Long post, be warned! [And this is just part one...]

The USS Sonder (NCC-1974) is a relatively small, somewhat expendable starship with a crew of around 200.

Captain Saharin W. Exlar (they/she/he) is the commanding officer of the Sonder and a fully telepathic Betazoid. They like the idea of a crew as a found family, and is hoping to form that kind of relationship with their own crew now that they have their own command. Exlar has some struggles with their personal identity, which is explored in the story.

First officer At'Han Tav (she/her) is the first of her kind in Starfleet. [Tav is a Chlorisian, one of my original species. They are humanoids who live in symbiosis with plants that grow in/on their bodies.] Despite her formidable intelligence, she is having a hard time learning the social norms and languages of the other crew members. [The "languages" part wouldn't usually be a problem, but Exlar likes to turn the universal translators off in hopes to encourage the crew to learn about each other's cultures.] Despite the initial awkwardness, Tav means well and tries her best to be as kind as possible to the others [maybe a bit too much so.]

Dr. August Thompson (he/they) is the chief medical officer and a Human- at least, that's what he claims to be, despite the unusual colours, seemingly psychic abilties, casual teleportation and occasional X-ray vision. While they are rather odd, Thompson is nice enough and very good at his job, and so Exlar lets him stay despite the "secretly a Q" rumours going around. This mystery serves as a reccuring side plot, until the Q continuum themselves hear of this rumour in what would be the season finale, and reveal that Thompson is not one of them- the true cause for his abilities is far stranger. [Alternate dimension weirdness, will explain in part 2 if you ask.]

Chief engineer M'Row (he/him) is a Caitian and one of the more experienced crew members, having worked on a starbase before. He asked to be transferred to a starship in hopes of finding his partner, who served on a starship which recently went missing. However, the Sonder is not one of the ships involved in the search. M'Row pretends to be alright with this, but he is already considering requesting a new assignment. He is nonetheless quite friendly with the rest of the crew, and occasionally makes snacks for them.

Ensign Tenfold Pollux (she/they) comes from a planet fhat hasn't even developed spaceflight yet. However, she was kidnapped by space pirates as a young child and rescued by a Federation ship shortly after. As returning them home would be against the Prime Directive, Pollux has spent her childhood being transferred across ships and starbases. Now as an actual Starfleet officer, they are planning to advance through the ranks, get their own starship and make official first contact with her home planet- no matter if they're warp-capable or not.
