I never thought of that before but ABSOLUTELY.

I always think Fraser is running Ray through an experiment, here. He sees the opportunity when Ray presents it to him (immediately assuming Fraser is into Lady Shoes), and he decides to run with it.

I wrote a big analysis of Fraser's mindset in Odds over here, but the TL;DR is:

If Ray gets insanely jealous, then Fraser has some pretty solid evidence on his side that Ray is, in fact, in love with him. If he doesn’t, well—maybe Fraser’s been reading the signals wrong.

There’s NO reason for Fraser to not tell Ray about his suspicions. All that does is put Fraser in ACTIVE DANGER in a room with TWO MURDERERS. Fraser SHOULD tell him, and his excuse about playing things close to the chest at the end of the episode is weak!! The only thing that makes sense is that Fraser is testing him.

(Plus in @dirtyzucchini’s Personal Season 3 order—and our upcoming All One Season order—she puts A Likely Story immediately in front of this one, which I love, because then this can also be interpreted as a kind of loving revenge.)

Huh. On a whim, I traced a stock photo I had saved ages ago for a too-ambitious F/K project (=this but in full realistic detail), didn't look at any face references for the guys, went on coloring the damn thing without any plan, lastly added some Dief ears because that good boy is always around. Took about two hours total, and I'm posting it fresh (without going back to add the missing lineart to the Dief ears lol). This is an uncharted territory for me - I don't even have a meaningful title for the piece! o_O

Fraser/Kowlaski- Seeing is Believing

I've made it to Season 3 of Due South, and I'm trying to not be an obnoxious slash shipper wearing her shipping goggles 24/7 but holy fuck balls, these two.

I actually enjoy Fraser/Detective Thatcher and definitely saw some major sparks and UST with them through S2 but S3 comes around and in the span of 5 episodes, Kowalski has asked Fraser if he thinks he's attractive. (from the POV of Fraser being a woman) and now in episode 5, they are walking down the hallway and Ray is ecstatic because he thinks Fraser has given him the win over this argument he's having with Thatcher and Welsh.

Kowalski: I love you, Fraser.

Fraser: And I you, Ray.

Kowalski: -clearly taken aback- No not literally, I mean symbolically or something.

Fraser: No, I know. Thank you.

The way he quickly glances over at Kowalski and then away again with a blank face? Sends me.

But even taking out the shipping overtones, can we talk about how Fraser is completely comfortable just telling his male best friend he loves him without any ridiculous postering or even having to make qualifying statements like Ray does? Because Gods forbid a man tell his best friend he loves him???

Also this show is from the mid-90s at the peak of toxic masculinity culture and the rule of no-homo?

Sure, they do have that one absolutely infamous scene where Kowalski freaks out because Fraser gives him mouth-to-mouth to save his life, but again, I feel like his reaction made to lampshade Fraser's much more laid-back attitude about the whole thing.

Which kinda flips the whole no-homo context on its head. Something the show does a lot. LOL

3x01 Burning Down the House | Continuous

THIS IS ALL ONE SHOT!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS ALL. ONE SHOT.

A nearly two-minute walk and talk in the precinct set with NO CUTS. For TWO MINUTES.

This is TWO FULL YEARS before The West Wing, which popularized the long hallway single shot walk and talk.

Genuinely hard to convey how difficult a shot like this is to choreograph with so many different moving pieces. As one continuous take this shot is WILD. It means everything—including the push in to Ray and Elaine, the pull back out to include Fraser stepping precisely back into frame, the ACTUAL LIVE DOG, the walk into the bullpen with all the extras cutting in front of camera, the gag with the ink—all of that is in ONE GO, NO FUCK UPS.

INCLUDING!! One of the best pieces of acting in the ENTIRE SERIES right here:

THE love at first sight moment. In the MIDDLE of all this.

My favourite thing about this is imagining Gordon Pinsent standing patiently in the bullpen waiting for his moment for the 45 times it took to get the first ninety seconds of this shot clean.

Oh I will never be done being obsessed with this show. The level of stagecraft involved here alone is insane. Paul Gross the man you are,

Burning Down The House Canon Divergent AU where Rayk doesn't wear the vest and still takes a bullet for Fraser.

Fraser full of guilt because this guy who he's done nothing but annoy/distrust just took a bullet for him.

Ray tripling down on not risking his life for no one.

Fraser staying at the hospital for like a week straight (annoying his way into ray's heart) before Ray notices and, after a conversation about how the flats had burnt down, offers Frasers his apartment.

Fraser still visits every day. When Ray is discharged Fraser says to help him and just never leaves.

(Stacked Rewatch/Timestamp Roulette Art Challenge)

I procrastinated all day because I was so afraid to attempt to draw them - this is my first sketch in a while where likeness really matters, because their faces are big enough to add actual details. I had no idea what I was doing, I was just flying by the seat of my pants with skintones and stuff, so I'm honestly amazed how nicely this turned out - I'm only unhappy with the fact that Fraser's head became a bit too big. (Oil pastels on sand-colored mixed media paper, working time two and a half hours.)

The hold this show has on me… 25 years after it ended. ‘Due South’ is a Canadian treasure. Absurdly funny and ridiculously entertaining. Callum Keith Rennie is gonna slay in the final season of Discovery.
