VIAGEM PELO FANTÁSTICO > BORIS KOSSOY

 Viagem pelo fantástico (Ipsispub, 2021) do fotógrafo, professor e pesquisador paulistano Boris Kossoy é a reedição de um livro que pertence a estante essencial da fotografia latino-americana, publicado e distribuído pela Kosmos, livraria e editora paulistana em 1971. Nesta rara efeméride- 50 anos- contempla-se uma publicação que já estava esgotada há décadas com o acréscimo de um booklet, Revisitando Viagem pelo Fantástico, organizado pelo autor.

   Além de um texto do autor, o livreto traz ensaios do curador castelhano Horácio Fernández, da  carioca Helouise Costa, curadora do MAC-USP, da curadora paranaense Christiane Rodrigues, radicada na França, da mineira Ana Paula Vitorio, pesquisadora na University of the Free State, África do Sul; do jornalista paulista Ralph Willians de Camargo, coordenador dos cursos de jornalismo, fotografia e audiovisual do C.E. Fundação Assis Gurgacz, no Paraná; do paranaense Acir Dias da Silva, diretor do C.E.C.A. da Universidade Estadual no Oeste do Paraná; do escritor e curador pernambucano Diógenes Moura e do historiador paulista Ricardo Mendes, responsável pelo projeto documental Fotoplus, além de algumas imagens inéditas mais recentes que contextualizam a edição original.

    Organizador do excelente Fotolivros Latino-americanos (Cosac & Naify, 2011), Fernández escreve que Viagem pelo Fantástico "é um fotolivro tão aberto quanto uma jam session", ainda que seus capítulos tenham um título em especial, e estejam conectados como em um filme ou em um conto fotográfico, diz ele. Neste percurso, eles "exploram o drama existencial, os cenários urbanos, além de enveredar pelo político, a partir de imagens simbólicas." Como o título já adianta, é uma viagem pelo mundo criado pelo autor, que podemos chamar de "realismo fantástico" e também de "realismo mágico".     Viagem pelo Fantástico é um dos 15 livros publicado por Kossoy no Brasil e um dos poucos com sua fotografia autoral, como Boris Kossoy Fotógrafo (Cosac & Naify, 2010) e 59 anos de fotografia. Imago, sobre o aparente e o oculto (Fundação Brasilea, Suíça, 2015) em que o autor se dedica a própria produção fotográfica, diferentemente de livros de pesquisa e pensamento imagético, como em Hercules Florence: a descoberta isolada da fotografia no Brasil (Edusp, 2016) onde ele comprova os experimentos precursores do francês Florence (1804-1879) que o levaram a descoberta independente da fotografia no interior do Brasil em 1883 ou o Dicionário Histórico Fotográfico Brasileiro (IMS-2002) talvez a maior pesquisa do gênero já feita no país, entre outros, além daqueles publicados no exterior que somam dez títulos.

   Diz o autor que neste livro, "explora-se a pretensa vinculação que a fotografia tem com o real, porém a partir do imaginário fantástico, numa atmosfera de mistério que já caracterizava nossos desenhos dos anos sessenta. Trata-se de um livro de ‘contos’, sem palavras, à exceção dos títulos. Um conto por meio de imagens formando breves sequências de encadeamentos reflexivos: lembranças, sensações, sonhos, porém nunca apresentados segundo uma linearidade que caracteriza o ensaio fotográfico ou a foto-documentação."

   Kossoy  me conta que 80% das imagens desta reedição vieram dos negativos em seu arquivo, o que, segundo ele, demandou três meses de buscas para encontrá-los. Os 20% restantes foram mais difíceis porque as imagens existiam apenas em impressões vintage de gelatina de prata que foram reproduzidas e ou recuperadas e tratadas pela equipe técnica da Ipsis, liderada pelo expert Eduardo Monezi, responsável pela equalização das fotografias para impressão.

     Se as publicações de "fotolivros" ou "livros de artista", até o presente não se consolidaram plenamente para o grande público em suas peculiaridades gráficas e conceituais, podemos imaginar o que acontecia no início dos anos 1970, que recebe esta publicação, no mínimo pioneira no então ainda fraco mercado editorial para livros que cultivavam uma aproximação com a arte estabelecida, ainda mais com relação à fotografia que se colocava como uma produção ambígua e indefinida em um Brasil cujos enormes valores de importação e o alto custo da impressão local de livros atrasaram uma necessária expansão cultural.

    Viagem pelo Fantástico foi desenhado por Kossoy, que antes de iniciar-se na arte fotográfica, já dominava a do desenho como aluno do artista asturiano Fernando Odriozola (1921-1986). Ele me conta, com muito humor, que o livro surgiu de uma espécie de "caleidoscópio" que tem na cabeça: " uma mistura de bilhões de imagens que temos na cabeça desde que nascemos." Ou oriundas de experiências peculiares, como a famosa imagem do maestro regendo em um cemitério, que lhe surgiu literalmente a partir de um sonho.

   Esta fotografia é significativa com um range não apenas gráfico e surrealista, mas também político, produzida em meio a ditadura militar que atingia pesadamente a cultura brasileira, para qual a metáfora se amolda com perfeição, assim como a fotografia dos manequins despedaçados (a lembrarem o italiano Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), como observa Fernández) são também alegorias da tragédia que o país enfrentava, que ganharam um caráter atemporal, encontrando ressonância na infeliz política contemporânea.

   Helouise Costa pontua algumas estratégias do autor conectadas às fontes literárias como o colombiano Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014) e o argentino Julio Cortázar (1914-1984), expoentes do Realismo Mágico. Segundo a curadora, "a opção pela fotografia direta e o recurso a encenação." Excetuando a série ``A mulher na cidade, uma fotomontagem, "as demais fotos são registros diretos de cenas urbanas ou ambientes fechados, onde são inseridos elementos desestabilizadores da lógica da vida cotidiana. O real não se apresenta como um dado a priori, mas como uma questão a ser problematizada."

   Mas, antes de entramos no cenário fantástico criado engenhosamente por Kossoy, é interessante pensarmos que o chamado Realismo rejeitou a idealização imaginativa em favor de uma observação atenta das aparências, abrangendo inúmeras correntes que variam conforme a cultura de cada lugar, encontrado desde as esculturas helenísticas da antiga cultura grega ou nas obras de artistas do século XVII, como o milanês Caravaggio (1571-1610) e os chamados pintores de gênero.

     Já a fusão do presente com o passado, a invenção de objetos estranhos, a justaposição de coisas díspares, como vemos em Viagem ao Fantástico, são apenas algumas das maneiras pelas quais os artistas dedicados ao Realismo fantástico e mágico evocam o mistério e a estranheza da realidade cotidiana. O historiador e crítico de arte alemão Franz Roh (1890-1965) é tido como o primeiro usar o termo Realismo mágico em 1925, em seu livro Pós-expressionismo Realismo mágico: Problemas relacionados com a pintura europeia mais recente (Klinkhardt & Biermann, 1925), para fazer a distinção do realismo da Alemanha do Pós-guerra e do movimento da Nova Objetividade surgido antagonicamente ao Expressionismo e se aproximando do chamado Surrealismo.

   O movimento do Realismo Fantástico, considerado como uma versão vienense do surrealismo, um movimento- mais conhecido na Áustria- teve seu início na década de 1950, com a associação de pintores que se dedicavam a uma forma surrealista de representação e a um imaginário misterioso e frequentemente enigmático. Entre os fundadores da Escola de Realismo Fantástico de Viena estavam  Ernst Fuchs (1930-2015) e Rudolf Hausner (1915-1965).

    Viagem ao Fantástico, segundo Boris Kossoy,  "tem uma  diagramação que envolve as imagens e estabelece um espaço que vai além das possibilidades burocráticas recorrentes e repetitivas que geralmente constatamos nos livros de fotografia. Remete ao cinema e, por vezes, aos comics na sua forma, embora acabe se moldando fortemente à mensagem comunicada pelas imagens na sua individualidade e nos conjuntos que formam as sequências." É nesse "clima que se desenvolvem os 10 conjuntos, buscando conexões com os fatos cotidianos através de sua projeção fragmentária mágica, diz o autor, que envolve a política, a questão existencial e a estética, "sendo a fotografia o instrumento de materialização das imagens mentais e do imaginado: é o elo de ligação com o real em sua concretude. A imagem técnica o convalida."

  Para a pesquisadora Ana Paula Vitorio, a proximidade com o filme Noir é predominante nas escolhas estéticas feitas por Boris Kossoy: a exploração do contraste intenso, a dramaticidade das sombras, o ponto de vista psicológico e o subjetivo, e a prioridade dada aos ambientes externos contemporâneos, trazem similaridades entre o conteúdo do livro e este tipo de cinema de forte produção nos anos 1940 e 1950, afirma ela. O próprio autor sinaliza diretores como o inglês Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980), o italiano Michelangelo Antonioni (1912-2007), o americano Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) e o sueco Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) cujo filme O sétimo selo, de 1957, tem um lugar especial em sua memória.     É curioso pensar que a grande maioria das imagens ou sequências não surgiram diretamente dessa "biblioteca" do autor mas sim recriações que chegaram à posteriori, através das analogias que compunham o imenso vocabulário que abastecia o seu "caleidoscópio". Kossoy explica: "Imaginar o mundo com essas cenas sempre fez parte do meu imaginário e eu as transferia para as fotografias." Nos anos 1970, o uso da fotografia nesta direção eram poucos. Simultaneamente, a este trabalho vieram as experiências próximas  no Brasil dos anos 1960 com a dupla Roberto Piva (1937-2010 ) e Wesley Duke Lee (1931-2010) com Paranoia ( Massao Ohno, 1963), reeditado pelo Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) em 2009 e aproximações também com a obra do fotógrafo americano Duane Michals.     Como costuma acontecer a tantas inovações, diz Horácio Fernández,  no começo Viagem pelo Fantástico teve pouca repercussão. Muito tempo depois, era uma das maiores e melhores surpresas de fotolivros latino-americano. " uma ave rara em seu contexto e uma peça maior no conjunto da história dos fotolivros, uma obra ainda tão viva e aberta como quando começou sua longa trajetória." Para Kossoy a viagem pelo fantástico ainda não terminou, continua na produção de suas novas imagens, algumas delas publicadas no booklet que acompanha a edição.

     O jornalista e curador italiano Pietro Maria Bardi (1900-1999) escreve em seu prefácio um texto que passados 50 anos, ainda continua contemporâneo e instigante: "... um estado de espírito particular em busca de inquietações, de porções de fantástico, de realidades mágicas, a não confundir com aquelas fugas no abstrato, um tempo tão em moda. Tons de realidade, de materialismo que a natureza e o homem combinam para o poeta colher à sua vontade e talento. Viagem fantástica de personagens humanos e fabricados à procura da paz que não encontram, submetidos a circunstâncias incongruentes e excepcionais. Casos do externo proibido a todos pela concordância com determinada lei do bom costume, casos dos esconderijos em que o homem maltrata a rotina praxe de todos e dele mesmo, quando opera no conjunto para afirmar na solidão, verdadeiramente, liberdades para ele não esquisitas: íntimas, até passagens momentâneas ou permanentes de esquizofrenia..."

  É verdade que a fotografia sempre sofreu o peso de uma correspondência indomável com a realidade, argumenta o pensador português Miguel Faleiro, um especialista na cultura digital. Seja nos poderes delineadores da pose - uma correspondência marcante com a aparente imobilidade das coisas ou com aquilo que forçamos a “pose”, a prótese do retrato, por exemplo - seja no instantâneo, como uma corrida óptico-mecânica-química - hoje em dia principalmente óptico-eletrônica - na busca do movimento, seja no meio. " Em uma era de síntese e hibridização aparentemente infinita da fotografia, parece que essa correspondência ainda molda o meio ao ponto do verdadeiro ou do falso.  Mas o "real" fotográfico não é um segmento científico, da mesma forma que o "irreal" não é vazio. Ambos constituem a imagem e o espectro do pathos fotográfico.

    Desta maneira, a obra de Kossoy, mais que consolidada, permanece mais iluminada do que nunca. O arlequim colocado na margem de uma estrada, como uma "aparição"; a mulher sentada nua envolta em seus pensamentos em uma cama de hospital católico; o regente que ergue a sua batuta para túmulos silenciosos em um cemitério ou a noiva solitária em uma estação do trem que nos indica nunca chegar, engendram significados que embora amparados em uma possível realidade, problematizam suas encenações para além da usual leitura de uma fotografia ou outra individualmente a nos sugerir a importância do jogo amparado pelo gestaltismo, onde é preciso conhecer o todo para entender as partes propostas pelo autor. Portanto, a cada construção proposta por ele, é necessário a dedicação do leitor para ser um passageiro desta viagem.

   Ainda segundo Kossoy: "...os cenários eram ambientados, produzidos e as personagens representavam tal como no palco de um teatro, ou numa encenação cinematográfica. Um enredo que vai além do visível, do comprovado – expectativa secular da fotografia. Os dez contos que compõem a obra são assim construídos. E, em “leituras” posteriores os receptores começavam a perceber conexões internas entre as histórias. Essa era a ideia. " É necessário lembrar mais uma vez as palavas de Bardi, que suas criações são simbólicas, iam na contramão do tradicional emprego convencional da fotografia enquanto instrumento de registro destinado a aplicações imediatas, ilustrativas ao mesmo tempo em que punham em cheque a “fotografia artística” dos fotoclubes.

   "É óbvio que, desde o início, buscamos na fotografia abordagens mais complexas enquanto expressão cultural, estética e ideológica, uma marca que procuramos manter ao longo de nossa trajetória. Além do natural impacto que as imagens do fantástico causaram à época, houve também nessa ‘viagem’ um exercício de linguagem com a expressão fotográfica. Tratava-se, afinal, de uma mudança de código. Um jogo ambíguo com a própria ideia de representação fotográfica tal como foi sempre compreendida no interior de um universo de aplicações utilitárias." explica Kossoy.

   Em entrevista para o jornalista paulista Érico Elias, então curador do Festival Paraty em Foco de 2019, Boris Kossoy responde sobre a dicotomia documento-ficção: "O multissecular sistema de representação visual no qual a pintura e, muito mais tarde a fotografia se apoia, nunca foi questionado. A câmera obscura veiculou o sistema e a fotografia, invenção pela qual os objetos do mundo visível podiam “se representar a si próprios”, auxiliou a consolidar o mito graças à sua matemática transposição de dimensões entre o objeto e a imagem. No entanto, é o próprio sistema que abriga— o que tenho chamado de - "a ficção original, cujo significado remete à ilusão de realidade que a fotografia transmite e que se conforma pelo processo de criação/construção da representação, matriz do documento.

   O autor argumenta que o processo é regido pelo "fotógrafo que tem o ponto final no registro técnico, porém expressivo, o qual ainda está sujeito a tratamentos e outras formas invasivas de ação pós-documental, que virão interferir na sua expressão - e mensagem." O documento fotográfico é, assim, permeável a outras manipulações a partir das legendas, títulos e textos que o cercam, cujos conteúdos variam de acordo com as finalidades, usos e aplicações a que se destina a imagem."

   As múltiplas identidades nas fotografias de Kossoy, são típicas dos atos que destinamos a atenção às aparências. Um envolvimento do autor ao longo da série com representação, identidade e dramatização. Todos nós estamos mudando constantemente nossa maneira de ser, inúmeras personas, quanto diferentes momentos temporais. Viagem pelo Fantástico nos fornece leituras subjetivas, parábolas e metáforas que estabelecem pioneiramente o ideal do fantástico como a liberdade de autor na construção de suas próprias imagens.

justiça por matheus oliveira - he was 23 years old, and had just become a father. police said they were defending themselves, but witnesses claim they open fired directly at him. 

justiça por joão pedro - joão was 14 and police shot his house 72 times. they also took his body and his family had to wait 17 hours before they could see it. police claim there was an open fire going, the witnesses said there wasn’t. here’s a post about it

justiça por miguel - miguel was 5 and died in a fall on June 2nd. he was under Sarí Côrte Real’s care, his mom’s boss, because “she didn’t have the money to let her employee stay at home”, so miguel’s mom had to work and bring him with her. but sarí neglected taking care of him, and while his mom went out to walk her boss’ dog, miguel went up to the 9th floor, all alone, and fell. she paid bail fund (around 4k dollars) and left prison not even a few days after.

agatha’s case. she was killed in a “confrontation”, police says. she was 8. they even went as far as going to the hospital where agatha was taken to get rid of evidence

i’m on mobile so i can’t link too many articles/news (se algum br quiser me mandar links eu adiciono aqui depois!), but in short term: there’s a lot going on in brazil right now, and we’re only halfway thru bolsonaro’s presidency. he already put the military (historically sexist, homophobic and racist) in almost every official place he can, and we’re receiving a lot of bad news lately (the collapse of our public health care system in the middle of covid19 pandemic, suspension of enem -which allows poor and most poc ppl into public, free universitie- “because we don’t have funds”, sky high deforastation levels that affect the whole world), and many others. i know that every country is going thru their own problems right now and there’s no ‘direct action’ to be done, but this is what i mean when i say pay attention to brazil.
