adding to this because OP does have a point, but it gets funnier when you start looking at how wildly inconsistent women are treated and presented in dmbj, because on one hand you get wu xie's mother that's literally just. wu xie's mom. and on the other you have an entire book whose main character is a woman and whose entire plot (for the most part) revolves around her having a lot of baggage and bonding with another woman. how does one do that i don't know
cannot get over this description of wu xie from the fandom wiki, like npss truly out here putting the bare minimum effort into his female characters (translation: no effort. absolutely none). wu xie's mother literally still alive, he visits her and his dad for new year's, but no one can be bothered to give her a name. couldn't even let bai ma wake up for five minutes. a-ning, su nan, don't get me started. huo xiuxiu barely squeaking past his indifference. tomb raiding gonna die out in another generation bc there are no women*, go king give us nothing
*except for liang wan who is, as someone recently pointed out, a total himbo; and bai haotian, who miraculously escapes notice maybe bc of the bowl haircut and overalls. they are both adorable and non-negotiable and if npss ever does anything to them i will kword everyone in this room and then myself him
#in all seriousness though#dmbj has a weird track record with women as a whole that deserves a whole post to unpack tbh#from the treatment and presence of female characters to the off-hand misogynistic comments the male characters make#yes even the main ones#i love pangzi but he is in fact culprit number one of this#that being said#i do think some (but not all) things can be somewhat justified plot wise#for example a ning who many people consider to have been fridged#and maybe she should have lived longer#but she's not very present for the most part (in the books at least) and while her death serves a narrative purpose for wu xie#panzi's death 4 books later serves a very similar narrative purpose#so in that sense at least npss doesn't discriminate#huo xiuxiu has also arguably become a main secondary character like xiao hua and hei xiazi in her own right#she's definitely the most present female character#she's also as heavily involved in the plot of the more recent books and is tomb robbing in cursed places with the boys#there are also many many minor female characters scattered across the story many people don't talk about bc they're book exclusive#does that mean dmbj doesn't have casual misogynistic content?#no#there definitely is#i guess that's what happens when your pov character is a man written by a man#but it's very#wildly variable#and it doesn't mean there aren't well written female characters despite that imo#ANYWAY#i blame wu xie's comp het#maybe npss's comp het#who knows#dmbj
