Thoughts on the hit indie psychological horror game "omori"?
never heard of it. is it newer or something? hate to be the odd one out, but if it’s from less than five years ago i probably haven’t.
i checked it out briefly… it doesn’t really look like my cup of tea. i guess if you like psychological horror rpgs then you’ll dig it though.

alright okay i saw the ask mentioning a “horror game that hits way too close to home” and its. its the Omor. so besides the whole rot flare-up thing, how do you think pebbles would react to the Game,,
(personally i think he would bawl at final duet like the rest of us 😔)
WARNING OMORI SPOILERS AHEAD
I mean canonically he's basically omori. But unless I come up with something, the whole killing sibing doesn't make much sense in the modernerator universe. So with that, I don't think the truth would get him. I think he'd just be flabbergasted when it's revealed. Could maybe come up with a way for pebbles to ALMOST kill moon in an accident but for now I think dealing with the rot is enough.
Also as a basil disliker I must project my absolute HATE for that flowery bastard onto him. (jk I think he's fine please don't burn my crops)
but anyways uh I think he'd be fine with the rest of the game in terms of not psychological horror bits. Only thing I can really think of is him finding sweetheart annoying and the Humphrey fight unbearable. But then again that's pretty normal I think.
The main bit I wanted to mention with this is how he'd get the endings. Y'know that scripted death at the omori fight? I feel like he'd chose 'no' thinking he'd be able to attempt it the next day and just head to bed. So basically he'd get the bad end first on accident and get the true/good end the next day. Also he would for sure bawl his eyes out at final duet.
I've had an ask going stale in my inbox that I would have used to doodle that last bit but never got the motivation to so I'll just put the ask here.
Anyways I think that's all I wanted to mention. It's been quite a while since I last played/watched someone play omori and don't really plan to go back through it since it's such a long game and I've had to restart it maybe 4 times from moving devices and also getting it on the switch (the farthest I ever got was starting humphrey in my very first playthrough which is on a device that I don't use anymore).
alright I'll stop and go back to being kinda productive gbye fo now :3
#modernerators#not art#streamer pebbles gaming#omor#idk what to put here#okay actually gbye this time

Very frequently I think about how Sweetheart is not real, but is in fact just a fictional personality from a video game I played in late October-early November of 2022, and then get very sad.
RAAAAGH I NEED MY FAVORITE FICTIONAL CHARACTER TO BE REAL AND PHYSICAL AND IN FRONT OF ME SO I CAN HUG HER RIGHT NOW BUT SHE ISN'T!!! IT SUCKS!!!
I swear omocat has cast a fucking spell on me, a spell that turned me into a real life sprout mole. Like you don't understand how much this has affected me. I've literally found myself having one of my top reasons for hoping there is indeed a Heaven to be that I could potentially have my dream of Sweetheart being real be made true.
This all applies to most of my hyperfixations and all but it is the absolute most intense for Sweetheart. please I just want to hug her so badly and I don't even like physical touch outside of cuddling animals what even is this
I am so very normal and sane about Sweetheart from the hit Indie Adventure Psychological Horror RPG Maker game Omori released on multiple platforms, originally during the month of December 2020, I promise you I'm very normal and sane about her I swear
#I NEED TO HUG HER AND SQUEEZE HER LIKE A STRESS BALL SO BAD RAAAAAAAAAAGH#I AM NORMAL AND SANE I AM NORMAL AND SANE I AM NORMAL AND SANE I AM NORMAL AND SANE#anyways uhhhh actual tags now#omori#Sweetheart omori#omori sweetheart#duchess sweetheart#sweetheartomori#ramblings

Why of course I would reblog Aubrey art! For in general, here on this site called Tumblr, all art must be reblogged to expose the artists and share their wonderful talented work! And not only that, Aubrey is from hit psychological horror RPG Omori which i adore most exceedingly, thus, I must appreciate all art regarding the game. Mhm. Yes, indeed.

I think Sunny from the hit psychological horror game OMORI is dead silent 99% of the time so that he can randomly say the most absurd things at random intervals and scare people.
Everyone's talking and like, there's a one percent chance of him randomly speaking up and deciding to inform everyone that they could bite their fingers off because they have the consistency of carrots. One percent though...

Back to the 90's: Launch Dreamed Away's Kickstarter with a Demo
Dreamed Away Kickstarter launches for the action adventure RPG game with a Demo for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Special thanks to the skilled developer, Nicolas Petton, for his exceptional work. The crowdfunding campaign is now live. Dreamed Away, a fascinating new project, has just launched a Kickstarter campaign. Due to raising $21,616 USD (20,000€) by February 29th, 2024. It's the brainchild of French developer Nicolas Petton and Pineapple Works, an indie publisher from Poland. It's a pixel art action adventure RPG, and if you're a fan of titles like Earthbound or Omori, this one's due to hit the right notes. The setting takes us back to France in the 90s, and you step into the shoes of Théo, a young boy. But this is no ordinary adventure. Théo finds himself in a shadowy, dream-like realm after waking up to discover his family missing. The story unfolds in a world filled with eerie entities like Ghosts, Phantoms, and Revenants, as Théo searches through catacombs and other ominous locales, always chasing after his sister Louise but never quite catching her.

It's me again hello :)
My sister has a headcanon that some of the cast (the gang? The og friends? Not sure) used to be fans of psychological horror-esque games (such as Omori) before Mari's death and now they still enjoy them but have to be super super careful of triggers. I really like that headcanon ngl 👀
Hi there! Sorry for the wait on this (Universe why so much work) but I've talked a little bit about this and I definitely want to expand on it because my Suntan mind is at work
So in their little friend group there is a big divide on scary things. It splits fairly down the middle with Mari, Sunny, and Kel loving scary things and Hero, Basil, and Aubrey very much not. Even a cheesy bad 80s monster movie with terribly fake effects and horrible acting will scare Hero and Basil, and so they try to avoid watching scary movies as a group. If the horror junkies get a hankering to watch something frightening, then Basil and Hero will go into the kitchen to bake or into the dining room to play a board game.
Aubrey likes to pretend she isn't scared of anything (mostly to spite Kel who likes to tease her) but truthfully she doesn't like scary movies. Even when she gets older she doesn't like them, but she hides it better from the Hooligans. Luckily Mari and Hero realize what's happening quickly, and usually Hero can pull her away by saying that he needs an extra hand for baking or their game is 3+ players.
When it comes to video games however, I think this is where it's just Sunny and Kel. Mari isn't a big gamer, it just doesn't really hit the kind of thing she enjoys. Mari is a quick person with a sharp mind, so she probably would get pretty bored at the beginning of games that is easy things. With horror games, even the psychological ones, she would just get bored too fast to enjoy them. Plus something about a video game is different than a movie she can't suspend her disbelief long enough for it to be enjoyable as an experience. She's too busy trying to win instead of trying to play.
So scary games are Kel and Sunny's thing. Usually the whole group is together, but there are a good amount of times where they break out into smaller groups to do things. So when the other four are off in their own little groups, Sunny and Kel will go up to Kel's room and use his gaming systems to play scary games. They have other games they play too, but they both like the ones that make them jump a little bit or think too hard at night.
Post canon after the truth has come out, it's hard to be in a full group together at first. There's a lot of emotions there, and being all in one place usually exacerbates those emotions. The easiest thing to do is to start in small bursts, seeing a few of each other for a small bit of time
So Kel chooses scary games. It's the perfect solution, it's something that only he and Sunny enjoys, and he knows none of them will bug them. Of course now he does his best to choose games that don't have certain things. He avoids any games with mentions of suicide, and he also avoids games that are about covering up people's deaths. After a particular game that leaves Sunny shaking, he also avoids games that deal with voices inside of someone's head. Overall though the games bring them a lot closer together. Kel and Sunny are able to let go of how awkward they're supposed to feel and get back to being the best friends they used to be. Having Sunny lean his head on his shoulder while watching him play through a game resets something in both of them that was lost all those years ago.
Sometimes Hero will come in the room too. He doesn't sit and play with them, he's still scared and the wounds are still fresh, but he sits on his bed and reads or does some of his summer work for school. Kel always stays really casual about it to try and keep Sunny and Hero both feeling comfortable, and after awhile it's perfectly natural for Hero to come in while they're playing and even sit on Kel's bed faced away from the TV to chat with them

So I finally finished Omori!
Uh...I got thoughts. Lots of them. They’re bulleted below for your viewing pleasure and my mental checklist. Spoilers abound below the cut, so please refrain from reading if you haven’t finished the game!
Omori is a love letter to video games. From its Earthbound inspired design to its various little nods to other games whether intentional or not. (The music at the train station and the musician whose song sounds like a K. K. Slider classic [Animal Crossing], the baseball and the bat [Off], the whale level [Kingdom Hearts], and the toaster and the blender [To the Moon and Finding Paradise, as included in the game per Cr*aot*c’s request to Kan Gao unless he lied about that, too...] are some of the one’s I noticed!) It feels very similar to the RPG Maker games I grew up with like Wadanohara and The Grey Garden, so I felt at home exploring the world!
I agree with a lot of the points that uricksaladbar (a fantastic youtuber, and I highly recommend his content if you like well-edited and well-written video game essays) brought up with regards to the use of Headspace and how the events there do not progress the plot, but I think Headspace’s main function is like a daydream to distract from what lies hidden and that the time spent there isn’t supposed to advance the plot. Traumatic memories are sometime repressed to protect a person and that’s the primary function of Headspace: to keep those memories from resurfacing. It’s kind of why it starts to crack, slowly but steadily, as Sunny leaves his house. It’s also why Sunny has a fear of heights, drowning, and spiders because his memories associated with them are intertwined with his trauma. Whether aware of it or not, those phobias actively keep him from thinking about Mari. Despite the pacing issues, I had a lot of fun exploring Headspace (except for the area from the Last Resort to Humphrey. Especially Humphrey. Fuck you, Humphrey), and it’s interesting to look at its “lack of progression” as being a meaningful design choice than “padding for length.”
I really like the Faraway Town sections more, but that’s because I prefer the more natural color scheme and grounded setting. My favorite gaming series of all time is Story of Seasons, so casually taking part-time jobs and getting to know the townspeople was definitely something I enjoyed more than the RPG elements of Headspace.
Omori does a great job of showing how different people grieve, and I love how it reconciles with the fact that there is no “right way to grieve.” I remember talking with one of my old roommates about the book The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson, and she said she didn’t like it. It conveys a very unconventional method of grieving, similar to the one found in the manga Haru’s Curse/Haru no Noroi by Asuka Konishi, which can make it hard for some people to relate to. More than anything, I do genuinely believe the crux of this story is learning how to accept and overcome grief, and it’s wrapped up in a happy little tale of friendship!
I don’t have much to say on the characters (except for Basil; he’s got his own bullet point after this). They’re functional for the plot. That’s about it. But I would like an IRL Hero for myself, please.
I...don’t really like Basil all that much. And while a lot of people, my brother included, keep calling him “best boy” and “the bestest friend you could ever have,” all I saw was an insecure boy. It’s true that the trauma haunting him may have contributed to it as well, but the need to be the photographer, to take pictures, to enjoy from a distance, tells me just how desperately he needed them in his life. (Note the photo album is called Basil’s Memories and not referencing the group as whole.) Which is why his involvement in Mari’s death and the ensuing fallout, while already traumatic for anyone, probably hit him the hardest. Because he ended up alone, unable to escape the trauma, compared to the other four who found other avenues of coping besides Constant Suffering, even if some of their coping mechanisms weren’t exactly healthy.
The personification of their trauma is fantastic. Basil’s takes the form of roots that act like vines, trapping him. Sunny’s is the silhouette of Mari’s hanging body with her eye open, looking at him, haunting him like a ghost. Very symbolic!
I...uh...thought the twist was kind of...underwhelming. The game does a very good job foreshadowing Mari’s death being related to her hanging herself, which I did believe for most of my time with the game, but I was having second thoughts with what Shadow Basil, Basil, and even Aubrey was implying. Clearly Basil had something to do with Mari’s death, but my conclusion was that he killed Mari as an act of self defense to protect Sunny and Aubrey witnessed it. Like I literally thought Mari was a slimy sister that was wonderful and great to everyone but Sunny. (I’m so sorry, Mari.) This falls in line if this game were actually a psychological horror, but this game fell kind of flat in that regard. I don’t consider it as a psychological horror (more just psychological with slight horror elements), and I think coming in expecting a full blown psychological horror kind of dampened The Plot Twist for me. I was expecting to be absolutely horrified but...I just ended up feeling really bad for two kids who were so traumatized they literally Could Not Handle It.
Besides being a very good story for grief, Omori does a fantastic job in showing the affect that trauma has on people. I should also note that Sunny’s three phobias is a very typical when several traumatic instances happen in close succession. We often like to think of trauma as a result of a singular event, which it can be in cases like say a terrible car crash, but it sort of simplifies and reduces the effect of the trauma in a way. Trauma is best described, in my opinion, as an onion or a mille feuille, insert your choice of layered object here, because that singular event is composed of tiny little events or memories (perhaps broken down by senses). The game uses a simplistic way of doing it by breaking Sunny’s reaction to the drowning event into three phobias compartmentalized in Headspace, but it is something to note since most media likes to handle trauma as The Thing instead of the Amalgamation of Things that Make this Thing Traumatic.
Lastly, the soundtrack is a whole banger. Absolutely amazing.
To those who got to the end of this, thank you for reading! This isn’t necessarily a review for Omori, but it’s more so a place for me to jot down any thoughts and expand upon them. It’s been good practice for me in breaking down narratives and trying to see things from different perspectives or expanding upon why I don’t like things besides just not liking them lol.
#omori#jho speaks#game analysis#might as well use that tag now because i know i’m gonna have Thoughts when I finally play Nier Replicant#added additional commentary because of a kind anon’s clarification!

I think there are paranormal happenings in omori in that it is actually the real ghost of Mari talking to omori in that part where they travel dreamworld together, the dialogue feels like it hits us over the head with that idea in fact haha, AND that part where she’s playing the piano and asks sunny if he wants to finally play their song together, I mean, hero did hear the piano too, but i think that’s as far as it goes with paranormal stuff. I don’t think there’s any ghosts out and about causing trouble in the game’s real world, I think the whole deal was that Mari wanted to help her little brother finally move on, her love for him was just that strong, and she couldn’t rest In peace until she knew he’d be ok. But that’s just this anon’s two cents. (Also can I say I love the idea of the afterlife being the piano room’s open window with flowing curtains? Very pretty aesthetic and bittersweetly symbolic)
Yeah I’ve seen this theory floating around more and more. I personally disagree with the whole “Hero hears Mari’s piano cus it’s actually her spirit playing” part as it can be attributed to Hero being emotionally affected from staying in Mari’s and Sunny’s house again after so long and so he thinks he hears her piano from how much he misses her.
I like the story more without paranormal elements because, at least to me, that makes the psychological horror parts of the game better.
But like I said, your thoughts are perfectly valid and the game doesn’t confirm or deny paranormal events.
