Art gift 103. The common housefly is thought of as a pest and disease carrier, but they are much more than that. They evolved 60 million years before humans, so they knows a thing or two about life. This female can walk on smooth walls, even on ceilings, thanks to the tiny claws and sticky pads on her feet. Receptors on her legs let her taste things just by walking on them. Her big eyes have 4000 facets, so she see things from thousands of slightly different angles at once. And she processes visual information seven times faster than humans, so it’s like everything around her is moving in slow-motion. No wonder it’s hard to catch a fly! Houseflies don’t bite—they can’t even chew. Their mouths are like vacuum cleaners. They mix solid food with saliva and suck it up like a smoothie. In the course of her short life, a female will lay about nine thousands eggs, in batches of about 100 at a time. Those eggs, and the larvae that hatch from them, are important, nutritious food for other small creatures, and do good work in the environment digesting rotting waste. The common housefly is by no means endangered—in fact, a world thrown out of balance by mass extinction could kill off creatures that depend on her larvae for sustenance, which means houseflies may thrive far more than humans as the climate catastrophe unfolds. There’s still a lot we can do to avert the worst of the potential damage. Toward that end… . I’m making seven 4 x 6” archival prints of this beauty. Today I received an order of silver that I had made a huge mistake ordering. I was in a rush to get back to Maebh and putting the order through quickly and I ordered standard sterling silver rather than the recycled sterling ecosilver I usually use. It was a decent bit of metal too probably the next two months worth of stock 🙁 I nearly cried! I phoned my supplier to ask about swapping it and as I was expecting to be honest, I was told that most of it would then be melted down before being resold as it was cut to my measurements. I would get scrap value losing about 50% of the value and perfectly good silver would have to be refined again with all the inherent wasted energy. So to truly be able to say I am using eco silver over the next 2 months I would be wasting energy in terms of delivery back to the refinery, and then the refining energy and I admit I would be quite a bit out of pocket too. I don’t really think thats the environmentally friendly answer.  I could of course have not said anything, and just continued on, but that feels wrong and I always want to try my best to be honest and transparent! So I’m sorry!  So what I have decided is, I will use this metal, and since it is cheaper then I would have paid for the ecosilver, I will for April and May, donate 15% of my silver sales from my own site and 10% of my silver sales from @etsy to an environmental charity, and I’m going to choose @xrebellionuk  to donate to in April and @friends_earth in May.  #nogreenwashing #ethicalshopping #mistakes #tryingmybest #ecosilver #silver #donate #environment #environmentallyfriendly #footprint (at Caerphilly) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNHz5XJANzj/?igshid=1unvbnu2kqwl0
