LE BONNET ROUGE ! It was great to see this on an American patriotic design at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Museum: back when we used to openly borrow symbols from Revolutionary France.
This was near the Kentucky in the War of 1812 exhibit, where a manniquin looks sadly at some mysterious maple(?) candies that he can never reach. (There was a car flying a Canadian flag in the parking lot, who knows.)

They also had some manniquins representing British forces, with Broad Arrow and Board of Ordnance markings on their equipment (the other B.O.)

The museum collection is modest, but they had some nice displays of flintlock firearms with paper cartridges and a good selection of books in the giftshop.

A Day Trip to Frenchtown, New Jersey
Even though I’ve lived in New Jersey for almost half my life, there are many corners of this small state I still haven’t visited. Enter Frenchtown, a small river town I learned about randomly on social media a few years ago. Located on the westernmost border of the state, this charming borough immediately went on my list of places I wanted to visit, with its historical roots, eclectic vibe, and…

Lift me up Via Flickr: (In Explore, 4/2/24) Nowadays you can see bicycles in the most unusual places. I’ve seen them chained to a terrace outside very old flats, and even one in the upper window of a very old house. I’d never seen one as part of the street furniture, though, as if it were a statue or a public fountain. A few weeks ago I saw this huge one hanging on an arch separating two streets. Art adapting to time, I guess.

New tattoo! Ginkgo leaves, on my lower leg. My first no-color tattoo. Frenchtown Tattoo Co was at the Foundry Art Center block party yesterday doing flash tattoos. ❤️

“Arrest Made In Gasoline Thefts,” Sault Star. October 22, 1932. Page 6. ---- Espanola, Oct. 19. - On Monday evening, Art Lachance was arrested by Provincial Constable Stewart of Little Current and Provincial Constable M. L. Moroney of town on a charge of stealing $10 worth of gasoline from H. Goodman and Co’s store at Frenchtown. Entrance was gained to the tank by a skeleton key. This has been going on for considerable time. Lachance was remanded for seven days, being held in Sudbury and will appear in court next Wednesday. Other charges may follow.

Dear Listeners,
Happy 2024 to you, in all its weirdness.
I’m working on NEW MUSIC and will be sharing little bits of it and my process with you as I go along. For now, I’m putting the videos on Instagram and my Facebook Page and will link to them on my blog (sorry I let that lapse, somehow I managed to forget blogging existed). Here’s the first, a snippet of a song with the working title “Supernumerary”
instagram
What else? There are a few concerts in the immediate future:
March 15 - ArtYard - Frenchtown, NJ
March 16 - Underground Arts - Philadelphia, PA
March 17 - Le Poisson Rouge - NYC, NY
March 21 - Big Ears Festival - Knoxville, TN
The show in Philadelphia is opening up for my old friends, the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. My connections to members of that band go back 20+ years to my 964 Natoma days. I first encountered Nils Frykdahl in the previous millennium while he was playing amplified flute in the rafters of the warehouse along with Dan Rathburn making noise and sparks with an arc welder that illuminated butoh performer Shinichi Moma Koga contorting himself on a metal grate. Anyway, Sleepytime is a delightful group of very talented avant garde art rockers and this year needs more of their unfiltered catharsis. I immediately said yes when they asked if I would play for one of their East Coast dates to support their new album.
The Big Ears festival is something I’ve wanted to play at for almost a decade, so I am beyond thrilled to be added this year. I’ll be sticking around for the festival to hear as many of the other artists as possible, it’s off the hook, check it out https://bigearsfestival.org/
More concerts dates are coming in the autumn. East, west, middle, as many as I can fit in ;-)
Thank you for listening!
celloly yours, Z

I had to go to Michigan today for Business Reasons, and my wife drove me because my car is still being fixed for an issue under warranty. I was able to enjoy more of the trip as a passenger and smiled to see signs for Frenchtown (Charter Township)—just like in the War of 1812!
I can't believe how close I am to River Raisin National Battlefield!!! This is even more exciting news than the fact that the same town also has approximately one million recreational marijuana dispensaries. (Yes Michigan, I have seen the 'Welcome Oh-HIGH-oans!' billboard).
It was a very scenic drive, crossing over the land divided by huge rivers in the vicinity of the Lost Pennisula, and we went over Glass City Skyway bridge, crossing the Maumee River with the museum ships of the National Museum of the Great Lakes moored below.

Adventuring on a Monday is tough, because so many things are closed. We found a little vegan cafe in Clifton, NJ, and now we're gonna check out Frenchtown to see if there's anything cool.
