#fs: gio

[doedipus]

the next big strive patch is coming up, so obviously another round of buffs for gio are in order. at this point she's a very solid character with few glaring weaknesses, but here's some areas still ripe for development:

defense

as it stands, gio's defense is slightly below average. this is probably her weakest aspect currently.

prior to the mid season 3 patch, gio's cartwheel had a frame 1 low profile, which allowed her to wriggle out of oki situations that other characters had to hold, including an awful lot of safejumps. this was kind of absurd, but it also balanced out her 6p being too slow to abare with in many situations where that's the intended play, such as interrupting foudre arc, as well as being difficult to use on reaction generally. in addition, in the prior patch cartwheel had it's moonshot counterhit launch arc removed, so it doesn't lead to combos outside of the corner.

while 6p and cartwheel are underwhelming as defensive options, her p buttons are solid abare at very short ranges, at 4 and 5 frames. however, she lacks any further special considerations that would make her especially slippery

to compensate, here's some options for improving her defense:

take a frame off of something. 5p becomes 3 frames or 2k becomes 5 frames would be my picks.

exaggerate the low profile on 2k. as-is, 2k low profiles a small set of buttons like nago fs, but a more pronounced low profile along the lines of jackie or testament's would let her use it as abare more safely.

give 6p the full low profile faster. gio's 6p has a great hitbox and long activity, but manages to be difficult to use anyway due to how slow the low profile is. presumably this was meant to counterbalance the instant low profile on the old cartwheel, but she doesn't have that anymore, so more standard frame data would be in order.

reduce horizontal blowback on cartwheel. the threat of getting sent into the sun from a successful antiair cartwheel has largely been transferred to chave cartwheel, but this leaves gio with relatively weak punishes. a cartwheel launch that let her follow up more consistently would make her more threatening

make the cs hitbox a bit taller. let her do some millia shit.

combo physics

gio has good combos. however the physics they depend on are capricious at the best of times, and any extended juggles are prone to dropping. at this point a lot of that is down to correctly choosing 214s vs chave 214s, and that's fine, but there's some other wonkiness left over still.

besides tweaking the math behind the curtain, here's some things that might make her combos more reliable:

extend the cs hitbox slightly behind gio, or give it some slight crossup tracking. as-is, she's prone to facing the wrong way after landing from 214s (or in other situations where the opponent passes above her head) and whiffing cs. more consistency here would be huge

extend the hitbox of ventania upwards slightly. midscreen juggle combos tend to leave opponents slightly too high or too far for ventania to connect, which is really frustrating and definitely hasn't lost me multiple tournament sets

offense

giovanna's offense is generally strong, but she still has a few weird weak points

2d is obviously pretty good as an extended poke in neutral, but in pressure it's kind of infuriating. there's a 5 frame gap between 5k/2k and 2d, meaning that it won't catch jumping from any character. tightening this to 3 frames would be a huge help.

all of her specials lose to 6p except a precise frametrap with 214k or 623s. altering any of her regular or chave specials to hit the ground would make her offense much more stable.

chave is bad in pressure. chave specials are good in combos or as oki, but chave itself is a fixed duration spent in counterhit state, and all of the followups lose to fuzzy mashed 6p, so very rarely is it a good idea to fish for chave cartwheel counterhits, for instance. removing the counterhit state on chave or making a special move hit the ground reliably would amend this somewhat

on the same note, currently chave 214k (the roundhouse kick) is borderline unused at any level of play, and probably requires reworking. the intended use is to exit pressure safely against characters it's difficult to rps with after regular 214k, however you never actually want to enter chave rps due to complaints above, so you won't be able to condition opponents into respecting it. it's also basically a punt, which can be useful, but you don't actually want to do that very often, and it's not worth the threat of getting counterhit.

solutions: make some special or chave special hit the ground to codify the rps more. alternatively, give chave 214k an interesting combo property, like high damage, wall or floor bounces, or being a more advantageous ender

give jh slightly more active frames. it's annoying that you can backdash out of her safejumps! every time! for free! make her hit that shit! this, whether big arrow is meaty, and the jumpable gap in 2k/2d would be crushing weaknesses that would send her to bottom tier if people knew!!!!!!! but nobody does??????

insane crackpot bullshit

make air 214s fall to ground level from any height, making it a mobility tool or anti-anti-air similar to something like ram's sildo detruo or a diet tempestade.

give her a unique melty blood throw where she can move forward a short distance to correct for her abnormally short throw range. alternatively, give her a big body throw.

make the frame advantage on her normals better. at launch she was a funny frame data character, but due to power creep, things like a plus on block cs aren't unique anymore. having safer normals would make her stagger pressure much more threatening. I'm thinking p and k buttons are even on block, 2h is no worse than -3, 5h is -4, and 6p is no worse than -5. gio should only be especially vulnerable when going for big gambles.

make regular cartwheel a real reversal.

make 6p a low to strengthen the strike/throw after dash 5k. if that's too dumb, give her a 6k low instead.

give chave guard point. fuck you.

As much as I want to believe Dio’s genes will pop out and make Giorno a sex beast when he’s older, I just think the boy has too much Jonathan in him. A vanilla boy all the way. You’d certainly have to toss him over your shoulder if you wanted any real action. 

I honestly believe canon Giorno would find sex ahem useless. Giorno has done nothing in his life that isn’t part of his ultimate goal, so what use does he have for sex? He would see it as a nuisance, an unnecessary divergence from his dream. As Don he’d have neither the time nor the patience for such distractions. Perhaps he’d eventually want to have children to leave his legacy, but even that would just be copulation for the sake of procreating. 

So, I’d love Don Giorno to rail me in theory, letting go of his serious persona while rearranging my insides, but in practice that seems to be just wishful thinking.

i.

The first time Elia kissed a boy, he didn’t get a name. He, Martino, and Giovanni headed down to the skate park after classes, even though Gio was the only one in the group proficient at the pastime. They planned to record stories for Instagram. While filming Gio performing tricks on his phone, Elia caught the eye of a boy with curly black hair working the halfpipe and felt his breath catch in his throat. 

It wasn’t like Elia hadn’t ever looked at boys before, because he certainly had, but this time was different than the others. The boy wore a royal blue jacket over a loose-fitting gray t-shirt. His hair whipped in the wind as he skated. Elia took in the details one by one, memorizing them to the best of his ability. The boy cuffed his jeans at the bottom. He wore knee pads but not a helmet or anything on his elbows. When he smiled, he revealed a set of shiny white teeth that could put the sun to shame. The boy performed what Gio would call an FS Disaster, although Elia only recognized it as a difficult kind of jump, landed, and looked back at Elia directly.

At that point, Elia didn’t know what he felt about the situation. He stuck around anyway after Gio and Marti left. At the end of two hours alone, when the sun had gone down and the rest of the skaters had headed home, the boy came over and sat down beside him on the bench. They hardly spoke. When their lips connected, it didn’t feel bad, so Elia didn’t stop him. 

Thirty minutes. At least. Elia found his hands tangled in the boy’s hair, grasping at his jacket, wrapped around his neck. When the boy got up to leave, he wanted to stop him... but who could be sure it was what he really wanted? Perhaps the night air was making him think irrationally, or the fact that this was his first was making him sentimental. He let the boy go.

But he started cuffing his jeans.

ii.

The second time Elia kissed a boy, neither one of them got to keep the memory. He met Hugo outside of Edoardo’s party at three in the morning, drunk out of his mind and bumping into everything. The other boy wasn’t in a much better way, and despite their efforts to get each other to the bus station, they ended up stumbling down the street to take a long way home.

Hugo was a pretty blond, the kind of guy that looked out of place no matter where he was, which was why Elia found himself drawn to him in the first place when he saw him on Edo’s porch. He had a peppering of freckles across the bridge of his nose, like he spent a lot of time on holiday somewhere sunny, fingers meant for playing the piano, and a style of dress that gelled with no one else’s. He laughed loudly, unapologetically. If the circumstances had involved less alcohol between them, things might have developed into more.

They walked most of the way back to Elia’s house passing a bottle of vodka back and forth between them. There was a conversation, although not coherent. Hugo asked about Elia’s family, his earring, and his friends. Elia answered the questions and shot back his own. When they finished the first bottle, Elia produced his backup flask to share once more. 

As they arrived outside Elia’s apartment, Hugo leaned in. Elia had kissed a lot of sloppy girls before, but had never been so sloppy himself, and the whole thing felt more like a scene from a horror movie than a kiss goodnight. He didn’t mind so much.

When he awoke the next morning, he couldn’t remember anything from the night before. All he knew was that he felt happy. For a reason he couldn’t quite express, he felt he had to come out to the boys that same week.

iii.

The third time Elia kissed a boy, he didn’t get to savor the moment. He came to the event with a girl he liked a lot, with whom he thought he might want something official. She walked away from him within the first ten minutes, leaving him to scan the party for Gio and Eva making out in the corners or Marti and Nico taking shots at the bar.

In the midst of his search, he spotted Marco D’Adaggio across the dance floor. 

There’s always that first crush that makes you realize you’re bisexual, and for Elia, it had been Marco. Marco made him appreciate the veins in boys’ hands. Marco made him wonder at the sharpness of a boy’s jawline. He’d sent thousands of fleeting glances in Marco’s direction during class, over and over for a good three months the previous year. The possibility of reciprocated feelings hit him hard; no boy he’d ever pursued had ended up in a lasting relationship with him. He looked, and found his girl was at the bar making out with Chicco Rodi. So he crossed the floor.

Marco was a black-haired, blue-eyed wonderboy who could pull off a leather jacket with Doc Martins and still didn’t look too hipster. When they kissed in the back room that night, it was almost everything Elia imagined kissing was supposed to be. Hands in each other’s hair. Lips trailed along collarbones. Breathing, gasping, breathing. Perfect.

Marco leaned in close, so Elia could feel breath on his neck, and said, “We can keep this going, so long as you don’t tell anyone.”

And then it wasn’t perfect. Elia wasn’t about to be anyone’s secret. He left the bar by himself immediately afterward, without the girl he brought and without seeing any of his friends. 

Marco didn’t try to call him.

iv.

The fourth time Elia kissed a boy, it happened in the light of day, on a swing, with no alcohol coursing through his veins or weed pumping at his heart.

After months of seeing Filippo across parties, he’d gotten the nerve to approach him alone for a chat on the couch. It was nice, Elia felt, to have someone to talk to who understood him. Without an agenda. Without needing to be drunk. Without being a stranger or a secret or assertive. When talking became a normality, and there weren’t enough parties to do it consistently, Elia invited Filippo to hang out with their friends. The older boy was practically a part of the crew before Elia decided to hang out with him on his own.

And then, in the park, on a warm summer day where the light shone off of Filippo’s hair and glinted off his piercings, everything fell right into place where it was supposed to be. Elia’s eyes locked on the cognac-brown of Filippo’s, and they both knew what they wanted to happen. They kissed. 

It might have been the fourth time Elia kissed a boy, but it felt like the first. Never before had he felt this much with a person-- not with the skater boy, not with wasted Hugo, not with picture-perfect Marco, not with any of the girls he’d ever loved. As he kissed Filippo, he understood why people liked kissing so much. He understood how much he’d been missing out on by kissing the wrong people.

It lasted over half an hour. They walked home together, no stumbling or staggering, and no hiding either. 

Moreover, when he woke up in bed the next morning, Filippo hadn’t gone away.

She fell on it yesterday; it was clear that she was very tense at the beginning of the program, and she had some difficulties during the first 30 seconds of it, but then she managed to let go and executed everything else very well. Let’s see if she manages to execute her eight triples as planned: it would be vital for her in order to qualify for GPF. She needs to make a comeback and get at least a spot on the podium.

A: yes, she basically needs to place in front of Mihara Mai. She starts with the first Axel. 3A3T! And she didn’t even land the 3A perfectly, incredible.

Second Lutz…3Lz2T2Lo. A terrific performance, this is what she needed. Here’s the choreo sequence, and there’s still a triple jump left.

M: She can get the highest TES ever reached in a senior competition [by a lady].

A: The TES is already close to 80. And now the last jump for Kihira Rika…3S.

M: It’s a record!

A: A terrific performance from Kihira, who puts the pressure on all the others. Almost 87 points in TES, and she is understandably celebrating now.

M: To find a higher TES we need to go back to Junior Worlds 2018 - Kihira was there as well - where Trusova got 92,35 TES and executed two quads: Toeloop and Salchow. There were no quads here, but a 3A executed with a kind of quality we’ve never seen before [among ladies]. 87,07…this program can get close to 160.

A: Incredible. And it’s a score many would like to get in a FP in the men’s field.

M: With a difference: the factorization for the PCS.

A: Yes…87 TES would be nothing to scoff at among men - of course then there are some who can get 120 - but still, Kihira showed great strength here.

M: And she makes history for a number of reasons: the first, shown here [t/n: replay of 3A3T], a combination never seen before on the senior GP.

A: She had already landed it before and she is the only one in to do so in the ladies’ field.

M: Yes but never  - of course - on the senior GP.

A: Yes, this is her debut. And this is the second 3A, even more beautiful than the first one. Incredible.

M: She is also the first woman to land eight clean triples in a FP on the senior GP.

A: Two of them 3A. Of course to land eight triples you have to do at least one 3A. If you don’t do two 3A you need two combinations with triple jumps.

M: And the TES record, that belonged to Zagitova before this. Zagitova got 83,54.

A: Which was an amazing score already.

M: Yes, definitely, then of course the rules changed - you can get more points thanks to the new GOE scale. That said, you also need to be able to get them. Kihira just put a lot of pressure on the others, who can’t reach 160 points in the FP.

A: It will be difficult to get 140 for most of them to be honest. Some of them have gotten more than 140 before but…

M: So will Kihira win, get silver or bronze?

A: Third…difficult, I mean it’s difficult to imagine her getting lower than second. Look…ehh, 154,72, it could have been even higher!

M: She could have gotten more on PCS.

A: And it wouldn’t have been a scandal.

M: Yes, although 67,55 is still her career best on PCS.

A: Well, 224 guys, definitely a score that puts her in contention…
