Everyone who lived on Baker Street had come out from the fog to eat Nanni’s dinner. This made perfect sense; Nanni was one of the few people in the park who knew how to cook meals using ingredients and an oven.
When the park was still open, Revati's home was a coffee shop called the “Mad Hatter Teaparty.” The walls were painted in eye-watering clashing shades of neon pink and green. The light fixtures hanging from the ceiling were all giant velvet top hats. The booths were giant flower teacups with tiny chairs and tables inside.
"Was there some sort of drug in the pineapple?" Revati heard Brigadeiro ask. Revati just ignored him and instead walked past each of the booths, collecting tributes; nobody ate Nanni’s for free.
The Paprikas sat in the blue and gold teacup, their neon orange hair clashing with the paint. The Paprikas were two brothers and their sister who had found themselves trapped in the park as children. Their parents had been vaporized by a towel-warming rack. Now they were in their mid-twenties and worked for Revati as hired muscle for free dinners.
"Who's the new guy? He's actually clean and good-looking," the youngest brother Brie asked Revati. "His name is Brigadeiro Bun; he's an off-world tourist who stupidly went to the wasteland," Revati said. "I was trying to find crystal roses," Brigadeiro smiled helpfully.
"Bridgadeiro huh? So your parents were Goup worshippers then?" The sister, Juniper, asked curiously. Revati vaguely knew that Goupism was a popular religion on other colonies. Over a thousand years ago, there was once a woman who apparently traveled the earth gathering the best health practices needed to be “happy.” "A white woman, and she stole most of her ideas from our eastern religions," Amma, who was a staunch atheist, had snapped with annoyance when Revati asked her to explain the Paprika siblings' religion. Still, despite her thievery, at some point, she had become a god. They firmly believed in things such as “psychic vampires” and “color-balancing therapy.” They also all had peculiar food-related names, mainly because the goddess had named her daughter Apple.
"Yes, they were. They insisted on coming here for a Wellness Day holiday," the eldest brother, Croquette, growled. "I miss mama's Wellness Day Avocado and chocolate cookies," Juniper sighed sadly. "It's not the same, but here I have a couple of factory-made ones in my pocket," Brigadeiro said, crawling into the booth. The Paprika siblings gasped with astonishment as he pulled a packet of cookies wrapped in gold paper out of his jumpsuit's gigantic pocket. "They got a bit crushed when I was kidnapped, but they're still good," he said, opening the package and placing it on the table. The Paprika siblings stared at the cookies, their mouths slack with shock. Croquette slowly shook his head, completely snatched the package, and began to serve the crushed crumbs amongst his siblings. "You need to keep this one forever," Juniper said firmly, and Revati just shook her head, moving onto the next table.
The next table consisted of the elderly Gupta couple. "You adopted another kid? If you want more water for him, we want more dried apples," Mrs. Gupta said, a small scowl on her wizened face. It was Mr. Gupta who had figured out how to gather and purify water from the atmosphere. It was Mrs. Gupta who managed and recorded all the water they collected, rolling it out like a tyrannical dictator. "Fine, one extra package of dried apples per week," Revati said before swishing grandly onwards.
Amma was sitting in the pink cup, her new partner Dusk Brisbane. Dusk Brisbane was a teacher from Titan, who, along with their students on a field trip, found themselves stuck in the park. Like all people from Titan, Dusk had inherited the ability to rapidly change biological genders. Titan had also inherited a name that meant a time of day and a gender. Dusk’s remaining students were sitting with Dityaa on a large cat-shaped sofa. When the invasion began, there were twenty-three of them. Now there were only five nineteen-year-olds left. Dityaa was holding court over all of them, sitting on a couch shaped like a giant grinning beast. "Your sister said you had an interesting night," Amma remarked as Revati sat down next to her. Nanni had laid out a plate of aloo mushroom curry. Revati picked up a piece of hardtack and dipped it into the sauce, refusing to talk. "So you're not even going to bother telling your side of the story?" Amma asked as Revati swallowed. Nanni always moaned that her cooking was so much better before the war. Years ago, Nanni worked in the city as a professional meal prepper for wealthy families that wanted to eat real organic food.
Nanni was proud of her ability to create one hundred percent sand-free meals using the most exotic ingredients. Nanni would bemoan to everyone that her meals were now a mess, that her spices were too basic, and that she never had enough salt. Revati, however, who had never tried anything else, thought her food was delicious. "I'm hungry! Besides, what's the point in telling my side? I'm sure Dityaa's story was more enthralling," Revati replied. "Every story needs both sides and the truth," Dusk remarked. As they spoke, their features shifted from a feminine middle-aged woman's face to a man's face with a beard. "You're not my creative writing teacher, and you're not my parent," Revati pointed out.
Revati knew deep down she didn’t dislike Dusk; Dusk was a perfectly decent person. Not to mention Amma had been so lonely until Dusk offered to help her teach the feral children a year ago. Still, it was a lot to get used to.
“True, but your mother did ask you a question, and I think she deserves an answer," Dusk replied in that same mild diplomatic voice. Revati deliberately ate another mouthful of curry before wiping her mouth with the sleeve of her dress. "Dityaa got attacked by some lady at the ball; the chutiya had A.I. eye implants! They must have switched on somehow," Revati explained. "Mind your mouth, Revati! There will be no swearing at the dinner table," Amma scolded her. "Her implants switched on? That's so odd; one of my students had AI tastebuds, but they stopped working the second we walked into the park," Dusk remarked, their face shifting back into a woman's as they glanced at one of their students. The student in question, Basil Paris, was sitting next to Dityaa, licking their hand. Dusk was right; in order to create true "historical authenticity," the park was surrounded by massive mirrors. The volcanic Martian glass blocked the "AI" life stream. "And what did you do?" Amma asked in a quiet, nervous voice. "I threw a glass of vodka at her face, and her eyes fried up," Revati replied.
"Can you take the children's sign language lesson tomorrow morning? I need to check the mirrors around the walls," Amma said to Dusk.
"Of course," Dusk replied, and Revati rolled her eyes.
"You don't need to do anything, Amma! I'm the elected leader of Baker Street! This is my job," Revati said firmly.
"You're only seventeen!" Amma protested.
"Almost everyone voted for me! Well, apart from Mrs. Gupta, who voted for herself," Revati said, and mother sighed.
"Fine! But you're not going to leave well after the sun rises, and you're not taking Cora and Laila! You can take Vivienne and Jay Jr.," Mother replied firmly.
Nine minutes past midnight.
Revati's eyes snapped open in the blue-glowing darkness. Slowly, she sat up, taking in the familiar shapes of the kitchen's walk-in freezer. Dityaa was sleeping next to her on the souvenir pillows Amma had sewn together into a makeshift bed. In the corner, the feral children slept together in a nest made of old soft toys. Nanni was snoring on one of the plastic shelves that had long ago stored ice cream. Amma insisted on them all sleeping behind the massive metal doors. To anyone who lived near any other planet, it would have been freezing, but Martians had evolved to withstand the cold.
Revati stood up and glanced down at Dityaa. Dityaa had worn her new dress to bed, ignoring the stains. The blood on her dress looked shiny black, her face shadowy blue. She looked just like Princess Savitri in the family book of fairy tales. Revati, on the other hand, had changed into her pajamas, which consisted of a long-sleeved men's shirt three sizes too big. The red fabric hung to her knees, and the words "Olde Landon Halloweenfest 3544" had been printed across the front. Revati picked up her blanket, draping it around her shoulders. Sleep wasn't going to return any time soon. Revati reached underneath her part of the mattress until she found the stories.
Outside the metal doors, Revati could hear distant voices, and carefully she slid the door open. Amma and Dusk were sitting together on the cat-shaped couch, murmuring to each other over tea.
"I don't see how they could know..." Amma began, and then she trailed off, spotting Revati.
"Insomnia again?" She asked gently, and Revati nodded, walking past the two of them.
"If you're going up to the greenhouse, be quiet; I made a bed for the boy up there," Mother replied.
"Really, Amma? You couldn't give him a bed?" Revati asked, opening the front door.
"He would freeze in the fridge, and he said he liked plants," Mother replied.
Outside, the fog was still shifting, and Revati moved ten spaces to the right.
"Evening, boss," Juniper's voice called, and she suddenly appeared holding a jar filled with glowing mushrooms.
"Any problems?" Revati asked.
"Nope, it's been a pretty quiet night!" Juniper said.
"Good, make sure your brother takes over your shift! We don't want you fainting from sleep deprivation again," Revati replied.

Exploring Queensland’s Spectacular Western Scenic Rim
Exploring Queensland’s Spectacular Western Scenic Rim

Jo Hoban explores the Western Scenic Rim on a two-day hike. Photo – courtesy of Spicers Retreats.
Growing up in Brisbane, my parents would often take our family for short getaways to the western Scenic Rim region known for its picturesque mountain ranges. We’d visit country spots like Boonah, Lake Moogerah and Mt Barney. I have lovely memories of those times (aside from the sticky vinyl upholstery in Dad’s old 1970s Ford Falcon).
These days I live near Brisbane’s Mt Coot-tha Forest where I love walking the trails. When the opportunity arose to “spread my hiking wings” and do the Spicers two-day Scenic Rim Trail earlier this year, I jumped! The Scenic Rim Trail is located on the Western edge of the region and showcases a small part of The Great Dividing Range. Heading out that way again reminded me there are many wonderful, lesser-known places on Brisbane’s doorstep. And a range of exciting new businesses are breathing fresh life into the region.
Photographer Mindi Cooke and I took a little road trip to visit a few. Here’s the lowdown!

Activity: Spicers Two-Day Scenic Rim Trail
The two-day Scenic Rim Trail is an enriching active travel experience run by Spicers Retreats, a company committed to protecting the environment, and providing sustainable ecotourism experiences for future generations. Experienced guides lead small groups through a region comprised of 30,000 hectares of World Heritage Listed National Park, Gondwana Rainforest, and Spicers Peak Station – a privately owned 2000-hectare nature reserve.
The trail showcases some of South-East Queensland’s spectacular high country and it is Queensland’s only addition to the Great Walks of Australia collection. All gear, food, drinks, and accommodation are provided, so logistically the experience is hassle-free. Some sections are steep and challenging so you need a good level of fitness. Hiking poles are provided to help increase stability, and they’re very helpful – I’m a convert! Our guide, Chris, was an affable and knowledgeable young man. He kept a caring eye on everyone, assisting as needed and providing an interesting commentary when relevant.
DAY 1 is spent making our way through the diverse flora and fauna of Mount Mitchell and eventually to its peak, where we’re rewarded with epic views out to Moreton Bay. We’re lucky enough to spot a juvenile koala in the wild, along with a red-necked wallaby, and a snake. In the afternoon we descend Mount Mitchell and traverse into Spicers’ nature reserve before heading up into Spicers canopy for the night.
DAY 2 sees us moseying along Oakey Creek bed before beginning a long, gradual climb up Cedar Mountain. We follow the mountain’s ridge and eventually scramble up over some rocks into the Gondwana heritage-listed rainforest. This ancient ecosystem is truly awe-inspiring ensconced in a light mist, with entangled vines, lush ground cover and a diverse canopy – a rare, and incredibly beautiful natural environment. The walk ends at Spicers Peak Lodge, where we’re greeted like long lost kings and queens and provided with welcome refreshments. Nature lovers and foodies will thoroughly enjoy this experience!

Stay: Spicers Canopy
Spicers Canopy is set on a lower plateau of the Spicers Peak Station property. It offers glamping at its best, and after a solid day of hiking it is so nice to be rewarded with a little relaxed luxury (not to mention a glass of wine!). Each African-safari style tent features king or twin beds with fine linen, bedside tables and a covered deck with a comfortable armchair perfect for taking in the views to Mount Mitchell. A communal main lodge has a generous lounge area and an open fireplace, a dining area, and sliding doors that open onto a wide verandah. There’s also an outdoor hot tub and cute firepit perfect for gathering for a pre-dinner drink or a stargaze.
A highlight of Canopy is the gourmet meals prepared on-site by a Spicers chef. They feature local produce, some of which is grown in the kitchen garden at the nearby Spicers Hidden Vale country retreat.
The staff at Canopy are friendly, attentive and entertaining, which makes the overall experience very enjoyable.

Shop + Experience:
Sarah Bottle of Elegance & Grace, and Jade Cook of Jade Beauty Skinstitute share an old shop space in the tiny, charming town of Kalbar – located between Spicers Peak Station and Brisbane.
Sarah stocks a range of gifts and homewares featuring locally made leatherwork, sculptures, and ceramics, while Jade has a beauty therapy treatment room and nails station within the space. She stocks Dermalogica and other select beauty products, and a small section of gifts and homewares.
On the day we visit, Jade is tending to a sick child, but Sarah warmly welcomes us and shows us around. A teacher by trade, Sarah moved to Kalbar a year ago with her partner and young children. The shop is now celebrating its first birthday, business is going well, and Sarah and Jade are excited for the future of their unique, combined offering!

Eat + Drink: Scenic Rim Brewery
What an unexpected gem in the tiny town of Mt Alford this is! Just a 20-minute drive from Kalbar, the Scenic Rim Brewery is well worth a visit. Housed in the old Mt Alford General Store (est. 1884) Mike and Wendy Webster purchased the run-down property in 2014, convincing three levels of government that it was a good idea to renovate, extend and install a brewery. They opened in December of 2016 and it’s been onward and upward from there!
Mike was previously a builder with a keen interest in home brewing – he created his first brew in his kitchen over thirty years ago. The couple’s Dutch and German heritage means their menu is dotted with delicacies such as Bitterballen and Bratwurst, amid other healthy (and not-so) treats.
But of course, the highlight here is the beer! And a paddle tasting sampler did not disappoint. My fave was their newest brew, Beauty and Blue Spiced Pumpkin Ale – so damn smooth, and naturally brewed with local Beaudesert Blue pumpkins and water harvested from the mountains and valleys of the Scenic Rim.

The cellar door was designed by architect, Con Zahos. It responds exceptionally well to David’s brief: a barn style, though sharp, modern & edgy, reflecting masculine and feminine elements, that blends well with the environment and topography. Wine + Dine: The Overflow Estate 1895
15 minutes from the country town of Boonah, and 30 mins from Mt Alford and Kalbar, you’ll find this gem of a winery en route to Beaudesert. Owner David Morgan is a charming character who provides a wonderful introduction to the property, as we sit on the deck of his architecturally-designed cellar door.
David respectfully acknowledges that Indigenous people were on this land for generations. Though from the 1860s, the land became a farming plot. In 1895 Edgar Joyce, an Irishman, and his wife Nina Perse, bought the land and called it The Overflow. Fast forward 111 years and David Morgan and his wife purchased the land in 2006 from the Joyce Dynasty; they were inspired to create their own vineyard after visiting a friend’s Spanish Bodega. David extended the property’s name to The Overflow 1895 to pay homage to the previous owners.
The Vineyard’s rootstock was planted in 2012 and the Morgans have since nurtured the four unusual varieties that underpin their offerings; they are all grapes with Mediterranean origins well suited to the native terroir. Everything is done by hand at this vineyard, and the Morgans get so much pleasure from being able to share the fruits of their small team’s labour with visitors!
The cellar door offers a full menu and wine tastings on Friday, Saturday + Sunday (and a reduced menu on Wednesday and Thursday) – with live music every Sunday. The day we visit, I enjoyed a delicious local cheese and antipasto platter, some Towri sheep cheese yoghurt & tomato bruschetta, nicely complemented with a glass of their Storm Cru Sparkling wine. All divine! I can’t wait to return on a Sunday afternoon.

New Post has been published on https://travelonlinetips.com/13-hands-on-cooking-classes-to-fire-up-your-inner-masterchef-2/
13 hands-on cooking classes to fire up your inner masterchef
Does the thought of hosting a dinner party make you wilt faster than a basil leaf in a Brisbane kitchen? Have you lost your mojo to come up with clever new weekday meals?
Whether you’re a wizard when it comes to Insta-worthy creations or a toasted sandwich kinda chef, your kitchen will rule after signing up to one of these hands-on cooking classes, all within a few hours of Brisbane.
1. Spirit House, Yandina, Sunshine Coast
Expect a little spice when you book a class at Spirit House. Located just off the Bruce Highway, two hours north of Brisbane and about 20 minutes inland from Noosa, total immersion in nature also awaits. Oozing oriental charm, the alfresco restaurant is nestled amongst towering bamboo trees and a picturesque lotus pond.
If you love the flavours of Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, but the daunting recipes make you run for your Uber Eats app, this cooking school is for you. They aim to serve up a basic knowledge of Asian ingredients and methods, with classes including ‘Gluten Free Asian’, ‘Asian Shared Table’ and ‘One Bowl Wonders’.
At the end of your four-hour session, you can wash the fruits of your hard work down with free wine and beer!
2. Life’s a Feast Cooking School, Noosaville
For a homely vibe, this boutique cooking school is housed in a… well, a private house, a few minutes’ drive from Noosa’s Main Beach.
The freshly-baked muffins on arrival give you a taste of owner and teacher Gail Rast’s cooking style – that is, effortless, wholesome and crowd-pleasing. Her class options take you on a global tasting experience, from authentic American barbecue cuisine to flavoursome Moroccan feasts and advanced pasta-making.
But Gail’s teachings involve more than just a pinch of this and a sprinkle of that; at Life’s A Feast you’ll also score piping hot tips on menu planning, food and wine pairing, and food presentation. We guarantee your knife-cutting skills will go up a notch or four under her careful tuition.
3. James St Cooking School, New Farm, Brisbane
This Brisbane institution was serving up culinary lessons long before James Street emerged as a cool dining (slash everything) hub.
With super fresh ingredients at your disposal, the chefs at James St Cooking School encourage you to get messy. Forget just tasting; these guys are big on touching and smelling the food to really get absorbed in the cooking process.
Although they cover a bunch of different cuisines, their most popular class is ‘Fast and Furious Seafood’ – think pan-fried fish in bush spice or prawn cutlets poached in coconut milk. Delish!
4. Wild Lime Cooking School, Scenic Rim
Who cares about food when the scenery is this tasty? Ninety minutes’ drive south west of Brisbane is The Lost World Valley, an inspiration for your taste buds encircled by the dramatic ranges of Lamington National Park.
For a true gourmet getaway with friends, attend one of the monthly Wild Lime Cooking School classes, then spend the night at the delightful homestead next door and wake up to the bleating sounds of roving sheep.
The focus here is on using local produce to create everyday dishes that are elevated to perfection. Learn how to make leek-wrapped scallops, mint couscous with native greens or lamb shoulder with fig paste, and sit back on the huge balcony to drink in the country scenery while you devour it.
If you’re travelling with kids, the local homestay operators work in unison, so you can drop them off at nearby Cedar Glen Farmstay for horse riding and milking cows while you create grown-up flavours.
5. Vanilla Zulu, Teneriffe, Brisbane
A modern set-up, this Teneriffe school for culinary adventures is run by Zimbabwe-born Melanie Townsend, who has travelled the world to bring foodie tricks to Brisbane.
Perfect for the reluctant cooks and shy bench-sitters, Vanilla Zulu is all about giving you a hefty dose of confidence, while showing that you can pull together gourmet meals without losing too much precious Netflix time over a hot stove.
Classes run two to four days a week, and the list is pretty extensive with a focus on rustic Italian or vegan one day and meat lover’s or pastries the next. Or, for the ambitious, Melanie also runs a six-week chef skills course.
6. The Golden Pig, Newstead, Brisbane
Take a funky warehouse in inner-city Newstead, add a plethora of premium chefs, and you’ve got Brisbane’s edgiest cooking school.
The groups at The Golden Pig are big, but so too are the flavours. Whip up a classic beef pho from scratch in the new ‘Vietnamese Soups & Noodles’ class, trim beef like a real chef in ‘Kitchen Essentials’, or learn to preserve and cure pork in the ‘Pork Charcuterie Class’. Bread and pastry on your learn-to-master list? They’ve got classes for that too.
A big supporter of local, small-scale producers, there’s also a coffee bar, lounge, rear BBQ deck and retail goodies to browse.
7. Tenteram Cooking School, Gold Coast
If you’re on a mission to be a bit more #health focussed in the kitchen, then a four-hour class at Tenteram, and its lush Bali-inspired property in the Currumbin Valley, is the place to start.
Owners Kay and Justin have a passion for Indonesian cuisine – and creating healthier versions of it. The bench tops here might be sans refined sugars, fish sauce and white rice, but the dishes you create are so bursting with rich (and medicinal) flavours that your palate will be none the wiser.
They also sell their own gourmet product range, Tenteram Fine Foods, that you can stock up on before you leave.
6 more cooking classes to get your kitchen cred soaring
Tamarind Cooking School, Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Maleny Take the lead from expert chefs in a beautiful rainforest setting at this Sunshine Coast delight. Cuisines include French, Italian and Thai.
Norman Hotel, Brisbane With their 20 years of meat-flipping, this is the number one place to learn how to fire up the grill in a two-hour Mastersteak BBQ cooking class.
The Jam Pantry, Greenslopes (Brisbane) Fancy yourself a kombucha fiend? Upgrade (or get introduced to) your pickling and fermenting skills with monthly workshops here.
My Thai Kitchen, Auchenflower (Brisbane) The sumptuous flavours that come out of this kitchen also fill the cooking classroom, led by the restaurant’s chef Taya Meeikeaw.
The Sauce Kitchen, Toowoomba This foodie haven sits within a heritage building and offers a range of classes from baking and Asian cooking to coffee education.
Mecca Bah, Brisbane and Gold Coast For pizza-making lessons with a twist, head to this Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. Competitive cooks, take note: Prizes are up for grabs!
Have we missed any great classes? Let us know in the comments below.

On line casino Trip In Australia
