My personal top 43 for ESC 2018
part 1 | part 2 | part 3
15) Estonia - okay let's get one thing straight. Elina is stunning and her voice is out of this world. The song in itself though...it sounds a bit cold, empty. It's just a bunch of real/typical opera verses in Italian patched together without an overall meaning. It almost sounds like she's just doing vocal exercise Can’t ignore those alarm notes she reaches with the same effort it takes me to say “ciao” though On another note, the instrumental version is magic ..now I’ll go sit and wait for Estonia to directly invade Italy next year :”
14) France - this went a bit down from where it originally was when it was chosen, though I still like it, there’s something very captivating about the story, the rhythm and Emilie’s voice
13) Germany - so empathy is not really something I’m a champion in, but for some reason I manage to participate in this boy’s story as he tells it?
Numbers are an illusion, my top 10 starts here sdfghjfgh
12) Albania - this is SO refreshing coming from a country that sent so many female voices in the past few years! And the song is amazing, I love the way it builds up, and I think he is hands down the best male voice of the year
11) Switzerland - This song is so filled with sass and energy and attitude it makes me want to stand up for something like right now; also I LOVE the siblings and I LOVE their style
10) Ukraine - Idk the whole song/performance combo just looks so rad. I’m going to take a moment to appreciate that he actually worked on his pronounciation :” I’m glad he did because the lyrics of this are actually pretty good imo. Also he looks so cool, the white lens ahhhh if he had curly hair too I'd be worshipping him asdfghdf go white eyed fella
9) Lithuania - what I really love about this is that it is super sweet from start to finish without ending up being cheesy; even if Ieva didn’t write the song herself, you can tell she actually feels it, which makes her interpretation totally genuine and heartfelt. I also love her whispery voice ahhhh
8) Bulgaria - this has “Loreen” written all over it, in the sense that it may very well have popped out of one of her post-ESC works (she even sang Zhana’s part in the demo I think? SOMEONE LEAK THAT ALREADY But tbh I’m glad they went for a bulgarian artist instead); so, I understand why some people think this sounds too constructed and not genuine, but I just love the dark atmosphere they manage to create
7) The Netherlands - guess who's a sucker for country music c: okay not always, I actually wasn’t a fan of his entry in 2014, which led me to not really expect anything this year...but they surprised me, we got country rock! yay!
6) Italy - whoops, my country in top 10 again...but what can I say, we are sending two amazing artists, two of our most talented and successful songwriters of the latest years with a song with heart-wrenchingly meaningful poetry-like lyrics, so I don’t feel like putting it any lower...
As for our chances to do good, I actually think that people are being way too optimistic :” but I’m glad for all the support they are receiving, I actually didn’t expect that
5) Hungary - I have kept this outside of my top 10 for far too long! It's weird because it’s as far from what I usually listen to as you can get, and yet it grew on me so much and now I adore it and it’s one of the songs I listen to the most this year?? Someone says they can really end up high and I want to believe it
4) Israel - This was “I don’t know wtf is this but I LOVE it” at first listening! I'm a bit sad some people see this as a joke or just as "chicken noises". I didn't even realize they were chcken noises at first, I just thought she was messing around with the looper lmao BUT anyway, the sounds are there to accompany the meaning of the song soo; Netta looks like a super creative person and I think her interpretation of this song shows it
3) Denmark - this is one of the songs that I loved since the exact moment it was released, and even though the Danish selection had a lot of good songs I still think they made the perfect choice, going with the epic song about the pacifist viking legend!
2) Belgium - just like Latvia, in the past 4 years Belgium has been 3 out of 4 times in my top 10; Belgium was in my top 5 all 3 times and this year they haven't disappointed. This is so elegant, Sennek’s voice does things to me, and I love the story of how the idea for this came from a broken teapot that was just so aesthetic that they had to write a song starting from it asdfghjk
1) Greece - you may not know it but I don’t have a very happy relationship with Greece in ESC, they have never been among my 20 favourites since when I properly watch (2015)...and then this song happened. A perfect, epic, ethnic-sounding song in native language sung by a greek goddess. I hope it does as well as possible
Special note: so in the 3 days span I spent posting this top, Georgia actually grew on me a lot?? don’t ask me how, don’t ask me why, but it did asdfghj well
