And I also plan to do a little tumbly post about all the amazing artists who have made thumbnail & promo art for me because they deserve that recognition too!) p.s. this is the part where I sneak in an announcement that I'm planning a new series for with a big ensemble cast, hoping to start this summer

Do It Anyway

I love the audio series , Corollary, that @frenchiefitzhere has created. I strongly encourage everyone to give it a listen. I loved it enough to want to write some fanfiction about it, and I'm putting it here because I can! Go listen to at least the first ep, (although I challenge you to stop there) before you read this. I didn't write much in the way of spoilers in general. Just for that first one.

What Randi was thinking prior to that first audio.

Miranda sat cross legged on her sofa, mug in hand. She stared into the steaming tea as though it were a scrying mirror, as though it would give her the answers she was looking for before she took a sip. Miranda, Randi to most who knew her, (except her parents who would always use the full version no matter how much she tried to convince them otherwise) rested the cup in the dip between her legs. Her shoulders relaxed slightly. Little feet patted across the floor, and a sudden “pumpfh” on the cushion next to her let her know one of her cats had launched up to hang out. A little “mrrow” told her who it was without the need to look, and Randi smiled faintly.

“Hey Roxy. Want some head scratches? Of course you do, when don’t you?” She gave a quiet chuckle. 

She reached down and gently stroked behind the calico’s ears. Roxy purred, and settled in close to Randi’s thigh. 

“Just what this couch needs, more claw marks.” Randi took another sip of tea and looked down at the cat. 

The comment was meant to be lighthearted, but Randi’s voice slipped into a whisper at the end. She coughed. Randi closed her eyes for a second. When she opened them, she concentrated on a patch of gray fur harder than she needed to. She focused on the blend into the white that bordered it and blinked. When Randi could trust her voice again, she spoke to the cat. Really, it was a conversation with herself, but having cats is a really good way to have half a conversation and talk things through.

“I’m gonna call my neighbor today.” Randi started,  “I…I can’t do it anymore, Rox. It’s getting hard. Y’know, it was interesting at first, fun even. Spotting things. But now I hate how I’m feeling. I’m a good person, Roxy. I like good things happening to people. I enjoy seeing them happy! But the last few months I don’t want good things happening to them. Don’t get me wrong I don’t want bad things for them either. Even though it means…what it means. Maybe no good things for me? I don’t know. I just want them to coast along neutrally now. I hate the anxiety I feel when something good happens over there.”

Randi finished off the tea and leaned forward to put the cup on the table. Roxy mewled in protest and sat up, Randi snorted.

“Oh sorry, did I disturb you, princess? Tough.”

The comment didn’t have quite the bite it normally would. Randi couldn’t muster the playfulness today, even for her furry companion. She sighed and went back to petting the indignant cat. Mollified somewhat, Roxy sank back into her Loaf Cat position. Randi didn’t really notice. She was deep in thought. 

“You know what’s worse than the anxiety though? The guilt. The guilt that I still feel happy when something  good happens to me.” Randi stopped stroking Roxy, hand just resting on her head, her eyes glazed over. “Because I know something bad is coming their way. It feels like I’m benefitting from their misery somehow. That I don’t deserve my happiness if it comes at a cost to theirs. I know it’s outside my control and I don’t get a choice. Logic doesn’t have much to do with how I feel though, or whatever’s happening. I need to work it out. I can’t keep living like this, Roxy.”

Randi swiped a tear threatening to spill away from her eyelash with the side of her thumb. When she spoke again, her voice was a little croaky.

“ Yeah, the guilt’s worse. I’ll call them today, say my piece, and if they believe me, great. If not, I can say I tried, if only for my own piece of mind. I’ll still try to figure it out on my own.” Randi took a sideways look at the cat. “Would I be an awful coward if I made it easy on myself and called when I knew they were all out? Just - left a message? I don’t actually wanna try and have that conversation on the phone.”

Roxi continued purring, oblivious to her live-in maid’s state of mind. 

Randi carried on stroking her little cat’s head, up the velvety ears and down, preoccupied. She leaned back to look at the ceiling as she soaked up the comfort of the warm furry friend next to her.

“Yeah, it might make me a coward. I’m gonna do it anyway.”

I LOVE MAKING LISTENER CHARACTERS

I love the idea of annex being a smug, asshole and that’s the reason they never got promoted or anything. BUT I have so much love for the idea of an Annex that was too nice and couldn’t command enough attention to even be considered for a commandant.

I adore the idea of a short noir, getting all of the short jokes from Aries, and the idea of a noir being a fucking golden retriever for Aries

I love all of my mutuals and their redacted listener characters y’all are genuinely some incredible artists and writers (and a songwriter??) that I have the privilege of seeing on my dash

I love all of you that make diverse characters, I love all of you that make self inserts, and all the characters that are one step away from self inserts

I love that some of you were inspired to make your own characters to have listener characters to so people could learn about something you loved in a different storybook

Listener characters are just as valuable as regular characters to me, because someone gave you a prompt and A) You decided you were going to act and embody it because you’re that awesome or B) You created a collaborative character that you both learn about as the series goes on, and both you and or that listener character grow and it’s really neat to me.
