Boomkat Product Review: Very rare venture from Swedish a/v master Kent Tankred, deploying his “concresizer” image/sound mangler in properly free adventures between absorbing noise textures and expressive organ and rhythm excursions - RIYL Pan Sonic, NYZ, CC Hennix, Russell Haswell, Daphne Oram. EMS graduate of the ‘70s, key member of The Freq_Out Orchestra and half of The Sons of God with Leif Elggren; Kent Tankred’s reputation in the Swedish underground is inversely proportionate to his sparse handful of works, best highlighted in 1995’s ‘Ordinary Things’ for Flykingen Records. ‘There Is Nothing To Attain’ is his first new release since 2010’s CDr of the same name, and supplies a 2 hour canvas ideal for exploring his wildly variegated sprawl of post-human styles, where he clearly relishes the possibility of his machines to make freaky as fuck, outlandish electronic sounds that exist in the space between music and non-music. He’s been at this since the early ‘70s and by this point you can trust that Tankred knows what he’s up to, or, then again, maybe doesn’t - as his work is full of an intuitive, inexplicable vitality that feels as ancient and primitive, as it does advanced. Tankred’s music isn't for everyone, but for those who like to be challenged and poked, it's a vital trip. Tankred doesn't shy on the track lengths either, with most running into ten+ minutes, variously doing JCB-scale dentistry with ‘Kökkenmödding 1’ and sharply contrasting with the Hennix-meets-NYZ-alike organ vamps of ‘PSR-266’, but also reserving the right to go stringently minimal on the absorbing tracts of ‘Pulsar’ and ‘There Is Nothing To Attain 2’. His rhythmic/percussive provilicites come to life in ‘Dialog’ and there’s an unmistakeable sort of far northerly dread scope to the seething drone of ‘Obsession 2’ and to-the-bone abstraction of ‘Pots’ that surely resonates with Pan Sonic, primed for those who really like to get their ear’s teef into it and swill it around. Incredible set. https://www.instagram.com/p/CXpFBtRsqYh/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Holidays.
Thanks to everyone for their support in this most difficult and tumultuous year. I am grateful for my health, a roof over my head and for music. I am grateful for you all. My time in lockdown was actually busier than ever - I completed work on scoring Archer Season 11. Dicktown, another animated show which I scored, premiered on FX. I completed Oscillospira, an epic collaboration with Simon Steensland, which was released on Ipecac Records. I launched Ectopic Ents in Bandcamp. In the “serious” music realm of my work, I completed a graphic score commission for Decibel New Music Ensemble. I created an arrangement of William Basinski’s “Disintegration Loops IV” for chamber orchestra. I got about halfway through a major commission for Alarm Will Sound, which will premiere in 2021. And I worked on two new compositions for string quartet. I created the soundscape for Anne Senstad’s immense Radical Light installation in Tallinn, and worked as audio consultant on several of her short films. I also worked on several symphonic arrangements of Foetus compositions with Simon Hanes, working long distance via Skype. We also worked up some new arrangements of material for JG Thirlwell + Ensemble. I completed work on the second Xordox album, which is now in production and will be released on Editions Mego in 2021. I wrote a bunch of material for Melvins, which I hope crystallizes one day. I collaborated on a track with Rabit. I contributed to the new Matmos album, Freq_out returned with an ambitious new model. I was asked to mix some songs for a highly regarded group which will be revealed at a later date. 2020 saw the release of the Hal Willner-produced Marc Bolan tribute album, on which I made arrangements of songs for Marc Almond and Emily Haines. Tragically, we lost Hal to the Covid 19 pandemic, along with over a million worldwide and counting.
On the performance front. the JG Thirlwell & Ensemble London show was postponed (twice). Some big career retrospective concerts for the Melbourne Festival were postponed.
And for the future? I just began work on Archer Season 12. I hope to release the first Archer soundtrack in 2021. I’ll be recording an album of my string quartets with Mivos Quartet as soon as it’s safe (we were originally scheduled to make this recording in September 2020). Also in 2021, look for the reissue of the Foetus album ACHE in white vinyl. The new Tredici Bacci album should drop in 2021, which contains two songs I co-wrote with Simon Hanes, and a Foetus cover (!). Simon and I also have a whole album of songs written for the female voice, which we are slowly recording. I’ll be releasing the final installment of my first art print series. And I am also itching to finally release the "Cholera Nocebo" album. I have started on a third Xordox album. I have also started work on new Foetus material, some of which I hope to record with orchestra, with a view to a 2025 release.
So onward and upward. Health and happiness in 2021. Stay safe and fly high.

freq-out is a sound art collective founded and curated by CM Von Hausswolff  in 2003, and it primarily creates site specific sound installations. JG Thirlwell has been a member of the group since its inception.
The latest iteration of freq_out is freq_out 11, designed for interactivity on the internet through the Copenhagen based online radio station The Lake. It consists of a web-mixer and twelve unique and looped minor compositions that may be heard separately or altogether, depending on the mixer faders positions and the web-composer (this being the person behind the computer of course).
Participating artists are JG Thirlwell, Jana Winderen, Mike Harding, Maia Urstad, Permagnus Lindborg, BJ Nilsen, Christine Ödlund, Finnbogi Petursson, Tommi Grönlund & Petteri Nisunen, Anna Ceeh & Franz Pomassl, Jacob Kirkegaard and Kent Tankred.
Go to freq_out 11 here To operate the mixer, move the small squares up and down with your cursor - those are your faders.

The new freq_out LP contains the studio mix and a live recording of the first permanent installation of a freq_out piece called freq_out 1.2 ∞ SKANDION. The multi-channel work is up and running in the entrance garden at the Skandion Klinik, a new hospital for cancer treatment in Uppsala, Sweden.
The freq_out project has existed since 2003, when Carl Michael von Hausswolff was invited to Copenhagen to invent and install a sound-art installation. He divided up the audible sonic register into 12 parts and asked 12 artists, musicians, composers, and architects to each accept one of the 12 parts and compose a sonic piece from it. The result became 12 compositions/artworks that were simultaneously played on 12 different sound systems in the art space of Charlottenborg, thus becoming one piece. Since then, freq_out has also been installed in Oslo, Berlin, Paris, Budapest, Chiang Mai, Kortrijk, Stockholm, Amsterdam, and Marrakesh.
The artists who contributed to the work are Jana Winderen, Maia Urstad, Christine Ödlund, Brandon LaBelle, JG Thirlwell, Petteri Nisunen, Tommi Grönlund, The Sons of God, Franz Pomassl, Anna Ceeh, Mike Harding, Finnbogi Pétursson, BJ Nilsen, Jacob Kirkegaard, PerMagnus Lindborg, and Carl Michael von Hausswolff. It’s released on Sep 25 2015 by Ash International and you can order it from Touch in Europe or Forced Exposure in the US.

08/02/14 One of my colleagues from the freq_out sound-art collective,  Jana Winderen, has a sound installation in an eight block tunnel under Park Avenue in Manhattan while it is closed off as part of the city's Summer Streets program for three Saturday mornings on August 2, 9 and 16, 2014. One traverses thru eight sonic stations bathed in undulating blue light while the tunnel is enveloped with her precise, disorienting underwater field recordings, which were captured by hydrophonic microphones ; rich sounds of rolling waves give way to eerie recordings of shrimp, krill, whales and other aquatic life, revealing an ominous otherworldly composition.

freq_out is a sound installation comprised of 12 individual sound works each utilizing a specific frequency range, made on site, and amplified to act as a single, generative sound-space. Each artist is assigned a frequency range with which to work. This process is carried out in situ, each using a workstation consisting of a mixing desk and PA system. All the resulting compositions are then amplified together in the space to create a sound installation or performance.
freq_out is curated by Carl Michael Von Hausswolf and the particpants are JG Thirlwell, Finnbogi Peterson, BJ Nilsen, Jana Winderen, Jacob Kirkegaard, Brandon LaBelle, Tommi Gronlund and Petteri Nisunen, Permagnus Lindborg, Maia Urstad, Mike Harding, Franz Pomassl, Kent Tankred and Christine Odlund.
This video was created by Finnbogi Peterson at freq_out 8 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 2011. There are two freq_out's in the planning stage for 2014.
