I had the privilege of discussing with the talented MetalMatter team from Lehigh University and the University of the Philippines Diliman, who are working on an innovative project focusing on the circular economy of aluminum in Metro Manila. Led by students Priya Blaise, Ayushka Dhakal, Cherrie Ruan, and Kat Van Buskirk, this project aims to explore the use of friction-extruded aluminum. This process reduces carbon emissions and enables the use of 100% recycled aluminum. They aim to assess the feasibility of using these extrudates in functional facades and living walls within Metro Manila’s urban canyons. Beyond environmental sustainability, the project may explore inclusiveness by opening new economic opportunities for local communities by segregating aluminum wastes and processing them into artisanal or architectural products. This forward-thinking approach could pave the way for localized aluminum recycling and its integration into sustainable building products. A special thank you to their academic advisor, Mr. Nick Rockell, for the opportunity to contribute to this inspiring initiative.
