This may be a bit random but I was wondering if you could talk about your experiences at uni, I’m currently considering the same one and I’d love to hear a student’s perspective xxx
i loved it, had an amazing three years! the city is beautiful and my course (english lit) was great. tbh i don’t think i should say much more because uni is really what you make of it. there are people at every uni who hate it, and people at every uni who love it. as long as you go there with an open mind, seek out good people, work hard at your course and use the resources you have (aka chats with your lecturers!!!), try new experiences, explore the city and make the best of life that you can, you’ll have a great time wherever you go.Â
york specific tips: best colleges are probs derwent, vanbrugh and halifax, though i was in alcuin and still had a great first year. the best club night is salvos friday tho i heard rumours it might be closing so pray for that. avoid vudu lounge, flares and popworld, especially on saturday nights when the locals are prowling. similarly, wednesday nights in salvos are fun but be careful of the boys in sports teams, they make competitions out of messing with the girls that are out. best chips after a night out are from deniz on parliament street. best student houses in second year are along heslington road or in fulford, but choose who you’re going to live with carefully. the city is full of amazing hidden gems like independent cafes, bars, bookshops and museums, so make sure you explore everywhere you can. theres an amazing zero waste shop called the bishy weigh thats a bit hidden so look out for that. the city has a fantastic independent music scene, one of the best open mics is sunday nights at The Hop but there are so many good ones, make sure you go to a few of those!! you can book study rooms in the library online and its a great way to guarantee yourself a seat, and you can choose one near to your course’s books. join baking society, only £4 membership and you get to make free cakes every week! york has the most societies of any uni so join all the ones you can.Â
final note: choosing a uni can feel like the biggest decision of your life, but wherever you go, you WILL find the first month or so hard. this doesn’t mean you chose wrong. it’s normal to struggle with change. ignore the pressure on fresher’s week and just try to be the best person you can be. trust that it will all work out. i wouldn’t change anything about my experience at york for the world. good luck!
