“The original Adele, Ms Moyet has a fantastic voice – soulful, bluesy, a powerful female voice always sung in her local vernacular rather than adopting an Americanised twang like many of her British and Irish contemporaries. This album, her 7th, is not forging any new ground but then neither would you expect or want it to. . It’s a modern torch song album, a theme portrayed in the inner sleeve photos of theatrical dressing rooms and the like, as well as the musical arrangements. Overall the sensibility of the album is similar to her previous release, Voice, a collection of classic songs, some jazz standards, some more unusual choices (Purcell’s Dido’s Lament) intelligently arranged and produced by Anne Dudley, and not dissimilar to Hometime, her first comeback in 2002 after a long record company legal dispute. Her follow up to The Turn, The Minutes, deemed in the music press as her ‘second comeback’ was a return to her synthpop roots. . The last three tracks on the album were written for a stage play Moyet performed in with Dawn French called Smaller, written by Carmel Morgan and directed by Kathy Burke. Her occasional collaborations with French and Saunders, Dawn in particular, go way back to the mid-80s. The world could do with another one right now. . The one constant throughout her up and down career however, is her voice.
