So what have I been up to since my last actual post.Â
So I graduated with a Bachelorâs Degree in Education here - getting a Second Class First. I got a job at one of the most expensive early childhood schools, survived 2-3 years in a COVID riddled world in a field where ill-treatment of teaching staff and payment cuts were a thing. Itâll be my 6th year of teaching by the time I hit 31 this year - I graduated late in life. I lost a lot of time but gained so much experience in return.
I am also still single, still havenât met anyone who even remotely liked me back. Which is kinda sad but I kinda am sort of like yeah that happens. Probably my fault cause I canât make female friends cause Iâm pretty grumpy and I complain a lot. Like an angry cat who has seen too much abuse. Â
I walked away from a 2 year friendship. That was probably the most devastating, and hardest thing Iâll ever do in my entire life considering he was causing me so much grief and pain that legitimately hurt. He wasnât the first friendship but he was the first IRL friendship that I had to cut off - imagine a gangrenous limb, itâs gonna hurt but as time went on, I havenât felt too bad about it. We were the same sort of mind, and maybe it was dangerous to be around someone who was just like you. Mind thee, I did have actual reasons to walk away.Â
I should get back into drawing one of these days. I miss ink work. Iâll pick it up again - soon!
To all who I made friends on this semi-hellsite, I miss you. Iâm sorry I never kept in touch. I am actually still around - look for freifechter on twitch, youâll find me there or on twitter. I shit post there still.Â

Joachim Meyerâs The Art Of Combat in Full Color!
âThis is a curious colourized version of StraĂburg Fechmeister and Freifechter Joachim Meyer's 1570 treatise "GrĂŒndtliche Beschreibung/ der freyen Ritterlichen vnnd Adelichen kunst des Fechtens/ in allerley gebreuchlichen Wehren/ mit vil schönen vnd nĂŒtzlichen Figuren "
The copy is dated to 1574 on the inside, with the name Dietrich Görge Bricke added, followed by a Freifechter poem mentioning the griffin and the feder.
The lettering of the images is curious sometimes and does not always match up the way they are "supposed to". A few pages have also apparently gotten loose and are in the wrong place.
When illustrations are repeated, they are still given a completely new set of colours, sometimes giving us three colour variants of the same image.
Interesting to note is that the cover has an imprint of a woman holding a sword, standing next to, assumedly, her husband.
Also interesting to note, is that at this time, 1574 (assuming it was colourized then) the perception was that sometimes fencers wore thin gloves, that dusacks sometimes were covered in leather, and that flail heads were seemingly made out of leather.
The book is kept at the University Library of Leipzig, Germany.â
Found here, but you can also see it here and here and some further details here.
Below are just some of the images that seemed interesting.
In case you want to learn more about it I suggest checking out the Joachim Meyer wiktenauer page, as well as any of the printed versions of his work, the Joachim Meyerâs Rappier HEMA group and this youtube playlist on Meyerâs rapier or the dussack and halberd tags here as well as the general Meyer tag as well.
P.S. Happy pride everyone!

Took my bland absolute fencing mask and turned it into a much better looking mask. I went with the blue and yellow to have my favorite colors which are also my family crest colors on the mask. The symbol I made up as a young child for this sword fighting group we had called the red dragons. However each person had their own dragon color. Mine was yellow even though I didn't like yellow at the time. Ironically my English friend pointed out it looks like the swedish flag. If I get to the Swordfish HEMA Tournament it would be amazing to wear this. Lmao.

Joachim Meyer info
The long sword basics used by my club
Joachim Meyer was a product of the guild system of learning how to fence, of gaining qualifications to instruct, and he became a master in the Freifechter guild. In 1570, he wrote a book setting out his own method of teaching fencing with a variety of weapons. For the longsword, he describes the basic four strikes as the:
Oberhaw (cutting from above)
Mittelhaw (cutting across)
Underhaw (cutting from below)
Zornhaw (cutting downward along a specific 45 degree line)
In a similar fashion to Hans Sachsâs description where the Flugelhaw is an example of the Underhaw, Meyer lists the Zornhaw which is an example of the Oberhaw. Why is this?
The Oberhaw is just any cut from above, with either edge (or either flat). The Zornhaw, according to Meyer, is a very specific strike: it is a long edge cut that descends along the Zornlini (the Zorn line), which he depicts as a 45 degree line in his cutting diagram. The same cutting diagram suggests that the Oberhaw is a straight vertical cut, although many of his stucke, techniques and sequences seem to involve cuts from above that are not perfectly vertical.

Andre Paurnfeind - a Freifechter, fencing master, and personal guard
Andre Paurnfeind â a Freifechter, fencing master, and personal guard
Little is told by the current state of research about the author of of the first known printed book explaining Liechtenauerâs teaching: Andre Paurnfeind (Pawrnfeyndt, Bauernfeind, Paurenfeint). In the first article of this series on his fencing with a single handed weapon I will provide some background about the man.
In current literature up to 2016 Andre Paurnfeind is listed as to stem fromâŠ

Further Insights on the competitive fencing events historically known as the Fechtschulen.
While the earliest historic mentions of competitive fighting events in Germany can be traced back many centuries, these events consistently changed and evolved with the War practices and weapons systems used throughout European history.
The period of the fencing events being discussed here, will loosely be attributed to a 200 year time frame, within the Early Modern Period, specifically the late 15th century through the late 17th century.
Early in this period, the fencers would gather together in the German cities and towns, and hold a display or demonstration of their Fencing Arts. The events were often known as 'Schirmschulen', but this word suddenly seems to have fallen out of use and was replaced with the word 'Fechtschulen' around the turn of the 16th century.

Karl Timlichâs System from 1796 âAbhandlung der Fechtkunst auf den Hieb zu Fuss und zu Pferdeâ Born Czech, (Bohemia 1744) Karl Timlich was an Austrian cavalry officer, and later teacher of Kaiser Leibguard. Being one of the first modern sabre fencing treatises I have studied. This one is very interesting, as TImlich is a little bit like Meyer, he presents a very diverse set of possible, for hm fencing is like a science, should be studied broadly. This approach allows a very diverse view presented in his research. This will be an introductory class, so people with no or full equipment and with or without HEMA experience are welcome. Level: Beginner Equipment: None
âThe tricks of the tradeâ on Sabre âThe tricks of the tradeâ seminar would be a more advanced seminar, consisting of lots of curiosities you can see in many regional sabre fencing of eastern Europe. We will learn many interesting actions that are ascribed to Caucasian, Tartars, Ottomans, Hungarians, Russians and Poles that have been described or just even mentioned in many memoirs, treatises of the 16th to 18th century. This class will be a more advanced one â therefore I would require at least a fencing mask and cup. Level: Intermediate Equipment: Mask, cup (groin protector)

âSo, some of the work I've done over the years. For those who don't really know me, this is me:
Here are most of my articles.
I'll point out in particular my articles on Meyer, especially "Meyer's Masters" and the two "Pilgrimage" articles about Basel and StraĂburg, as well as the history of his Von Solms-treatise. The Onion Series on longsword I am told have helped quite a few people starting out with HEMA, and it has some useful stuff even for experienced fencers, especially regarding grips. Focusing on arms, the article on the Dusack - A weapon of War, I am also quite happy with, as well as the article The Whatchamacallit-sword.
The three articles on HEMA Pedagogics I am proud of, and I am currently expanding on them into a book. The two articles The Rose and the Pentagram, and the one on Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa are a bit on the fringe, but I am happy with them too as they are so curious. Likewise, the article on Sami staff fencing, Skalastet, I am extremely happy with, as peculiar as it is. The article on Fairbairn Sykes should interest a few. It has been read by tens of thousands. It is one of my most read articles.
http://hroarr.com/author/roger-n/
Additionally, I have posted two booklets, one on Meyer's dusack, and one on his quarterstaff, both about 30 pages each. They are a good starter to get you going, and the latter will keep you busy for years. http://hroarr.com/study/manuals-books/new-manual-section/
I am considering rewriting and putting some of this material into a printed book.
Furthermore, here are some YouTube playlists on Meyer's polearms, including quarterstaff, halberd and pike:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1Envup5Ah8&list=PLhDqahaWKKNbFyjsHTQXlk3uwvr4Uy0KC
(The technique videos from 2011 are of course in many cases outdated here, but might still be of interest. Also the victim is of course far too passive)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtZi71ynJRQ&index=2&list=PLhDqahaWKKNZ29WN4GpLhBec7gy95cTW_
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1Envup5Ah8&list=PLhDqahaWKKNYtGJ54LsitEG0lyp8fGQjS
Finally, like already mentioned, I am currently working on a book on HEMA Pedagogics and Teaching Methodology. I am also working on a number of topics that will be articles eventually, and in some cases, lectures adding to the three I already offer; "The Life of Freifechter and Fechtmeister Joachim Meyer", "Studying the artwork of Joachim Meyer's Fencing Treatise of 1570" and "Research Methods and tools for understanding combat manuals".
Analysis of artwork in Renaissance fencing treatises Antique Renaissance Fencing Swords (Fechtschwerter) Historical artwork depicting the martial traditions and culture of Europe The HEMA Pioneers of the 19th and early 20th Century The Martial Arts of Man vs Beast Research Methodology for HEMA The Change From Oral to Written Culture in European Martial Arts History The Life and Works of Renaissance Fencing Master Joachim Meyer The Martial Arts System of Renaissance Fencing Master Joachim Meyer (Unarmed, dagger, dusack, longsword, quarterstaff, halberd & pike) The Martial Arts History of Sweden The Renaissance Fencing Guilds
Of course I need to finish the Onion series as well as the one on Meyer's polearms, and I should get my whole interpretation on Meyer's dagger out there too. And also add one or two more workshops to my list, perhaps breaking out something from the fairly intense and packed workshops already on the list. http://hroarr.com/community/events/instructors/norling-roger-gffg-hemac//Â â
