Sareen finally sighed at him. “I feel like an outsider. After what happened yesterday I am already a wreck. I was actually kind of excited to have someone that… maybe I could connect with and ask questions if needed.” She found herself unable to meet his gaze so she looked away towards the window.

“I see. That’s understandable.” He leaned closer with a guilty look on his face. “This is your first year teaching here, isn’t it?”

Her eyes flicked at him, her voice flat, “I’ve literally been here for one week.”

The guilty look took over his features entirely. “Ahh.. I didn’t realize you were that new.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I didn’t intend to come off as unsupportive. Are you doing alright?”

His response irritated her. Raising a brow at him she asked sharply, “Now you’re concerned?”

It was easy to see the wince that flashed across his face, shoulders deflating. “I … ahh… wasn’t really thinking when I made that comment. It was insensitive. I don’t want you to feel like an outsider.”

Her eyes followed him as his hand combed through his hair, a heavy sigh coming from him. Inside she just wanted to cry, however she attempted to mask it with anger.

“Do you have a better understanding of the program now?” she retorted.

His features greatly softened and he seemed to be truly sincere in that moment. “I do. I realize now that Nezu is trying to help foster a bond to create connections, support… friendship.”

“I’m glad you figured it out,” she said, her frustration apparent. With a frown on her face, trying not to tear up in front of him, she got up. As she walked out of the computer lab she could hear him moving to get up, but she kept going.

Sareen knew she should’ve stayed and talked it out with him. That would’ve been the mature thing to do. Unfortunately this tendency to walk away when upset, particularly when it involved her personal feelings, was par for the course. It was a bad habit that she wanted to break, but it was so difficult to in the moment. She also knew that they’d see each other again at the end of that day for the first assignment in the social bonding program.
