Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Brandon Worthington reports on 5.3.18
Rogue River
Tumblr media
The Rogue River features a phenomenal Golden Stone and Salmonfly hatch which sees little attention but only because it's simply overshadowed by the arrival of Spring Chinook. We relish this inattention because it affords fly fishermen in the know non-stop dry fly fishing to eager trout on a beautiful river in early summer. What could be better?
Tumblr media
Fish on the Rogue are generally a mix of steelhead smolt, wild rainbows, and large coastal cutthroat trout. The fishing is perfect for a 4 weight, however, 5 weight rods are often appreciated when casting large, bushy dry flies and when we tie into one of the river's trophy Cutthroat. These remarkable leopards spotted predators are staging a real comeback after a strict catch and release regulations were implemented by ODFW. We see more and more of these fish in our catch each season, and many grow to impressive proportions.
Tumblr media
The hatch on the Rogue offers only a short window of opportunity with the best fishing occurring between the last week of May and first three weeks of June. Just 40 minutes out of Ashland, please drop us a line if you are interested in this fun and light-hearted fishing trip.

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Andras Outfitters reports on 3.2.17
Tumblr media
Finally, the Rogue dropped to fishable flows (at least where I like it) this week and I made a day of it yesterday with friends to see what’s out there. Though still on the high side, the color looks really good above Dodge. Actually, the color looks good at least to Tou Velle park just more water to deal with.  We did well, landing a few fish and losing a few more. After such a long, wet winter the sun came out in more ways than one yesterday which bodes well for the next six weeks so long as this drying trend continues.

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Andras Outfitters reports on 1.18.17
Tumblr media
Flows finally dropped in last weekend so Rachel and I took Saturday afternoon to find out what all of this water brought upriver.  Still running about 1,000 cfs above normal at the time, the color looked really good and Rachel landed a bright winter fish quickly into the float.  We found fish throughout the drift, all wild with winter and late summers in the mix.  Rain returned to the Rogue Valley yesterday and blew the river out again below Rogue Elk leaving only the uppermost stretch fishable below the dam.  That could change as the forecast calls for more rain through the weekend with drier conditions and maybe some sunshine not predicted until early next week.

Klamath River Fly Fishing Report
Rick Cox reports on 9.28.18
The Klamath and Rogue River
Wild Waters guides recently did a recon to the Lower Klamath to checkout the steelhead run. To their pleasant surprise the lower river showed a very strong steelhead presence with numerous pods of them moving through.
Tumblr media
We experienced some double-digit days with a mix of half-pounders and adults. I don’t want to get too cocky but hang on to your knickers, this may be one of those good years after a couple of mediocre ones. Upon the Rogue we have been experiencing some very good days too, there are steelhead spread throughout the system. Most of our efforts have been from TouVelle Park up river where there seems to be good number of summer and fall run fish

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Jim Andras reports on 5.17.18
As the Rogue's trout season opens next Tuesday, I took a scenic float to check out what's happening on the upper river.  Water levels and clarity are really good and sunshine brought out the bugs.
Tumblr media
Caddis, mayflies, and stones all got active and salmon flies started flying mid-morning.  Observed several fish take the big bugs aggressively and that speaks well to a great opener on the 22nd!

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
John Rickard reports on 5.10.18
Rogue River
Tumblr media
Like the Klamath, the Rogue is all about the big bug. Far more popular of a Salmonfly hatch is the "Holy Water" on the Rogue. Ample walk n' wade spots are available, but many anglers take a seasonal pilgrimage to these waters and it is likely you'll see fellow fisherman in your favorite spots.
Tumblr media
The drift boat can offer a great way to float the upper sections with some room to work and who doesn't like casting dry flies out of the boat? Mid-day is best under the bobber (Jaydecator), and you might just hook into a steelhead or a springer salmon.

Rogue River Fly Fishing Reports
Jim Andras reports on 3.9.2018
Tumblr media
The upper Rogue continues to fish well.  This week brought more winter fish upstream and a slow snowmelt greened up the water perfectly.  There are fish headed both directions  and that will likely continue through the month.  However, from what I saw earlier this week it feels like our winter season's finally gettin' going.  Thank you for staying interested in the Rogue River!

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Jim Andras reports on 2.8.2018
Tumblr media
I understand that fly fishing in winter does not appeal to everyone.  Compared to fall, anglers face greater variability in weather and water that can create less comfortable conditions and heighten the challenge.  For some, thoughts of winter conditions and shiny steelhead circulate continuously throughout the year in anticipation of their arrival.  Well, they're here.  Please give me a shout to talk winter steelhead on the Rogue.  Thank you.  Jim Andras 800.488.5794

Rogue River Steelhead Report
Andras Outfitters Reports on 12.7.2017
What a difference a year makes!  Last year, the Rogue got really big in December and stayed that way through April making for an extremely limited winter steelhead season.  Yesterday I guided the river under clear skies, excellent water conditions and slid the net under great wild steelhead!  The weather over the next 10 days looks to stay unseasonably warm and dry with highs hovering in the mid 50's.  I can't wish for any better conditions this time of year and have the 9th-12th open to fish.  Thank you, Jim Andras

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Jim Andras Reports on 10.26.2017
It's been a long time since I posted a report.  Overall, the upper Rogue has fished well since August.   Good numbers of wild steelhead in the system again with a broader mix of age classes than in past years.  So, we're seeing steelhead ranging from 20 - 28 inches making up for most of the run.  My next available dates are Nov. 21, 22, 29, 30.  Thank you for reading and Happy Halloween!

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Jim Andras Reports on 8/4/17
Finally back on the Rogue after what feels like too long.  Fished a number of days over the past two weeks and have found steelhead on every trip.   I would not go as far to say that there are lots of fish around but bright, wild steelhead are always worth the effort.  Did not include any photos as we've been under a heat wave and I made a point to keep the fish wet.  The extreme temperatures (112 today) will mellow out after today but the forecast calls for our highs to hover around the 100 degree mark over the next 10 days.  Thankfully, last winter provided plenty of snow which has kept lots of cold water flowing through the summer heat!  Feels like we're in for another great late summer and fall on the Rogue.  My availability August - November is limited with only following dates available.  Thank you!
August - 22, 28 November - 26-30

Rogue River Fly Fishing Report
Jim Andras Reports on 6.9.2017
Tumblr media
The salmonfly hatch really got going last week on the upper Rogue with bugs crawling and flying in impressive numbers.  As usual, it took the fish a few days to start capitalizing on the steady stream of food floating overhead.  However, the response did click and we should see our best window of dry fly fishing on the Rogue through the end of the month.  This is a great time to experience a different side of the Rogue during arguably the most scenic season.  Say hello to summer with a beautiful float casting dry flies to rainbows and coastal cutthroat.

Rogue River Fly Fishing Reports
Jim Andras reports on 5.11.17
Tumblr media
Though still flowing about 1500 cfs above normal, water levels are heading in the right direction for the Rogue's trout opener on May 27th. Salmonflies and golden stones should start flying end of May/beginning of June and pitching dries over the coming weeks serves as a highlight for summer trout fishing in the Rogue Valley. After months of enduring high water, the rainbows and coastal cutthroat will certainly be looking up, ready to gorge on the big bugs!

Southern Oregon Fly Fishing Report
Jim Andras reports on 3.23.17
About ready to pull the plug on what has been an extremely limited winter steelhead season on the upper Rogue. Flows continued to go in the wrong direction last week and today finally look stable. Unfortunately, too much flow continues to push through the dam and, with all the snow in the mountains above Lost Creek Reservoir, I cannot imagine any major change will occur soon.
On the bright side, the tributary creeks look really good and I imagine them full of spawning, wild steelhead with plenty of cold water this spring and summer to help out the juveniles.
Will be heading over to the Williamson River June through August for lake run rainbows and then back on the Rogue September 1.  Hope to see you in S. Oregon soon.

Rouge River Fly Fishing Report
Jim Andras Reports on 2.9.2017
More rain continues to keep the upper Rogue's flows rising and unfishable.  We're seeing heavy rain in S. Oregon today so I expect the river to continue to rise at least throughout the day today.  Looks like we're in for a break starting Friday but it's difficult to say if it will last long enough for conditions to improve before the next batch of storms hits next week.
Typically the best window for winter fish occurs between March and mid-April so there's still plenty of time for great fishing if Mother Nature gives us a break soon.
