A couple months ago, I found some early concept designs for the original Mobile Suit Gundam from when the project was tentatively called Freedom Fighter Gunboy. Those early designs were very … boxy, as was typical for toy-focused Japanese robots in the late 70s /early 80s. It’s hard to imagine any of those designs becoming iconic in the same way as the RX-78.
I thought I’d try a modern take on the one of the designs. The first version is with the original concept color scheme. Just for kicks, I tried a 2nd version with the traditional Gundam color scheme.
Sketched on paper and inked/colored on iPad Pro with Procreate.

Gundam comic book research
Gundam (Japanese: ガンダム Hepburn: Gandamu), also known as the Gundam Series (ガンダムシリーズ Gandamu Shirīzu), is a science fiction media franchise created by Sunrise that features giant robots(mecha) called mobile suits bearing the name Gundam. It began on April 7, 1979 as Mobile Suit Gundam, a TV series that defined the real robot or "mecha" anime genre by featuring giant robots in a militaristic setting. The popularity of the series and its merchandise spawned a franchise that includes television series, OVAs, films, manga, novels and video games.
In 2014 the Gundam franchise generated ¥80 billion per year,[1] ¥18.4 billion of which was retail sales of toys and hobby items.[1] Gunpla (plastic Gundam models) make up 90 percent of the Japanese character plastic-model market.[2] Academics in Japan have viewed the series as inspiration; in 2008, the virtual Gundam Academy was planned as the first academic institution based on an animated TV
Mobile Suit Gundam was developed by animator Yoshiyuki Tomino and a changing group of Sunrise creators with the collective pseudonym of Hajime Yatate. The series was originally entitled Freedom Fighter Gunboy (or Gunboy) for the robot's gun, with boys the primary target demographic. Early production had a number of references to freedom: the White Base was originally "Freedom's Fortress", the Core Fighter was the "Freedom Wing" and the Gunperry was the "Freedom Cruiser". The Yatate team combined the English word "gun" with the last syllable of the word "freedom" to form the portmanteau Gundom. Tomino changed it to Gundam, suggesting a unit wielding a gun powerful enough to hold back enemies like a hydroelectric dam holding back water.[4] In keeping with the concept, Gundam are depicted as prototypes or limited-production, with higher capabilities than mass-produced units.
Most Gundam are large, bipedal, humanoid vehicles controlled from a cockpit by a human pilot. The cockpit is located in the torso, while the head serves as a camera to transit images back to the cockpit.

Gundam is one of my favourite anime sic-fi’s. The reason I like gun dam is the big robots with big weapons I also like the space battles and I just love the way the robots look as well. Researching gundam has given me some ideas what I would like to draw in my comic so may be a manga comic Iwould like to make.
I would maybe put the colour black and white in the comic or I might add colour to my comic. I will stat to think about what robot I would like to sketch from my own design.

Gundam's Time Shinning
Seiko is launching a custom watch series inspired the 40 years of the Mobile Suit Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam is a series that originally aired in April 7, 1979. Gundam belongs to the mecha genre and basically, changed face for the genre in what it represents in the industry today. Sunrise was going to officially the name of the series as Freedom Fighters Gunboy until creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino, changed the name. He liked the name of freedom and Gunboy to the point where he combined the two to form Gundam. Seiko has made 3 colors of infamous Gundams portrayed in in the Gundam series. The limited edition is set in colors of green, silver-blue (white), and deep red Gundams. The green watch is based on the MSIA Gunner Zaku Warrior Green depicted in Gundam Seed Destiny. RX-78-2 Gundam, also known as white Gundam, is a classic Gundam portrayed in Mobile Suit Gundam and resembles the silver-blue Seiko watch. Zeta Gundam Ⅲ P2 TYPE RED is the last and final deep red watch of the 3-piece set. Seiko pays tribute in small ways to the Gundam Franchise like connecting Gundam Build Divers through 2 dive watches. I hope the Seiko Prospex Collection excites watch enthusiasts and anime fans alike. The watches are a good statement in knowing but in reality the price is way too expensive to buy any from the set. By the way, the prices of the green and red are only $3,600 while the silver-blue is $5,600. Find out more on Maxim website or Seiko Instagram post of the Prospex collector's special edition set.

#retroact #mobilesuitgundam #gundam

Some Freedom Fighter Gunboy concept art I did last year in reference to earlier concepts I drafted up. This is based on the earliest inception of 0079 Gundam's original plot/designs! I'll post older work here for it, but my main HC was that Char was female in this plot.
