So my husband asked me, if I could go back in time and go to any movie premiere, which would I go to?
My first thought was Ghostbusters. That is such a fun movie but I would have loved to see it in theaters when it came out.
Then Paranormal Activity. I didn't get to see it in a packed theater before the plot was known so I got to miss out on some prime reactions. Same with Blair Witch Project.
But the one that I'd drop everything to go see, as long as I was taken back to the present immediately after?
Metropolis.
I love this movie. But there are still one or two more scenes I haven't seen because they've never been recovered or restored. Going to Germany in 1927, to the first showing of the full movie...
That's an experience I would love to have.

But the hands that built the tower of Babel knew nothing of the dream of the brain that had conceived it. One man's hymns of praise became other men's curses.

#metropolis 1949#metropolis manga#tezuka star system#mitchy#kenichi#art tag#i dont think i consider metropolis a must-read unless youre a hardcore tezuka fan but it IS a very interesting one#especially as a fan of astro boy metropolis 2001 AND metropolis 1927#mitchy is the son of fritz lang's false maria and the mother of atom#and the whole work is a fascinating reminder of the cyclical and referential nature of all art#(not to say metropolis 1949 doesnt have value standing on its own- it totally does and i really enjoyed reading it)#(but it's almost impossible to look at completely on its own given its place in this long chain of things vaguely inspired by each other)#(all of which are much more well-known)

'Fritz Lang's production designers—Erich Kettelhut, Otto Hunte and Kurt Vollbrecht—shaped the fictional city of Metropolis by re-imagining contemporary Manhattan. [T]hey spliced the city with buildings inspired by avant-garde European architects—among them, Cubist architects from the Bauhaus School; expressionists, like Erich Mendelsohn; Le Corbusier, with his vision of high-rise cities; and ... the Italian Futurist Antonio Sant'Elia, whose "Città Nuova," presented his future city as a multi-level megastructure shot through with daring interconnecting bridges and vertiginous aerial walkways.'
