Zutara/Azulaang - life as an ambassador

Azula: “So new sister, how’s it going with being the ambassador of the fire nation?”

Katara: “Overwhelming and unorthodox but it’s got a lot of perks. Some of the fire nation people like me, some don’t, some of my tribe people, including Sokka, approve of my position, some don’t. Regardless, with this amount of resources Zuko and I can do a lot of good and in time, both of our nations will come to more peaceful terms.”

Azula: “Spunky.”

Katara: “How about yourself, what’s it like traveling with Aang as a freelance hero and the first firebending nomad?”

Azula: “More fun then what my father lead me to believe. With my chakras cleared I have more life choices then I could possibly handle. Unlike the air nomads from years ago, Aang and I are doing hero work for the people of all nations, working wherever there is corruption and discord to restore balance and peace and use them to dominate the earth and we get most of the glory. We try checking in on Zuzu every now and then and see if he didn’t destroy the palace or he didn’t end up getting assassinate.”

Katara: “Great. It’s good that Aang found someone he can share his life with. Even if it’s someone everyone least expects.”

Azula: “Right back at you.”

Katara and Azula pick up cups of Jin Se tea.

Azula: “Here’s to our unusual but enjoyable new lives.”

Katara: “And our determination to change the world for the better.”

Zuko asks Aang for help in finding Azula. Aang uses energybending to track down Azula but he accidentally astral projects into Azula’s mind and got more then what he bargained for. He sees and learns all of her memories, experience, wisdom, skills, knowledge and perspective. Due to Azula being the descendant of Aang’s predecessor, Roku, Aang entering her mind has left a side effect, they have a strong spiritual bond, which allows them to understand each other on an empathy level, allows them to come closer then they ever have with anyone else, their spirit bond slowly combines with a more intimate bond and as a bonus, Aang would actually know when Azula is lying and vice versa, in a way Toph never even could.

After Aang tells Zuko about Azula’s current location. Zuko decides to take up the mantle of the blue spirit once again and secretly journeys to ember islands where Azula was surprisingly residing all along in a place so obvious. He brought with him the scroll that was delivered to him by Iroh somehow. Zuko gave Azula the scroll. Azula demanded to know who he is and what this is for, but the blue spirit said nothing left the scene without a trace. She reads: “You need to know the story of your great-grandfather’s demise. It will reveal your own destiny. The fire sages keep the secret history in the Dragonbone Catacombs.” Unable to make sense of the meaning of the message, a confused and annoyed Azula decided to investigate his great-grandfather’s death and ventured down the Dragonbone Catacombs. She found and read the final testament of Fire Lord Sozin which details about his youth, errors, and regrets. In particular, he wrote about his friend, Avatar Roku, he expanded upon their childhood friendship, their separation, later quarrels, and eventually Roku’s death. When Azula read the part where Sozin left Roku to die, it reminded her of the time Mai and Ty lee left her but Sozin’s reasons for doing the same contract to why Mai and Ty lee left her and this began to eat at her once again. Sozin continued with how he started the century-long war by decimating the air nomads in hopes the avatar would die with them. However, at the end of his memoirs, Sozin was still alive and in the end he kept searching for the avatar.

Confused again, Azula snuck into Zuko’s bed chambers and confronted Zuko, outraged, and accusing him of sending Azula messages telling her that the scroll told her little more than what she already knew. Zuko calmly stated that he was referring to there mother’s grandfather, Avatar Roku. Azula is over come with shock and horror, even more so then Zuko after he learned about Roku. Zuko told Azula good and evil were always fighting inside Azula for it was her nature just like his. But he said that the bright side was that he and Azula could restore honor to the Fire Nation and bring about peace together and that she did not need to manipulate him into being a better ruler. Zuko went back to bed, speechless and in awe, Azula begins to depart from his room and Zuko said. “Sleep well Azula.”

Azula began to think about what he said, she remembered that the avatar masters all elements, has knowledge and experience of all nations, Aang managed to defeat Ozai, the man more powerful then herself, Zuko and possibly even Iroh and siphoned his bending with an unknown but unique and powerful type of bending. Azula was always taught to alley with the most powerful but who could be more powerful then the avatar? Azula then decides if Zuko cannot rise and rule with fear, perhaps Aang will. So she uses her smoke and shadow tactics and holds Zuko hostage to draw Aang out. Aang and Azula then start a psychological war. Azula tries to bring out the bad in Aang while Aang tries to bring out the good in Azula.

I enjoy the several fanfics of Aang posing as a Guru for Azula and he gets Azula to master her chakras. They also each have it’s ideas on what very things that block her chakras. I also imagine that Aang and Azula freely living the life as nomads but have the heroic mindset of avatars. I also used the Korrasami ending scene and placed it with Azulaang. Meaning that Aang and Azula take a need vacation the spirit world just the two of them.

Azulaang - Scars

Azula: “So...um...I’m told that you harbor some scars caused by my lightning.”

Aang: “That’s correct.”

Azula: “I don’t know if this is forward but...could I...see...them?”

Aang: “Sure.” (removes his top robes and turns his back toward Azula)

Azula gazes deeply at the scar. Her lip quivered as she mildly flashbacks of the lighting attack she inflicted in the catacombs. With a smile on her face. She shakily reaches the scar, tempting to touch it but declined.

Azula: “Why?”

Aang: “Hmm?” (Turns front toward Azula)

Azula: “How can you even bare to look at me? I did this to you! If it weren’t for miss peasant, you’d be six feet under and the avatar cycle would be toast!”

Aang: “I couldn’t bare to see you suffer the way you did.”

Azula: “Even if though I technically deserve it?”

Aang: “I can’t explain it..”

Azula: “Of course you can! I put you through the most hell out of everyone else! Don’t you tell me it’s ‘the way of the monks.’ Not even they would fight for lost causes! There’s something more there! Spit it out!”

Aang: “I guess when Ozai held you hostage. I began to realize you mean more to me then I expected. I know it’s not an accident that you and I have a spiritual bond due to you being the descendent of the avatar before me. And I’d be the first to tell when you lie because of it, no matter how good you are at it.”

Azula: “I still can’t tell if I should be creeped out or flattered.”

Aang: “Well...the latter does work both ways, if that’ll comfort you.”

Azula: “I wouldn’t be surprised if see our link as a curse and a burden.”

Aang: “I don’t see it that way. It brought me closer, it changed how I view you...how I feel about you.”

Azula: “You can’t mean that. You wouldn’t mean that if the bond didn’t exist.”

Aang: “It’s like I said, I don’t think any of this was accident. I think you’re meant to be the person most special to me. When Roku told me how he was able to marry Ta Min and still be able to master all chakras. He said that Ta Min wasn’t an earthly tether at all but something entirely opposite, he calls this special entity, a beacon of ascension. Zula, I think your meant to be my beacon of ascension.”

Azula: “You think?”

Aang: (briefly closed his eyes and sighed) “I know you are.”

Azula could feel his assurance in that response.

Azula: “Even after I literally scarred you for life, I’m lucky enough to be the avatar’s motivating bimbo.”

Aang: “I think a beacon of ascension is more then that.”

Azula: “Come on. I’ve been stripped of my royal status due to Zuzu being fire lord. I’ve been sentenced to do community service by traveling with you, doing what you say, when you say it, I’m never allowed to leave your side and my fate is in your powerful hands. You were generous enough to let me keep my bending but as far as the worlds concerned, I’m the avatar’s prisoner, with my own chakras mastered, I proved stable enough to be your prisoner instead of remaining institutionalized. My old self would still think of this as a fate worse then death but after what she’s done, I say that’s justice being served. I can also think of ‘other’ benefits to my little prisoner sentence with you.” (smirks devilishly and winks)

Aang: (faces briefly turns red and chuckles nervously) “Right, but with...that...aside, I believe you’ll no longer have to live in my shadow, make a name for yourself and prove to be a unique freelance hero. A role model in your own right.”

Azula: “Always the optimist but I care little what the world thinks of me. I’d rather have no identity then have an identity of a monster. To tell you the truth, not having to be worshipped and forced to serve all worshipers’ expectations is very relieving and relaxing.”

Not bad. I too imagined that Aang and Azula would be founders of Republic City although I imagine that everything about the city, even the name were all primarily Azula’s idea and places it within a fraction of the earth kingdom as her way of atoning for the fact she once wanted to see the entire earth kingdom and everyone in it be burned to the ground. Even though I don’t personally see her running for president and is still just living as a boundless freelance hero like Aang, I can however see her dishing out inspiring speeches and charisma if need be. It’d be an interesting thing if Katara ran for president as well as the world’s greatest healer. It’d give her a hell of a lot more justice to Katara’s character and she have more impact on the world. She has the charisma, the determination, adaptability and savviness. I also imagine that Zuko’s daughter, Izumi, is also the daughter of Katara. struggling-author has another take on the Azulaang family. They have four kids, two boys, two gals. The two boys are Tenzin ad Kuzon (of course) and the girls are Zuki and Ursa (part 2). One of Azula’s strict and stern rules of the azulaang household is that there must always be equality, Azula determines that all kids be given unconditional love and appreciation for each kid equally and they all equally get the better childhoods then their parents. Aang and Azula also have this little routine. They take turns on one parent going out to help the world and the other staying behind with the kids so they get an equal amount of time with there parents. By the time.

By the time Aang passes, (and after she mourns him) she and the white lotus search for the next avatar. Azula and her kids help Katara, Sokka, Zuko and the white lotus prevent the red lotus from capturing Korra. Sokka was killed in battle but they succeeded in protecting Korra. Azula became suspicious and knew that this particular red lotus attack was orchestrated by an authority figure. Unsure who to trust, Azula is the one who had Korra kept under white lotus protection in south pole. Do you remember that fire sage shaman women from the 2-part “the beginnings” episodes from season 2 of LOK who tends to the heard of sky bison on a remote island? That shaman is Azula herself. By the time Azula passes. She reunites with Aang in the spirit world and they spend eternity together in eternal balance, bliss, peace, joy, liberation and harmony.

I want to make a post of how I would see Aang and Azula starting a family. Both Aang and Azula help out in the creation of Republic City. Aang creates a new Air Temple for Republic City that everyone can access, not just Airbenders like the old ones did. Aang and Azula make it their home as well as a home for the Air Acolytes as well as anyone who needs a home. Instead happening after Season 1 of Korra, my version of Republic City will be led by a President as well as a council of representatives from each nation. In fact Azula ends up being elected as first President of Republic City which gives her more purpose in life. Even after her two terms are up, Azula plays an active role in ensuring Republic City thrives. Azula and Aang have twin boys a Firebender named Kuzon and an Airbender named Tenzin. They are given equal attention from both parents so they can appreciate both aspects of their life. Tenzin is mostly the same as he was in Legend of Korra (I love Tenzin and his family) and eventually Kuzon follows in his mother’s footsteps and becomes President of Republic City. Azula deeply mourns Aang when he passes on, but remains strong. Years later, Azula is introduced to a headstrong young woman from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. Azula forms a bond that is different but just as strong as the one she had with Aang and decides to become the Firebending teacher for the new Avatar. Azula is also a cranky and loving grandmother to her grandchildren too.
