Bokuto Koutarou x Reader
Summary: A surprising (and slightly hilarious) encounter with a patrol of knights leads you to helping one of them out. Who knows what will happen when you meet the knight with golden eyes again?
Word Count: 2.3K
Warnings: FLUFF FLUFF FLUFF
A/N: Hey y'all! This is MY FOURTH FIC for The Barn's "Royal Rodeo Collab"! Since my requests are open... feel free to drop more for the Royal AUs! Please check the masterlist to make sure that character hasn't already been taken, and if they have, I can check with whoever has taken them to make sure it's cool! This has been a really popular series and I would love to keep it up! Please enjoy! -Birch<3
Trees whip by your head, causing you to duck left, right, and down to avoid them. Your mare, a black Friesian named Midnight, galloped underneath you, her strides long and confident as she loped her way down the trails in the woods.
Your riding gloves grip tighter around the reins in your fingers, and you look to your right as you hear voices coming from the other side of the stream.
You slow Midnight to a trot, guiding her around some bushes, and ducking through some low-hanging branches as you look for an opening to the bed of the stream.
“Easy girl, whoa,” you whisper under your breath as you slowly pull on your reins, giving Midnight time to slow her feet down as your eyes rake the far bank for any signs of the voices you heard.
Across the water, a patrol of knights is moving across the far bank, where you catch sight of three beautiful white Lipizzans, knights in shining silver armor atop them.
You push Midnight upstream to catch their attention, and you see their heads swivel to look at you as you raise one arm to wave at them with a kind smile.
“Good day, my lords. It’s a wonderful day for a ride,” you call out, a grin on your face as the knight in the lead turns to face you.
In a split moment, you go to warn him about the low hanging branch in front of him, but his gaze doesn’t seem to find the dark wood, as it was trained on the curve of your face and the slope of your lips from across the way.
The knight’s horse slides out from underneath him, leaving the knight hanging on the thick branch, surely knocking the air out of him. The Lipizzan the knight had been on takes off in a sure lope away from the patrol, and the two other knights set out to chase it down.
The knight slides off of the branch with a groan, landing on his back with a solid thud as you begin to make your way across the water.
The bottom of your riding cloak and the trim on the bottom of your dress gets wet as you cross the stream, but you don’t seem to mind when you notice the knight not moving.
A soft chuckle leaves your lips as you halt your horse next to him, jumping off efficiently and as gracefully as you can before you loop your reins over the branch the knight had run into. A few steps lead you to the knight, whose helmet had flown off when he made impact with the ground.
You are met with the sharp, chiseled features of the knight, and you notice the way his white and black hair falls messily into his eyes.
What you aren’t expecting is the bright and glowing gold of his eyes as you offer him your hand. Your (colored) eyes lock onto his own golden colored ones, and you can’t help but flush under the intensity of his gaze.
The knight heaves himself to his feet with the help of your hand, and he flushes as he realizes how pretty you look up close and in front of him.
“I- uhm, thank you for helping me, o-out. I guess I uhm, I got a little distracted,” he stutters out, his cheeks painted red as he rubs at the back of his head sheepishly.
“It was no problem, it’s a good thing I was right across the river,” you chirp out as you flick a piece of leaf off of his shoulder, giving him a gentle smile as you regain eye contact with him.
This seems to catch the knight off guard a little and he mumbles, “Haha, yeah, you looked really pretty and I didn’t look where I was going, and I really should’ve because now I don’t know where my horse is- oh my gosh I just called you pretty and you don’t even know who I am.”
The knight looks like he wants to sink into a hole that very moment, but a chiming laugh falls from your lips as you take a step back toward your horse. You smile as you unloop your reins and giggle out, “Really, it was no problem. I’m glad I could help.”
Both of you turn at the sound of horses’ hoofsteps approaching, and soon the two other knights appear in front of you, the loose horse in tow. The knight you helped off of the ground calls excitedly, “Akaashi, Hinata, you found ole Jerry! I didn’t think he would get too far!”
The knight, apparently named Akaashi just rolls his eyes and states, “C’mon, we should get going. This patrol is supposed to be over in another half hour, and we still have a lot of territory to cover.”
The knight with the two-toned hair sighs and nods, turning to look at you, who had swung back up and into your saddle. He gives you a wide grin and asks, “When will I see you again, miss?”
You smile at him as you push Midnight back toward the water and call out, “Perhaps a lot sooner than you may think.”
A few weeks later, the white and black haired knight is out on a mission. He’s once again riding his trusty Lippizan, Jerry, as he calls him, and is out to deliver an important letter to a nobleman who lives out in the woods.
The knight is wandering down the beaten road in front of him, golden eyes wide and alert as he looks for any thieves or robbers on the sides of the path, possibly hiding behind trees or bushes in front or behind him.
A soft and melodic voice floating through the trees catches him off guard, and he reaches behind him to grab the sword strapped to his back as he guides Jerry off of the dirt path.
Up ahead, a large meadow opens up, where bunches of red flowers dot the field, the occasional yellow or orange flower here or there in full bloom.
In the middle of the field are you and Midnight. You are singing a soft lullaby, the tune one the knight could remember from his childhood. Along with your singing, you are doing liberty work with your black mare.
The Friesian was bridleless, had no tack on, and jogged around you, as you pointed and whistled in between lyrics. At the final verse of the song, you raise your arms up, signaling Midnight to rear.
The graceful black mare rises up from the ground, balancing delicately on her back feet while pawing at the air before she lands on her front legs again. You bow to your horse, arms sweeping to the side as Midnight nickers and goes to bow right back at you.
You giggle and smile at your mare, petting her gently on the nose before you hear clapping behind you, making you jump in surprise. You turn to see a tall figure clad in metal armor behind you, but you smile as the man takes off his helmet, shaking out his shaggy white and black locks.
You curtsey playfully to him, a flush settling on your cheeks as he slides off of Jerry, tying him to a nearby tree before making his way through the grass toward you. As the knight does so, you grab Midnight’s halter and the rope you used to lead her from the ground, slipping it on over her head with practiced ease.
The knight makes his way up to you casually, but he goofily leans down into a dramatic bow in front of Midnight, chuckling as the mare snorted at him. As he stands up to his full height, you swallow nervously as you see the orange light from the sunset bouncing off of his angled features.
The tall man lightly bows to you, his golden eyes glowing from the intensity of the sun as he states, “I’m Bokuto Koutarou, a knight from the kingdom of Fukurodani. I am at your service, madame.”
His eye twinkles a little as he offers you his hand, and you giggle as you set your hand in his gloved one. Bokuto whispers over your knuckles, “And I’m the idiot who got hit by a tree because I was admiring your beauty.”
At that, he gently kisses your knuckles before pulling his lips away and softly dropping your hand from his own. He glances behind you, toward the setting sun and then states, “Allow me to accompany you home, it’s starting to get late out.”
You frown at him playfully as you scoff, “I can handle myself, thank you. Besides, I don’t live far from here.” You cluck to Midnight, beginning to lead her away from Bokuto, but he just falls into step beside you and says, “I insist, Miss?”
You stop at the edge of the meadow, tying Midnight not too far from where Jerry was before you reply, “L/n Y/n, but you may call me Y/n.”
Bokuto tries your name out hesitantly, “Y/n, a beautiful name for a beautiful girl. Please allow me to escort you home, I don’t think I would forgive myself if something bad happened to you.”
Bokuto reaches down slightly, plucking one of the large red flowers from its stem before he whispers quietly, “May I?” At your nod, he slides the flower behind your ear, slightly brushing a piece of hair out of your eyes.
You flush as you turn away, reaching for your saddle pad as you mull over his prior question. As you slide your saddle onto Midnight you say, “Alright then, Sir Bokuto Koutarou, you may escort me home.”
The knight just laughs and smiles at your reply, and he walks over to the opposite side as you begin to gather your skirts to get on. He grabs Midnight’s reins and puts his weight in the stirrup you aren’t stepping into to balance the weight of the saddle.
“Thank you,” you say breathlessly as you gather your reins, and Bokuto nods and says, “Of course, Miss. Y/n.”
Bokuto quickly grabs Jerry, swinging his long legs over his horse with ease before trotting up next to you and asking, “Which direction to your house?”
You simply trot away, leaving Bokuto to follow you with a laugh, pushing his horse into a canter to catch up to you.
Bokuto ends up taking the lead, guiding you down the dirt roads toward your house, swapping pleasant conversation as the forest darkened from the sun sinking beyond the horizon.
Your house appears sooner than you would have liked, but before you can start to move to get off, Bokuto jumps off of Jerry and ties him to a nearby fence before walking over to the left side of Midnight.
At this point, you moved to do the same, but as you swing your right leg over Midnight’s rump to get off, your foot tangles in your skirts, causing you to fall back and away from the mare.
Luckily, Bokuto was moving to help you off, and he catches you as you stumble and fall toward the hard ground. You can feel the press of his metal armor digging into your skin, and your eyes are wide as they lock with his own.
Bokuto is looking at you intensely as he helps lift you to your feet and asks, “Are you alright, Miss. Y/n? That was quite the tumble, do you need me to untack your horse for you?”
You give him a kind, close-lipped smile as you gaze up at him, resting one hand on his chest before leaning up to press a gentle and tender kiss on his cheek in a quiet “thank you”.
The knight freezes under your touch, and as you pull away, you can see his reddened cheeks as he shakes his head. Bokuto bows his head before dropping into a kneel and states, “Miss. Y/n, you have been nothing but kind to me. I offer you my services whenever you may need them.”
You just giggle and say, “Rise, my good knight. I appreciate your offer, and I might just have to take you up on that if the chance ever comes. But for now, thank you. May I ask when I will see you again?”
Bokuto doesn’t reply for a second as he walks back over to Jerry, and he simply responds back cheekily over his shoulder, “Perhaps sooner than you may think, milady.”
You roll your eyes as you hear the words you told him get fired back at you, and you grab Midnight’s reins, tying her to the fence as you move to watch Bokuto mount Jerry.
Just as the tall and handsome knight is moving to put his foot in his stirrup, Bokuto stops and turns back to you, his brow furrow slightly in thought.
Four large strides bring him in front of you, and your eyes widen with surprise as one of his arms wraps around your waist, tugging you to his chest in a swift pull as his other hand grips your chin.
He leans down in a sure movement, his lips meeting yours with a firm but pleasant hold. Bokuto’s lips are warm and sweet against your own, and your eyes flutter shut as you catch a glimpse of the orange sunset that reminds you of the taste of Bokuto’s kiss.
The kiss ends much too soon for your liking, and the knight pulls away swiftly, a wink shot in your direction as Bokuto swings up and into his saddle. He pulls the knot to loosen Jerry’s reins, and as he turns to move away he calls out, “Until next time, milady.”
